Ganbare is kinda telling someone "let's go!", cheering them on. In Japan you'd tell this to someone who is nervous about a test, or during a sports event. Japanese Sukuna is cheering the curse on, obviously in a mocking way, which is why it's canonical Sukuna. Sukuna is an asshole, but he's sly af about it. Instead of being outwardly anal, he says it in a charming sweet tone that makes the victim feel like shit, because as he's being analytical, he's telling his opponent "you're not shit" in the way he speaks.... Dunno why the dub script went for "try harder", when they should've worked around a more accurate translation to represent the scene at hand. He's mockingly cheering him on, not challenging him to try harder: "Come on, come on!", "Let's go, let's go!, "Go for it, go for it!" While they may sound weird, that's what Japanese Sukuna is doing. That's the original direction this scene is supposed to go. Mockingly cheering the curse on, not being a dick about it by telling it to try harder- because that's what Sukuna does. He's an asshole, but isn't obvious about it when he talks down on others. That's what makes his ass bearable and not cringy AF. I have no idea why the English Voice Director has no sense of direction with most of the characters in the dub, but Sukuna isn't supposed to sound like a school jock bully who smokes a pack a day. What makes him intimidating is his personality and the way he outwardly expresses his confidence- he's unpredictable in the way he speaks and fights. The English VA had one job. The Russian VAD and VA understood the assignment, just fyi lol. I have no idea why they went with this approach for dub Sukuna. He's not meant to be annoying or obviously evil. He's meant to be interesting, intimidating but in a way that makes him charming in the sense that he hardly, if ever, raises his voice while he beats the confidence out of his opponents. I think if they toned down English Sukuna where he sounds more analytical, dangerous, unpredictable, and mocking, they'd do great. From what I'm seeing in the comments, Ray Chase is an appreciated VA, so I'd hope the voice director does their job properly and utilize his talent, rather than make it sound like this man never knew what character he was voicing in the first place. That's why you see these sub vs dub arguments. The performance and communication between the VAs and the VA directors in English (and I'm looking at you too Spanish dub) is lackluster AF. I wish they'd take this kind of criticism and actually work off it because eholy fucking shit imagine how great dub would become if they actually cared to listen to people who openly talk down on them for their half hearted efforts.
