Moving trolleybuses at the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester

  • In December 2018, the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester spent a day moving vehicles to improve displays and position buses in the workshop to receive attention. Two of the most rare and interesting moves were those of our trolleybuses, Manchester and 1250 which have not ventured outdoors for many years.
The moves inside the Museum were performed pushing by hand: the transfer from upper hall to lower hall used our AEC ‘Matador’ tow lorry, itself a Museum exhibit and almost eighty years old.
The moves were steady and careful, bearing in mind both the age of the vehicles and the need for personal safety, so this may not be a spectacular video; but it does capture a very unusual vehicle movement and the first time a trolleybus has been seen on the streets of Manchester for many years.

That AEC Matador is beautiful, a treat in itself.

Matador is the truck moving the busses about? That thing is awesome, but what’s with the observation lounge?

Great seeing the vehicles but if they are concerned about safety they should have one person giving instructions and hand signals, having two doing their own thing is a recipe for disaster.

One person was in charge, the other was acting as the eyes and ears for the Matador as visibility from its cab is poor and it’s too loud to hear instructions - so his job was to replay the instructions to the Matador driver and monitor the angle of the tow bar in the Matador’s towing eye.
