I had almost the exact the experience back in November. Forecast called for OVC010 in the morning improving to SCT040 by late afternoon but what happened was pretty much the opposite. On departure in the morning it was clear below 12k and all the way my destination for the most part but by late afternoon I checked the Wx to return and it was OVC012 at home field. By the time I was starting my approach the AWOS was advertising OVC008 but I didn't break out till 600' AGL (200' above minimums). That's why I always keep current and proficient ;-)
Great video Josh. You covered it very professionally. I am working on IFR and appreciate your hard work to get where you are as an awesome pilot and a credit to Aviation. Thank you!
Great video Josh as always. Very informative. Appreciate the explanations for your actions and equipment. As you have shown weather can change and we need to be ready for that.
Enjoyed this video. I used to fly out of Addison so enjoyed "going back there". Also, I could see the building of a company I used to work for on the west side of the airport property, so that brought back good memories.
Hi, Josh! I've been a longtime fan of your videos. This was so beautifully done. Your narration and editing were top notch, and your decision making / situational awareness throughout the flight was great. Keep up the great work and happy flying!
as always thank you i have learned so much from your videos i got my license a year ago and i passed my check ride thanks to some help from you and people like you the fling community are some of the most helpful people out there THANKS
Another great video ........ I'm a private pilot with just over 300 hours and I just want to say thank you so much . Your videos have absolutely inspired me and they are helping me become a better pilot. I'm getting much better with close traffic awareness and communication. I fly out of a non-towered FBO and don't talk with any ATC much.... So once again I thank you and please keep up the outstanding work. I myself was also born and raised in central Texas (Copperas Cove) but now I live in eastern Iowa. --Jesse P
Josh, just found your channel the other day. I am very impressed with the quality of your aviation videos. My SEL was completed back in 1989 at Dawn Aero based in Delaware. After moving to Florida I did a little flying out of Fort Myers. You live my dream of having access to your own aircraft for training and fun flights. Sadly, I never had the means to get my instrument rating. Thanks, again for the detailed flights in IFR and VFR conditions. If nothing else I am learning more about instrument flying and all the changes in avionics that are taking place. Hope you become a professional pilot, you have all of the attributes. BTW...loved those videos of you and Dad flying.
Dream on by Aerosmith was our class song (I graduated in 1977, 2 years after I got my PPL). Hearing that song made me smile ... memories. Great video as usual, Josh!
When my daughter got her Private, her next step was Instrument ticket. I had a friend of mine who owns a Citabria (sp) to teach her basic aerobatics. Mainly to learn upsets and recoveries. She said her instrument ticket saved her ass on more than one occasion. You are right Josh. Best thing you could ever do as a private pilot.
Good stuff Josh. Halfway through my helicopter IFR ticket and it bums me out that Robinsons can't legally go IMC. Seriously considering getting the fixed wing add-on to log some actual.
Though I am not a pilot, I enjoy your video's immensely. I have learned so much! Thank you for taking the time to do these video's for all of us who must enjoy flying through someone else's eyes.
Thank you very much johs Thank you for all this detailed quality information. Very nice shots the clouds, landing by weather a little covered Great quality of your videos.
This was great Josh..such an informative. And also exciting mini journey..it is so true that the IFR rating opens up a whole different world ..I need to get that rating.. Hope its not too late as I'm 54 and broke
Hi Josh. Just wanted to thank you for the great content. Your videos have inspired me so much that I started ground school last month, and can't wait to take my first flight lesson very soon.
Good video with accurate, useful explanations of the ATC system.May I suggest - Waco Approach doesn't need to know (and doesn't care) why you want to file IFR. How about, "Skyhawk 80991 requests IFR clearance, present position direct San Marcos." Controllers have told me that unless a request is a complicated one, state what you want on first call.
They can decline to grant the clearance, you know. They deal with a lot of pilots who pick up IFR on the fly because they're lazy and don't want to do the work themselves on the ground. Josh was gently underscoring the need for the IFR and preemptively countering any faulty assumptions the ATC might make. It also served as a subtle apology for making the ATC do the filing. Were I PIC, I'd only omit the side detail, which only added maybe a whole second to the radio call, if the controller was clearly very busy and brevity was needed. But even then, that might be the time when that extra little nudge just might be most needed.
At least an Archer, not a Cessna! ATC sometimes warns about similar callsigns under their control, so as to avoid confusion due to mistakenly taking an instruction by the wrong aircraft.
I drove through your area the other day coming back from south Texas. We saw a plane flying above Austin hauling an ad sign. Thought it could be you. Lol
Looking forward to starting the IFR training. Those clouds are so beautiful from that perspective! At the moment, I only have about 80 hours, but I've set a minimum of 100 hrs VFR for myself to even start thinking about the IFR training.
I believe you may have done it before but I'm not sure. I'd love to see a video dedicated to explaining how you record the intercom and radio audio, and also how you play music from your iPad and get it ran through the aircraft audio system.
You do not have to be a multi to get your CFI. In fact allot of CFI's don't have their multi until later. They get their single engine commercial, then their CFI, maybe a CFII, then work on multi work.
This video is a real gem with all its ATC and IFR info. Is the Stratus 2S and ForeFlight combination reliable enough, and does it update fast enough, in order to make it unnecessary for your Cessna to have its own weather radar? Will the Stratus/ForeFlight help you avoid all those "red" areas I see on other general aviation videos?
Very cool josh I remember when I met you at Oshkosh airventue 2015 and took a picture in front of your airplane I'm now a student pilot going to solo next week I fly a Cessna 172N do you have any tips?
Wow Josh just counting views PST west cost the numbers speak louder than words 6512 @10:45 pm 6 11 17, Yea U be the leader for the others no doubt, seems funny to watch them make there version enough said, still want to come to San Marcos to meet you hope to make it before the end of summer I have a cousin just a bit N NW of you in Llano on state hwy 29 about 85 miles. Anyone putting a thumbs down ,well we'll just let them think what they want .How many of them a real pilots ?
Awesome video, Josh, as always. Question - did you arrange flight following on ground at Addison before departing? What did you request? I listen to Addison ATC frequently and have found the requests for flight following to be pot luck recently.
Since he was simply granted the clearance without being given a squawk code to enter, I'm guessing that he did get it beforehand. You can't get it on the ground though, iirc, you have to make the request in the air, because it depends on atc workload at that moment, which can be unpredictable.
I'm not finished with the video yet but I didn't want to miss commenting on the lack of a squawk code when you got your clearance. Did I miss something?
Because of you I love aviation, because of my friends I love guns. I can only dream of being a fighter pilot ( I plan on joining the CAP - civilian air patrol and taking flying lessons. My only goal in life is to be a fighter pilot- coming from a highly ambitious 13yr old in the middle of Ohio
If the AWOS was out of date, I wonder if the altimeter setting was correct? If it's providing wrong data, there's no reason to trust that the altimeter setting is any more accurate than the ceiling and visibility report. Sobering to think that you could have been at or even beneath minimums if the altimeter was out by even a couple of tenths of an inch!
Cool vid, great explanation on how the Stratus 2S and ForeFlight work together. Awesome combination for any pilot to have onboard.
+steveo1kinevo thanks Steve! And absolutely. Makes IFR loads safer in my opinion.
I've said this before, but you got some of the best videos to learn from. This video alone had great information to remember. Thank you...
Love the music selection upon entering the clouds. Sights look fantastic.

Thanks Josh great stuff.
love the part with "dream on" in background and airplane getting straight into the cloud - it fits so perfect.... !!!! :D
Great video Josh. You covered it very professionally. I am working on IFR and appreciate your hard work to get where you are as an awesome pilot and a credit to Aviation. Thank you!
Fantastic Josh. You are a wonderful instructor. You have/can make a difference!
Great video Josh as always. Very informative. Appreciate the explanations for your actions and equipment. As you have shown weather can change and we need to be ready for that.
Dream On...excellent choice
Well done...awesome job with the graphics. Your making flying IFR Great Again, Bigly.
Enjoyed this video. I used to fly out of Addison so enjoyed "going back there". Also, I could see the building of a company I used to work for on the west side of the airport property, so that brought back good memories.

I love the first song you put in... It matched perfectly... XD
as always thank you i have learned so much from your videos i got my license a year ago and i passed my check ride thanks to some help from you and people like you the fling community are some of the most helpful people out there THANKS

Excellent stuff. Amen to preparedness.
Great vid. I fly out of KSSF. Just finishing my PPL. Hoping to continue my training toward my IFR. I been enjoying all of your vids. Thx
I love music - can't imagine how it must feel to listen while flying!
Dream on by Aerosmith was our class song (I graduated in 1977, 2 years after I got my PPL). Hearing that song made me smile ... memories.
Great video as usual, Josh!
ur my favorite pilot to watch on here. mravation101 keep up the good work

why not?
I didn't know that.....interesting.
One of my favorite channels! Thank you, Josh.
Great video as always. Thanks for the description and explanation at the end! Very informative.
As always a great video and great reminders for every pilot. Keep up the great videos.
Great music!

I liked the audio notes you added here, we learn a lot from you
Excellent airmanship as usual Josh, I really enjoy your videos!!
quite liked the flying through cloud shots great stuff josh nice one!!!
Thank you very much johs
Thank you for all this detailed quality information.
Very nice shots the clouds, landing by weather a little covered
Great quality of your videos.
Awesome Production! I love your videos!

Hope its not too late as I'm 54 and broke
Nice video well done I'm assuming if you missed approach have to find a different airport hope have enough fuel to get there?
blastman8888 precisely. I had enough fuel to almost make it back to Dallas!
Hi Josh. Just wanted to thank you for the great content. Your videos have inspired me so much that I started ground school last month, and can't wait to take my first flight lesson very soon.
Thanks Josh! Another great video!
Love the enroute soundtrack!

Russell Thorstenberg that's true! That was unnecessary info!
Think he's just used to explaining what he's doing
They can decline to grant the clearance, you know. They deal with a lot of pilots who pick up IFR on the fly because they're lazy and don't want to do the work themselves on the ground. Hah, a fellow Stirlingite!! Lindsey rocks! too bad the planes I fly don't have a music input :/
great message
Another great video. I just bought the Wasabi Power extended battery for my GoPro Hero 3, which lasts at least twice as long.
Excellent technical good explanations
Great video! As always thanks for sharing.
As always excellet video! I'm always looking forward to it. Your videos make me want to document me flight training!
991A, huh. Pretty similar :P
At least an Archer, not a Cessna!

Great job Josh! You look like a good pilot ;)
Greetings from Italy ✈
A fellow stirlingite here! Nice!
Excellent video
Great stuff as always!
Very cool. Thanks for this video.
great video... keep them coming!
Very nice video; thank you
Looking forward to starting the IFR training. Those clouds are so beautiful from that perspective! At the moment, I only have about 80 hours, but I've set a minimum of 100 hrs VFR for myself to even start thinking about the IFR training.
YOURE A LINDSEY STIRLING FAN?! OMG
dude the inside of your plane looks like my old saab and i think they made planes before cars. makes sense now. crazy!
I believe you may have done it before but I'm not sure. I'd love to see a video dedicated to explaining how you record the intercom and radio audio, and also how you play music from your iPad and get it ran through the aircraft audio system.
Love it! Awesome video
Thank you
Great video Josh, too bad about the GoPro's batteries, you might consider getting a power bank for those situations. Keep'em coming!
Very nice video. Too sad that the GoPro's batteries did not last.
Awesome Video!
Great like always!
Excellent job on getting your VFR and IFR ratings, but do you have your multi-engine or your commercial ratings yet?
he is a cfi so yes he has commercial multi...he has some cool videos during his training in multi-engine aircraft
You do not have to be a multi to get your CFI. In fact allot of CFI's don't have their multi until later. They get their single engine commercial, then their CFI, maybe a CFII, then work on multi work.
Absolutely! Expect the unexpected, no matter how familiar the approach. Complacency kills.
Reminds me of the PPL Written - Addison Airport 👍🏻
That was a fantastic, informative video. Did you forget your prop filter LOL?
Excellent; high quality! Do u need an internet connection in flite so that the stratus can communicate with the ipad using foreflite?
Thanks guy
informative video man! just some interesting tips.

I know right! Lindsey Stirling such a good artist!!
Very cool josh I remember when I met you at Oshkosh airventue 2015 and took a picture in front of your airplane I'm now a student pilot going to solo next week I fly a Cessna 172N do you have any tips?
Did you record this last saturday? I was out flying from Addison as well!
Man I can't wait to get my IR. Gotta put a GPS in my 172 first though. Debating between the 430W or the 650.
ShadowAviator I have a 430 in mine. works like a charm.
My only worry is how long the 430W will have support. I plan to have this plane for a fairly long time.
That is something to consider, however are you sure it's worth paying $3000+ more for?
Idk, it may save money in the long run. But that may be far enough off to not matter. Oh well, i dont have the money for either right now, lol.
What kind of Ipad mini yoke mount do you use? I am a big fan of your videos btw lol
Finally new video
You flew over my school!
I'm not finished with the video yet but I didn't want to miss commenting on the lack of a squawk code when you got your clearance. Did I miss something?
Great video. Greetings from Chile!
Nice vid
Ever thought about adding an autopilot Josh?
Which device gave you the audio alert "TFR Ahead"? Great video.
Did you add some more glass to the bottom left of the panel?
Are you coming to Oshkosh this year
Because of you I love aviation, because of my friends I love guns. I can only dream of being a fighter pilot ( I plan on joining the CAP - civilian air patrol and taking flying lessons. My only goal in life is to be a fighter pilot- coming from a highly ambitious 13yr old in the middle of Ohio
Hell ya new video!
Dream on, Dream On, Dream of an easy IFR approach!
Whats the song at 6:30?

Hey Josh, Im torn between the Zulu 3's and a20's. I just want good anr and be able to play music... what would you suggest?
