Looks like you dodged a bullet replacing that belt! Another great maintenance video that probably saved you hundreds of dollars over taking it to the dealer
Tom how did you know the belt was in need of replacement since it's so hard to see and inspect? What year is your generator and how many hours on it? I have an Onan 10K in a 2013 Newmar mountain Aire. I do all my own maintenance also, but so far have not checked on the belt or changed coolant. It was new to me in 2020. Think I'll take a deeper dive now that I've seen you do it. Thanks for the video!
Its almost impossible to know but time is a biggie, they say around 1500 but this gen has almost 4000 on it and i dont think it had ever been done. Since its in the back its gotta get super hot because all the hot air gets sucked right over it.
Hey Tom, thank you for doing this video. We just purchased a 2011 Monaco Diplomat and I too noticed there weren't many service videos about the 10 Kw generator. I had no idea how difficult it was going to be to do the fan belt change. That was an eye opener. Thank you for preparing me mentally for that one. The entire video was very helpful. I'm also going to hold off ordering parts until I see what's actually under the sheet metal. Didn't realize getting the correct part numbers might also be a challenge. Thanks again!!!
I enjoyed watching this. A year ago, I did all except the soot plug and fan belt. One point that was missed here is the radiator. Mine was extremely dirty - I would estimate there may have been a pound of dirt and dust trapped in the radiator fins. This required lots of water flushing, but I finally used a special pressure washer 90 degree tip and hit it all from underneath. Do not get close to the fins!
Hi there , enjoyed your video . I have the 12.5 HDCAB and it shows the belt is Onan part # 187-1232 . Of course I can't find it anywhere . Was yours the same part number ? If so what part number did you use for the replacement belt ? Thanks .
Great Video. I am not sure but I think I have a fuel line leak. My question is could you see the fuel line and get access to it when you removed the fan. I couldn't tell when from the video. I have taken everything apart except for removing the fan. The fuel line appears to enter from the back at near the bottom center of the unit. There is a fuel in and return line but I can't see on the other side? I checked the fuel filter and I don't see a leak. Any help would be appreciated.
Hmm, I didnt actually look but i dont think so, the fan had a shroud all the way around that prob blocked it. I think that could have been removed too as I started to thinking i needed it gone to get the fan off, but had just enough room to do it without removing it. This thing seems to pretty much be bolted together, just keep taking out bolts....
Thanks for the video Tom. I have a 2005 Gulfstream toy hauler with a Onan quiet diesel 5500. It ran good for a couple days after hurricane Beryl hit Houston. On the 3rd morning, the Onan started but put out no A/C. I suspect the wiring block inside the upper back cover, the transfer switch ....or possibly the fan belt ? Is there a variable belt adjustment on the water pump or is it simply a CORRECT belt friction fit ?
if it runs wouldn't be fan, your gen is very different from this one, i dont think there is a fan belt. Breaker, Transfer switch or maybe even instrument transformer if it has one to run electronics...could be the transfer switch in the RV too, gotta verify the gen is not putting out AC at its breaker
@@MortonsontheMove My next move is to access the 4 wire junction block at the upper back panel of the cover and check for voltage with my VOM. It is a tight squeeze to open and access. It helps to watch a variety of informative maintenance videos. Thanks for the response.
I know, easy to criticize and i do it too, but then when i get into it and just want to get it done sometimes slip....however i am pretty good about it if i really need to put force on something using the right tool the right way.... because I have learned the hard way why not, lol. But hey its my stuff and my mistake is my problem.
I would downsize that generator to 5kw extra space dedicated to 48v batteries maximize solar on the roof and use a DC to DC charging in the generator only as backup
There's no downside to the generator the downside was you ran it until it went off on the sensors which is a good thing otherwise you just would have burned it up service your equipment before it needs to be serviced and it won't shut off
You are amazing no fear. Thx for sharing as you saved a lot in labor costs and no telling other mechanics costs. I’m very impressed

Glad you found it helpful and will hopefully save you some headache! Good luck :)
I have said it many times before here in your comments - I would feel safer if I were parked anywhere near you guys… I mean…you are a rockstar!
Lol! Thanks :)

Good Idea, i actually have a 90 attachment!
I think Peter and John would cringe at how clean you keep that genset :)
Lol, you are probably right! Although most of that dust is their fault as we met them out on a dry lake bed! Lol
@@MortonsontheMove Oh! Is that why they sold the Mountain Aire! hahaha

GREAT video. Thanks
How many hours are recommended before the valve lash

Next time you change the fuel filter feel it halfway up with tranny fluid a motor will fire up with one push they say it's smokes but it doesn't
USE A ADJUSTABLE WRENCH THE CORRECT WAY, LIKE A PIPE WRENCH , ONLY ONE-WAY !!!!!

Nice
That looks like a newmar beautiful coach but you have neglected it
What would that same gen service cost if done by a mobile mechanic? X hours times x $ per hour plus parts and materials.
Too much!
Would be alot for sure, the belt alone is a few hours so prob upwards of $600 or more
The manual not including belt size infuriates me.
I AGREE! Cummins wouldn't give me the service manual either!
