It shows you clearly she’s much better at her job than the male detective. She handled her end amazingly. He was so rude to Kelsey. I am proud she stuck up for herself when she said “ I don’t like you interrupting me.” She had a hard enough time with her hearing impairment when he was hounding her while being so rude..As far as Jeffery I think he should have been committed to a psychiatric hospital style mixed with a prison type environment so he was incarcerated but where they were equipped to handle his care. He clearly has many issues that need addressed.

This is by far the most heartbreaking interrogation I've ever seen. She was treated as if she were an ignorant small child. I've seen interrogations with killers and I've never seen someone treated this poorly and inhuman.

Once they started talking about wanting access to her electronics the mother should have stood up for her daughter right there and said they were done with questioning until an attorney was present. It's meant to protect citizens from unlawful searches and forfeiting that protection leaves them vulnerable to even more charges that the police can stick them with. It's Roswell, GA. This is the same department that the "coin-flip" cops were fired out of. It's also the same department where a cop committed police-torture against a 13 year old suspected of driving a stolen golf cart. It's also the same department where a cop sat in his car behind local businesses and refused to respond to calls. In one case, a woman a block away was having a medical emergency, luckily a cop a couple miles away got there in time and saved her. This department is a hot mess, this video throws another log on that fire.
The good news, for anyone wondering, is that Andrew Kirk (the guy that interrogated Kelsey) no longer works as a detective. Looks like he left around 2022.
Kelsey was screaming on the inside "This feels wrong!" while her mom was yapping about the phone. You wouldn't just hand your phone to a stranger would you? Much less a police officer and ESPECIALLY if you're innocent. They're pros at finding small incriminating stuff unrelated to the actual crime and all of a sudden you're an accessory. This is horrifically heart breaking. The interrogator was absolutely out of line. "Calm down. You're up here and i need you down here." "I dont need all this with the hands" and after witnessing the clear language barrier and not reevaluating his method... Shut her down multiple times... He's horrible at his job. This was such a sad case.
Exactly, I feel terrible for this young woman. And wth don't they teach about mental illness in highschool. Young people should understand they can not help a person who is this ill. And that when people go off medications they need to notify next of kin, especially if the ill person tends toward violence.
Not only do I feel bad for her but it's also horrible for the investigation. She's a young girl who isn't mature enough to just say I told you the truth and I'm done repeating myself. Not only do you not have to voluntarily answer questions but you sure as hell don't have to submit to badgering. Ya this was one of the worst detectives I've seen from watching a load of these. Honestly she needed council to stop his bs. I would have walked tf out of there if was her. It’s ridiculous when people suggest a person who asks for an attorney is definitely guilty. Sorry, but if some cop is accusing me of a crime I didn’t commit and they’re interrogating me for an extended period of time, only an uninformed person would continue to speak without representation. I’ve seen one too many times where a person is falsely accused with no evidence and ends up being locked up for years trying to fight a case against them. Even if they inevitably are found innocent in court, losing years of your life being locked up prior to a trial is equally as bad.

I think it really depends on the person being interrogated. If its an arrogant young man, chances are, a female detective would be viewed as weak whereas an intimidating male would have more impact. In this case, the suspect lacks masculinity and presents as weak. He would be more open with an empathetic woman.
When the teenage girl is forthrightly like 'I don't appreciate you interrupting me' and the grown man's response is an immature *and entirely inaccurate* 'I don't appreciate your deceptions' I can't even. What a dumpster fire of a job he did.

The only option is the free public defense lawyer with a hundred to many clients at any given moment leaving their client advised to take a plea deal else just sitting there while the judge sentences the accused.

And yes she could have easily avoided this by not marrying a kid she knew for 3 or 4 months, that's dumb as hell

to be fair to the interogator, kelsey WAS hiding info! she was hiding the info of him being psycho, being off meds since a few weeks and that she had to grab a knife from him because she was afraid he would harm people and stuff like that, she was actively "helping" him to get off his meds and enabling him by not interfering when he was brandishing a knife, she just took the knife and did nothing to further stop him from attemting again.. I think she got off because of a plea deal where she had to testify or something, cause to me it feels like by enabling him, she is at least partly to blame
When Kelsey’s interrogator came into the room he immediately announced that he had taken multiple classes and was an expert I knew she was in trouble because only a bad one with low self-esteem would feel the need to declare his “abilities” What a perfect example of how not to speak to a hearing impaired person. I also am hearing impaired. It is very difficult to communicate when you can’t hear what is being said. Very, very stressful. I really felt bad for her.
As someone who’s hearing impaired I’m very upset with how the detective handled the situation. We struggle so hard to even understand what people are saying to us and keep up with a conversation, and it is a literal nightmare to me to imagine that being used against me to accuse me of doing something wrong. I hope she’s ok now.
I have hearing problems and seeing that detective being so rude and talking down to her upset me very much, as well! It’s very difficult for me to understand what people are saying to me, and having someone talk at me that way would confuse and upset me so much I wouldn’t be able to continue speaking with them!

The detective interviewing her is the perfect example of what is wrong with our system. He is in a power struggle over someone who he thinks is less than him, but she's just trying to understand what he's asking and eluding to.
In his defense, Roswell had not had any reported violent crimes or murders since at least the year 2000. I’m not surprised the RPD wasn’t used to dealing with violent crimes. It was known as a very safe and wealthy area.
Not sure about this particular jurisdiction, but I’ve studied evidence law and this detective is making it really hard for the prosecution to use anything in this interview. A competent defence team could easily get this thrown out of evidence (especially when he tells her to act a certain way, or implying that she won’t get out of the situation unless she confesses). The legal test is generally: if the police obtain a confession that would not have been obtained without the threat or implied threat, then it is void in evidence. Even if she confessed right then and there, it couldn’t be used as evidence in court. *Not legal advice*, just my opinion.

He didn't think she was less than him- he knew she was lying to protect a murderer. His job is to get the truth. The woman was lying. It was obvious she knew Jeffrey was crazy and dangerous. The detective is exactly what is RIGHT with our system. He is a man doing his job- making liars and criminals fess up. She knew everything but thinks she and Jeffrey are more important than everyone else. She knew what the detective was asking- she just doesn't want to admit her role in it and her foreknowledge.
I wouldn't go so far to say he needs to be fired. He's probably a very good officer, but clearly needs some additional training on interrogating techniques and communicating with impaired people.

Thanks to that second detective with Kelsey, for showing a wonderful example of how to be inefficient, inconsiderate, rude and how to almost always further rile someone up who is already upset. Not to mention the absolute disrespect shown by telling Kelsey to limit her hand use and the MULTIPLE times he disregards and minimizes her feelings, trauma and experiences with Jeffrey and his attempts to end his life.

@hi🙂 ‘Hard of hearing’ is a term that a lot of people use that have hearing impairments, no matter what degree it is. Some people that say they are hard of hearing still use sign or lip reading…whether they hear auditorial tones or not. Hard of hearing doesn’t just mean ‘I have a bit of trouble, speak up please’. The way you interact on the internet would be more tolerable if you knew what you were talking about.

But 100% rely on lip reading and side rant on lip reading: if you verbally mumble, your lips mumble as well. Cannot understand a word anyone says when they're just mumbling and it is just so infuriating.
This is devastating to watch. A young man in clear psychotic distress, a young woman being honest but yet still being disrespected without understanding her rights, a detective that needs more empathy and training, and two dead teenagers. Yeah, this world has plenty of despair to pass around.

that interrogator's biggest fault is that he did not use any rapport building with her or create a comfortable environment where she felt safe to share information. most likely, he came in there with assumptions regarding her involvement and was antagonistic from the beginning - probably poisoned by the mother's negative, belittling opinions. the mom seems like a real piece of work, herself. but the fact of the matter is kelsey was deliberately withholding information based on her middle school understanding of loyalty and he was able to get her to be honest with him. even i don't like how he did it, but he still did his job - just not with much elegance

The fact that Kelsey was able to deduct the interrogators intentions with ZERO training and under extreme distress WITH a disability proves that she would be 10x better at the interrogators job.

I love that fact that you guys don't shy away from calling out the negatives in their technique. The last few I watched the interrogations were so solid and they made them look easy. Here is a great showing that it's more than the formula, the interrogator has to be able to adjust when they realize they are wrong. Or have enough humility to consider they could be hinging their theory on a bad read. Terrific work to the EWU team!
We don't nearly see enough bad interrogations on TH-cam. It's pretty easy to watch a clean, hindsight play-by-play, but it's not the norm in this profession. Usually it's very complicated with numerous suspects, and they bulldoze their way over multiple peoples' rights without impunity on their way to the final suspect. Once they like you for something, they will use every dirty trick in the book, often getting access to and abusing the private materials of well-meaning people. It's honestly a disgusting profession.
My sister is profoundly deaf, she lip reads & demonstrates every single aspect of a conversation & interacts using hand signals, signs & also waves her arms around. It's how she 'communicates'! Watching this video nearly broke me because this is the way I've communicated with her for 58 years. They should have brought in a more experienced detective who is better able to relate to someone who is deaf 😢
They should've brought people more able to handle both of them. They were both handled so poorly. She was treated so badly, like he was so rude to her for no reason. I know his job is to be a detective, but it's not to be an absolute a-hole to someone who may or may not have known about their significant others crime. And he has no idea how to interact with someone who's hard of hearing. And I know he killed two people, but for some reason seeing that female detective treat him that way made me feel sorry for him. Putting him in distress like that is only going to mess his head up even more.

He was an idiot, straight up. I don't think he even knew what he was doing or how it was perceived. He clearly wasnt picking up on anything that we could see. Oof yes. I’m autistic but I’m really smart (apparently) so people talk differently sometimes to me or just attack me for no reason (not physically) they also sometimes do baby voice….. like tf . And I’m smart as in, im really into psychology and more just general how humans think and how there environment affects them. And so I analyse people to much that I forget that they don’t think like that😭 and they get scared how I know so much about them if I just met them😭, but mentally I’ll people love it😏😎including me bhahaha
This whole case breaks my heart. The picture of the schizophrenia self-help books from Jeffrey’s house, the journal entries logging his decline, Kelsey trying her best to help him, the two innocent victims that had nothing to do with any of it. It’s all just tragic.
This is what happens when people cannot get the help they truly need. Not that every schizophrenic is a murder or even violent, but the mind can get super messed up with a disorder like that, especially if they are exposed to such violence. Reading lips during conversation seems alot easier than it actually is; and thats when people ARENT interrupting you, dismissing your words and experiences and taking an uncaring and unempathetic approach to a horrific situation like attempted s*****e.
I feel so bad for this girl. She seems like a genuinely good and caring person who was trying to help her boyfriend without fully knowing what she was dealing with. I would imagine this would eat at her for the rest of her life. I hope she finds happiness in her life someday.
I see this too… and in situations like this apparently it’s not right to an average person to help someone like him. When really he needed her in his life but unfortunately his mental condition got the best of him. She had a great heart to care for him.

I feel so bad for Kelsey, her life was falling apart and she didn't even know it yet, then this dumbass detective treats her horribly. And her being Deaf definitely played a part in how she was treated, infuriating.
I don’t understand how some of y’all think he’s faking. He is diagnosed, has been medicated, has a historical evidence of his mental illness, required medical attention before being fit to stand trial, and has experiences/stories similar to many people with schizophrenia. Matt is a hallucination yes, but just like many other patients with schizophrenia, this character is threatening his loved ones, and then tells him to kill others. This is a very, very normal experience for them. It is just shocking to me how people can ignore blatant evidence. No wonder there is so much untreated mental illness, so many of y’all wouldn’t believe them even if they told you or asked for help. Also, just as a final note, do you have any idea how exhausting all his physical movements are. Shaking is exhausting on the muscles, excellerated breathing strains the heart, bodies are pushed to the limits during an episode, but the movements provide mental soothing, so the body will push through. It would be very hard for someone to endure faking panic for as long as Jeffrey suffered.
I think this interrogation with Kelsey really spells out why I love EWU so much versus any other crime TH-cam channel. EWU will actually tell us when a detective is doing a bad job, instead of overlooking it or agreeing with them.
What did he do so wrong? It's just one youtubers opinion of how he thinks a suspect should be interrogated. I think the interrogators did a perfectly fine job and got good results.
That detective that interviewed Kelsey is the kind of cop that gets an innocent person locked up. All he did was make negative assumptions and accuse her, he really gave as little consideration to the idea of her being innocent and honest as he possibly could. Scary stuff.

They always do this. You're noticing more because she's likely innocent, but they always accuse people, especially when they don't have anything against the person they ask questions to. I've seen many of these videos and I often ask myself how many people did nothing wrong but have been convicted because they were tired, nervous, and just mispoke. No wonder there's so many justice miscarriage in the US.
Kelsey is literally traumatized by that incompetent and unprofessional investigator. She has every right to sue the hell out of that police station for emotional damage and undue distress.

My mom is deaf and the way Kelsey is being talked to during this interview is making me absolutely sick to my stomach. The detective refuses to listen to her and then has the balls to say “stop it with your hands”, my blood is boiling. It is so hard for a deaf person to catch everything in a normal conversation anyway, and for him to treat her this way during and INTERROGATION is sick.
This woman is being borderline psychologically abused in this interrogation. Demeaning her, telling her shes being purposefully deceptive when shes being honest, asking if shes really being truthful. Making her question herself, literal gaslighting. Not everyone tells their partner everything, especially dark shit like this. Kelsey probably thought she was going to jail after the interview because the detective kept saying she was being deceptive and that’s why she was acting so hostile and distressed. The interrogator was horrible here.
Yeah I think she was confused about what was even going on. Most people have no idea how the system works, throw being deaf on top of it and the fact that detective doesn't seem to know how do anything besides say, "I know you know now tell me what I know you know.", and so like she clearly thought she was going to be arrested or something with how he was talking. That's why she kept saying, "No!" when he went to leave the room because she assumed that meant she'd be taken to jail. Then when her mom was like, "I'm scared." she went, "Scared for me?!" and freaked out,a nd her moms like, "Wut.... -_____- no, you're fine." then she was like a lot more calm after that. Detective was friggin ass at his job. Was probably hammered and wanted to score another 8-ball and was getting frustrated this wasn't a slam dunk bulldozing over a deaf girl.

As a hard of hearing person, they 100% misunderstood the part at 10:25. She didn't hear the officer when he first said "high strung". Once he repeated it, she heard, and was answering his question. It wasn't that she didn't understand what the phrase meant, but the officer assumed and was prattling on about what it meant, despite already knowing she was hoh. She wasn't interrupting him, she was answering his question. It doesn't indicate she's lying, it's a common misunderstanding we deal with as deaf/hoh people.
This bugged me because I'm not even hard of hearing. I've definitely misunderstood a question, and the. Answered it in the middle of it being repeated when my brain caught up. That's a totally normal thing that happens in normal conversations.
I’m not deaf/hoh, but as someone who is dating a CODA whose social mannerisms are more understood by those privy to deaf culture, and as someone who is learning signing in order to have meaningful and proper convos with my prospective in-laws, and as an autistic individual, the moment that the detective said “Stop it with the hands” pressed me off so much. I’ve dealt with the whole “quiet hands” bs, and deaf/hoh people communicate so much more than others with their hands, not just with signing but emotionally speaking. I see it regularly with my CODA partner as well and that’s just secondhand exposure to deaf/hoh culture. I’m pissed at this detective for his insensitivity and I hope to god he hasn’t scarred others the way he may have to Kelsey.
This entire case is heart breaking. The two innocent teens losing their lives for absolutely no reason. The way Kelsey was treated and talked to for being completely innocent. The fact that Jeffrey was unable to receive help before this all happened and if he would’ve gotten help, maybe this all could’ve been prevented. The whole thing is sad. Jeffrey’s mental health crisis does not excuse what he did. But, he’s the perfect example of the reason we need more metal hospital jails. He’s most likely going to spend his time in a general prison where he is not going to get the proper evaluations and treatments he needs.
There is no indication from this video that there was a lack of access to healthcare. It just said he was off his meds. Could easily have been his decision. Not lack of access to meds.

The female detective saying “you didn’t see her in the daylight look at her” gave me chills. I’m 17 and I can’t imagine how her family feels or how scared she might have been or anything that she experienced that night. Same for the young man. So heartbreaking.
So true....sad situation all around, Summer. I knew a woman named Summer and she would go to antarctica for the summer. I told her, "Jeez, you never see the summer, Summer!", and she replied "sweetie it's summer everywhere I go!". So true...she had a such a warm personality. She was eaten by polar bears at age 27, sadly...but I think of her often during the summer and also when it's very cold.
I give Kelsey a lot of credit, dealing with that awful unskilled investigator would have been frustrating for anyone. Facing a jusge based on him filing your charges would be the worst.
I love how people pretend cops are counselors and physcis. Their job is to arrest you. Every time you've talked to a cop: they have assessed rather to arrest you or not. Every person who's been arrested has either lied, or asked for a lawyer immediately. In my opinion, detective Bennett did an amazing job in the interrogation with Jeffrey. She wasn’t being overbearing or mean like I’ve seen in other interrogations but she also didn’t just completely coddle him in order to get him to keep talking to her. She knew when to be stern with him and when to back off just enough to keep him engaged. I’ve watched too many videos where detectives use intimidation to get what they want out of suspects. She actually talked to him like a human

I'm hard of hearing but luckily it's only high pitches in one ear so even without a hearing aid I hear well enough I don't need to read lips or sign language or anything. I probably say, "what?" twice as much as the average person though & when I go to the movies I have to make sure the girl sits on my good ears side or I won't be hearing a word they say lmao

This is so sad and disturbing. My sister has a history of paranoid schizophrenia. She experienced hearing voices around the age of 16. She is now 68. She is in a lock facility. She has escaped and gone homeless several times. She has jumped off a bridge unto the 5 freeway and survived, she has cut her gut open from below her belly button to her ribs and pulled out her intestines and survived. This disease is horrific. The mental facilities and government programs have been cut back. She used to live with me and my family until she became unsafe for my grandchildren and neighbors. I had her committed to be a ward of the state. It was under their care that she was homeless on the streets, a great harm to herself and others. I don't know what the solution is but it is not to be taken lightly. It is real and it is dangerous.
My brother suffered it too and eventually took his own life. He was a talented artist, crazy imagination and humour. Oddly, I notice how Jeffrey's writing is so neat. Some schizophrenics can have hidden talents and as you say, if the support is there and they take their meds, things can be fine, but if not, things can go downhill fast. I hope your sister is getting some form of stability and is not homeless.
Omg i wish you and your sister the best. Ive been homeless and on drugs on the street. Definitely not a good situation. Being there i really started losing my faith in the government and humanity. Although in my situation it was my own choices that got me there. I know some with this disease will have times they may seem normal and people dont understand or arent trained enough to look for behaviour and signs theyre showing. Although your sister sounds like a severe case so i dont know if she was like this. But im guessing if you felt okay to have her live with you then she must have had her good moments. It takes really takes life long treatment and more studying to help people understand this illness. Even some medical professionals ive met dont understand how to deal with this ilness. But in the past alot of people that were born with this illness dont end up living very long. Then again as a society we didnt even know about this illness for generations. It feels like even now, because the illness is considered so rare, we still dont know much about it. Ive never heard of a person living almost all their life with this illness and living up to 68 into their old age. Then having government programs be cut man thats going backwards when people like your sister will always need help. I know care aids where i live dont get paid enough for their hardwork. And the governement here makes it so difficult for others in other countries to transfer over. So theyre dealing with a shortage of nurses aids or care aids and yet even people coming from outside the countries are facing many roadblocks meanwhile people like your sister are the ones suffering. Alot of nursing homes are treated between as a cross between old age homes and as psychiatric units for people with degenerative or mental illness and that need full time care. I really hope she gets the help she needs. Is she back in a facility now? Do you get to visit her often?
My mom was bipolar combined with schizophrenia. She wasn't violent except for the rare occasion. She did have voices talking to her. One voice told her that the calculator that the school had given me, was secretly meant for stealing social security numbers. She thought "people" were performing surgery on me while I slept to take my organs & would look for scars. Luckily she didn't have the inclination to really hurt someone. This illness requires alot of attention. I'm not excusing this crime, but I do feel compassion for the severely mentally ill. As well as the victims.

I have to take exception, with one thing you said. “This is just one example of why young or vulnerable individuals should have a parent and/or lawyer present with them during questioning.” No one should ever talk to a detective in it interview or an interrogation without a lawyer present. Period.
Something I wanted to touch on is where Kelsey says “He told me he would never do that (hurt someone)” but that “his voices make him.” Now when I was younger and heard stuff like that I would scoff and think that was just an excuse. Then at around 18 I had my first Schizophrenic episode; it was the start of a very difficult and depressing path. Now at 26, I can shed some insight to the “the voices made m do it” thing; With hearing voices within a psychotic episode, it’s not so cut and dry that it’s a hallucination; it’s hard to tell what are your own true thoughts and what are delusions, and hallucinations like voices typically play VERY hard i to your delusions. Really, Schizophrenia is like having your true self and then this separate, gremlin or poltergeist type being share your mind, with it being able to play games with your sense of reality. If your brain or this “gremlin” finds something that distresses you a lot, it will latch on to that thing. Your brain very much is self-destructive with the illness, especially during psychosis. So the brain latching on to something, like say, “do this” or ”do that” would start slow then just exponentially increase in repetitiveness until it feels like all you’re hearing is that one thing over and over again, nonstop. I’ve actually caused myself harm because I just wanted some peace from my brain for a few minutes. So while hurting OTHERS is a bit more extreme, the general idea of “voices making you do --“ isn’t as much of a crock as it sounds. I pointed out the harming others thing above because even being Schizophrenic, there’s a very clear line between harming yourself and harming another living creature or human being. Definitely in no way is the illness an excuse for harming others though, that is out of the question. TL;DR: Voices that accompany schizophrenia DO latch on to ideas and commands but the individual themselves still do retain control of their actions. The truth is, it isn’t out of the question for someone to believe that actually doing what the voices want will get them to stop; in all likelihood though, it wouldn’t change anything and the voices would just latch on to another command and so on from there. My schizophrenia is mild to moderate though so I can’t really speak on how intense it is for someone with a more severe case.
Schizophrenia is not an excuse, it's an illness. For you having the illness I'm surprised at how you're speaking about it, and it shows that you don't know too much about even your own illness. The thoughts and voices become so realistic that in can invoke excessive fear or even as if you're not yourself or in your own body. Split reality. You don't know what's real or not or what's right or wrong in a psychotic episode and sometimes in day to day life. Sometimes or most times it's very hard to tell if what you're doing is even real.

This detective is absolutely terrible at his job, the way he kept accusing that poor woman of lying when she was clearly telling him the truth and telling her not to use her hands when she is hearing impaired and relies on her hands to communicate is disgusting. I really feel for anyone who has had the misfortune of having to deal with this man.
How in the hell were no other detectives monitoring this to step in? I don't care how many years he said he's been doing this, but he's absolute garbage at it. It forever adds to the trauma she suffers from finding out why she was being questioned at all. If they were a little more forward, it would have been a good bit easier.
The thing that infuriates me more than anything is that Kelsey and her mom don't know that the cops can lie to you and they are absolutely lying to her.
His behavior came off to me as “I know I’m caught so I’m gonna act crazy from the start.” Kelsey seemed honest to me. That doesn’t mean I’m right, just how it seemed.
My brother has schizophrenia he used to hear voices and see things ….I’d come home and he’d be in full blown arguments with no one, it was so scary, a few times I thought he had someone in the room with him but he didn’t. It took me three years to get mental health to take it seriously ..and he was medicated against his will. Three years it’s been since he’s been on his meds and he’s like a new man, he still has some moments of delusion but they don’t control his life anymore
It’s a really crappy and insidious disorder. From what I understand, it is partially caused in the center of the brain that syncs up what we hear and see (we technically see before we hear things) and ties it all together in memory so we know it’s a recalled event rather than a current event. Bad a guy, a few years ahead, diagnosed. Biggest teddy bear before but some real difficulties after.
my uncle had schizophrenia and then served in the vietnam war. after that he had totally lost it and on one instance aimed a shotgun at my father. today he is not doing amazing but definitely better than he was. he cant live by himself (i believe due to other mental/physical health complications) but his 6 surviving siblings meet up with him every weekend.

It’s an interrogation tactic used on all people. Doesn’t change just because she’s deaf. It’s been used in many cases on this channel, they’re not always nice to people it’s a “bad cop” method if you will.
Yea, im autistic and can understand why this dude had a breakdown, and it looks to me like he didnt even understand what was going on or that he was lying. What he did was awful and disgusting. And the way she keeps eye contact is definitely not because she was lying, but because she was reading his lips. I am very slightly hard of hearing, and cant half understand that detective either, so she definitely needed to lip read. This whole situation is awful, but half of the things the detectives do here shows they dont quite understand disabilities. And as someone wio actively uses sign language, "i dont need your hands" or what is known as "quiet hands" is highly rude to say to someone who uses sign language. Its like telling someone to shut up. Like taking away their form of communication.
Kelsey's interrogation was heartbreaking to watch. I knew of this story but didn't know she existed / was interviewed. As someone who is hearing impaired I really feel for her.

I’m assuming that she wasn’t read her rights as it was a voluntary interview, and if she HAD been involved, he could’ve seriously jeopardised the case that would’ve been made against her. It was lucky for him that she was innocent here, he could’ve potentially allowed an accomplice to murder to walk free. That being said, it was incredibly foolish of her to lie like that.

I am proud she stuck up for herself when she said “ I don’t like you interrupting me.” She had a hard enough time with her hearing impairment when he was hounding her while being so rude..As far as Jeffery I think he should have been committed to a psychiatric hospital style mixed with a prison type environment so he was incarcerated but where they were equipped to handle his care. He clearly has many issues that need addressed.

This is by far the most heartbreaking interrogation I've ever seen. She was treated as if she were an ignorant small child. I've seen interrogations with killers and I've never seen someone treated this poorly and inhuman.

It's meant to protect citizens from unlawful searches and forfeiting that protection leaves them vulnerable to even more charges that the police can stick them with. It's Roswell, GA. This is the same department that the "coin-flip" cops were fired out of. It's also the same department where a cop committed police-torture against a 13 year old suspected of driving a stolen golf cart. It's also the same department where a cop sat in his car behind local businesses and refused to respond to calls. In one case, a woman a block away was having a medical emergency, luckily a cop a couple miles away got there in time and saved her. This department is a hot mess, this video throws another log on that fire.
The good news, for anyone wondering, is that Andrew Kirk (the guy that interrogated Kelsey) no longer works as a detective. Looks like he left around 2022.

Beyond pointlessly berating a decent young person he's also conducting a horrible interview. He got no useful information and anything she did say would be useless when a jury sees that interview. I sure as hell wouldn't find her guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. I'd just see a scared kid trying her best in the face of a bully. This is also how decent people grow to hate police. That poor girl will struggle to trust authorities forever.

Sorry, but if some cop is accusing me of a crime I didn’t commit and they’re interrogating me for an extended period of time, only an uninformed person would continue to speak without representation. I’ve seen one too many times where a person is falsely accused with no evidence and ends up being locked up for years trying to fight a case against them. Even if they inevitably are found innocent in court, losing years of your life being locked up prior to a trial is equally as bad.

I think it really depends on the person being interrogated. If its an arrogant young man, chances are, a female detective would be viewed as weak whereas an intimidating male would have more impact. In this case, the suspect lacks masculinity and presents as weak. He would be more open with an empathetic woman.

to be fair to the interogator, kelsey WAS hiding info! she was hiding the info of him being psycho, being off meds since a few weeks and that she had to grab a knife from him because she was afraid he would harm people and stuff like that, she was actively "helping" him to get off his meds and enabling him by not interfering when he was brandishing a knife, she just took the knife and did nothing to further stop him from attemting again..
I think she got off because of a plea deal where she had to testify or something, cause to me it feels like by enabling him, she is at least partly to blame

We struggle so hard to even understand what people are saying to us and keep up with a conversation, and it is a literal nightmare to me to imagine that being used against me to accuse me of doing something wrong. The detective interviewing her is the perfect example of what is wrong with our system. He is in a power struggle over someone who he thinks is less than him, but she's just trying to understand what he's asking and eluding to.
In his defense, Roswell had not had any reported violent crimes or murders since at least the year 2000. I’m not surprised the RPD wasn’t used to dealing with violent crimes. It was known as a very safe and wealthy area.
Not sure about this particular jurisdiction, but I’ve studied evidence law and this detective is making it really hard for the prosecution to use anything in this interview. A competent defence team could easily get this thrown out of evidence (especially when he tells her to act a certain way, or implying that she won’t get out of the situation unless she confesses). The legal test is generally: if the police obtain a confession that would not have been obtained without the threat or implied threat, then it is void in evidence. Even if she confessed right then and there, it couldn’t be used as evidence in court. *Not legal advice*, just my opinion.

Some people that say they are hard of hearing still use sign or lip reading…whether they hear auditorial tones or not.

But 100% rely on lip reading and side rant on lip reading: if you verbally mumble, your lips mumble as well. Cannot understand a word anyone says when they're just mumbling and it is just so infuriating.

that interrogator's biggest fault is that he did not use any rapport building with her or create a comfortable environment where she felt safe to share information. most likely, he came in there with assumptions regarding her involvement and was antagonistic from the beginning - probably poisoned by the mother's negative, belittling opinions. the mom seems like a real piece of work, herself. but the fact of the matter is kelsey was deliberately withholding information based on her middle school understanding of loyalty and he was able to get her to be honest with him. even i don't like how he did it, but he still did his job - just not with much elegance

I love that fact that you guys don't shy away from calling out the negatives in their technique. The last few I watched the interrogations were so solid and they made them look easy. Here is a great showing that it's more than the formula, the interrogator has to be able to adjust when they realize they are wrong. Or have enough humility to consider they could be hinging their theory on a bad read. Terrific work to the EWU team!
We don't nearly see enough bad interrogations on TH-cam. It's pretty easy to watch a clean, hindsight play-by-play, but it's not the norm in this profession. Usually it's very complicated with numerous suspects, and they bulldoze their way over multiple peoples' rights without impunity on their way to the final suspect. Once they like you for something, they will use every dirty trick in the book, often getting access to and abusing the private materials of well-meaning people. It's honestly a disgusting profession.

Watching this video nearly broke me because this is the way I've communicated with her for 58 years. They should have brought in a more experienced detective who is better able to relate to someone who is deaf 😢
They should've brought people more able to handle both of them. They were both handled so poorly. She was treated so badly, like he was so rude to her for no reason. I know his job is to be a detective, but it's not to be an absolute a-hole to someone who may or may not have known about their significant others crime. And he has no idea how to interact with someone who's hard of hearing. And I know he killed two people, but for some reason seeing that female detective treat him that way made me feel sorry for him. Putting him in distress like that is only going to mess his head up even more.

The picture of the schizophrenia self-help books from Jeffrey’s house, the journal entries logging his decline, Kelsey trying her best to help him, the two innocent victims that had nothing to do with any of it. It’s all just tragic.
This is what happens when people cannot get the help they truly need. Not that every schizophrenic is a murder or even violent, but the mind can get super messed up with a disorder like that, especially if they are exposed to such violence. As a person who lives with a hearing impairment, Kelseys interrogation was infuriating to watch. Reading lips during conversation seems alot easier than it actually is; and thats when people ARENT interrupting you, dismissing your words and experiences and taking an uncaring and unempathetic approach to a horrific situation like attempted s*****e.
I feel so bad for this girl. She seems like a genuinely good and caring person who was trying to help her boyfriend without fully knowing what she was dealing with. I would imagine this would eat at her for the rest of her life. I hope she finds happiness in her life someday.

I don’t understand how some of y’all think he’s faking. He is diagnosed, has been medicated, has a historical evidence of his mental illness, required medical attention before being fit to stand trial, and has experiences/stories similar to many people with schizophrenia. Matt is a hallucination yes, but just like many other patients with schizophrenia, this character is threatening his loved ones, and then tells him to kill others. This is a very, very normal experience for them. It is just shocking to me how people can ignore blatant evidence. No wonder there is so much untreated mental illness, so many of y’all wouldn’t believe them even if they told you or asked for help. Also, just as a final note, do you have any idea how exhausting all his physical movements are. Shaking is exhausting on the muscles, excellerated breathing strains the heart, bodies are pushed to the limits during an episode, but the movements provide mental soothing, so the body will push through. It would be very hard for someone to endure faking panic for as long as Jeffrey suffered.
I think this interrogation with Kelsey really spells out why I love EWU so much versus any other crime TH-cam channel. EWU will actually tell us when a detective is doing a bad job, instead of overlooking it or agreeing with them.

Kelsey probably thought she was going to jail after the interview because the detective kept saying she was being deceptive and that’s why she was acting so hostile and distressed. The interrogator was horrible here.
Yeah I think she was confused about what was even going on. Most people have no idea how the system works, throw being deaf on top of it and the fact that detective doesn't seem to know how do anything besides say, "I know you know now tell me what I know you know.", and so like she clearly thought she was going to be arrested or something with how he was talking. That's why she kept saying, "No!" when he went to leave the room because she assumed that meant she'd be taken to jail. Then when her mom was like, "I'm scared." she went, "Scared for me?!" and freaked out,a nd her moms like, "Wut.... -_____- no, you're fine." then she was like a lot more calm after that. Detective was friggin ass at his job. Was probably hammered and wanted to score another 8-ball and was getting frustrated this wasn't a slam dunk bulldozing over a deaf girl.

As a hard of hearing person, they 100% misunderstood the part at 10:25. She didn't hear the officer when he first said "high strung". Once he repeated it, she heard, and was answering his question. It wasn't that she didn't understand what the phrase meant, but the officer assumed and was prattling on about what it meant, despite already knowing she was hoh. She wasn't interrupting him, she was answering his question. It doesn't indicate she's lying, it's a common misunderstanding we deal with as deaf/hoh people.

This bugged me because I'm not even hard of hearing. I've definitely misunderstood a question, and the. Answered it in the middle of it being repeated when my brain caught up. That's a totally normal thing that happens in normal conversations.

I’m not deaf/hoh, but as someone who is dating a CODA whose social mannerisms are more understood by those privy to deaf culture, and as someone who is learning signing in order to have meaningful and proper convos with my prospective in-laws, and as an autistic individual, the moment that the detective said “Stop it with the hands” pressed me off so much. I’ve dealt with the whole “quiet hands” bs, and deaf/hoh people communicate so much more than others with their hands, not just with signing but emotionally speaking. I see it regularly with my CODA partner as well and that’s just secondhand exposure to deaf/hoh culture.
I’m pissed at this detective for his insensitivity and I hope to god he hasn’t scarred others the way he may have to Kelsey.
This entire case is heart breaking. The two innocent teens losing their lives for absolutely no reason. The way Kelsey was treated and talked to for being completely innocent. The fact that Jeffrey was unable to receive help before this all happened and if he would’ve gotten help, maybe this all could’ve been prevented. The whole thing is sad. Jeffrey’s mental health crisis does not excuse what he did. But, he’s the perfect example of the reason we need more metal hospital jails. He’s most likely going to spend his time in a general prison where he is not going to get the proper evaluations and treatments he needs.
There is no indication from this video that there was a lack of access to healthcare. It just said he was off his meds. Could easily have been his decision. Not lack of access to meds.

The female detective saying “you didn’t see her in the daylight look at her” gave me chills. I’m 17 and I can’t imagine how her family feels or how scared she might have been or anything that she experienced that night. Same for the young man. So heartbreaking.

In my opinion, detective Bennett did an amazing job in the interrogation with Jeffrey. She wasn’t being overbearing or mean like I’ve seen in other interrogations but she also didn’t just completely coddle him in order to get him to keep talking to her. She knew when to be stern with him and when to back off just enough to keep him engaged. I’ve watched too many videos where detectives use intimidation to get what they want out of suspects. She actually talked to him like a human

My mom has hearing issues, which made watching Kelsey's interrogation really hard for me. I really hope that detective realizes someday how crappy it was of him to treat her like that instead of admitting that he could be wrong about something, but let's be honest he probably never will.

I'm hard of hearing but luckily it's only high pitches in one ear so even without a hearing aid I hear well enough I don't need to read lips or sign language or anything. I probably say, "what?" twice as much as the average person though & when I go to the movies I have to make sure the girl sits on my good ears side or I won't be hearing a word they say lmao

This is so sad and disturbing. My sister has a history of paranoid schizophrenia. She experienced hearing voices around the age of 16. She is now 68. She is in a lock facility. She has escaped and gone homeless several times. She has jumped off a bridge unto the 5 freeway and survived, she has cut her gut open from below her belly button to her ribs and pulled out her intestines and survived. This disease is horrific. The mental facilities and government programs have been cut back. She used to live with me and my family until she became unsafe for my grandchildren and neighbors. I had her committed to be a ward of the state. It was under their care that she was homeless on the streets, a great harm to herself and others. I don't know what the solution is but it is not to be taken lightly. It is real and it is dangerous.

My brother suffered it too and eventually took his own life. He was a talented artist, crazy imagination and humour. Oddly, I notice how Jeffrey's writing is so neat. Some schizophrenics can have hidden talents and as you say, if the support is there and they take their meds, things can be fine, but if not, things can go downhill fast. I hope your sister is getting some form of stability and is not homeless.

I know some with this disease will have times they may seem normal and people dont understand or arent trained enough to look for behaviour and signs theyre showing.
Although your sister sounds like a severe case so i dont know if she was like this. But im guessing if you felt okay to have her live with you then she must have had her good moments.
It takes really takes life long treatment and more studying to help people understand this illness.
Even some medical professionals ive met dont understand how to deal with this ilness. But in the past alot of people that were born with this illness dont end up living very long. Then again as a society we didnt even know about this illness for generations. It feels like even now, because the illness is considered so rare, we still dont know much about it. Ive never heard of a person living almost all their life with this illness and living up to 68 into their old age.
Then having government programs be cut man thats going backwards when people like your sister will always need help.
I know care aids where i live dont get paid enough for their hardwork. And the governement here makes it so difficult for others in other countries to transfer over.
So theyre dealing with a shortage of nurses aids or care aids and yet even people coming from outside the countries are facing many roadblocks meanwhile people like your sister are the ones suffering. Alot of nursing homes are treated between as a cross between old age homes and as psychiatric units for people with degenerative or mental illness and that need full time care.
I really hope she gets the help she needs.

My mom was bipolar combined with schizophrenia. She wasn't violent except for the rare occasion. She did have voices talking to her. One voice told her that the calculator that the school had given me, was secretly meant for stealing social security numbers. She thought "people" were performing surgery on me while I slept to take my organs & would look for scars. Luckily she didn't have the inclination to really hurt someone. This illness requires alot of attention. I'm not excusing this crime, but I do feel compassion for the severely mentally ill. As well as the victims.

Something I wanted to touch on is where Kelsey says “He told me he would never do that (hurt someone)” but that “his voices make him.” Now when I was younger and heard stuff like that I would scoff and think that was just an excuse. Then at around 18 I had my first Schizophrenic episode; it was the start of a very difficult and depressing path. Now at 26, I can shed some insight to the “the voices made m do it” thing;
With hearing voices within a psychotic episode, it’s not so cut and dry that it’s a hallucination; it’s hard to tell what are your own true thoughts and what are delusions, and hallucinations like voices typically play VERY hard i to your delusions. Really, Schizophrenia is like having your true self and then this separate, gremlin or poltergeist type being share your mind, with it being able to play games with your sense of reality. If your brain or this “gremlin” finds something that distresses you a lot, it will latch on to that thing. Your brain very much is self-destructive with the illness, especially during psychosis. So the brain latching on to something, like say, “do this” or ”do that” would start slow then just exponentially increase in repetitiveness until it feels like all you’re hearing is that one thing over and over again, nonstop. I’ve actually caused myself harm because I just wanted some peace from my brain for a few minutes.
So while hurting OTHERS is a bit more extreme, the general idea of “voices making you do --“ isn’t as much of a crock as it sounds. I pointed out the harming others thing above because even being Schizophrenic, there’s a very clear line between harming yourself and harming another living creature or human being. Definitely in no way is the illness an excuse for harming others though, that is out of the question.
TL;DR: Voices that accompany schizophrenia DO latch on to ideas and commands but the individual themselves still do retain control of their actions. The truth is, it isn’t out of the question for someone to believe that actually doing what the voices want will get them to stop; in all likelihood though, it wouldn’t change anything and the voices would just latch on to another command and so on from there. My schizophrenia is mild to moderate though so I can’t really speak on how intense it is for someone with a more severe case.
Schizophrenia is not an excuse, it's an illness. For you having the illness I'm surprised at how you're speaking about it, and it shows that you don't know too much about even your own illness. The thoughts and voices become so realistic that in can invoke excessive fear or even as if you're not yourself or in your own body. Split reality. You don't know what's real or not or what's right or wrong in a psychotic episode and sometimes in day to day life. Sometimes or most times it's very hard to tell if what you're doing is even real.

This detective is absolutely terrible at his job, the way he kept accusing that poor woman of lying when she was clearly telling him the truth and telling her not to use her hands when she is hearing impaired and relies on her hands to communicate is disgusting. I really feel for anyone who has had the misfortune of having to deal with this man.
How in the hell were no other detectives monitoring this to step in? I don't care how many years he said he's been doing this, but he's absolute garbage at it. It forever adds to the trauma she suffers from finding out why she was being questioned at all. If they were a little more forward, it would have been a good bit easier.

My brother has schizophrenia he used to hear voices and see things ….I’d come home and he’d be in full blown arguments with no one, it was so scary, a few times I thought he had someone in the room with him but he didn’t. It took me three years to get mental health to take it seriously ..and he was medicated against his will. Three years it’s been since he’s been on his meds and he’s like a new man, he still has some moments of delusion but they don’t control his life anymore
It’s a really crappy and insidious disorder. From what I understand, it is partially caused in the center of the brain that syncs up what we hear and see (we technically see before we hear things) and ties it all together in memory so we know it’s a recalled event rather than a current event. Bad a guy, a few years ahead, diagnosed. Biggest teddy bear before but some real difficulties after.
my uncle had schizophrenia and then served in the vietnam war. after that he had totally lost it and on one instance aimed a shotgun at my father. today he is not doing amazing but definitely better than he was. he cant live by himself (i believe due to other mental/physical health complications) but his 6 surviving siblings meet up with him every weekend.

And the way she keeps eye contact is definitely not because she was lying, but because she was reading his lips. I am very slightly hard of hearing, and cant half understand that detective either, so she definitely needed to lip read. This whole situation is awful, but half of the things the detectives do here shows they dont quite understand disabilities. And as someone wio actively uses sign language, "i dont need your hands" or what is known as "quiet hands" is highly rude to say to someone who uses sign language. Its like telling someone to shut up. Like taking away their form of communication.
Kelsey's interrogation was heartbreaking to watch. I knew of this story but didn't know she existed / was interviewed. As someone who is hearing impaired I really feel for her.

I’m assuming that she wasn’t read her rights as it was a voluntary interview, and if she HAD been involved, he could’ve seriously jeopardised the case that would’ve been made against her. It was lucky for him that she was innocent here, he could’ve potentially allowed an accomplice to murder to walk free. That being said, it was incredibly foolish of her to lie like that.
