Welcome to The Museum Of Transport. A Unique collection telling the story of Greater Manchester's Road Public Transport Heritage almost over 200 Years up to the Current Day.The Museum is managed entirely by volunteers who give their time to run The Museum and also to restore and maintain The Museum's fleet of vintage buses and other vehicles. Years of work go into every vehicle from a wreck to leaving The Museum on it's first trip out looking as good as new. The volunteers at The Museum do all the work that's needed with the skills to do any restoration job from repairing engines and electrical wiring to painting and welding. But they also do hundreds of other jobs that are needed around this historic former bus garage to make this the best museum of it's kind in the UK. The Museum's displays recreate an golden age when almost everyone travelled by bus to their work and play. The Travel Agency, The Traffic Office and The General Manager's Office that the humble bus driver might only see when he was in trouble. And The Museum's archives contain a treasure trove of precious documents detailing the history of Greater Manchester's Transport history. There's only enough space available to display a fraction of the collection at any one time from Bus Stops, Timetables, Magazines and Photographs to Detailed Drawings and Maps and even Cinefilm Footage taken long ago. But the real trasures of The Museum's collection are it's vehicles dating from 1890 to 1990 and most of them are ready start their engines on the buses. Manchester was the cradle of Bus Travel as it was for Railways. The U.K.'s first bus service started here in Salford in 1824. The Buses tell a story than any book can and on Special Event Days, The Museum's buses give free rides giving old timers fond memories and giving youngsters a ride back in time.We hope you very much enjoy your visit today, If you have any questions, They'll be happy to help you.

Driver Stan Butler (Reg Varney), Conductor Jack Harper (Bob Grant), and Inspector Blakey (Stephen Lewis) visited the museum when it first opened years ago.

another boring video...only joking. I may not be into buses like I was anymore but I still like reading about them and, when I remember to bring my camera, taking photos of them. So, Dennis Talbot, don't take what I said at the start of this comment personally but I have to say that a visit to the Museum is no longer the event it once was to me. Whereas I used to spend at least a couple of hours there, nowadays it's about half an hour then out before you can say '"Stan Butler!".
