    I hate how all these people are disappointed. It’s for kids. It shows them design and lets them have fun. Stop acting like adults are their only audience.

    There's a channel that makes stuff out of cardboard. My nephew loves watching it. I'm sure when my nephew sees this, his gonna go nuts. I say this is a win for Nintendo. Note: this is geared towards kids. Remember that.

      Benjamin S if it was for kids, there would be actual children in the trailer, and wouldn’t be made out of cardboard, which kids will easily break when they get their hands on it.

    • @DoNotEatStudios
      @DoNotEatStudios 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Braden Allan there literally are kids in the trailer and what adult product would be made out of cardboard...
      Also being mad out of cardboard doesn't make it inherently easy to break. Yes if fallen on or stepped on it'll break, but these things look well designed enough to handle regular use. Not all kids are super rough, and the types of kids this would appeal to are definitely in the same vein as Legos or any other creative toy. Kids who like that stuff are already less rough and take care of their creations. Legos are super destructible and kids know that and are typically careful with them. Cardboard is also easily repaired when damaged. A competent adult could easily fix whatever is broke.

  • @masonm.5778
    @masonm.5778 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Not only is this an incredible idea for the kids, it’s an incredible business move towards the parents on Nintendo’s part. A parent would be FAR more reluctant to buy their child something like Skylanders, Infinity, etc. simply because it’s just a bunch of action figures that you have to buy more of to enjoy the game. Labo, on the other hand, I feel like will be much more appealing to parents. It not only encourages the child to build, but it encourages creativity with the ability to design each cardboard piece as well. Sure, it’s expensive, but if the parents know their kids will actually enjoy being creative and putting something together... Seems like a great motivator. That said, I’m no parent, but that’s just what I think.

    • @Azreale

      It's amazing and the price is just right compared to a PSVR($400) which is the cheapest VR in market. It's for the children who are the future of gaming. Nintendo are going back to there roots and innovating and using cheaper resources to an advantage where Sony and Microsoft are worried about 4K and VR!

    There is so much butthurt about this... but I mean did people not read that it was targeted to kids.
    And how awesome is it that we can make whole new gaming peripherals OUT OF CARDBOARD. It pretty much removes the need for things like specific controllers or accessories at high prices
    It doesn’t look like it’ll be for me, but me from 10-6 years ago would have loved this. And how uniquely they’re using the AR sensor is fantastic.

    This is why I love Nintendo! Out of all the screw ups and stubbornness, the continue to push the boundaries of gaming whether you agree or not. They are unconventional and take risks. Being a toy company, the make sure to make things fun. As someone who does Origami and loves crafts, this is exciting for me.

  • @Jbarker1983
    @Jbarker1983 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    You’re essentially paying about $14 for each kit, so the $70 one is a great value. The $80 one, you’re paying $60 for the game, and $20 for the kit. I think that is reasonable, if the game is fully fleshed out.
    I guess this is Project Giant Robot...

    A few things;
    1. The cardboard will inevitably weaken, so I expect them to end up selling the kits individually eventually.
    2. Why not a deluxe kit made with corrogated plastic?
    3. Will any of the games be playable without the accessories? (That is, worth it to play without them)
    4. I foresee a kid tripping with that robot kit on, falling ont their back and really smashing it.
    5. Is the cardboard temporary? Maybe they are going to see if it catches on and then they'll come out with more permanent accessories.
    Thanks for always keeping us informed guys!

      If anything this is more like those DIY engineering kits for kids or something closer to LEGO Technic. Yeah, there’s an element of customization, but I think it’s mostly about creating something that’s functional, and maybe even inspiring people to make their own gadgets and doodads with cardboard to interact with the Switch. You’re probably partially right that American kids are generally too easily distracted or rather stare at their parents’ iPad screens or phones, but if I was a kid I’d go nuts over this. Heck, I wanna get this for myself and I’m 26

    LOVE the idea of the cardboard! I can’t even imagine how much plastic waste I have from gaming “gimmicks” (guitar hero, dj hero, wii balance board, tony hawk ride, wii sports accessories) either lying around the house or put into landfill. I like that Nintendo have (perhaps inadvertently) recognised that anything marketed at kids will have an expiry date and that these will be recycled once they have outgrown their use and novelty.

      Michael Sollien how do you build a curriculum around something that takes maybe thirty minutes to assemble? Legos are infinitely better from that standpoint, but neither have a chance at being in schools.

      They do it legit or they sneak it in.

    • @MichaelSollienmusic
      @MichaelSollienmusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking of it more as a tool, not to base a whole class on it. It takes longer than 30 minutes to build the different creations in the variety pack, and consider that kids maybe use a little longer time to assemble this than adults.

    • @MysticalMastodon
      @MysticalMastodon 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      9Tailsfan That doesn’t explain how. And you’re talking $400 worth of supplies from home that are made once and that’s it.

    • @MysticalMastodon
      @MysticalMastodon 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Sollien I just don’t get it. again, Legos would be better because they can be taken apart and are cheaper. You would have to have, what, fifteen Switches in the classroom to make sure everybody gets a chance at trying what they assembled. The more realistic reality is that there would only be one Switch in the room and only eight kids participating on the project since there are only eight Labo sets in the pack. Even if it was a group project, some of the sets are so simple, they don’t require anything special to figure out. Seems like a fun toy for kids at home. I don’t see it as an option for schools or teachers.

    Here's the thing. The idea is brilliant. It uses the joycon's ability to recognize motion and shapes which in turn tells the game what action is being performed. it creates realistic, interactive gameplay in a way we never thought was possible. However, I strongly disagree with your opinion that this is an affordable price point. You're going by the assumption that the game is $60 and the cardboard accessories are the rest of the price. I can't possibly imagine in my wildest dreams that these games have more than $5-10 worth of content based on the footage that was shown. The variety kit looks like a glorified variation of 1-2 Switch and the Robot kit doesn't look like it has any more depth than you walking around and punching down buildings. It feels more like you're paying $10 for a game and $60-70 for the cardboard and rubber bands.

    My only concern would be the cardboard itself; cardboard weakens as time goes by - will the cardboard still be in good, working order after 2 months, 4 months, 12 months? Or will it be broken, torn, and worn-out? Is it true cardboard or is it cardboard with chemicals/plastics/metals added to increase strength and resistance? Until an analysis occurs on the cardboard, I'll hold off on getting it for any kids.

    For a world class company like NINTENDO with shareholders world-wide to create such a risky product that focuses on children's interaction with video games and technology, this is so important on so many levels. Education, fun, technology, and social human interaction with each other and with technology being set in a great example by NINTENDO, with the idea of playing games and having fun. Building mechanical joints, levers, and arms is such a great way for children to play. Imagine the possibilities of having an archive of original designs that anyone can download and create for their switch or even other tech. This is one of the most successful attempts at combining education with games, developing craft and mechanical knowledge (and potentially software!) in children much like lego had done it for us when we were children. In the video game industry, where the concern for children's well being is met with graphic and competitive games, NINTENDO has literally invested in creating a platform on which people can exert creativity, share ideas, build, apply critical thinking and interact with technology in a way that promotes the idea that video games can be a benefactor to children rather than a distraction.

    I can understand the hate about this, but as one of you mentioned, it looks like it'll hold up well, as cardboard does, and there are a few points that really make me see glimmers of; "This could be another 'Nintendo does something somewhat stupid and crazy at the time, that the entire industry applauds them for later' kind of moment".
    Those points are; The keyboard, while this is super simplified compared to a real keyboard (RIP my old Casio) it is super complex for a toy, and could be potentially wxpanded upon, and the other three hit a different note in union; A gas pedal, A Steering Wheel, and a Joystick. if they have good responsiveness, and are released seperately at a low price point, this could bring a TONNE of high profile games into "Well of course we're releasing on Nintendo, it only makes sense, duh!" territory. Ace Combat, or Racing games, they could be big. I remember my father's old Pilot Joystick for PC, and that thing just felt good to control, and giving that with an easy price point that could be "Oh no, my joystick broke, eh, I'll get another at lunch"
    Oh, and seperately; I want that robot game seperately or as a series because holy hell that robot's design is gorgeous...

Putting things together, taking them apart, creating something unique and putting my spin on it just sounds like pure perfection. I would play with legos, cardboard, metal, clay, whatever I could get my hands on. I love seeing something so unique, so inspiring, so creative! This is something I can really see cultivating passion for imagination, creativity, engineering, and so much more for a younger audience that doesn’t necessarily have interest in video games alone. Nintendo just keeps showing all of us how innovation and creativity has no bounds. Keep it up!!!

    I feel like this can do Wii numbers, but only if they do two things:
    1-Bundle the switch with a labo for 360 dollars. I feel like SO many kids are gonna buy a labo and don't know about the fact that they need a switch to use it.
    2- Market it HARD. It can't be marketed just like something for gamers to know, but appear in Super Bowl or at least very frequently in TV, and highlight the fact that the console is required to "play",and maybe also advertise that you can play mario kart or buy mario amiibos on it.
    Also, i'm impressed with this commercial. It is made to kids, and for kids to want, and yet nintendo didn't make a Wii U ad, they made a Switch ad for kids. I didn't think that was possible. Plus, Amiibo+Labo or a new Custom Robo game would be cool.

    Interesting. I am curious as to how things are gonna work. As a purely mechanical concept...friggin' genius. Some fairly complicated stuff here (the robot/mech construct, the steering wheel contruct, and (to a lesser extent) the piano construct) My only real concern is how long will the cardboard last? I would of thought of another material to package in and thought of other ways to get to a good price point. But what type of material can it be that does not cost a fortune, is light, and can be bent at sharp and subtle angles?
    Maybe extra card board kits are available and cheap. That would kinda fix my worries. Just buy extra kits.
