Jacks voice actor really does a great job in this game. The scenes with his dad are definite highlights, but for me another is a brief one when he is in that tank suit arguing with Redwood, saying; "He was your partner for 20 years! You were the best man at his fucking wedding! You rewarded his friendship with a bullet. You made this personal!" I just loved the raw delivery in his voice in that, conveying there is nothing he can say that will make him stop or hesitate.
The problem I had with Jack Slate's character is that they tried making him into this super-serious/edgy vigilante when his dorky personality from the first game made him a lot more likable.
12:22 This is actually pretty funny since GCPD could be Gotham City and this setting totally fits it. Imagine Batman watching Jack from a gargoyle just obliterating thugs.
Knowing Batman he'd trust Jack as he understands Jack is one of the honorable cops on the force who genuinely wants justice and to protect innocents aka actually live up to the mantra "protect and serve" while having "reservations" about Jack's methods likewise Jack would trust Batman despite the fact Batman is technically a vigilante who doesn't kill. Along with Batman saying Jack has a good partner in Shadow. With Jack being weirded out that Batman works with a teenage partner but respects that Batman at the least has a partner watching his back. And concerning Commissioner Gordon he'd definitely get headaches due to Jack's loose-cannon/cowboy methods and at times flippant attitude and be curious on why Jack decided to have his K9 partner be his pet Alaskan Malamute/Wolf hybrid but will admit Shadow is a "damn good police K9" even if Shadow is a little "to aggressive when taking down criminals" and likewise will keep Jack on the force simply because Jack despite the loose-cannon/cowboy methods and time flippant attitude is a honorable cop who genuinely wants justice and to protect innocents and is aware that Jack is incorruptible aka Jim knows that Jack won't take bribes or become a dirty cop and will appreciate Jack being straight and honest with him concerning situations.
Fun Fact: Rodger Bumpass known as Professor Membrane from Invader Zim, Squidward from SpongeBob and Hannover Fiste & Dr. Anrak from Heavy Metal also voiced Redwater. So the final boss of this game is Squidward.
I remember this one when i was really young. Kinda makes me wanna play it again, mainly for Shadow and nostalgia. Thank you for reminding me of this great childhood game :)
It's just really stupid that they chose a husky for the breed. Anyone who has had or interacted with a husky knows that they are useless guard dogs. They are either aloof and hyper, or just kind of love everything. But they are usually not obedient at all, and they have absolutely no guard dog tendencies. They are pretty wolf like in appearence, so many, many people assume that they are aggressive. They can be pretty rough with other dogs, and they totally might eat your cat or other small pets...but they probably won't even bark if someone breaks in. My friend's big male husky got its head stuck behind the radiator trying to escape when someone broke into his apartment...poor boy. Another friend of mine had a husky that decided to escape and go off roaming when a burglar came. Oh well.
PS- They really should have picked an Akita for the role. If you are in the market for a hella tough guard dog that looks like a wolf, Akitas are your tribe. Just do some research- they are going to get so defensive of you that you may need to put the dog elsewhere if you have company coming over. They also get so protective of babies and young kids that your children's friends may be in real danger if your Akita decides that the playmates are a threat to your offspring. I'll shut up now. Nice video.
When I was a kid I remember getting this game and it was awesome I loved playing a shadow and his executions are quite brutal and in my opinion Shadow is the best and toughest dog in gaming history! 😎👍
Thinking back, this was a good game for the time. They could have done better with the weapon upgrade system. At least they did Shadow justice in the stealth objectives. Hopefully one day we'll see another game in the franchise come out where namco took their time with it.
This game definitely had the best story as it genuinely had some good twists and really cool reinterpretations of certain characters. Jack's dad was an actual character and their relationship is explored better(and voiced by Roy Campbell). I also really like the origins of Jack's scar in this game(along with that final boss fight).
I first played this game in 2021. So I played it a lot later after its release. Anyway, I feel this is an underrated game. Also, I had always thought Faith and Hildy looked so similar that maybe she could have been this game's version of Hildy, but was changed. I mean, the stadium was called "Pinnacle Stadium," and Jack had talked about William Pinnacle, and the mayor in this one was Gloria Exner. It was a different timeline, yes, but still.
Namco now is part of Bandai Namco and they mostly publish japanese games like jprgs fightings and etc, I don't remember them publishing anything more western type like shooters for a while
Another fantastic review, you wrapped up this series nicely with the best of the 3! I recently played this & love the over the top violence! You should review Volatile's "Reservoir Dogs" which was a late entry at the tail end of the original Xbox & PS2 cycle! It's a very good looking violent game as well with excellent level design & realism!
While I loved the first game, I never even knew this game existed until now. I wouldn't mind seeing Namco bring this series back, but the publisher seems to be more focused on "distinctly Japanese" games nowadays.
If we get another attempt at rebooting this game I would have them bring back some of the gameplay elements from the first game namely the minigames while keeping a lot of the elements from this game especially the greater focus on Shadow including the sections where we play as the Alaskan Malamute/Wolf Hybrid. And for the plot I say give the plot from the 2nd game another shot only this time add a prequel level set during Jack's youth where he adopts Shadow as Retribution seemed to hint that Jack had Shadow as a boy as Frank mentions adopting Shadow was both good and annoying as good for Jack as he had a "sibling" to hang out with and talk to but annoying as a good amount of his paycheck went to buying Shadow's dog food.
This game reemerges in my memories from time to time, - had a lot of fun with it back in the day. Although, I've played original DtR and its sequel on PS2, Retribution is the only one in the franchise I've actually finished. This game even gave you some cool Xbox Avatar items for different achievements, which is always a good thing! I wouldn't exactly call it a hidden gem, but it's a very good game (for its time), nonetheless. early 2010s era of gaming was filled with creative and bold ideas. Can't imagine a Dead to Rights sequel coming out nowadays... Thank you for the video! It was very interesting to watch, remembering the good ol' days. I'm not sure if you've made a review of NeverDead (2012) or not, but you should check it out, - I remember this game made a lot of noise before release, but then completely vanished.
Still vividly remember playing this on a friends PS3 on his absolutely wrecked CRT Television and yet despite the grain, many of the levels had such a great art-style with several locales being a blend between art-deco and gothic architecture, I'd love to see another shooter with such massive scale buildings to venture into.
I absolutely loved the combat system in this game. From close hand to hand Muay Thai style, to long ranged fire arms. Whenever I return to this game, I like going on brawler mode for how sick and varied Jack's takedowns and combos. I could tell Retribution is the easiest game to achieve its hard difficulty.
I thought the more Sci-fi concept guns looked really weird at first, but they fit really well with the heavy comic book/batman Arkham influence the world and visuals have
We've had a few fun throwback to those gens. Wanted Dead, Evil West, and Gungrave Gore are worth a try. They can be bought cheap on sale. Wanted Dead in particular recently received an update that fixed a few issues people had.
At least the difference between Grant City and Carcer City is that there is more redemption for Grant than Carcer. Grant City has its uncorrupted police officers. While Carcer City has creeps that roams the night time streets. And the police aren’t really your protectors. Just your bullies with badges. And also some of your Grant city cops do have husky companions as their only best friends.

I remember playing this way back when. Even got the GAC skin on playstation home. It's among the most macho edgy remakes I've ever seen. Esp. looking back at the original. Also Jack is the biggest hypocrite ever, being exactly what the corrupt cop guy is looking for in a GAC officer while claiming not to be. I'm pretty sure there's cut content when dealing with the black hand triad. The two cops that are executed kinda come out of nowhere. I assume they were working for the tongue eating man yet that got cut. No pun intended. Lastly: justice for longshoreman x.
back when i'm pretty sure namco was short on cash based on all the product placement in their games at the time, from the alpinestars jacket in this game to the globe shoes in splatterhouse or the bullet club t shirts in tekken tag tournament 2

Nice to see the series wrapped up! It may not be the finest game ever made but it definitely sticks in my head as being a good time even if it _is_ a bit of a mixed bag. But damn it, not much beats the satisfaction of jump kicking someone over cover, taking them as a shield, shooting anyone who is left before catapulting said shield into the abyss.
My favorite is still Dead to Rights 2. I dunno it just gave me everything that I ever want from an action game. Badass protagonist, focus on shootout, big arenas to fight and flexible combat.
It's good to see that Vanhorn was a great dad. Too bad about what happens to him.......guy must be a cat with all his lives. Also, Jack looking like Chris Redfield from Re5 in points of the game.

Also kind of funny that this is the first time a female supporting character in DTR didn't die. Before this game, every single girl dies in DTR1, 2, and Reckoning.

got to say i love edge so this was way better, dorky is getting overplayed for me.

This game reminds me of the punisher game from 2005, but you're a cop and you replace the interrogation mechanics with a dog and fist fighting.

Shadow is so much like Riley from COD ghosts. Both are good bois who deserve head pats for being the best thing about the game.
You mean Riley is like Shadow?
Shadow existed before Riley.
Chop would be up there if the rest of the game surrounding wasn’t so great.
