I think Western and Korean standards are so different tho. If you look at the most popular members domestically vs internationally, Korean fans seem to be focused mostly on visuals. For example Red Velvet, I think the most popular domestic member is Irene bc she perfectly matches the Korean ideal of beauty. Internationally, I think Joy is the most popular. Joy has more stage presence IMO. In Blackpink, maybe Jisoo is the most popular domestically, again bc she fits the Korean ideal or maybe Jennie bc she gets the most promo. Internationally tho, Lisa is definitely the most popular. Lisa has amazing stage presence. She has so much charisma on stage. And, Chaeryeong from Itzy was bullied for being the visual hole and ugliest member by knetz, even tho she's one of the most popular members internationally. Not sure how familiar you are with pd101, but similarly you can really tell who has stage presence, who can catch the camera well etc. Ofc, the final lineup mostly depends on who gets the most screentime but there are always some members who are chosen simply for visuals and look f-ing awkward on stage.
Ultimately, the Western gg audience and Asian gg audience is so different. Traditionally, Asian gg are made to appeal to men and Western gg are mainly aimed at young women. Hence, why gg in the West sing more about female empowerment or female friendship vs kpop gg mostly focused on cute concepts with lyrics about dating or relationships.

    • @hina4500
      @hina4500 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I do see a point in their audience differences. It's something rather uncomfortable when I first noticed it. Ageism and overt sexualization do exist in the entertainment world, and in kpop especially. But *this* correlation makes a dangerous impact as idols' concepts, activities, and performances are captured through the male gaze while idols are starting out younger and younger.

I like reactions because I get to see what I'm watching through a different lens and see it differently, and that's exactly what I get watching your reactions.

  • @shengxiong1767

I took your request at face value and didn't think to were kind of comparing it to Kpop. I guess I've seen plenty of VS shows that the things you pointed out were "normal" to me. They're usually elaborate and extravagant, definitely more relaxed. I know they always do clips of the backstage so that wasn't new to me, but I do enjoy them. The "black girl" you kept mentioning definitely caught my attention with her confidence and natural movements.
I agree and disagree with the dancing. Even though someone shows an ability to keep a beat doesn't always mean they can dance. Some people are good at freestyling, but not good at choreographed dances..and same goes the other way around. Like singing, someone who can hold a tune doesn't necessarily mean they know technique and fundamentals. It certainly can be taught though. :)
As far as having personality and confidence, individually and in a group setting, is concerned. It's a recipe that can take time and cultivation. Successful boy bands and girl bands create this dynamic so they have their own star power in combination with their group power. That's what helps with the longevity of their careers. I, personally, don't really care for the cutesy, bubble gum concept. I mean, you can still be cute while being fierce and bad ass.
After hearing your comments, I see what you're saying. Next time you ask to do a reaction like this, I will put on my Jino cap, LOL!

Shawn Mendes is a Canadian singer very popular in the U.S...he was discovered from putting his videos on TH-cam...the guy they keep showing in audience is a famous dj named Zedd ..Shawn Mendes and BTS are very good friends since 2017 Billboard like Halsey..the black young lady has rhythm because we are born with it..our babies will move to any rhythm they hear even before they can walk..dancing is natural to us..you are correct about kpop girls ..their dancing is stiff and all the groups have the same or similar dance moves..even when they try to be sexy or sensual is doesn’t compute to western..they are missing that swag..American males don’t really like cutesy kpop females because they look like little girls..I have heard male reactors ask how old are these girls and it makes them uncomfortable to really get into them...I love watching Victoria Secrets Shows because they always have very good singers like. The Weekend..Bruno Mars..Halsey...and more..of course your friends don’t see what you see..you have an eye and ear for art and artists..you could start your own company..not necessarily just for kpop..an agency that covers many genres of art..maybe when you retire..a lot of young talent out there to be discovered around the world...just a thought my friend...keep giving us different things..we love it..you are never too old to learn..says me 😁👍🏽💜👵🏽🇺🇸

I'll admit I don't know much about this kind of show, but I enjoy getting to know about new things, so here we go, I'll be writing my comment as I watch (pausing of course).
First of all, it seems like a good point to make, that being very in tune with their body would mean that people develope this sort of skills, I've never been particularly good at dancing (I'm short but it hasn't helped haha), so I have an honest admiration for people that have a natural instinct to follow rhythm or to pose & look cool, because I always felt it was such a difficult thing to do.
Quick first thought, the second the stage lights up, my eyes were delighted, those angles & that color, so pretty.
But outside of that, I think I can feel what you mentioned at the begining, the sort of atmosphere going on, it's elegant, but also a little cheeky at the same time? I hope I'm using that word right. And that lady around 9:25 that you mention, I think I see what you meant, she has magnetic energy that makes you look at her, the personality shines through, & her way of walking is very rhytmical too.
I also imagine cultural differences might play a part in what sort of entertainers are more common in a certain place, for example, the cutesy behavior/style that I tend to see in Asia contrasts quite a bit with what I'm used to in Latin America. However, I think that what you call "star power" would still be evident regardless of how they choose to portray themselves.
By the way, I haven't heard much from Shawn either, just like 1 song, but I can see why Jungkook likes him, those are some lovely vocals. But anyway, I actually got some good insight from this video, again, it's not something I'm familiar with but the aspects of a good entertainer seem to prevail regardless or what type of stage they are on, I'm glad I watched!

Ahhh...i never follow any fashion show but I repeat this many times (after you asked us to watch)because The model is so beautiful!! And I like their little movement when interact with shawn (the singer) and backstage. The way some of the model walked in tune with the song is fascinating too since that high heels is tall and they could walked around and bouncy(?) with it
Your fave model is mine too (plus the first one). I like her expression, especially at that part of singing. It just clicked (?)
That second to last model too is indeed attract the attention.
Actually, I’m waiting for your reaction for this video and glad that you did this.

Oof I really like watching fashion walk performances especially to see the models expressions, its such a fun time picking out the personality through the movement hhhh so this reaction was so fun to watch cause I feel like I pick out similar things to you detail wise. I look at it more from a wanting to animate the movement standpoint than gg concept wise but its cool to hear how you interpret it !!

  • @maiszhen
    @maiszhen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This was a really interesting watch. Sometimes I feel idol group 'assemblers' get so caught up in getting the visuals right that they forget a pretty face isn't going to make a performance memorable. Charisma and stage presence are infinitely more valuable than just being doll-like.

When you talked about the models at first I was like 👀, but as the reaction progressed I understood more of what you were trying to say. So by second time through I could appreciate your message more. It's not about the runway, the clothes, their beauty or sexuality, as much as it's an appreciation for what creates a true star and the natural elegance those women exude. The grace, confidence, fluidity and ability to capture someone's attention, are all important aspects to helping someone stand out against the norm and it often goes unacknowledged as to how rare those qualities are. So it was interesting to view those women outside the standard box they're painted in and I'm grateful for that. I wouldn't of taken the time to appreciate those things, had you not pointed it all out.
That said, I know you really liked that one girl, but honestly I felt she was trying too hard to be cute/stand out and it showed. Everything about her was stunning, but it came off as less than genuine, because she tried too hard and her natural charisma was overshadowed by her efforts. (For me anyway. Maybe it's different because I'm woman too?) She wanted to show cute sass, but the most natural part seemed to be the smoulder. Idk, maybe I'm just not seeing what you did 🤷🏼‍♀️ The second girl I can agree with more. Fluid, natural, charming and without pretense which I'm more attracted to long term. I may be alone here, but a loud presence only captures me for a minute; but genuine charisma will make me curious enough to learn more and that's lasting power to me. It's why I'm so picky about my reactors. Flash without substance isn't for me, but I recognize most people don't think that way.
I wanted to give you my honest opinion, because you always give us yours, so if you find this and read this far kudos. It was a long reply 😅

I never saw the fashion show through this point. I've been watching the VS fashion show for years, I know the name of half of those ladies and I know they're not just pretty faces with pretty bodies. Being a VS model is not easy and not a thing everyone could be. They really have something special. At that performance, it was the first year modelling VS for Duckie Thot, she's an amazing australian-south sudanese model with a beautiful personality and aura, I can tell why they chose her, she didn't have a big career back then but her personality spoke for herself. I really admire those ladies and the show itself. I wish one day BTS could perform on that stage. Thank you for your smart thoughts, Jino.

In a way, I enjoy people watching and find little things about them. So I do understand in some way what you mean about seeing the little details. I really enjoy your reactions and the way you analyze because finding people who critically analyze the world is hard.

I love your perspectives on people. You would be fun to people watch with. You have a different take on what I was seeing. I was so focused on the colors on the models and the shapes their bodies were making that the dancing became secondary almost. When I focused on what you were seeing, the dancing came to the forefront. I used to be a no-name dancer and choreographer a very long time ago. Even though I haven't danced in years, I can still spot people that have innate talent for dancing. Those are the ones that usually pick up the choreo easier that others. And I usually can tell just by the way a person walks or talks with their body. But after I saw what you were focused on, my eyes went back to enjoying the colors and shapes. This was an interesting video too. I think I will watch all of your content now.

Lol, Jino, your original request was so neutrally phrased that all of us completely missed your thrust! It sounds like we stripped all the non-music-related comments out of our replies. I'm loving the extended comments everyone is leaving in this section - they are quite different from the ones on your reaction videos.
Everything you're saying in this video, from your thoughts on kpop to 'shorter people make better dancers', has truth in it even while exceptions must and do exist. One thing I've noticed is that these VS girls move very naturally for models; there are _many_, especially in high fashion, that are far less in tune with their bodies. Pageant girls also seem not to have that movement sense (at least back when I still watched pageants). Apart from natural inclination, I wonder if it also has to do with the demographic - the VS Angels I think are far more established, more mature, and generally older - I'd say mid-20s to early 30s? That brings a certain confidence.
Generally, I prefer watching live performances to gauge the real worth of a performer and for me, that's where many female kpop groups fail, if they hadn't already fallen at the MV/concept/song hurdle. (NB. I'm relatively new to kpop.) So far, only Mamamoo works for me: the 2016 MMA stage where they held their own (just!) against drag performers won me over. Like others have said, it's not often you have a group that is more or less evenly talented.
Thanks for chatting about these random details. I used to have many such conversations with my brother before life got in the way and didn't realise how much I've missed it.

This is so completely different from the international fashion show style that's been prevalent for the last decade or more, featuring models who are oddly unappealing, do not smile, and look like heroin addicts. This was impressive. I think because of one model I saw on Dancing With the Stars, or Strictly Dance, I had assumed the worst.

This was really unexpected but fascinating! I'm glad I clicked. This isn't a perspective I've thought about much before. I think it is quite obvious when someone just radiates that star power and has a very clear sense of rhythm. Also, I've thought about that thing you said about short people being better dancers. I've always figured Jimin is such a graceful, controlled, detail-oriented dancer because he's so small. Jhope is also relatively short and he's considered the best dancer in BTS by their choreographer.
I think you might enjoy analyzing the dancing/performance in the Mamamoo 2018 Japan MAMA full performance!

I watch vs fashion shows for some years now and my absolute fav is adriana lima she walks like she owns the world and my fav show was bruno mars' chunky the last model was really amazing.
I agree with what you are saying i have never thought about it before these girls seems spontaneous with their moves although they have rehersed it a hundred time before the show while some girl groups lack that

I LOVE Shawn Mendes and Lost in Japan, such an amazing song. (There's a short choreography piece by Jake Kodish here on youtube that took this song to another level. Not requesting a reaction to it, unless you want to. But if you enjoy good dance then check it out!) You know I never thought of models in the same light of a dancer, but I think you're 100% correct. Which may explain why I actually like watching them, and I just never fully realized it. I was a member of a ballet company for a time, dance major in college, and I focused heavily on studying technique. If you think you're a harsh critic of Kpop, then you never want to sit through dance videos with me. ;-) It's actually what drew me into Kpop. Although I do have to say that I'm not too impressed with a lot of the Kpop girl groups when it comes to dance. I can't take the cheesy level of their choreo, especially when you can tell it's not natural to the performer. Dancers can be taught, but the biggest stars will have been born with it ingrained into the very fiber of their being. The lines their bodies form and the natural character they can bring to the stage is just so amazing to watch. Natural charisma is almost impossible to train into a person. I've seen a lot of good dancers who completely lack the ability to bring the emotional connection to the audience. Which is actually really sad to watch. An amazing dancer can just walk across the stage and convey everything they want to the audience in that single moment (much like a model). They're able to take the most cringe worthy choreo and make it their own. That's the mark of an artist/performer vs. the average generic person. Anyways, I loved the reaction and found it very interesting!
Lol. And I feel your pain about watching something AMAZING and not having anyone to share it with. My poor husband is tortured on a daily bases by me obsessing over a new dance choreo. After 8 years of marriage he actually has a rather good eye for dance now!

This reaction is really good. It needs to be seen by Girl Group producers. You cannot be trained to feel music, to vibe, to groove, to feel the instruments and the vocals pulsating through every part of your body. That is why kpop girl groups seem so mechanical, manufactured. You don't even need to be finger thin, but you have got to love music, at least the kind of music you put out. If you don't feel the music you yourself put out, how will other feel it? First it's that, then confidence, x factor, your own personality quirks....that is what makes a performance vibrant and dynamic. I find those qualities in Hwasa of Mamamoo. She is really good. All of them are. But particularly Hwasa. Jino please react to Mamamoo's Wind Flower. I found it very classy and mature, more womanly and beautifully. vulnerable yet strong and dignified.

YES! Some consider this kind of awareness as noticing subtleties when in actuality the varying forms of expressing boldness and personalities are most vivid. The confidence shown emphasizes the contrast of self assurance between not only the models, but the larger vision at hand which is to paint a fantastical image of empowering wearers with this "new reality" and that it's being made available "to buy" by this brand. They have a huge image though their collections and quality of the majority of products are mediocre. Even with the brand being called out for having offensive perceptions of both body image and sexual identity, it's not so much about comparisons as it is for noting each individual's distinctions-a portrayal- of how this product could enhance oneself or experiences when in actuality you cannot sell the self awareness, the disciplines of mind and body the models have had to implement, and the seemingly natural ease at which most of them exhibit refined through years of work and practice. It was nice to hear your sharing, for these reasons I've always appreciated viewing their shows! Always wondering just exactly how hard each one has had to work internally in their own character, their bodies, with the struggles of negativity, with being able to perform and be themselves when maybe they're not doing so well, with how few are truly comfortable with being present and thus create this magnetic presence that draws us in despite all the camera views switching, and I could go on but won't!

You talk about star power. When I look at the people that you point out who have this, I see individuals with charisma, and soul. No, those are not the right words. I can't seem to find the right term, but they are ALIVE. Not like a cardboard cutout representation of who they are portraying, as so many models and k-pop artists seem to me. Their faces, although beautiful, so often lack personality. One model who I think has that personality is Tyra Banks. Something in her face and her demeanor was always captivating to me, even now.

  • @dariathelazy

For real though, I _do_ notice those details when watching fashion shows... Of which I don't actually watch many - only if there's a line of clothing that I've seen photos of and found aesthetically pleasing. Victoria Secret is one of the rare instances when I tune in somewhat regularly and can always expect sky high level of production quality. Models in some other shows can bore me out of my mind sometimes, because of the lifeless and stiff way they walk, but with VS it's never like that.
    The thing is though,
yes, those models are beautiful, sexy, cute and confident, and perfectly in control of their bodies, but I never think "What if she became a pop star?" They're models, that's their craft, their pride, something they have passion for and worked hard for, so of course that's what I'm seeing. If they are stars on a runway, though, it doesn't _necessarily_ mean they would be stars in dancing or singing (since we're talking about Kpop), because it may be something that they're not as passionate for. I see your point, though, and Kpop agencies definitely need to pay attention to the confidence and 'star power' people have, not just _'looks first, and then we'll train them to do whatever we need of them',_ because unfortunately some things can't be achieved though practice alone.

I also wish kpop gg were given complex choreos like boy grps you know. Most kpop gg dances are soo recycled i wish they were given more amazing choreos as im sure they are much greater dancers than they are given credit for. You should watch halsey and rihannas victoria secret show. Rihanna does a ramp walk and outsold aall the models! Ive watched it like a hundred times omg!

Victoria Secret Show considered as the top fashion show, so models chosen to walk as Victoria's Angel or has contract with, considered the top models and they are professional, they know exactly how to walk, getting the right rhythm to walk, the lighting, how to express with the song etc, but yes not everyone of them has superstar power... I love watching Victoria Secret Show, bcuz every year has different theme and performance and they all look amazing....
If kpop gg would be like that, omg, but the difference of confidence level is huge since gg not top models, just like you ask models to sing or dance, they'll feel awkward too...
To me Mamamoo has it, sexy and confidence when they perform, I like them, too bad you don't really like them...

Lol Jino, I see you are a big fan of Victoria secret 👀. Some people are just born to perform. Easy to say someone can become a kpop idol. In kpop you gotta be able to sing, dance and be confident and not yield to the pressure of a monstrous industry. Even the most confident people can be brought down. You gotta develop a thick skin too.
Are your friends in the kpop industry? Casual viewers arent usually on the lookout for this type of stuff. Still, you have an eye for good talent and star power. Maybe you should enter this line of work haha. Definitely like your reactions because you offer very interesting perspectives. I dont always agree with everything you say, but I appreciate the discussion it brings. Cheers ✌️.

I thought the connections you made between the models and kpop girl groups was really interesting. I dont know if I understood everything but I feel like theres an authenticity to the "cuteness, sexiness, and confidence" with these models that I dont often find with girl groups. I feel like a lot of kpop girl groups are trying to fullfill what they think is "cute, sexy, and confident" that they're not nurturing it naturally the way I feel like these models are, so I often feel like girl groups are trying to sell me something. But I also think that comes down to the freedom/casualness of this type of fashion show. I feel like girl groups are often so controlled, usually by males within their company, according to what they think would sell. Girl groups, and some boy groups just feel too trained I guess, and they miss out on garnering their own authenticity. Sorry for blabbering, this video was very thought provoking once i was looking at the models and kpop girl groups side by side. Thanks for always giving us a unique perspective!
