    Flat Bridge
    Parish: St. Catherine
While it cannot be positively ascertained when this bridge was built, it was definitely constructed after 1724. Edward Long describes it in his History of Jamaica printed in 1774: This bridge is flat and composed of planks on frame of timberwork which rests upon two piers and two buttresses projecting from the banks, constructed with piles and braces interlaced with masonry.
When this bridge was being constructed, the sixteen plantations in the Bog Walk area were obliged to send one slave in every fifty to work on the River Road, sometimes called Sixteen Mile Walk. Gravel, marl, lime, sand and stone had to be dug. Slaves often lost their lives as they performed dangerous tasks in the Gorge. Contracts for timber and for masons to work on the bridge were authorized at vestry meetings.
Between 1881 and 1915, the floor of the bridge was washed away and later re-floored with iron girders and buckle plates taken from the original flooring of the May Pen bridge. Today, the bridge of three spans is supported by two piers and two abutments. In the 1930s it had metal handrails and later wooden ones, but these were devoured by the river at different times. Semi-circular spheres are now the only protection on the bridge itself.
The Flat Bridge is one of Jamaica’s oldest bridges

I listened with interest as you described ways to improve the bridge, including raising it to higher levels. The next time you return to the bridge, please go back to the spot in which you were parked and raise your eyes to the hillside beside you. There used to be a marker, about 10-15 feet above the height of your car, indicating the highest level reached by flood waters. The power of that volume of water passing through that narrow channel, will remove any other bridge. That has been the main reason for Flat Bridge remaining in it's present form.. Built somewhere between 1724-1774, it was never meant to carry the long wheelbase vehicles that are now crossing over it. I watch with awe the skill of those truck drivers and often find myself holding my breath, as they negotiate the 90 degree bends with apparent ease. Thank you for including me in your travel experiences throughout our beautiful island and look forward to more adventures.

High rise buildings and the cell phone was not invented in the 1700’s in Jamaica but is present now.. there is no excuse for this primitive bridge to be still in use. There is so many technology, corporations and engineers in Jamaica that can solve this problem and has not today. It just doesn’t make sense!!!
Fix the problem or I will have to, then name is after myself.. lol

I was waiting for you to ask them about rumors of crocodiles being in the river at any section of it. I met a lady who was incarcerated who came to my hospital for treatment. She head me speaking with my fellow country women, and asked if it was true that Flat bridge had a stop light. You should hear how amazed she was for the confirmation. I must say, I was surprised when I saw it too. Thanks Fabian.

The Jamaican Government, should build a larger bridge to accommodate two way traffic when they replace this and other aging bridges. There can be solar powered flashing signals to encourage drivers to slow down thereby reducing accidents.

When the government replaces this bridge and any other like it, they should build it wider to accommodate two way traffic. There can also be solar powered flashing lights to encourage drivers to reduce their speed and thereby reduce potential accidents.

Thank you for this and for recognising the the indegeneous people who were enslaved by Europeans and European-Americans to built this flat bridge. I really think that there is a need for the governments to authorise all priests, bishops and pastors to perform traditional ceremonies all over the Islands to help these troubled spirits that were brutally murdered by these uncivilised slaver owners to help their spirits find a resting place. Just imagine how many were savagely mutilated by plantation owners, hung on trees alive for the vultures to feed and left in the streets as a lesson to others thinking of running away.
