Thank you for doing this video. I have had people ask me this question before, but I keep breeding sets together and do not introduce new birds to old birds. When I have in the past they just fought over cage territory and so I quit and keep them separate now. But good info to know, so I appreciate the time to put this video together!

Is there a pecking order in the incubator. Mine hatched today & they look like they are fighting!

We moved our baby quail that was about 3 to 4 weeks old with our adult quail and they picked on them then the next day one of the babies was dead so we took the other babies out till they got 6 to 7 weeks old

Will you be able to tell which ones are the older ones once the babies mature?

What if you’re currently having trouble with the flock? Would the grow outs still be safe?

I have a question about quails so one of my female quails was missing all of on the top of her head feathers because the boys keep breeding with her and I woke up this morning and noticed she has a lump on her head so I separated her and she keep stretching her neck out like her neck is in pain and she stubbles around while stretching

Thanks for sharing the video Chris. Unfortunately didn’t work when I introduced my 3 week old chicks into the pen with my older (8 week old) birds. Older ones chased and pecked them…was distressing to see. I put in a divider to separate them. Hoping that would calm things down

Thanks, Mr. Chris. As always, great video. I used to wait until the chicks were a month old, but that's unnecessary & even problematic. If the temp allows, 2 1/2 weeks is fine.
Will give one warning to new folk though: I was moving 7 chicks & put them in a coffee can, not a 5-gal bucket like you used.
Was worried about air, so placed a book slightly askew covering most of the open can while I readied other things. When I removed the book at the hutch, 4 were dead. My fault. They were jumping (of course) & me leaving a slot for air (there would have been plenty for the few moments they were in there), let in LIGHT & they were jumping toward the light, hitting the book & breaking their necks. My fault entirely! Complete darkness would have kept them settled & all 7 would have been fine. Lesson learned, but at a high price.
If an entire hutch is riled up for some reason, a predator for instance, & you want to ice them down a bit, put a blanket over the hutch for half an hour or so, and they'll settle.
Thanks again for all you do. May God bless you & yours.

It's so interesting they don't move on the wire. They are on wire at one week in my brooder and it doesn't slow them down at all. I wonder if yours take a while because it's higher off the ground and it's the height that takes them a while to get used to. When I introduce to the aviary, I do it at 3 weeks old because that's what you do and it works great every time!

    • @amyb5339
      @amyb5339 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I bet they didn't know what to do with the height off the ground and outside light and noises after the brooder in the shed.

So I have my birds on a very high protein until about 8 weeks, then higher calcium when them begin laying eggs. What do you do as far a feed when you combine the two ages?

We tried this at 3 weeks but adult rooster was trying to mate them. So we waited 1 more week adding 8 hens and a roo to 4 hens and roo. They were all good for 2 weeks then the young roo ended up pecking the eyes out on our older roo. Do we need to have more than 2 Roos or were they just too old?

People need to see this, so thanks!
BTW, do you still use 1/2" hardware cloth for floors? I'm wishing I had built my hutches with larger spaced wire floors so poop from birds would fall through to trays more easily

If you use 1/2" x 1" PVC coated wire, THAT is the secret sauce to strain out poop and prevent bumblefoot.
