  • In the midst of all the excitement and focus on Royal Caribbean's upcoming launch of the Icon of the Seas in January 2024, the cruise industry giant has introduced the Icon's sibling, the Star of the Seas. If the Star of the Seas garners the same level of attention as its predecessor, it has the potential to become a standout in the world of cruise ships.
Royal Caribbean, in partnership with the Meyer Turku shipyard, initiated the construction of the Star of the Seas in February 2023, just four months after revealing details about the Icon of the Seas. While specific information about the Star of the Seas has not been made public yet, as this new vessel is not scheduled to set sail until the summer of 2025, it is anticipated to be another substantial cruise liner, following in the footsteps of the soon-to-be-largest cruise vessel in the world.
Currently, there is limited information available about this massive ship. What we can confirm is that it's a sister vessel to the world's largest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas, a colossal 250,800 gross-ton ship set to welcome passengers (as many as 7,600 at a time) starting in January 2024. The Icon offers a wide array of amenities, including a theme park, a water park, an indoor AquaTheatre, mini golf, three-story suites, and the industry's first swim-up bar at sea, among other features. Given these impressive features, it is safe to assume that the Star of the Seas will also be a massive and highly-anticipated addition to the cruise industry.
"The idea of combining the best of every type of vacation into one ultimate adventure has created more excitement than ever anticipated, and Star of the Seas will be the next bold answer to the record-breaking consumer demand we’ve seen for nearly a year and counting with Icon of the Seas," Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, said in a statement.
When Icon of the Seas opened for booking, it set two records for Royal Caribbean in the company's entire history: the single largest booking day and the highest volume booking week.
Additionally, it has been confirmed that the Star of the Seas will be fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is promoted as "the cleanest-burning marine fuel available to date" according to a press release. This will make it the third ship in Royal Caribbean's fleet to operate on LNG. This decision aligns with the company's objective of introducing a net-zero emissions cruise ship by 2035, although there is still a significant journey ahead in achieving this environmental goal.
As for further specifics about the Star of the Seas, more information is expected to be disclosed in the upcoming weeks.
