Fire Agate Carving Techniques ~ Nova Points

  • Hello again,
    I'm transitioning from fine sintered bits to Nova Points from Diamond Pacific. They're really awesome at getting into tough to reach areas. They're durable and come in a wide variety of different grits from 60-50,000. Never run them dry, or it will destroy the bit. I'm using Mineral oil, to get better adhesion to the stone for the coarse sanding. I'll minimize the amount I'm using as I gradually switch to finer and finer burs.

    Mark, do any of your nova points wobble at all?

      I haven't noticed any wobbling, does it happen with other bits too, or just the Nova points?

      @FireAgateMark What if I just grind to the color and throw on a quick polish? Skip the sanding process altogether? My gem looks good now while wet, no noticeable scratches.

    • @FireAgateMark
      @FireAgateMark  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Grinding is the natural first step. I have used only wet/dry sandpaper to finish a stone. I went from 60 to 250 , 400, 600, 3000 and finally 8000 grit. It looked like it was already polished.

    Where can I find an affordable blue and red fire agate? Those 2 colors are the rarest right? Thanks

      Johnny Rice
      Hi Johnny,
      Unfortunately, it you want to be guaranteed to have blue and red, you are looking at "Peacock" Fire Agate, the highest grade. This particular grade of rough is probably around $10/ gram or more. If you get High Grade it gives you a much better chance of finding those colors, but that doesn't guarantee it.

    Hey Mark... did you get the shipment of fire agate we discussed a month ago?

      Not yet, I just spoke with FedEx and hopefully now I can initiate a claim. I did just get another small parcel to help in the meantime. Thank you so much for asking!
