Glad we made the pod!!! Luckily the incident in question happened after store hours when we were closed so nobody was hurt and it did not have anything to do with Pokémon that evolve at night ahaha. One major thing the article forgot to mention is that our store sent over 40 TCG trainers to the world championships happening this weekend in Hawaii! These troubling events do unfortunately signal a need for us to relocate, and this means Seattle might be losing the best Pokémon store in the country! Best wishes from The Village and don’t let this event stop you from coming to visit if ever in the greater Seattle area!!
Interesting take on the aesthetics, in my opinion, I'm about the same age as you guys but I never felt atracted to the game because of the horror elements, I grew up with Duel Monsters and GX and the whole appeal for me were the powerful anime heroes and beasts. Never cared about the body horror/halloween style cards, for me GX era cards especially where when my love for the game resonated the most with Elemental Heroes, after that 5Ds established more like the style we have today. I couldn't care less about early DM era horror monsters, I don't find them appealing even today and I prefer monsters more like Neo and Mystic Elf over Mystic Clown or Dark Assailant. My only exception to the rule are millenium type monsters, stuff like Relinquished was always up my alley, not because it was horror, but because it was a powerful card represented by the main antagonist and had lore roots associated with the Egyptian themes.
The thing about Shadowverse in Japan is that it actually is quite popular overall (established IP and all that) but dropped down significantly recently due to a lackluster set. Their yearly big anniversary set came out with cards that were cool but weren't exactly strong enough to compete with meta decks from the previous set, so people didn't feel compelled to buy what was meant to be their biggest set of the year. On top of that, the set after the lackluster anniversary set led to a pretty bad format due to the new cards being too good.
I lost my pyramid of light card in the cinema. Went up to the front desk to politely ask for a replacement, she assumed I was just lying and asked how many packs did I want. I just said as many as possible please and ended up with like 15 packs to go home with.
The art style discussion was fascinating especially since I kinda have the opposite take. I played Yu-Gi-Oh from DM through GX and have only just recently gotten back into it and the art has been a major pull for me. There's a level of detail in the designs and diversity of styles that imo the original sets can't hold a candle to
@@tyleranitar I think the biggest difference is Diversity vs. Identity. Both appeal to me but you can't have much of one while maintaining much of the other. I am honestly a fan of both. I loved old school where DM/GX era had so much identity. You could look at a monster and be like "Yes! That is a Yu-Gi-Oh monster!" Vs. NOW it's got something for everybody but at the expense of its OWN identity. Anime girls, cars, mechs, fire fighters, eevee, RPG style, etc.. pick your poison. And I do love the variety! ...mostly (looking at you Traptrix 🤔) lol but jokes aside, I do like that everyone can kinda find a deck to identify WITH, but with said diversity Yu-Gi-Oh loses its OWN identity. Just my 2 cents. 🤷
I got curious on the OCG prizes just to compare, and found a bit of info. 2024 YCSJ from End of April 1st place: Trophy, Stainless Steel Gandora promo, the full playset of Infinite Forbidden in all rarities. Everyone within top 64 seemed to have gotten the Gandora promo, and the top 4 were given sets of cards from Infinite Forbidden based on rarities. 2024 World Qualifiers The qualified player got a replica card of the 2023 World Championship promo.
@@apsamplifier Japan doesn't do their YCS that often. They have had 2 this year. The TCG has had A LOT more than 2. They do however have regional like events, Open Tournaments and Asia regional events. Where they get our basic prizes. Playmat, the latest box, prize sleeves, trophy. There is also Ranking Duel playmats. Does the TCG have a rank ladder for all players? Japan in general does. I hear Pokemon players talk about it. Yu-Gi-Oh wise, players get a special playmat at the end of the season based on their rank. Top 1200 get playmat A and the rest down to 1800 get playmat B. I know after Dawn of Majesty, they had a few Holographic playmats. Stardust Dragon, Shark/Nasch from Zexal (water duelist set came out), RIKKA TEARDROP QUEEN. They have pretty cool ones you should look em up.
The thing with Pendulum is that it's blamed for YGO's problems but that was happening regardless. Like, yes people saw Pendulums and left. That much is true. But there was a period when Pendulums came out where they did nothing while Shaddoll and friends sped everything up. THEN we got Qliphort and PePe that were too much. But Pendulum the mechanic should not be treated any harsher than anything else in this game. Are there crazy Pendulum cards and decks? Yes. Same with Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, Link and even freaking Rituals. The real issue is Konami making ridiculously powerful cards, not what color the card is.
Duelist Alliance ruined the game, but it wasn't beyond saving, then Links ruined the game in an irreversible manner. Pendulums being the problem has always been a meme.
I agree that powerlevel wise it's not all on pendulum, but they do facilitate powercreep as mechanic. If they are a perfectly fine mechanic there's no need to move pendulum scale zone to S/T zone, and nerfing pendulum summon with Link Arrows. The other is just sheer complexity of pendulum..... it's just unnecessary complexity for already complex game
@@PendBestDeck151pendulum is just one of several decks that do the thing that makes newbies quit and is insufferable for even veterans to play against: they special summon near infinitely and take 15 minutes to to set up a board. Doesn’t matter the mechanic “isn’t a problem” meta-wise it is still miserable to play against.
@@ducky36F You're right tho 😫 I like that things like Majespector, is a pure deck. Even Melodious. I like the overall design of newer Pendulum ( not Solfachord or Vaylantz, those are a nightmare to pilot and explain). Predaplant is also good assisting a theme without making pendulum overwhelming. Or Vaalmonica being a small engine at the MOST. The one card Pendulum gimmick like Apodrakosis and Nemleria are great. I would like for pendulum to be meta again, but as midrange or control. But that's on Konami to design good pendulum and to slow the game down

I'm terrified for media and game preservation! Disks are rotting, old consoles have ticking time bombs in them like the original Xbox clock battery, and online marketplaces can just shut down and take all the digital options with them. Even music that's on a streaming platform can be pulled off at a moment's notice. We are seriously spending money on stuff we can never truly own. I've always been able to return to the old media that I grew up on whenever I wanted to almost without exception, now that's seeming less and less likely going forward
Amazing pod episode! One thing I would say is if everyone wants yugioh to change for the better, you have to get the Japanese fans to be the ones at the forefront complaining about things. You have to understand with Japanese companies, they listen to Japanese fans WAY more than outsiders. Nintendo, SEGA, Sony, Atlus, Bandai Namco etc… it’s not a Konami problem it’s a Japanese company problem.
The "problem card(s)" will always change cos competitive players are always looking to break the game. People who arent willing to put in the work to get good will always just complain and act like if the "problem card(s)" didnt exist they could top a YCS. A few weeks back I played against a Magna X deck and the guy forfeited on me cos I just kept stalling his Magna X with Ankylomon's On Play that prevents it from attacking.
Paul and Alec I have kids myself and you where right about Internet space for kids there is none. Also my kids love the toy story movies and seen all of them so this I can say is for them for sure
Would love for this to be picked for PoG and hear Paul & Alec's thoughts. Hot take, I think the game is fine as is, comboing off with a deck feels satisfying when its done successfully and countering my opponents attempts is just part of the game. Imo the problem is that it is the only way to play officially. If GOAT, Edison, highlander or maybe pure archetype like formats where given to us in as official formats it would appeal to the various player types and bases. For Eg, rush duel, people like rush because its a fast, simple and straight forward way to play. Banning cards only works for a short time, and meta's will exist in any format, eg GOAT/ Edison.
I'm surprised that we are getting a YCS before the Banned List, that they have told us will happen this month, unless they're gonna drop it on the day of again. It's curious.
I played Weiss from 2013-2016 and it was a great game. I’m sad locals in the Ohio area near me fizzled out. I hope the game makes a resurgence in my area. Unfortunately I think OPTCG will stifle that.
Alec an I started watching that anime at a similar time for similar reasons and i was so surprised to hear it mentioned lol. I thought it was just goofy and I'd put it on, but it really was actually interesting.

For the one piece part I get that the author said it’s cool to change it up but it’s annoying cuz we don’t want to know what the show runners want to do I hate when people take the ip and instead of faithfully telling it tell their own story just make your own thing we are interested in the story we know not what you wanna make

Paul just cause a game does well or did well in japan does not mean it would do well here. Let me give you a good example. Years ago when duel masters game out, the game and anime didn't do well to the point where it got canceled all together. OK years late the reboot comes out and for whatever reason the game and the anime do poorly agin. We didn't have amount of games that we have today so why did the game fail so bad here and beyond survives there?

He pr9bably said that cause that's what the studio is gonna do.. even though the first seasons was 1 for 1.. 😒 when they change shit it fails.. especially anime!
