A couple of years ago it was time to replace my wife’s 18 year old Camry, so naturally we went to Toyota. The AWD Camry doesn’t have the ground clearance to navigate through our 5-7 feet of snow every winter. We looked at the RAV Hybrid AWD but comparing it to my 11 RAV Limited 4WD 3.5L V6, the current RAV was horrible. The visibility out of the rear was terrible. The fit and finish were subpar and engine noise was pronounced. We both really liked the Venza, but it had the same poor rear visibility and the interior was either 1990 Gloomy Grey or Death Black. 🤮. Ultimately we chose a new Outback. Yes we know that the Outback will Not last as long as a Toyota, but the outward view is top notch. The safety is also a Top Safety pick. Yes the CVT makes it sluggish but so far with 35K miles it hasn’t had any issues. During the winter months we’d park her Camry, she’d drive my RAV and I’d drive our 4WD pickup. Since buying her Outback, I’ve sold my RAV and our 13 year old pickup and bought a new 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road, double cab, long bed with the Premium and Technology pkgs. We plan on me driving my 23 TRD until I die. I’m quite sure that my wife will still be using my Tacoma to plow the snow off of our private road and driveway until she can no longer drive or she too dies.
So many people buy the auto they think will look good on them without any research... too bad they do not know about or watch videos like this to, at least, get a more informed idea about the marketplace before making a huge mistake on their purchase... good job on informing those interested in not making those mistakes.
Enjoy your videos. I have to say that I am dismayed at what I am hearing about Kia these days. I am still driving my 2015 Kia Sorrento V6 at 145,000. The engine is fantastic. Fuel economy is still good for an SUV. Body is still in great shape. Just replaced the usual wear and tear type stuff like brakes, ball joints, sway bars, etc. I considered getting a new model but all the engine options (which don't compare to the V6) and new issues have me thinking I will just stick with my car until she dies. Also, my husband's 2014 Forte (80,000 km) is also still driving like brand new. It feels like things are in flux while companies try to figure out new reliable technology that moves away from higher gas consumption. I was told outright by a dealership recently that you either get fuel efficiency or performance but not both. Things will hopefully improve over time.
@@s-man3684 I have thought about a Rav4 hybrid assembled in Japan and may end up going with that. However, Toyota sold me a Camry in 2009 with defective piston rings and never made good on it. That combined with Toyota recently getting caught falsifying test results have seriously damaged any trust or confidence I had in Toyota products.
Their direct injection engines will be clogged with carbon at 40k miles, which is another headache and maintenance expense. It's the sole reason why I would rather buy a RAV4 over any of the Mazda SUVs.
When I worked for a Japanese car company the dealer price was as you said but dealers also go another amount of money based on how many vehicles they sold.
Question for a future Q&A, and apologies for being late to the game: Is there a best time to buy a new car in this "post-shortage" era? In the past, end-of-model-year and sales quota deadlines (winter, end of month etc) likely played a role. I'm in no rush myself, and will be looking at a "worst case" , a new small Japanese hybrid SUV (CR-V, RAV, NX). Thanks!! I really enjoy your topics and presentation.
As an q5 owner, it is not a “great “ or super nice car, its below average in the luxury segment. Repairs are ridiculously expensive. Nothing major has broken but to give you an example, to replace something simple as suspension bushings, the dealer quoted me $8k. Give me a break.

Both the 5.3L and 6.2L are about the same quality wise, but I would get the 6.2L for the extra power. They can have lifter failure, so change the oil every 5k miles. A GM powertrain extended warranty is a good idea if you get a good price for it.
Shari, TH-cam video after video are saying cars are not selling. Their reasons are mostly because of price. Has vehicles become so expensive they are not selling? Are some vehicles way overpriced?

My question for next Q&A is how come there are so much government enforcement with CAFE. Why are government sticking their hands on car manufacturers. Can we not shrink the government so less enforcement on manufacturers 😂
Yikes do I want to open this can of worms? haha. We know CAFE is about reducing emissions to hit targets to reduce pollution and help the environment. In some ways though, we do need government intervention. For example, many car dealers are constantly price gouging consumers, taking advantage of them, and sometimes do it by even breaking the law. I see it happen daily. Here is where we need regulators to step up and hold these dealers accountable. Too many dealers are running wild and enough is enough. We also need them along with law enforcement to tackle the car theft problem, but that's a whole different can of worms.
actually overall even the bad companies like kia and hyundai the number of recalls compared to those with no recalls in very small. The internet only blows up with recalls you hear nothing about those poeple that are satisfied because that doesn't attract eyeballs or clicks.
It’s The turbos which is causing the issues. Turbos are not known for their reliability. The non turbos ( including the hybrids ) are really reliable and no major problems. I do think Toyota can make the turbos reliable long term. Only time will tell

Toyota started German complication in their products, now dealing with German reliability. The only way, Toyota kept their relative reliability, because of the old-school technology and updating their products almost after everyone else.
Anyone interested in used Honda CRV from 2017 to 2019 you should know that trim LX has 2.4 none turbo engine which used by Honda for more than 20 years.
Great information. In reference to Hyundai/Kia, we have used Hyundai Tucsons as fleet vehicles for our regional Members since around 2012. They are very well maintained and lots of highway miles. We have had numerous ones with the non-turbo 4-cylinder have their engines replace. Several of them between 95-99k miles. We had horrible experience with the 1.6L turbo engines couple with the Dual Clutch Automatics. Those DCT transmissions were horrible. Unreliable, drivability issues, etc. But the biggest issues have been niggling electrical/electronic issues. Numerous ones have headlight bulbs that go out almost monthly. Cruise control and other buttons in the interior not-functioning, or functioning intermittently. Glitches like the driver's door window buttons will lower the other three windows but not raise them. I really question the reliability of their wiring/electronics/relays. I would not own them out of warranty. In reference to diesels, I agree with you wholeheartedly. We have light-duty and heavy-duty trucks as well in our expanded fleets. 90% are diesel and the cost for maintenance is astronomical. The DEF systems (the urea fluid that is sprayed on to exhaust) is very problematic, difficult to diagnose, and expense to fix. We've had major problems, especially with the Dodge/Ram 3500 diesels, especially injectors and the fuel injection systems. Definitely stick with older diesels, if you must have one for towing, etc. And if you live in a state where that is possible, remove the DEF system and you'll be much happier.

Wife has 11th Gen. 2022 Honda Civic Touring it's a 1.5L Earths Dream i-4 Turbo since Fall 2022 and as of June 2024 has 6,300 miles. We live in the Northeast, average annual snowfall of 126 inches, and her job is 6 miles round trip, not often on the highway, just saying in many ways short drives. Said short range driving and cold weather contributes to Oil Dilution. So far no signs of it and the 2022 Civic Touring been serviced 3 times now (6 mo., 12 mo., and 18 month routine maintenance). The 10th Gen was the one with Oil Dilution problems. One problem at the Honda Factory/Assembly Plants is the use of defective body parts, They do not care if there are ridges, uneven cuts, scratches, marks, bad paint job, and large Gaps when put together. We will just refer that Honda makes LEGO SNAP ONS. Yes! Honda's quality and workmanship have declined in the last 10 to 20 years. It's all about going Green, or less Emissions, and adding lots of Technology gadgets or semi-functional Safety Features that will either distract you, intimidate, aggravate, lot of lights flashing, and become annoying while driving. For all this crap, less quality and pay a fortunate for the Technology. One Recall been for Electronic Steering, Honda Tech looked at it, and took a Photo and sent to Honda Company. Total time in labor between 5 to 10 minutes but the Honda Dealership needed the car for the whole day as the scheduled appointment was 7:30am ... I was not a walk-in. Civic was ready to be picked up at 4pm as I was called at 3:50pm. It would have been simpler to have waited there providing they do the work at the appointed scheduled time. What's 10 minutes vs the inconvenience that my wife had no car all day. I have a 2023 Camry XSE V6, I have consistantly complained about Very Poor MPG. It gets average of 16.99MPG. Window sticker 22 City/ 26 avg,/32 Highway and I am 9 MPG below average. Toyota trying to convince me that the tires are causing low MPG. I'm not biting. It's an engine problem or computer that not calibrated for the injectors or fuel-air mixture. Toyota has refused to do anything about it. I would accept 2 to 3 below but 9 is way too high. Toyota is just as bad as Honda. Bottom line is about profit and don't care about the person who purchased one of their vehicles. Supposedly, Recalls will be occurring more often in the near future.
@@akita96th I’ve driven Toyota’s for 40+ years. I’ve had 1 Honda. Nissan had to buy back a pickup under the Lemon Law and I had 1 Subaru that was a POS. My first Toyota was a Corolla. It was my college car and after college I had a LOT of student loans so I kept driving my Corolla. It finally died in 02 with 488K miles. Other than routine maintenance, I had to replace 2 radiators and 2 water pumps and 2 alternators, batteries generally last 3-5 years. I drove that Corolla for 24 years. I drove my Camry for 9 years. My RAV for 12 years. I now drive a 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road, double cab, 6’ bed with the Premium and Technology pkgs and plan on driving it until I die. My 1990 Honda was ok, but the valves had to be adjusted every 20K miles, so I got rid of it. I owned a Subaru Forester Touring for 14 months and it was literally in the repair shop at Subaru 75% of those 14 months. The new Toyota trucks with the Turbo engines, I would AVOID at all costs. Toyota makes the Best hybrids on the road today. My wife drove her Camry for 18 years. She now drives an Outback and it has 35K miles and she hasn’t had any problems with it, but we know that it won’t last as long as a Toyota. The new Camry hybrid gets 45-50mpg as does the Corolla hybrid.
@@akita96th Avoid ALL Chrysler and Jeep products because they are owned by FIAT. GM vehicles aren’t very reliable and Ford’s have spotty reliability. I’ve gotten more trouble free mileage from my Toyota’s than any other vehicle brand. If you’re looking for a used vehicle, ask to see the maintenance records if you’re buying from an individual. ALWAYS get a Carfax on ANY used vehicle that you want to buy. It costs about $35 for you to find out a vehicles history in regards to accidents, recalls etc. Avoid Hyundai and Kia as their 2.0L & 2.4L 4cyl engines are a POS and OFTEN blow up Before the 100K mile mark. I do a Lot of research before I purchase a vehicle.

It depends what you get. I have a 2020 Corolla LE and I will review on it on year 5 next year but so far, I haven’t done anything to it which is expected other than maintenance
Ordered a Corolla Hybrid back in Jan 2022. No car yet and now my dealership told me I need to get a new purchase contract. I am 100% sure they sold my order with markups to someone else. I'm going to cancel the order. The dealership is on Eglinton Ave. in the east end of Toronto Canada. Avoid this dealership at all costs.
Hyundai Kia always get bashed by car reviewers but funny enough the issue with those engines was due to metal debris in the engine, that’s the same issue the Toyota Tundra has. I had good luck with the flammable Theta 2.4 engine for 11 years. Yet my Toyota Echo had problems. To each their own but I think Toyota is slipping and they are charging a heck of a premium for their cars.

Toyota is trying to hide the fact that the problem with their engine is the actual design of the twin turbo V6. No recall will fix this unfortunately its just a matter of time for these 22-24 models. Because if it was a manufacturing process then why are the Japanese built engines also failing? So glad I went with a '23 NA V6 Tacoma before the engine change.
Again I hope the best and I hope I am wrong but manufacturing debris is kind of an important piece of info to forget. I hope People with the Tundras get lucky. This really sucks for the owners and is just awful

I bought a 2024 Toyota Grand Hylander Hybrid Premium MAX, and it was a piece of JUNK. I kept it only 4 months and then traded it in. Not only were multiple things going wrong electronically with the SUV, it was also getting extremely poor gas mileage. And to add insult to injury, Toyota refused to fix it...they told me they wouldn't touch it until it was over 16,000 kms. DO NOT BUY A TOYOTA.
I bought a new Camry in 2009. At about 50k miles it started smoking from what I discovered was a defective piston ring (common in Camrys assembled in Kentucky from 2008 to 2013). Toyota never made good on it. 142k miles on it now and in the last 15k miles it has fallen apart even though I had it serviced every 5k miles and took great care of it. Now I need a new car and every company seems to be going turbo, which is a no go for me. I definitely don't trust Toyota any more either!

I love to watch your videos. I’ve been looking online for a 2020 Buick. I haven’t heard a lot of people saying anything about Buick. I know they are you know GM products but there is their luxury brand but I wanted to know because I was looking at a 2020 or a 2023 Buick enclave and I’m coming from a 2020 Nissan Altima. Toyota is the most reliable car maker. If they are labeled as failures, then other car makers aren’t even on the list. We just purchased my family’s 14th Toyota and they have all worked almost flawlessly, just requiring regular maintenance aside from my Toyota Camry hybrid battery change at 210k miles! Just picked up Toyota’s EV, the BZ4X and it’s amazing!

Thanks for the video I agree we should keep away from 1.5 turbo by Honda. Hybrid is a better pick. Best is if u own a naturally aspirated engine before 2017 you have a gold keep it ..
I had 2 Toyota Camrys and both engines failed unfortunately I recommenced a friend buy one and his engine failed also. Toyota engine designers need to go back to school!

We purposely bought a new 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road, double cab, 6’ bed with the Premium and Technology pkgs because I heard that Toyota was dropping the reliable, durable 3.5L Naturally Aspirated (NA) V6 and going to the 4cyl Turbo. I put over 300K miles on my 11 RAV 4WD Limited with the 3.5L V6. I sold it to a friend of ours when I bought my 23 TRD. They live in MT and we live in WA. I saw him in May and he said that my old RAV, still doesn’t burn or leak a drop of oil and runs like a champ. I changed the oil and filter every 5K miles with Mobile 1 full synthetic. I also changed the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid every 30K miles. He knows that I’m a maintenance nut and told me that if I ever wanted to sell my RAV, to give him first dibs. It’s Gold with Tan Leather which was ceramic coated every 6 months and the leather was cleaned and cared for every 3 months so the paint and interior still looks new. It didn’t even have a door ding on it when I sold it to him
Toyota waited too long to change, and were forced to change, and did it too quickly, and now it shows, and now it is costing them ( and their customers ). In todays day and age, you cannot sit on your laurels, you have to continually evolve, and Toyota did not, like other manufactures have done. I would not be buying a Toyota ( and did not recently ) because they were too slow to change, and bought more mature technology from another manufacturer, and at a lower price.
You get what you pay for. It would be better if you bought a good used Corolla or Civic. The Mitsubishi has a horrible reputation for reliability and if you’re in an accident, you’ll probably die or be severely injured.
@@rexonpadre4653Yet somehow other automakers can sell millions of vehicles worldwide. Some of those are sold to former Toyota and Honda owners. A large percentage of the vehicles sold by manufacturers are current owners of that manufacturer's vehicles and they are satisfied with their present vehicle to buy another one from the same manufacturer. Honda's reliability and durability have been declining for years and Toyota has made some questionable vehicles lately.

A good used SUV is a Nissan xterra if you can find one but always have a pre inspection done before you buy it

i stay away anything turbo. If you need bigger engine, power you should buy correct size engine. Dont believe in turbo to give you extra power.😅

It’s The turbos which is causing the issues. Turbos are not known for their reliability. The non turbos ( including the hybrids ) are really reliable and no major problems.
I do think Toyota can make the turbos reliable long term. Only time will tell
Even new Hyundai/Kia engines + transmissions have issues, recent one is gas tank expansion (very unsafe)

Toyota started German complication in their products, now dealing with German reliability.
The only way, Toyota kept their relative reliability, because of the old-school technology and updating their products almost after everyone else.
Customers want V6/V8 not TT 4 or 6 too many issues and Toyota isn t the only one Dodge too.
Anyone interested in used Honda CRV from 2017 to 2019 you should know that trim LX has 2.4 none turbo engine which used by Honda for more than 20 years.

In reference to Hyundai/Kia, we have used Hyundai Tucsons as fleet vehicles for our regional Members since around 2012. They are very well maintained and lots of highway miles. We have had numerous ones with the non-turbo 4-cylinder have their engines replace. Several of them between 95-99k miles. We had horrible experience with the 1.6L turbo engines couple with the Dual Clutch Automatics. Those DCT transmissions were horrible. Unreliable, drivability issues, etc. But the biggest issues have been niggling electrical/electronic issues. Numerous ones have headlight bulbs that go out almost monthly. Cruise control and other buttons in the interior not-functioning, or functioning intermittently. Glitches like the driver's door window buttons will lower the other three windows but not raise them. I really question the reliability of their wiring/electronics/relays. I would not own them out of warranty.
In reference to diesels, I agree with you wholeheartedly. We have light-duty and heavy-duty trucks as well in our expanded fleets. 90% are diesel and the cost for maintenance is astronomical. The DEF systems (the urea fluid that is sprayed on to exhaust) is very problematic, difficult to diagnose, and expense to fix. We've had major problems, especially with the Dodge/Ram 3500 diesels, especially injectors and the fuel injection systems. Definitely stick with older diesels, if you must have one for towing, etc. And if you live in a state where that is possible, remove the DEF system and you'll be much happier.

Research which parts are manufactured in Central America. Oftentimes, those parts are the cause of unreliability and recalls.

My friends Kia minivan engine failed after 5yrs. Costs up to 8k to replace and not even worth it. Run away from Korean cousins.

Wife has 11th Gen. 2022 Honda Civic Touring it's a 1.5L Earths Dream i-4 Turbo since Fall 2022 and as of June 2024 has 6,300 miles. We live in the Northeast, average annual snowfall of 126 inches, and her job is 6 miles round trip, not often on the highway, just saying in many ways short drives. Said short range driving and cold weather contributes to Oil Dilution. So far no signs of it and the 2022 Civic Touring been serviced 3 times now (6 mo., 12 mo., and 18 month routine maintenance). The 10th Gen was the one with Oil Dilution problems.
One problem at the Honda Factory/Assembly Plants is the use of defective body parts, They do not care if there are ridges, uneven cuts, scratches, marks, bad paint job, and large Gaps when put together. We will just refer that Honda makes LEGO SNAP ONS. Yes! Honda's quality and workmanship have declined in the last 10 to 20 years. It's all about going Green, or less Emissions, and adding lots of Technology gadgets or semi-functional Safety Features that will either distract you, intimidate, aggravate, lot of lights flashing, and become annoying while driving. For all this crap, less quality and pay a fortunate for the Technology. One Recall been for Electronic Steering, Honda Tech looked at it, and took a Photo and sent to Honda Company. Total time in labor between 5 to 10 minutes but the Honda Dealership needed the car for the whole day as the scheduled appointment was 7:30am ... I was not a walk-in. Civic was ready to be picked up at 4pm as I was called at 3:50pm. It would have been simpler to have waited there providing they do the work at the appointed scheduled time. What's 10 minutes vs the inconvenience that my wife had no car all day.
I have a 2023 Camry XSE V6, I have consistantly complained about Very Poor MPG. It gets average of 16.99MPG. Window sticker 22 City/ 26 avg,/32 Highway and I am 9 MPG below average.
Toyota trying to convince me that the tires are causing low MPG. I'm not biting. It's an engine problem or computer that not calibrated for the injectors or fuel-air mixture. Toyota has refused to do anything about it.
I would accept 2 to 3 below but 9 is way too high. Toyota is just as bad as Honda. Bottom line is about profit and don't care about the person who purchased one of their vehicles.
Supposedly, Recalls will be occurring more often in the near future.

I’ve had 1 Honda. Nissan had to buy back a pickup under the Lemon Law and I had 1 Subaru that was a POS.
My first Toyota was a Corolla. It was my college car and after college I had a LOT of student loans so I kept driving my Corolla. It finally died in 02 with 488K miles. Other than routine maintenance, I had to replace 2 radiators and 2 water pumps and 2 alternators, batteries generally last 3-5 years.
I drove that Corolla for 24 years. I drove my Camry for 9 years. My RAV for 12 years. I now drive a 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road, double cab, 6’ bed with the Premium and Technology pkgs and plan on driving it until I die.
My 1990 Honda was ok, but the valves had to be adjusted every 20K miles, so I got rid of it.
I owned a Subaru Forester Touring for 14 months and it was literally in the repair shop at Subaru 75% of those 14 months.
The new Toyota trucks with the Turbo engines, I would AVOID at all costs.
Toyota makes the Best hybrids on the road today.
My wife drove her Camry for 18 years. She now drives an Outback and it has 35K miles and she hasn’t had any problems with it, but we know that it won’t last as long as a Toyota.
The new Camry hybrid gets 45-50mpg as does the Corolla hybrid.

If you’re looking for a used vehicle, ask to see the maintenance records if you’re buying from an individual.
ALWAYS get a Carfax on ANY used vehicle that you want to buy. It costs about $35 for you to find out a vehicles history in regards to accidents, recalls etc.
Avoid Hyundai and Kia as their 2.0L & 2.4L 4cyl engines are a POS and OFTEN blow up Before the 100K mile mark.
I do a Lot of research before I purchase a vehicle.

It depends what you get. I have a 2020 Corolla LE and I will review on it on year 5 next year but so far, I haven’t done anything to it which is expected other than maintenance

Ordered a Corolla Hybrid back in Jan 2022. No car yet and now my dealership told me I need to get a new purchase contract. I am 100% sure they sold my order with markups to someone else. I'm going to cancel the order. The dealership is on Eglinton Ave. in the east end of Toronto Canada. Avoid this dealership at all costs.

Hyundai Kia always get bashed by car reviewers but funny enough the issue with those engines was due to metal debris in the engine, that’s the same issue the Toyota Tundra has. I had good luck with the flammable Theta 2.4 engine for 11 years. Yet my Toyota Echo had problems.
To each their own but I think Toyota is slipping and they are charging a heck of a premium for their cars.

I bought a 2024 Toyota Grand Hylander Hybrid Premium MAX, and it was a piece of JUNK. I kept it only 4 months and then traded it in. Not only were multiple things going wrong electronically with the SUV, it was also getting extremely poor gas mileage. And to add insult to injury, Toyota refused to fix it...they told me they wouldn't touch it until it was over 16,000 kms. DO NOT BUY A TOYOTA.
I bought a new Camry in 2009. At about 50k miles it started smoking from what I discovered was a defective piston ring (common in Camrys assembled in Kentucky from 2008 to 2013). Toyota never made good on it. 142k miles on it now and in the last 15k miles it has fallen apart even though I had it serviced every 5k miles and took great care of it. Now I need a new car and every company seems to be going turbo, which is a no go for me. I definitely don't trust Toyota any more either!

I love to watch your videos. I’ve been looking online for a 2020 Buick. I haven’t heard a lot of people saying anything about Buick. I know they are you know GM products but there is their luxury brand but I wanted to know because I was looking at a 2020 or a 2023 Buick enclave and I’m coming from a 2020 Nissan Altima. Toyota is the most reliable car maker. If they are labeled as failures, then other car makers aren’t even on the list. We just purchased my family’s 14th Toyota and they have all worked almost flawlessly, just requiring regular maintenance aside from my Toyota Camry hybrid battery change at 210k miles! Just picked up Toyota’s EV, the BZ4X and it’s amazing!

We purposely bought a new 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road, double cab, 6’ bed with the Premium and Technology pkgs because I heard that Toyota was dropping the reliable, durable 3.5L Naturally Aspirated (NA) V6 and going to the 4cyl Turbo.
I put over 300K miles on my 11 RAV 4WD Limited with the 3.5L V6.
I sold it to a friend of ours when I bought my 23 TRD. They live in MT and we live in WA. I saw him in May and he said that my old RAV, still doesn’t burn or leak a drop of oil and runs like a champ.
I changed the oil and filter every 5K miles with Mobile 1 full synthetic. I also changed the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid every 30K miles.
He knows that I’m a maintenance nut and told me that if I ever wanted to sell my RAV, to give him first dibs. It’s Gold with Tan Leather which was ceramic coated every 6 months and the leather was cleaned and cared for every 3 months so the paint and interior still looks new. It didn’t even have a door ding on it when I sold it to him
Toyota waited too long to change, and were forced to change, and did it too quickly, and now it shows, and now it is costing them ( and their customers ). In todays day and age, you cannot sit on your laurels, you have to continually evolve, and Toyota did not, like other manufactures have done. I would not be buying a Toyota ( and did not recently ) because they were too slow to change, and bought more mature technology from another manufacturer, and at a lower price.

The Mitsubishi has a horrible reputation for reliability and if you’re in an accident, you’ll probably die or be severely injured.

Some of those are sold to former Toyota and Honda owners.
A large percentage of the vehicles sold by manufacturers are current owners of that manufacturer's vehicles and they are satisfied with their present vehicle to buy another one from the same manufacturer.
Honda's reliability and durability have been declining for years and Toyota has made some questionable vehicles lately.
