Each time one is killed, the more powerful the others become. They showcased that insane power very well early on with the villain moving faster than normal human speed while simultaneously taking out a SWAT team in essentially one go. At this point I believe its indicated that there are only two versions left of Jet Li's character which is why they're both insanely strong. Gives the movie a pretty good excuse to really dial up the fantasy and drama with the fact that one can become so powerful, you essentially defy physics.

I remember my first experience watching Jet Li was in theater watching Lethal Weapon 4, and boy did he make one hell of a first impression on the entire audience.
this is by far my favourite martial arts movie, both for the metal music including Disturbed and a notable inclusion of Jason Statham when he had hair.
8:28 Gabe Law didn't want to kill Yu Law. because, if he did, there was a chance that the whole universe would die along with Yu Law. cuz pretty much, the story is that Yu Law was hopping from universe to universe, killing every version of him. and he and Gabe Law were the only two left. with each kill, the energy from the dead versions of Jet Li's characters, in the other universes, divided amongst the survivors. Gabe and and Jason Statham's characters wanted him alive, so they can take him back to the headquarters that Jason's character came from, and send Yu Law to a place called Hades Universe.
The ending was pretty fun but kinda stupid.. Hey we have this extremely overpowered villain lets put him in one place with all kinds of baddies so he can pummel everyone he sees.. which he did.

The one thing I wanted to mention is Gabe's character didn't start using Baqua until last half only. The first half was him meeting force with force. The significance of the scene was he practiced Baqua to keep his balance and the ring rounded him of it. - there was a scene at the beginning where he trained his Baqua after getting back from his initial confrontation with Yu Law's character.
For more Jet Li, how about Kiss of the Dragon? One scene he fights an early MMA opponent in close quarters. I think you already did the other scene with the twins.

the reason we don't get jet li in more movies these days is his health went way down.. He got sick somehow, sad but these movies are more epic now because of that reason.
As an FYI, the reason they fight similarly at the start of the fight is because they're on walkways, which favours the linear style, and Gabe is looking for revenge for Yulaw killing his wife. So he's just coming straight for Yulaw out of anger. It's not until he gets beaten down that he lets go of the aggression and fights as he trained in a more open space that his style emerges.

That moment when you realize the track is Blood Brothers by Papa Roach. Also yes, Jason Statham, Delroy Lindo, and Carla Gugino (the mom from Spy Kids) are also in this movie.
Fight choreography is story telling. This is one of my favorites. So they need to make movements exaggerated and clean and stop moving at the end of each, so that the audience can read what they were going for. And then each action gets a visible clear readable reaction. Beat. And then the agressor either goes again, or the defender takes a turn on the offence. Good actors can do this clearly and still make it feel fluid and natural, more than in this fight, but that is like going up on stage and delivering Shakespeare monologue in perfect rhymes and make it feel like regular conversation. My old kung fu club once had a guest teacher who specialized in bagua and xing yi. Footwork footwork footwork for two weeks. And some very light sparring. Bagua, as I understand it is all about getting off centerline, circling either left or right and changing direction very quickly. For a noob like me it was disorienting. It felt as if the old geezer could dematerialize and then appear behind my back, softly touching my neck, groin or kidneys. But even the advanced students who did a lot more sparring said that it was frustrating. I don’t know if the bagua principles are still viable against skilled fighters, but if you could get it working I imagine that it’d look something like Vasily Lomachenko. Xing yi was rude. Keep a tight guard and no matter what your opponent does: small step forward and counter punch. The punches are generally small and corkscrewy and doubles as guard or deflection against an incoming punch. Again, I don’t know how much of this could be translated to a fight against a skilled opponent. My senior clubmates said that when they sparred our guest teacher and tried to deal with his damn bagua by being more defensive and probing, he would pull out his xing yi and go on a strong linear attack. Those two styles are often trained together btw. Like most other traditional martial arts, it’s hard to know exactly how much is showmanship and fantasy and how much is sound principles and potentially functional tools for the fighting toolbox. Because most places that teach this stuff don’t spar. And without sparring everything is useless.
Notice how when the sparks slow down and they’re fighting at normal speed. From a background character’s perspective, like Jason Statham, Gabe and Yulaw are fighting faster than the human eye can track.
In bagua it works to a physics principle that every action has an opposite reaction. By moving in circles and moving one limb counter to the other you can generate more power. MMA fighters do it all the time, they just aren't as circular in their footwork or their hand movements. Also keeping the hands open and covering the lines to your head is, situationally, more effective than covering up like a boxer when you are facing kicks and knees and other strikes that aren't fist. You also see that in MMA. You'll notice when he performs the cross block, he isn't staying locked up again his adversary, he is moving backwards to readjust. It's not the best option but it is the case in a fight that sometimes you do what works in that situation.
All 3 internal arts Taiji, Bagua and Xingyi use Full body integration power generation. Essentially transferring all power in a spiral/rotation towards the same point. Having your body move in opposite directions will break the body structure and have the power greatly diminished when they move in separate directions The covering up for some boxers is due to the rules of boxing. Almost all traditional styles (including western pugilism) had their hands out to defend against things like grabs/throws, multiple attackers etc. Having rules will inadvertently cause an art to gravitate in a way that makes it suit the rules, but be less effective when outside of it. There is a saying in Xingyi Quan: The elbows should not leave the ribs and the hands should not leave the centre line. This is meant to protect the floating ribs and the centre. Of course it is not meant to be taken to the extend where one literally never has the elbows leave the ribs XD

Fair do’s “The One” is an awesome movie. It has everything from a love story to martial arts and awesome fighting and a technically first appearance on film from Jason Statham. If you haven’t watched this movie you need to and don’t forget the popcorn.
If you have not seen it, then you really should watch Drunken sword with jet li, not a movie, but a style like drunk boxing.....the unpredictability is insane and I would not go any where close if he had a sword and were upset with me :P

Have you seen this? It's worth a watch. Interesting theory, hundreds of realities and bad Jet Li travels between many of them to kill himself in every one, and there is an agency that regulates these things.
The interesting thing about Chinese martial arts is they'll take one concept and try to build a whole martial art around it. For example how an animal fights, hence why there are multiple animal styles. In Bagua, it's the concept of the circle, using rotation to deflect and attack and circle an opponent.
Negation is part of all 3 internal arts (Taiji, Bagua Xingyi) The Trigram part of Bagua gives it great footwork/movement, but of course in application, nobody actually keeps going in circles like that.
Jet li will always be a legend since the start of his movie "legends from shaolin" to "once upon a time in China" for his leading role "wong fei hung" that put him on the map.

Two sides, same coin. Xingyiquan (Xingyi Liuhe Quan) is what’s commonly known as Iron Fist. Baguazhang is the “soft” style. If I remember correctly, Bagua is the sword, and Xingyi is the bow and arrow. There’s a beautiful history behind these two internal kung fu styles.
Xinyi Liuhe came before Xingyi and though there are similarities, they are different arts. Haven't heard about the iron fist bit, though, Xinyi and Xingyi are both known for their power. Actually all 3 internal arts, Taiji, Bagua and Xingyi are known to be 'softer' arts. But calling them 'soft' can be misleading as they contain both Structure giving them solidity/power and relaxation making them seem 'soft' Bagua was derivated from Saber and Xingyi from Large lance (12 foot spear)

I’ve seen some Qigong combined with Taiji, joint locking, and some other very practical close combat techniques. I’ve also seen some serious McDojo teaching 😒 It’s nice to get some real conversation.

The reason during the first half of the fight you couldnt see a difference in fighting styles is because our good guy was angry (you know, for some STRANGE reason) and so was more focused on butt kicking. Then when he got wrecked he remembered his wife, everything he stands for, etc, and got up into his "real" stance and style. You know, standard protagonist fare really. Its honestly a good movie, yeah dated as heck, but entertaining to watch. Also, it has some of the best lines at the end. You just dont expect to hear Jet Li declare "You, are all MY bitches!" to a prison planet. :p

I was just explaining why they had similar styles to each other for the first half of the fight and why it made sense from a narrative standpoint and even from a realism standpoint. 4:39 the bad guy version of Jet Li (Yu Law) killed Gabe's wife. i'm not sure why Gabe took the ring off though. he'd probably want to remember her. but i'm glad he didn't though. otherwise, they'd have sent the wrong person to this placed call "Hades Universe".
Dont forget in that time of the movi both are most likely considered demigods. the plot is about that Bad guy travells between a multiverse to kill every other version of himself so that their power and energie will be transfered to him. at this point of the movie them both are the last excisting versions in the entire multiverse. sharing the combine power of all other versions between them.
One of Statham's earlier movies. He plays the backup guy behind Delroy Lindo. You have to understand the plot to understand why they have such powerful moves in this clip. Supposedly, there is a multiverse of Jet Li's character; some bad, some good. The main evil Jet Li is going through the multiverses eliminating other versions of himself. Each time he eliminates one, those left get more powerful. If he can be the last one standing, then his power will be unmatched.
I loved this movie growing up as a Kid even now, I was amazed at the concept of the film and was kinda excited at the thought of me from another multiverse would just start killing off other versions of us so we could get stronger 😂
Yu (Grey shirt) used a more traditional "straight ahead" attack style. This represented how the character thought and acted... by being basically nothing but a straight-forward wrecking ball. Gabe (Blue jumper) used a more traditional "open stance" attack style. The represented how the character thought and acted ... by being more flexible and approaching the problem from different directions or intentions. It was great use of visually 2 different fighting styles to represent 2 different personalities and how only one of them could really function to address the overall concept of the movie which was "multi-universe versions of the same people". By being more "open and flexible", Gabe was able to overcome the basic and rather limited concept of just "straight ahead" thinking. Through movie concepts, Yu was the 'stronger' fighter... but Gabe was the 'better' fighter.

We have to remember, we're watching this in slow motion. They fight in the falling sparks. Wulong beat up all those cops before the first one got done falling. He used dual motorcycles as tonfa batons. My point is that to the common person, this is an unrealistic fight. To these two, throwing a dedicated strike is the only way TO hit the other. You can't throw a random strike or a wild swipe at either of these two. They'll casually counter and gain the offense. It's chess, with our bodies as the pieces. Some fighters are good enough that you have to throw combos at them, because they're going to dodge/block/counter the first strike.
Fun fact: Dwayne Johnson was the first person that they plan for this movie. I wish to see that now that technology has developed since this movie came out

Yes it's super cheesy at times but the premise is a good one and Jet Li gives a great performance.

Does anyone know who the double is? They basically had to film every part of the fight twice, with the one facing the camera being Li, and the one with their back to the camera being someone capable of performing Li's moves, in both styles

Have you seen this? It's worth a watch. Interesting theory, hundreds of realities and bad Jet Li travels between many of them to kill himself in every one, and there is an agency that regulates these things.

The interesting thing about Chinese martial arts is they'll take one concept and try to build a whole martial art around it. For example how an animal fights, hence why there are multiple animal styles. In Bagua, it's the concept of the circle, using rotation to deflect and attack and circle an opponent.
Negation is part of all 3 internal arts (Taiji, Bagua Xingyi) The Trigram part of Bagua gives it great footwork/movement, but of course in application, nobody actually keeps going in circles like that.

Two sides, same coin. Xingyiquan (Xingyi Liuhe Quan) is what’s commonly known as Iron Fist. Baguazhang is the “soft” style. If I remember correctly, Bagua is the sword, and Xingyi is the bow and arrow. There’s a beautiful history behind these two internal kung fu styles.
Xinyi Liuhe came before Xingyi and though there are similarities, they are different arts. Haven't heard about the iron fist bit, though, Xinyi and Xingyi are both known for their power.
Actually all 3 internal arts, Taiji, Bagua and Xingyi are known to be 'softer' arts. But calling them 'soft' can be misleading as they contain both Structure giving them solidity/power and relaxation making them seem 'soft'
Bagua was derivated from Saber and Xingyi from Large lance (12 foot spear)

It is not a martial art by itself but a form of energy building exercise

I’ve seen some Qigong combined with Taiji, joint locking, and some other very practical close combat techniques. I’ve also seen some serious McDojo teaching 😒 It’s nice to get some real conversation.
@@gregorylim8409 makes sense that Xingyi is a spear instead a bow and arrow. The concentrated punches that shoot forward from a focused energy source resemble spear thrusts. The chops and short kicks are like slashes or pole strikes. I can see it in my head now 😁

The reason during the first half of the fight you couldnt see a difference in fighting styles is because our good guy was angry (you know, for some STRANGE reason) and so was more focused on butt kicking. Then when he got wrecked he remembered his wife, everything he stands for, etc, and got up into his "real" stance and style. You know, standard protagonist fare really. Its honestly a good movie, yeah dated as heck, but entertaining to watch. Also, it has some of the best lines at the end. You just dont expect to hear Jet Li declare "You, are all MY bitches!" to a prison planet. :p
If remember correctly, bad guy killed good guys wife. So makes sense that he was angry.
@@guesswhosback8851 Thats right, it absolutely does make sense, that (for some STRANGE reason) was sarcasm. I was just explaining why they had similar styles to each other for the first half of the fight and why it made sense from a narrative standpoint and even from a realism standpoint. Someone murders your wife, you are going to be angry, and lose some self control for a bit.

4:39 the bad guy version of Jet Li (Yu Law) killed Gabe's wife. i'm not sure why Gabe took the ring off though. he'd probably want to remember her. but i'm glad he didn't though. otherwise, they'd have sent the wrong person to this placed call "Hades Universe".
He had to take his ring off for an MRI, but Lu Law interrupted it, and he didn’t have a chance to get it back

the plot is about that Bad guy travells between a multiverse to kill every other version of himself so that their power and energie will be transfered to him. at this point of the movie them both are the last excisting versions in the entire multiverse. sharing the combine power of all other versions between them.
Baguazhang is a lot of fun to practice, it’s internal work.
One of Statham's earlier movies. He plays the backup guy behind Delroy Lindo. You have to understand the plot to understand why they have such powerful moves in this clip. Supposedly, there is a multiverse of Jet Li's character; some bad, some good. The main evil Jet Li is going through the multiverses eliminating other versions of himself. Each time he eliminates one, those left get more powerful. If he can be the last one standing, then his power will be unmatched.

I loved this movie growing up as a Kid even now, I was amazed at the concept of the film and was kinda excited at the thought of me from another multiverse would just start killing off other versions of us so we could get stronger 😂
This film is an absolute classic and the idea is fantastic and again Jet li is the best.
Yu (Grey shirt) used a more traditional "straight ahead" attack style. This represented how the character thought and acted... by being basically nothing but a straight-forward wrecking ball.
Gabe (Blue jumper) used a more traditional "open stance" attack style. The represented how the character thought and acted ... by being more flexible and approaching the problem from different directions or intentions.
It was great use of visually 2 different fighting styles to represent 2 different personalities and how only one of them could really function to address the overall concept of the movie which was "multi-universe versions of the same people". By being more "open and flexible", Gabe was able to overcome the basic and rather limited concept of just "straight ahead" thinking. Through movie concepts, Yu was the 'stronger' fighter... but Gabe was the 'better' fighter.

We have to remember, we're watching this in slow motion. They fight in the falling sparks. Wulong beat up all those cops before the first one got done falling. He used dual motorcycles as tonfa batons.
My point is that to the common person, this is an unrealistic fight. To these two, throwing a dedicated strike is the only way TO hit the other. You can't throw a random strike or a wild swipe at either of these two. They'll casually counter and gain the offense. It's chess, with our bodies as the pieces. Some fighters are good enough that you have to throw combos at them, because they're going to dodge/block/counter the first strike.
It was a pretty good movie. You need to watch the entire movie. And yes that was Jason s. Before he got “a” list status

There was different versions of Jet Li's in each universe and every time the main bad one would kill one the other ones got more powerful and faster.
