  • Hey everyone! Welcome if you're new to my channel and Welcome back if you're a returning guest or subscriber! Thank you so much for being here!! Today's video is a tutorial on creating an opal effect bloom, also known as a mother of pearl effect. This is a soft, ethereal, gorgeous look that I've seen done in resin(my favorite!) and recreated in a regular acrylic pour by Tammy Anderson on her channel. I haven't seen any tutorial videos yet like this where I'm showing you how to acheive this effect in a bloom but that doesn't mean there isn't one out there already. A couple people in my facebook fluid art groups have shown their versions and I remembered that I'd written a quick note in my idea book several months ago then promptly forgot about it. Their pictures reminded me and I had to dig in given my strong affection of interference pigments and paints.
I created my pillow using Behr 7300 untinted deep base (base 3) and added small amounts of amsterdam acrylic ink in magenta and bright gold until I had the color I wanted, a soft, shimmery, translucent rose gold. You can use Sherwin Williams deep base however, it's thinner and slimier and you should add a small amount of matte gel for both stability of your cells and thickness of your pillow. You can use regular white pillow or anything you'd like, there are no rules. Different types and colors of pillow create different finished bloom looks! And isn't that half the fun?! Get creative and enjoy the process!!
My bloom pigments are mixed with JoWa to wet them and disperse then straight out of the can Behr 3300. This works well for me living in a desert climate and considering the struggles I've been having making blooms this summer. You can try mixing your usual way if that's still working for you. My translucent white layer is just Behr 3300 with about a blueberry sized dollop of amsterdam titanium white tube paint. That's for about 2 ounces of Behr. I needed to add water to thin so it would drizzle over the pigment layers.
My cell activator is the usual, aussie floetrol and amsterdam titanium white( plus my shimmery silver recipe I explain in the video!).
This is a longer format video because of the intricacies of the technique and the fact that I did 3 separate blooms to show how it's done. I hope you enjoy it and learn all you need to start making these too!
I purchase my glass trivets at Dollar Tree. They are so useful!

Dawn, this is super cool to see! I bet the clear glass lends itself well to those interference colors and light coming through makes them sparkle a lot! I subscribed to your channel and will be binge watching your other videos over the coming weeks. There are certain artists I follow that I wish lived closer, and you’re certainly one of them. It would be so fun to paint with you! Thanks for sharing your process. It’s so helpful to those of us starting our bloom journey.

Thank you for all of that! I so appreciate you being here and finding my content helpful🩷 there's been quite a bit of discussion about getting together a large group not in an expo type setting so more people could afford the trip. I hope that comes to fruition, I'd travel for that! It would be so much fun to meet everyone in person and play in paint together ❤️

@@vegasmainiac7745 please do count me in! I’d adore meeting like minded people (paint obsessed) lol. What a great idea though. I’m sure every single person has something to offer to a group, even if it’s just moral support.

That’s cool about the pillow, I didn’t know you could do that. These are beautiful!!! I love the look of these with the subtle color and the silver CA is really cool.

Thank you! I've experimented with various formulas for translucent/ transparent pillows for wood and glass. I've learned very quickly to only tint these pillows with transparent acrylic ink so the color doesn't interfere with the sheer effect. It's pretty cool! I'm spray painting a few canvas rounds for the next video🩷
