I had an opportunity to skipper one of these a few times. Closest you can come to sailing a large sailboat because of the size and weight. Thx for sharing this video.
Update--This year on Sept. 12-20,2014 the Chicago RC MYC hosted 4 National Championship Regatta's for Soling 1M, Santa Barbara, J Class and EC-12's. The J Class was represented by 10 Boats-same venue as 2010,but MUCH lighter wind conditions. We had 6 Shamrock's, 2 Rangers, 1 Endeavour and 1 Whirlwind. A Shamrock won overall, the 2 Rangers next, 4th place was the Endeavour and 5th. place the Whirlwind. The Chicago J Fleet continues to grow as well.
i want one day to build a boat like these but i'm not sure which materials i should use, does balsa wood work as hull and bend it so it fits my frame??? or should it be any other material? Good vid :D
Kenz546--yes..Big Bear Lake. Our club is currently working on trying to schedule a weeks worth of RC sailing for Sept. 2014 this location, with at least four classes sailing. have to get proper permits first. These will all be National Class Championship races if it happens.
Would love to race my J here in up-state South Carolina. Unfortunately there is no one in this area. I sail her on Lake Keowee, a beautiful lake that is over 300 sq. miles of shoreline.
I know it's an old post, but... These are model J Class boats. The J Class is a formula class dating back to the early 1900's and was raced in the Americas Cup many times.
Impressive collection of pond sail craft. Just fantastic!
