LED vs HID in Factory Halogen Projector Headlights

  • In this video we compare 9600 Lumen 6000k LED bulbs to 55w 6000k HID bulbs in factory halogen projectors on the factory RAM projector headlights. I was shocked at the difference between the two and just how much the HID outperformed the LED bulbs in this shootout! The HID is much brighter and gives a clear visibility with great cutout and no dead spots. While the LED light quickly dies and does not light up the road well at all.

      The hid kit is a couple hundred dollars. You are comparing it to a $40 led kit. Compare it the the supernova V.4 led kit. It's $169. I feel that would be a more fair comparison.

They're pretty damn bright. Every so often I have people high beaming me. I bought the Hikari off of Amazon a couple months ago for $34 a set. They must have recently went up. I've also had some projector headlight on some cars and Led did not work very well. So I think it depends on the particular projector you have.

      Comparison is somewhat flawed because as already noted the LEDs are overheating which reduces their performance and of course there are better LED kits, some even cheaper, example, those with LEDs on four sides, those with different focus and etc.

    I had the same HID kit in my 99 Grand Cherokee when I installed projectors on it and loved how wide the beam pattern was and how far the light was projected. Fast forward a few years and I got a 17 Civic with Hikari LED and I thought it was the projectors that were the issue. I'm getting the same fuzzy and unfocused light pattern with dead zones and no throw you had. And same as you, my LED fog lights are doing all the work. After seeing the light pattern on the clipboard it all made sense and I was sold on going back to HID. The outside comparison of the two was insane.

    Thanks so much for this video. As someone who had LEDs in my previous car with reflector housings, I wanted the 6000k colour on my new car that came factory stock with HIDs in a projector housing. It sucks that they don't sell 6000k HIDs for factory projector assemblies so I started looking at putting LEDs in. Thanks for saving me the time and effort of changing them out and changing them back! Very helpful and much appreciated.

    Note To All: This is a great lighting change. I did the Innovited HID 6000k and couldn't be happier but.....BEWARE of some car washes especially touchless. They use a lot of high pressure water and at weird angles that you wouldn't get with normal driving. My install was the exact same as Boosted's but the grommet failed to keep the headlight sealed and I got moisture inside both housings. Luckily nothing blew but I have to take them off now and dry them out. You may need to silicon around that grommet if you hit the wash often.

    First of all great video, method and explanation.
    Just so people know, in March of 2018 LEDs were generally not very good for projectors. In the video you can clearly see the LED bulb was "clocked" crooked and showed the dead areas made by the wider chip housing.
    For what it's worth, SOME manufacturers have noted these issues, and have started setting chips in the thinnest housings, as close to where the bulb filament was, and also made it so you can adjust the "blade" after they are in your projector units.
    And if it wasn't for videos like this, those changes would have taken a very long time, so thanks again.

    • @BoostedMotorsports
      @BoostedMotorsports  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jay! True probably could be clocked a bit better. One of the nice things with HID is it works similar to the original halogen it replaced without clocking 😎

    I've seen situations where LED's perform just as great as HID's. Every vehicle headlight housing is different. The headlight housings also make a difference in beam patterns as well as the amount of light output the unit allows. Projector lighting units burn out over time, limiting the amount of the light output. So in some cases it won't matter how bright the HID or LED bulbs are.

    I know this is late but the dot you're seeing from the led w two opposing lights patterns is cause by the tip extending further then the led chip itself. The light has to shine around that thus creating a bend, especially if the chips aren't horizontal evenly. This is why some come with adjustable fittings so if it doesn't line up right you can make it.

  • @diesel3624
    @diesel3624 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Stumbled upon this channel a couple of days ago and convinced myself to go with HID's for low and LED's for fogs finally! I have a 2014 as well that I've been hesitant to mod at all. I was against swapping out the stock lights from bad experiences with HID's in the past but sounds like most people are having success and the video makes it look incredibly simple.
    Just finished installing OPT7 CANbus 35w kit in the lows and already see a huge improvement. Install was just as easy as the video makes it look, good work! No codes or flickering but concerned from other's comments there may be issues down the road? Is using the auto function not recommended? Is it overkill to get CANbus decoders now and install them as a "just in case"?
    I also installed JDM ASTAR G4 LED's for the fogs and can't believe how bright they are! I ordered the same set for the Hi beams but there's no way they will fit. The fan for the LED is way too deep to squeeze into the housing. Has anyone had success installing an LED set for their Hi beams? I also haven't had a chance to drive at night yet with the new HID set up...is it even worth putting LED's in Hi beams?

    • @brascle32
      @brascle32 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Matt, with the HIDs I think it would be best to use your switch because of the striking/restrike with the HID bulbs. From my little knowledge of them, they only have so many cycles before the bulbs are trash. They should last a good while though so don't let that bother you. Using the switch would be the easiest way to cut those number of cycles and extend the life even further. I ran a full LED setup (Hi's and Lo's) for 2.5 years because I wanted to keep the Auto functionality. Looking back I regret it because the HIDs in the Lo's are way brighter. You may be fine with just HIDs. I have a 2015 and the CANbus is a pain. I am not sure exactly what the model year was when RAM refreshed it. My buddy had a 2012 and he was fine with HIDs with no codes/no decoders. If you are getting light and not popping a code you may be all good. You could always add them later if you have issues.
      You can run LED highs without modifying, but it is tedious and a bit of a MOFO to get them in. You will curse. A LOT! Depends on the fan length though, the bulbs I found off a guy on a forum barely fit. I am not sure it would be worth the frustration. Unless you are able to find a bulb with high lumen output with a short(er) fan. Some of the stuff on amazon has dimensions listed. May be worth a measure it you want to go down that road. They're way brighter though, but I have not driven with the HIDs yet as I am still working through CANbus BS. Good luck.

      brascle32 thank you for the quick response! I’ve become spoiled with the auto function...I’ll plan to be the guinea pig for everyone and give an update if any issues pop up / how long the bulbs last.
      That was the main reason I stayed away from HID’s for as long as did. In my last truck it felt like I was replacing bulbs or ballast every six months. They would of course always go out on road trips...
      Hoping that isn’t the case with these but always safe to have a spare kit in the closet for (hopefully not) the inevitable!

    Awesome content on this channel! Sweet build! I have been moding my 2015 Sport 4WD very similar to yours just at a much slower pace. Ha! I ran LED Hi's and Lo's for about two years and decided to go HID in the Lo's and found your channel. Completed the install yesterday and have an issue. Hopefully the masses can help me out. I am using the same Innovited 55W kit with their decoders that I grabbed off amazon. The Lo's fire when I have the truck in 'RUN.' However, when I start it they turn off and I get the classic Lo Beam out message. I have my old decoders from my LEDs and I was considering swapping to those but figured I would reach out before I go down that road. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Keep up the great work.

      Thanks for your support on the channel! Yeah these trucks are very picky with the CANBUS system unfortunately. I've been using the Hikari CANBUS decoders which are $20 for the pair and seem to work well so far using the headlight switch manually but as others have experienced, leaving the switch in the AUTO position does some funny stuff.

    • @brascle32
      @brascle32 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply! Last night, I pulled one light out and tried my old decoders from my original Lo Beam LEDs and it worked with the truck running! Something interesting to note for all the people out there, the Innovited decoders are noticeably smaller compared to my older ones. I am thinking the feedback loop from them might contain more/larger components (resistors, capacitors, etc.) to fool the truck's system properly, so I would try and steer clear from them. Going to finish it tonight. My passenger side headlight unit has some terrible condensation that started building up this spring out of nowhere. Hopefully by this evening it is fully dried out and I can correct the venting on the light because they were mashed down all the way. I am hoping the heat from HID bulb helps mitigate that from happening again.
      Can not sing my praises any higher for this channel! You taking the time to show all the folks out there the small (and large i.e. procharger HAHA) details that make these great trucks even better has been a game changer for me and saved myself so much time. It is hard to find quality information with the level of detail you show in the age of over information and you have done just that. Keep up the great work and thanks again!

    I’m curious if the newer HIKARI Ultra led bulbs work better with the redesign of the ends. There isn’t that round piece at the end of the led bulb anymore and now create a pretty sharp line on the wall as compared to these older ones. Plus the HIKARI uses the new Phillips Lumiled diodes versus those ones that were used prior.

  • @rio20d

    I can really relate to your comment when you said: "when you look at them they dont look really different",..... this is the thing with some of my friends they look at the LED bulb that they just installed and it does look bright but they also need to look at the road and check and see for them selves how the LED lights up the road, in my opinion, probably eventually LED will catch up, I still think personally that HID is much brighter and they do throw lights much much further on the road and wider too. yes they do take time to warm up, unlike LED which is instant ON. I usually drive at night on the country side where there arent many light poles, so i only rely on my headlights and HID really makes a huge difference for me. YOu just need to find a reputable brand for the HID bulb and the ballast and you are good to go.

    I love following your videos, awesome information and it made my "new to me" 2015 Ram Sport easier to customize. I'm having some issues with the 55w HID conversion you are running. The flicker when I unlock the truck seems to throw the truck into a tizzy. The drivers side light went out, and a few days later the passenger side went out. I ended up going back with the stock bulbs until I can figure out whats going on. Also, will 55w HID bulbs work in the factory fog light housing? Or is that asking for to much power?

    • @pgharaghani28
      @pgharaghani28 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like that truck has a canbus system that is shutting off your lights sensing the current draw is not what a factory halogen would get. You can get around this with simple universal plug and play canbus bypass that plugs in between the ballast and bulb!

    How did you avoid moisture inside the lights

    I'm thinking of doing my headlights on my ram, now I had a question what do you think about the HID kite that OPT7 offers? I have used their 35w blitz hid kit on my suburban and they are pretty bright and strong I just don't know if they will work as well with the ram projectors. Just wanted to see what your thoughts are on this...

      I would go 55w if possible!

      55w is the minimum ballast power on projectors I recommend. 55w gives out a decent amount of light, but not as much as I like. I would advise to get 100w hid kit with relay. I got them on my car and its awesome with 4300k-5000k. These kits can be bought cheaply on eBay from China. I first install hid myself over 10 years ago. Started at 35w, 55w then now 100w. Great vid by the OP.

    Do you have pictures on how you organized the ballast and other wires. I'm getting that setup up this week and I'm just wondering? Also what fab did you have to do to get the first one to fit? Thanks again for all the help.

      Hey Mike I don't have pictures but I show where I mounted the ballast on the pass side by screwing it to the plastic liner and then on the drivers side I fed the ballast into underneath the fuse box and cable tied everything there for easy access. The fusebox lifts up with 4 quick release tabs and makes it a good spot cause you could swap the ballast or decoder without removing the headlight if ever needed 👍

      I put them in and they continue to flicker then shut off after 30 second. What should I do?

    Compared to your LED fogs, your HID’s headlights appear to have a blue tint. Is this the case? I am unsure about purchasing the 5000k vs the 6000k, I just don’t want a blue tint.

    I dont think unpinning the connector is very difficult.. just sayin.. question do you ever use your auto high beam function? Reason I ask is I'm wondering how that works with HID . I have 2 single beams I my commander and I was gonna do led in the high beams and just keep the hid in the lows. Would you do that or can his do well when they are flashing on and off .. u know they flash off when theres on coming traffic.. thank u for the video

      I would do HID for lows if its projector and LED for highs. That way you still can flash the highs and they are instantly bright when you switch them on 👍
