Shergar was a fantastic horse...always loved watching him accelarate away from the field on the final straight. Evil people brought this great animal to a terrible end.
I was at Ascot for this race back in 1981, fantastic horse an honour to see him. I remember he used to run with his tongue hanging out. The King George was once one of the top races in the flat season calendar, sad to see it's decline.
the 80s produced some outstanding horses. shergar, dancing brave, nashwan, slip anchor, el gran senor, reference point, golden fleece (the best he ever rode, according to Pat Eddery), ardross et al.
@Stephen Small He was retired straight after the Derby which will always hinder his rating as 3-year olds tend to improve during the season. He never had the chance so its speculative and TF wont do that
The rumour is he was machine gunned and died slipping in his own blood, such a sad sad end to a really great horse. The KG wasn't his finest hour and truth be told his Derby was one of the weakest ever, but he flew through the mud that day in a way only an exceptional horse can. The greatest ever... probably not, but he had a charisma that few horses have ever possessed, even before his kidnapping. Horses like Sea The Stars, Sea Bird and Frankel are revered in racing circles, but this horse went beyond that in a way few horses have ever achieved. A true legend.
Shergar also sired Maysoon who was placed in both the 1,000 and the Oaks (beaten by Midway Lady both times if my memory serves me well)... but maybe the biggest problem Shergar's only crop faced, was that they were born in the same year as Dancing Brave !! (tongue in cheek)
It's all perspective I guess... from a crop of less than 30 horses who raced, he managed to sire horses who either won or were placed in Classics over all distances from 8f to 1m6f... I think that's pretty good considering at the time racing was becoming dominated by the Northern Dancer line... I liked that about Shergar... there wasn't one US bred horse 4 lines deep in his pedigree (and just 1 going 5 deep)... I'm pointing this out not to sound anti-American (because I'm not), but rather as it was an increasing rare contrast to the speedier American types that were becoming prevalent... which was not a bad thing, but I'm just naturally drawn to things that are different or unique... so I'm a Shergar fan all the way... loved Red Rum too... and that poor bugger probably died a virgin... lol
@@mrk24107 Shergar did sire a horse also named Cigar, was a bit of a morning glory just as Michael Stout also had a good on the gallops but not so good on the track son of Shergar called Danishgar.
@rohansrider, I think you're absolutely correct. Nijinsky, Shergar, Brigadier Gerard, Sea Bird, Giant's Causeway, Sinndar, Sakhee, Galileo, STS, and Dancing Brave. All fabulous colts. You can't logically knock one of them . But as you said, you can't logically compare them either. Because they are from different era's. All you can do is take a look at how tough their competition was during there racing era. Secretariat though beaten, was a machine. A great colt himself.
They were all wonderful. Comparisons are meaningless because they could not run against each other as they came from different eras. Just be glad they all gave you so much pleasure and stop bickering.
A beautiful animal. No words will ever capture what a disgusting crime occurred because of the stupidity of a select few. I have no doubt he would have been a huge influence at stallion.
To those arguing about which Horse was best, heres an alternative take on that. Lets say you could have a modern day champions series of races, with all the greats of yesteryear competing?? Tracks would be Newmarket, Epsom, the Curragh, Ascot, Doncaster and Longchamp. I guarantee there would be several different winners......horses for courses anyone ??🤔🤔....
Some racing rag said shergar didnt leave as lasting an impression here, as nijinsky and mill reef in previous runnings of the race?? Totally disagree, shergar had difficulty just before the straight from being hemmed in, once he got free and into top gear he won going away. Haters harp on about his 4th in the st leger, but michael stoute admitted it was his worst ever mistake running shergar there, the extra distance and the horse past his best for the season too, enabled cut above and glint of gold , two horses he beat with ease in the irish and english derbies respectively , to finish ahead of him at Doncaster......
Stoute won the race before the St Leger, and that was his first win in a month. His horses had been totally out of form. (Hopefully my memory is not failling me here.) The way Shergar ran that day I didn't get the impression he would have won, even if the race had been a mile and a half.
@@rdh-daliasjb3796 Very true, Shergar ran way below his best, actually this race gives you a slight sense than he had peaked for the season and maybe was over the top, but one of the jockeys in the St Ledge Starkey I think? claimed that he heard Shergar making strange noise during the race at the ten furlongs pole and knew he would be winning.
@MANUTD4LIFE171 No Im not wrong, Lestor Piggott was once quoted '' I think Nijinsky probably on his day was the most brilliant horse I've ever ridden. On a few days in the summertime as a three-year-old..." Research it, Lester Piggott and Nijinsky. In one article hes comparing Sea The Stars and Nijinsky by saying '' Sea The Stars is one of the best I've seen. He is comparable to Nijinsky, as he has it all, speed, stamina and lots of class." Please research before You start talking shite
I think after 4 easy wins in 1981 shergar was not at his best by the time the king george came around . He won well but not as spectacularly as his previous races. it wasnt that much of a surprise then in the st.leger, with an extra 2 furlongs to race over that he only finished 4th . He was obviously a spent force. But at sandown, chester, epsom and the curragh he was unbeatable...
@mallafets LMAO DB would not have got within 5 lenghs of the machine that was Shergar DB was a very good horse but he was exposed at Epsom in the derby were as Shergar was a massive 10 lenghs eased down winner of the race personaly i think it would have been no contest as Shergar was a one off and no horse since including STS would have got near him
Had it ever had been possible, I would've loved to have seen a four horse race between: 1. Shergar 2. Dancing Brave 3. Galileo 4. Sea The Stars You talk about one difficult horse race to try and handicap, that would surely make for one with just those four in the race. IMO.
Boris The Blade Galileo is rated at least 6lb inferior to all of those, and that’s timeform doing the horse a favour. His blood line is imperious, but on track the horse was no ‘great’. And it’s ‘you’re’, as in ‘ I bet *you’re* always scoring shite in grammar tests...’
Boris The Blade You’re clearly not very intelligent. It’s a fact that only ignorant people who barely went to school don’t know how to use ‘your’ and ‘you’re’. Stupid people lose money too. Just stop gambling and try reading some books instead?
@ASupremeOwl Shergar won the Derby by 10 lenghs he won his trial races leading up to the race by 10 and 12 respectively he then won the irish derby by 8 lenghs and the King George by 4 he was invincible over 1m4 and no horse could get near him at that trip, he lost in the leger because he didnt stay the trip had he gone for the Arc instead he would have won that, Dancing Brave lost in the Derby and the Breeders cup, he lost to sharastani and stoute knows sharastani wouldnt get within 10 of sherg
Dancing Brave only lost the Derby due to pilot error.(what was G.Starkey thinking?!) And as for the breeders cup race, that was in November, don't forget that DB had been on the go in Europe since April, how can a horse particularly of his calibre be expected to perform at that level is beyond me, after all there not machines! Also, in America horses not from Europe have an unfair advantage by running on drug enhancers. Dancing Brave may have lost the Derby but Subsequently thrashed Sharistani in 1986 King George as welll as in classic Arc de triumphe so there you have it.
@MANUTD4LIFE171 Nijinsky won the Leger after an attack of ringworm and came within a head of winning the Arc. That placed Nijinsky's achievements ahead of Shergar. Even Lestor Piggott said he had the most natural ability out of any horse he as ever run before or since, A true champion. But I think its fair to say that Dancing Brave was superior to Shergar or Nijinsky as a middle distance runner, He lost and beat Sharastani a foal of Nijinsky and beat the great Bering. All great horses...
This video is about Shergar, not any other horse so stop saying "golden fleece etc etc is better." The thing is no-one cares, this video is about Shergar.
@ASupremeOwl There may well be quotes by lester saying those things, But read his Autobiography were you will see he says Sir Ivor was the best horse he ever rode, I have the book infront of me ive actualy just this second double checked the book go and read his autobiography and you will see for yourself, i do not talk shit, what source do we trust more his autobiography or newspaper quotes
@MANUTD4LIFE171 As I've said before, Nijinsky, Dancing Brave and STS are the only horses I believe could have beat Shergar. Remember Shergar wasnt unbeaten. He lost the St Leger and finished a dissapointing fourth. He was a brilliant horse and the way he died was truly horrific a true champion but He was beatable as showed...
@ASupremeOwl I know full well about Nijinsky your claim the Piggott believed he was the best horse he rode is WRONG, various newspaper articles have said that lester believed Nijinsky to be the best so i can understand your not making it up but those newspapers are incorrect and have just assumed his opinion as Nijinsky was a triple crown winner, In Lester Piggotts Autobiography that i have he categoricaly states that the Great Sir Ivor the 1968 Guineas and Derby winner was the best he ever rode
@GBeret83 That would certainly be a great race but please dont be under any illusions as to what the result would have been, none of those would have seen which way the mighty Shergar went they would have been slugging it out for the places against the Greatest Deby winner ever Shergar, although im sure AOB would have a team of pacemakers trying to help out Galileo and get in the way of the rest
I hate the kidnappers and the gun said it all a part of the military or smth they had a fundraiser because they needed money but Shergar was gonna get boughten but some of the owners I think they were in Paris but the owners of the horse said no to buy him this will make sense later btw but when they kicked the person out of the car when they took Shergar in believe he was named Jim or smth but they kicked him out and said this thing king Neptune or smth and there were a lot of prank calls the owners in paris was called by them and the kidnappers was going to send them Shergars ear but they said no so then they got no other calls except Jim got this call named king Neptune and said if they did not pay they would kill shergar but shergar was already dead but they soon got a picture of the kidnapper and they figured out it was a part of the military that was trying to raise money but shergars remains were never found and this mystery is still going on today -2023
@MANUTD4LIFE171 And if You look at the 1986 Arc' Sharastani finished a distant 4th to Dancing Brave, The same horse that beat Him in the Derby. You cant keep a champion down for long... Like I said do abit of research first before You start handing disrespectful comments out to people!
@MANUTD4LIFE171 I dont paticularly care what races Shergar won leading up to the Derby, He was a magnificent horse who as enhanced legacy due to his horrendous and pointless death. Its not that I think hes overrated I just feel theres been many horses who are better than Him, Nijinsky, Dancing Brave, STS, Mill Reef, Brig Gerard just to name a few
@ASupremeOwl you may think my opinion is clueless but whatever way you look at it your the one getting your facts wrong on multiple occasions, Secreteriat was a very good horse but he was beaten on 6 occasions which is alot, despite that his belmont satakes victory was impressive only Arazi in 1991 breeders cup juvenile was more visually impressive but i realy dont feel secreteriat beat much in the belmont despite it being an outstanding performance
@MANUTD4LIFE171 Im using Khalid Abdullah because he owend Dancing Brave and as owned some magnificent horses in His lifetime but he gives special praise to Dancing Brave and rightly so. I will sit here until blue in the face and say that Dancing Brave was a better horse than Shergar and Im sure there will be many to back that claim. Dancing Brave won the Guinea's, Arc and George, Shergar won the Guinea's, Derby and George. They both lost races and are comparable on some aspects but...
Gorgeous horse - if he'd survived at stud, one can only dream of what his offspring would have done... As to his tragic end, the less said the better. Scum.
@MANUTD4LIFE171 Just like Yourself who doesnt feel Secretariat is a great horse and regards Shergar the greatest horse to ever grace the track. Like I said clueless...
@MANUTD4LIFE171 some big races like the Guineas but never ran the Derby and after that won some good group 1's but I wouldnt put in the same bracket as STS or Nijinsky there were horses of a lifetime. This is just My opinion it doesnt mean You have to get offended! As for no-one beating Shergar over a mile, What distance is the St.Leger won which Shergar lost?? 1m 6f so that claim from Yourself is already flawed!
@ASupremeOwl so you say as a middle distance runner he was better because he had more acceleration and a turn of foot and your using the guineas as your argument, the guineas is practicaly a sprint ofcourse hes going to go faster, over 1m4 he would not have got near Shergar and Sharastani is proof of this, sir micheal stoute has claimed he doubted sharastani would get within 10 lenghs of Shergar, the fact Sharastani beat Dancing Brave, DB did beat him but it was far from 10 lenghs work it out
@littlebay75 i reckon AOB would have 10 pacemakers in that race 3 to box in Shergar, 3 to box in Dancing Brave, 3 to box in STS, and 1 to rear violently across the track if any of them managed to get out
@MANUTD4LIFE171 If You want an example at how flawed the Timeform ratings are have a look at Celtic Swing, How this horse can be rated alongside the likes of Nijinsky or Alleged on 138 is beyond Me! Your right they aren't accurate
@ASupremeOwl as a middle distance runner I feel Dancing Brave was superior aswell as having more acceleration and turn of foot. Watch His Guinea's win he was frightening...
@ASupremeOwl You are the most ignorant poster i have ever met Sir Ivor also won the Champion stakes and washington international stakes, STS may have won all those races but look at the opposition, Brigadier Gerrard had a record of 17 wins from 18 races including 12 group 1s and i can assure you STS or Nijinsky never had a horse as good as Mill Reef to contend with who would have also beaten Nijinsky or STS
@MANUTD4LIFE171 Dancing Brave didnt win the Derby, Mill Reef did but Dancing Brave beat Mill Reef in the Guineas, He won the Arc and King George there isnt many 3 year olds who have done that including Shergar, His owner as even stated (Khalid Abdullah) who as owned many champion horses that Dancing Brave is the best horse He as ever owned. So before You start handing comments like ' limited knowledge ' to Me get a few facts straight Yourself, Or at least look beyond Shergar... Jesus!
@ASupremeOwl So Nijinsky Dancing Brave and STS were the only horses who could have beat Shergar...another clueless comment....Have you not heard of Ribot, Sir Ivor or Brigadier Gerrard those 3 were far superior to the 3 you have mentioned although they would have struggled to beat Shergar although no horse would have beaten Brigadier Gerrard over a mile but more than a mile Shergar would have won
@ASupremeOwl are you serious you wouldnt put The Brigadier in the same bracket as STS or Nijinsky, you realy dont have a clue what you are taliking about do you realise how good Mill Reef was who he demolished in the guineas, The Brigadier did eventualy step up to a 1m4 by winning the 1972 King George as a 4 year old, Timeform rate Mill Reef higher than both STS and Nijinsky yet the Brigadier is a further 3 pounds higher than Mill Reef im not saying ratings are 100% accurate but come on
@MANUTD4LIFE171 A man with limited racing knowledge?? Haha pot kettle black. You constantly go on about Shergar and Michael Stoute. Who is the greatest flat trainer of the 20th century?? Dr. Vincent O'Brien who trained Nijinsky who I feel could have beat Shergar. Remember Nijinsky won the 2000 Guineas, Derby, St. Leger, Irish Derby, King George, And lost the Arc by a neck. For Me He is the greatest. Shergar was a remarkable horse no doubts about that, I just feel there have been better horses
@ASupremeOwl a man with limited racing knowledge stop talking such nonsense all the horses you have listed also lost, Shergar won the Derby by 10 lenghs, Dancing Brave couldnt even win it, he was beaten by stoutes Sharastani the same person who trained shergar and Sir Micheal Stoute has said catagoricaly on many occasions that Shergar was the best he ever trained and he will never ever have a horse as good again
@MANUTD4LIFE171 To be fair this is getting a little boring now. I have my opinions You have Yours. I know exactly how good Mill Reef and Brigadier were and I value them highly. But for pure brilliance and natural ability I value Nijinsky, STS and Dancing Brave even higher and Im sure there would be many who would back My claims. At the end of the day You class Shergar the greatest theres ever been that just shows Your intelligiece in a nutshell...
@ASupremeOwl If you are going to argue with me and accuse me of talking "shite" then i suggest you actualy get your facts straight Shergar never even raced in the Guineas so how on earth did he win it, that just says all i need to know about your opinion you no nothing about racing, as for Shergar winning over any distance above a mile i was meaning upto 1m4 i should have stated that as your intelect couldnt work out what i ment
@ASupremeOwl You talk total rubbish Mill Reef raced in 1971 and 72 and Dancing Brave raced in 1986 so how on earth did Dancing Brave beat Mill Reef in the Guineas which proves you have limited knowledge Mill Reef was beaten by the great Brigadier Gerard in the Guineas but then went on to win the Derby in Brigadier Gerards Absence as Brigadier Gerrards connections were worried he wouldnt stay so they skipped the Derby

Ira killed this horse ...inhumane...
@ASupremeOwl as a middle distance runner I feel Dancing Brave was superior aswell as having more acceleration and turn of foot. Watch His Guinea's win he was frightening...
@ASupremeOwl I cant believe your using Khalid abdullah in your argument he is an owner he knows jack shit about horses
Jesus!
How could dancing brave have beaten mill reef in the Guineas mill reef was dead in 1986 you clown
Shergar was a remarkable horse no doubts about that, I just feel there have been better horses
did he beat any decent horses?
Yes Master Willie,Glint of Gold and Cut Above. He was also one of the top five highest rated Derby winners by Timeform.
HE IS THE BEST RACEHORSE IN THE WORLD IM HIS BIGGEST FAN OMG HE IS JUST TO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!:P
Ok i admit i need to take a chill pill. LOL
This is barely top class form, and neither was his Epsom win. Shergar is surely the most over rated horse in history.
@Stephen Small BUT IN MY OPINION HE IS THE GREATEST RACE HORSE IN MY OPINION
