Excellent demonstration. You have a serious talent for demonstration. Its also refreshing and hugely enjoyable that you actually know how to use an EQ tastefully :) Keep em coming!!
Catface, have you heard the modern rack version of the trident a range (with pre amp included) they’re making these days? If so, would you say the pre amp on them sounds convincingly similar to the original a range pre amps? I’m skeptical because I think the original would have had components such as the zutt transformers which would be essential to get that sound?
TheMortybob Wouldnt you have to use that in conjunction w/ some other EQ for more precise Cutting/boosting.. ? I mean how wide are the Q at those fixed frequencies? I do like the tone of them alot btw
Hi, thanks for a great demo. I’m very interested in the A-range as a higher spec version of the 80B in 500. Of course different in some obvious ways, the 80B is excellent value and sounds great, but I’d want that same tone just richer and deeper, a more stabilised presence in the speaker. What do you think? Would love to know, cheers!
The A-Range and 80b are different beasts. Both are great but definitely different. I find the A-Range to be more forward. Not necessarily aggressive but it definitely makes whatever you're using it on punch through the mix. It also seems to be a little more saturated than the 80b. I'll put it this way, if I need something to cut and cut now I'll put the A-Range on it. The 80b is a little smoother and rounder. That doesn't make one better than the other, IMHO, but rather gives you two different ways to shape your sonics. If that makes sense?
@@Ultimatestudiosinc Thanks, much appreciated. I have the UAD plugin, so certain limitations aside, it seems a darker, richer sound, which I like. Your description of the 80b reflects mine. Its almost like a Gibson SG vs Gibson Les Paul vibe I think, hopefully the analogy makes sense!
I wish these kinda outboard EQ's had output gain controls. I'd probably be fooling myself with the gain difference and ruining my recordings all day every day ;)
The rack unit does. It also has the mic pre but since it has line inputs you can use it the same way I'm using the 500 version. I do understand what you're saying though. I had the rack unit for a bit and while it was nice having the output attenuation it's a little tricky with EQ. Since you're actually using frequency specific gain to bring out or tuck back certain elements. Over time you get used to it though. Now that I've had these for a while I know what to expect. Same with any gear really. Oh, and I've ruined plenty of music over the years trying to figure all this out! :)
Hi! Is it a stereo unit right? I was wondering if I could use it right on the master channel, during mastering. Did you try it? It might be a pretty good mastering eq.
What a "hidden gem"! The high's are pure magic! Only liked the lows on distorted guitar, I totally dig the mids but maybe not the best frequency selections on the LMF's. Awesome piece.
Well not quite as it's only the EQ section with. If you push into it you can get some nice saturation but not quite as much as the 19" rack unit. It does sound really good though. The rack unit is awesome! On my list to get someday.
sounds very good! such a shame that it looked flimsy when u pushed one button of the low/high pass filters that all other buttons moved along. looked cheap af!

Thank you! I really appreciate that.
Love the sound of that EQ, sounds so vintage to me. Like you said, "It's got mojo!" And bags of it! Definitely gotta get two if i can.
I couldn’t agree more! Lately they’ve lived on kick and snare for mixing. Hope you get to pick some up. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@Ultimatestudiosinc Thanks. Love what you did on that mix, by the way.
@@BeGoodNow5 thank you!
Thank you for excellent test!
Thanks for watching!
Man that thing sounds awesome!! I imagine that’s probably why I can’t seem to find a single one for sale on the used market!!!
Thanks for another great video - this thing sounds good. Although those buttons look mighty wobbly.
At 6.25 when he push the 3 low pass switches we can see the 3 high pass switches moving a lot...!!!!
DON'T BUY THIS PEACE OF SHIT
That's the thing that worries me a bit. He pressed one of the low pass buttons and one of the high pass buttons went in at the same time.
I'm building a Trident preamp so it's great to hear how the EQ sounds. Cutting and boosting similar frequencies seems almost Pultec-esq

@@Ultimatestudiosinc Hey, this recording sounds great! What preamps, converters and DAW was it recorded with please?
If you buy the 19” version you get output control.
500 series always makes compromises based on price and small form factor…
The option of being able to use multiple high-/lowpass filters at the same time is hella cool though.

im wonderinG the same thinG.- it seems like a mono EQ that physically requires two spaces en chasis.- do you know for sure?

Are using just the mic pre’s from the trident?.
Yes I am!

there is a difference with the vst plugin ?
is it mono or stereo?
