  • This video is about how to use MEET, MEET WITH, and MEET UP WITH correctly in English.
I use simple English to explain what they mean and which contexts/situations each one should be used in.
I also give examples for each one.
I'm Teacher Mike, and I'm an English teacher from the United States. I have also worked as a communication quality manager in a five-star hotel and as a communication coach at a company that trains Japanese business professionals in the communication skills that they need to succeed on international teams.
I usually post 3-5 new videos each week, so if you're interested in improving your English, make sure to subscribe and turn on notifications so that you see all of my new videos.

Meet is usually used in the context of meeting someone for the very first time, and saying "Nice to meet you" .
So, it is weird to say I met my friends on the weekend.
Meet up is used for informal situations usually with people, who you already know.
Meet with is used for more formal situations (business)
Where did you meet your boyfriend?
I met up with my best friends yesterday.
I am going to meet with my new customers tomorrow.
Thanks a lot, Mike. Very useful lesson.

Thanks! Very clear and interesting for me. I haven’t seen that video before, and even I haven’t known till now about 3 different way of using „meet”, depending on with whom somebody is going to meet.

It was wonderful meeting up with you, my friend. Hope to see you soon.
    Thanks a lot, Mike.

Mike, "meet my friends" is strange for you (as an American). But not so & is in fact very common for uk english speakers (or in countries with British background). Usage of "meet with" is used more by americans. That's the main difference, as explained in many dictionary websites. In "british" english, it's more common to use "meet" or "meet up", & uncommon to hear "meet with" which is more formal & in written form.

I just talked to two ESL teachers from the UK, and they both said that they would probably use a phrasal verb in this context, not "meet".
Is it possible that you misunderstood the context in which I'm talking about using the word "meet"?
