While I do think players should at least be fairly compensated for topping at events, Chris and Paul are right that nothing will change because the player base doesn’t care to make it change. When Konami sees players showing up even when prize support is trash, decks are becoming more and more overpowered, and sets are still being purchased why fix anything on their end.
Personally once the tins drop, I’m gonna take a break from buying new cards and focus on Lorcana and Magic not because I don’t enjoy playing Yu-Gi-Oh anymore but I’m looking for a more back and forth experience which the current card design doesn’t support as much outside of playing with friends or having a good match up by sheer luck.

I’ve tried plenty of mtg and digimon and while I enjoy both games they aren’t yugioh so I just dont have the passion for them. Where are these expectations of prizes coming from though? the game has always been a casual card collector, there’s no one in yugioh who has made any amount of money in total in tournaments that would be enough to live on. If you look at other games, and even other tcg they have precedents of high cash payouts, but yugioh hasn’t at any point. These events are just for fun, and not for sweats to make a living. Looking at these people expecting big payouts when you can look at the event pages still and see what they are promised beforehand. These are false expectations players are putting on themselves. there’s no reason for Konami to cater to these people when they aren’t even the people who they make money off of (buying singles for decks). They make money off the casual players who buy several boxes just for the fun of cracking packs, which from all nearby players I’ve seen seems like the majority

I'll go ahead and drop the unpopular take. Konami never promised money or value for tournaments. Konami provides tournaments so people that want to get together and prove their skill with the hobby can do so. Complaining about Konami not offering better prizing would be like me going to a laser tag place regularly, getting incredibly good at laser tag, and then being mad the laser tag place won't pay me for my skill. Hobbies are hobbies, not jobs. If you aren't having fun or if the hobby is costing you more than you are comfortable with, you should step away and find something else that makes you happier/fits in your budget.

How you treat your 'top best customers' is how you treat all your customers basically. Also multiple seasons on the TV Show literally center around tournaments, The idea that you could enter one in real life and be treated like this? And they're a million dollar company.. If it's only about proving who is the best then it shouldn't cost anything to enter. If I am paying an entrance fee for an event there is an expectation that doing well would have some sort of return. This isn't a Konami thing it's a universal thing. If I told you about a Poker tournament that had a $50 entrance fee you would naturally ask me what the prize for first is. Konami is the only TCG throwing big tournaments like this and not offering $$$ as a prize. There is an industry standard and they are the only ones who aren't even attempting to meet it.

I legit just downloaded Master Duel the other week. Made my first yugioh deck on there. Played my first game on there. And now I’m sleeving up my first paper deck go get ready to bring to locals.
I understand metas in games. I have done a ton of research on the current meta of THIS game. I understand that fiendsmith/snake eyes is a little too good. I understand that the prize support isn’t as great as other games, but I feel like it’s unfair to say that matters that much to anyone other than top players. I’m excited about the game. I’m climbing the ladder with my Galaxy Eyes deck on MD. I’m excited to bring it to locals even though it’s not meta. And I’m not expecting to win. What the people at the top are complaining about literally only applies to winners. Thousands of players attend regionals….. and only 8 of them are too 8. Less than 1% of people get prize support. And let’s be honest, less than 1% of people are EXPECTING to get prize support. They know they aren’t getting anything. From what I see attendance is up as well, meaning that new people ARE interested. The hype IS there. I saw so many videos about the EU tournament. I was excited about it. As someone who is on the complete other side of her argument…. I really just don’t see their argument. Can prize support be BETTER? Sure. Can some cards get banned? Sure (and it’s coming). But is it really KILLING new players interest in the game? I don’t think so. If anything, the fact that new people are winning in the EU just shows that.

Just started playing again and I see it the exact same way. It’s for the fun and experience not with the only goal of getting some prize. The game is a lot easier to learn than people make it sound so it’s hard to imagine what a “top” player really does other than playing the meta supported archetype.

@@ozmcsween I know for a fact that someone who is considered a top player is 10000% better than me. Even in games like hearthstone which are much more simple has a gulf between good players and bad players. But the argument of “prize support” really only applies for people who win. Winners wanting to win more basically. SHOULD there be better prize support with unique card arts and stuff? Sure that would be sick, but would that REALLY make new players join the game? I don’t think so. The only crowd that would win over are people who know they can win.

For what it's worth, in the OCG, especially in Japan, giving out a cash price for something can be considered a form of gambling. So, in a case like that, it would restrict the number of people that could not only enter but may also be considered illegal, considering how Japan treats gambling for some things.

Tbh the problem that the franchise is facing is the pricing and the powercreep. Casuals players, dont care about pro's quitting and I think content creators from EU and USA are focusing more in get you to think that prize support is a problem, when, in fact, the vast majority of people plying this game are casuals, and casuals don't neccesary play table 500 decks, they might play a meta deck, but since they have other responsibilities they might dont do as well as people who have more time to spend in ygo. The game is just too far unbalanced to be playable as someone whos played for 2 years. Sensible adults cant buy meta decks every single year for prices like $1000. Especially if there isnt any real incentive to play the game. Kids dont even play the game anymore. They have one type of customer who only likes the game because of nostalgia but money is an actual concern to them. Make every deck more playable instead of releasing trash new strategies and clogging up sets with 90% bulk. Give support to every deck like pokemon and sales will go up and more people will be happy. its only "Pro" players that care about tier 0 formats and those people dont buy boxes and make the game horrible for everyone else. Sooner or later it will only be pro players at events because noone will enjoy the game other that those that get something meaningful out of winning. i think the real issue here is like you guys said: "pro" play is created by community interest. If Konami believe that it is useful marketing tool to promote pro play, they would support it, but the reality is its not. (Look at basically every card game's attempt to push a pro scene crash and burn, like Mtg or Hearthstone for example). Sports generate money through selling tickets, sponsorship etc. But Yu-Gi-Oh isnt really a spectator sport. sure, enfranchised players may follow tournament results, but realistically who is going to pay to see a YGO tournament? the pro scene generates basically no money, and until it does, or until konami believes in its potential to market the game, it wont go out of its way to support it. I know it sucks but the reality is you don't have a right to make money or profit from something just because you're good at it. you need to be generating some value for whoever is paying you, which unfortunately this doesn't (or not enough).

How far should the prize line be stretched? Should Konami give a prize to the top 100 players? Or just stop strictly at top 8? I think this is the part that I don't agree with. Despite Konami not giving top 8 a prize I don't think it warranted a video of that magnitude. She was sort of calling Konami out. I think like most people, she is frustrated with the state of the game this was the last straw that broke the camel's back. I don't think it was about her not getting anything for top 8. We've known for decades now that Yu-Gi-Oh! will never be the "win money" game, but it seems like when YCS first started they used to have better, competitive promo cards as prizes but they slowly moved away that over the years. It's a fine line in Yu-Gi-Oh! because people don't want the best cards locked behind prize support and simply putting out an alternate art is difficult because that's nothing new to this game, either, and really given meta changes and collector mentality that determines the secondary market the whole "win promo, sell for money" tactic only can go so far. I think it's a difference of what is a 25 year old game versus these other games that are only a year or more old and have a "new hotness" feel. One Piece is hot right now, very popular, but how are things going to be in say five years when they're putting out another alt art Luffy card? Will it still see as much return? Same with Lorcana, there's demand now, but we're going to have to wait and see what happens next.

01:10:26 if Yu-Gi-Oh came out today, I think magic and Pokémon would have a little too big of a stranglehold and other Card games would beat it up in popularity however I do think it’s also worth considering since I admittedly am more of an anime guy
in this hypothetical world would Yu-Gi-Oh! be perceived as a Shonen Jump anime or a card game to sell stuff Anime ?
Because half of the Yu-Gi-Oh community is basically just nostalgia people not exclusively for the card game, but for the anime and manga as well and joy for the Dark Magician isn’t just because it’s a sort of strange archetype that likes spell counters and a weird unworldly level seven guy but because it’s used by a little relatable, guy who’s brave and may not be good at fighting, but certainly knows his way around the local game corner who uses his extensive awkward nerd knowledge to do the right thing.
And not to mention, Yu-Gi-Oh! is adjacent to dragon ball and one piece of Naruto and Yugi is invited generally to the Shonen Jump cook out
I don’t know if that’s true of Vrains or Sevens but… in the world where it comes out and it is held up alongside modern jump series, I think Yugioh might stand a chance

I would of assume it was the price of a yugioh event like 20 max. I guess that is how pokemon can give out much better prize support.

When will Konami pull the plug and reboot the game? Other games do it with set rotations, I’d love some of the newer anime based decks like shining sarc’ or exodia, maybe rain in yubel a bit, to have a chance, because they’re descent but not super broken. Maybe it would be easier to make a list of cards that aren’t banned, limiting the pool. Or we just begin again and focus more on vanillas and learn from the mistakes of the past and prevent such broken formats.

1:09:25 here’s the thing about when we were kids, we didn’t play properly we played the way we saw in the anime!
So if it was released with the power level of today it wouldn’t matter because we’d still play the way we saw in the anime.
So yes 100% would still play. I didn’t play no goat format when I was a kid and I wouldn’t be playing no fiendsmith snake eye format either.

TeamAPS alumni in the building 🏆
Listen; one of the biggest elephants in the room is the fact based off of Chris's comment, "She uses the same deck, consistently"
A simple rule over ratio is bound to surface, eventually
If you run 60; you should be able to win using 60 DIFFERENT cards, all relative to your strategy
    If you run 50 .....
If you are running 40, you've got it in the bag 💯
NO DUPLICATEs or TRIPLICATEs of any card in any deck!!
Unless THEEE FUSION monster(s) require multiple copies, there is NO REASON duelists cannot balance consistency using the entire, vast, massive card pool
Synchro summoning does not require multiple copies of anything
XYZ summoning does not require multiple copies of anything
Link summoning does not require multiple copies of anything
Call it what you want; slow & gimmicky, too ANIME-based (BRUH, IT'S ANIME!!!!) ... you CANNOT complain about originality & authenticity when you literally jam the same cycle of complete game demoralizing, hand checking, cock blocking, cotton picking annoyances into the new hottest archetype to CHEAT out your next "turbo" win 💯 Facts; you're not a champion, you're a loophole. Not authentic 🙏🏾
It's funny that everything that isn't in the META is simply considered "anti-META", or a "gimmick"; when every single archetype begs to have lore in Yu-Gi-Oh 🤦🏾‍♂️ All these archetypes have been treasured because of their authenticity!!!
Run your META section the way you like; make a balanced sector of Yu-Gi-Oh for the ones who big brain REAL strategy, instead of facing the same phony ass META drones 🙏🏾
Like, how the hell do we expect new duelists to wanna stay in the game learning with an everlasting handicap?? They're forced to pick up momentum at light speed, or graduate themselves up a ladder they will literally never see the end of. It has always been the THRILL of the game that captivated us. We owe it to all duelists to develop in all aspects
How exactly is a Link-1 Blue-Eyes dragon supposed to help a duelist who has no idea what Ash Blossom is?
New ass whuppin on my page!!!! Good luck duelists

Top prizes should just be 1 of a kind Alternate Art anime adjacent cards, or set of 9, whatever or however you want to split it between top 8. Example: Dark Magician, BEWD, REBD, Utopia, Odd-Eyes, Code Talkers etc. Theres so many to choose from. Theyd have their $ worth, collectiblity AND is playable if the person was brave enough to pull up to locals with their YCS champ BEWD Artwork. Doesn't even have to be the main protag cards, rivals, signature spells, etc. Its literally that easy. Top 8 losing a booster box though for a switch is crazy 😂 (this comment is super late to the video)

Also that idea that Konami never wanted pro players is a load of crap. The fact that there is a world championship since 2004 says a lot so you can put that take in the trash cuz that's not at all true not to mention there is now a world's grind in the Yu-Gi-Oh master duel client that has you grind for 72 hours straight and you can only go to the world championship if you are the number one player in your region so stop that.

I just wanna say, at least with Pokémon, tournament entries at regional and up might be more expensive but a top meta deck will only run you around $100 if you don't feel the need to bling it out with full art variants and what not and that's not even most meta decks either. Compared to Yugioh where any meta deck will run you $100's to $1000+. I will gladly take paying $50 more to enter a regional with that in mind.

Josh Schmidt (and Jesse Kotten to a lesser extent) debunked most of the things Jess said in her video. Jessica got to go to Japan, expenses mostly paid, got a 'goodie' bag worth like 2-4k (as Josh explained). She did not go empty handed. Yes, the general prize support could be better, that much no one is debating.. but she was a little too much woe is me and exaggerating a LOT, acting like people were leaving in mass and such. All she accomplished was causing a lot of drama.

    • @TheLastSane1

Giving bags worth 2-4K to a handful of people doesn't fix the system. If it costs 300$ or more to build a deck, people can't afford that cost without anything to show for it but a good time. Thats the business plan for hookers btw. The cost of the game needs to go down by a fucking lot. 1000$ to build a top rated deck, thats more than some people make in 2 weeks of work, hell at my old job I made 1200 a month. Thats damn near a whole months pay on fucking cardboard. With no way to really get anything out of those cards.

The reasons I'm not having fun is to much to count and I really don't want to elaborate because quite a bit of it is the same reasons for others leaving, I'm not competing at the highest levels so prizing doesn't factor in I'll say that much.

What makes this even sadder is the 2 siblings that did got a structure deck (1 for both of them). Then they got immediately destroyed in their local card shop. According to my friend they haven't really gone back since.
So it's extremely unlikely for the average kid these days to ever pick Yu-Gi-Oh out of every other hobby or game in the market these days

Could have a special pack that top cut gets that has 3 random anime characters as starlights with 20 different characters cards to pull from, similar to the ots packs but just for the ycs. DM 1, DM 2, DM 3, GX 1, GX 2 GX 3 etc maybe 5D 1 could contain everyone's king as a startlight for jacks card. Collectors would go nuts trying to collect them all. You open your DM 1 pack and you pull "the true pharaoh" "the ruler of dragons" and "the dancer of dreams" you will know you have hit it big. Maybe people could even create a human deck for fun.

  • @treize731

I'm about 30 minutes in and maybe ya'll discuss this later but burning questions and comments and all that jazz. So I think the reason Yugioh (as a casual collector since 2002) on the competitive level over the past 5-10 years has that proverbial lens on it is for sure because of other card game competition. However, the other big thing is cost. Yugioh is very MTG like with product production year over year with cards not holding a ton of value - outside of staples that ramp up deck costs. For competitive players - that's tough, especially with inflation impacting all of us. I think that has been more impactful to the conversation than the super success of One Piece where participation prizing is valuable simply because it's SO hard to get into those events because of demand. So if you're going to have to drop $500 - $1000 on a competitive YUGIOH deck - travel & play (as a hobby!) the potential for rewards should be relatively significant - especially as one of the big 3.

40:00 The issue is that Yugioh players have been accepting an abusive format management structure since the very beginning, ever since Konami discovered they could use the banlist as a way to change the format. That's not what a banlist is for. Banlists are supposed to be used sparingly to remove problem cards which slip through design and testing and are breaking the format. But Konami use it to arbitrarily stop players from using the best decks so that they have to buy the next best decks. Players will spend hundreds of dollars on a deck only for it to be banned months later and why? It likely wasn't tier 0, but there are new competitive decks that need to be sold. Yugioh players have just been conditioned to accept that this is the way a game is supposed to work

    • @MTGDuelist8870
      @MTGDuelist8870 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

the abusive format management structure of the game is one problem in a much larger machine of problems with the game (although that is a large factoring part of it as well), Yu-Gi-Oh as a game is doomed to be what it is now forever more because the game is designed horribly and that's coming from someone who played since 2001 until Albaz. because there's no resources or limitations on what you can do and because everything made has to get stronger then what came before in order for people to buy the cards, if you have it in hand, you can play it. and because everything has to do more and more and more, it leads to what we have now, where 2 players fight eachother in 1 singular turn to decide who wins. one card combo's for player 1 (first turn) and hand traps for player 2 (second turn) and if player 2 can survive till their turn, they win. Sprites, Kashtira, Tearlaments, Ishizu, snake-eyes, fiendsmith, Yubel they are all examples of what the game inevitably boils down too when you reach the apex of the problems. and even then, the apex just gets higher because it has too for cards to sell. but if you suggest fixing the game, if you suggest even attempting to fix the design issues with Yu-Gi-Oh, Yu-Gi-Oh players will reject them without question because "this is how it's always been, it would be stupid to try and change it".

@@MTGDuelist8870 Well yeah, all that is true about the power creep but I was just responding to what Paul said at 40:00 about players forgetting their frustrations every time a new ban list is revealed. They see the ban list as a positive thing but to me looking in from the outside, the ban list is mainly used to remove from the meta those tier 1 decks which are still viable but are not being sold anymore in the current set. Occasionally it happens that the ban list serves its original purpose to hit a tier 0 deck like Tearlaments but the results are always the same. The ban list shouldn’t be the main mechanism driving format change in a game. It makes the game uncertain and expensive
