Watched your videos for so many years and i was just googling stuff for my bike and just found this old video its hilarious to see how much your style has changed
Any parts store can get you set up with oil, brake fluid, and filters. Amazon works as well. I put some links in the video description for parts that would fit the bike in the video. But just change the year once you get into amazon, and it will tell you what you need to buy.
Good video. One reminder though. The oil filter cover bolts are stainless steel and they thread into the aluminum block. Since steel and aluminum cool at different speeds they also expand and contract at different speeds. Because of this, you should let the engine cool till it's stone cold or you risk stripping the aluminum female threads. This is from my own experience.
@@jetstream454 Drain the oil with a warm engine, but don't change the filter till the engine cools. It's the bolts to get to the filter that will strip if the engine is still hot.
There is a special kind of oil for motorcycles. Don't use car oil. I linked some on Amazon in the video description, you can order from there if you want. But you can also buy it at any car parts store.
It really is a fantastic bike, And ya, those bolts are super stuck on there due to the constant heating and cooling of the bike. Mine came off without heating them up though, or dw blaster.
There should be a little window in the side of the motor that will let you see how much oil is in the bike. Make sure the bike is UPRIGHT when checking the oil. If it is leaning on the kickstand, the window will not be correct.
I had an old Vstar 1100. Great bike. I was just thinking about picking up another one, then your video reminded me about having to dismantle the exhaust and engine just to change the oil filter. It's all coming back to me now! What a ridiculous design by Yamaha. I still may get it....
I have a '99 XVS1100. Thanks for this vid. I already checked the service manual but sometimes it's not very clear. It's helpful to see it done. I picked up an external filter kit from eBay for $150, a little over half a new one. I'll be putting it on once I fix the electrical problem - hit the start button and there's a loud click, all the lights go out. Suspecting the starter relay or the starter cut-off relay... I'd rather rebuild an engine than mess with electrical problems,.. lol
Just changed my bikes oil bought it a few weeks ago and like you the previous owner didn't know when the oil was last changed. This video helped me a ton thank you for showing all the steps and placements
It is pretty annoying when you have to take off the exhaust to get to the tire. I recently purchased a Ducati, and it has the same problem; the exhaust has to come off in order to remove the tire. I dont think there is a simple work around for it.
I just watched this in 2023. Thanks man. Nice video 👍🏻 very simple and to the point. - can’t believe how good these bike hold up. Mine still looks brand new. I don’t ride it much though. (- 10,000 miles ) on it Anyone who’s still doing this bikes oil change, There is short angle bits now or flexible bits that fit behind that pipe to change the oil without removing the exhaust. I always do anyways because it’s cleaner. But I know some people forget about the exhaust gasket or don’t have one when they take it off and find out theirs is trash when they remove the pipe in the front of the engine and then they’re stuck trying to find one mid oil change. (Just order one ahead of time they’re super cheap) search vstar 1100 exhaust gasket
Thank You! Just bought a 2008 Yamaha Vstar 1100 and wanted to change the oil. This was probably to shortest TH-cam video I have ever seen and the most informative!
I know your pain, electrical is no fun. And to be honest, i'm not even sure how to help you start with your issue. Good luck! I hope you get it figured out.
Holy crap, I was looking up videos on '08 xvs1100 oil change, and didn't even realize I clicked on a video by JerryRigEverything, whom I watch for his quality cellular test/teardown videos. Super awesome. He's definitely come a long way in quality as well in 6 years. It's also weird to not hear him talk in his Shatner pausing tone.
Thanks for the video. Just did mine this afternoon (2003 VStar 1100) and I bet a lot of these bikes don't get filter changes very often! It took me a little over 3 hours, by far the worst part was trying to line the front pipe up, what a PITA!
Thank you so much. I’ll be doing my own from now on, especially since the shops charge an arm and a leg for this simple thing. I appreciate you greatly man. I’m trying to learn to fix my own bike. I’m moving to a new house that has a huge garage so part of it will be a bike shop. I have a lot to learn but the journey will be fun and at least I’ll know the job was done right.
Having to remove exhaust just to change the oil filter is bad design, however you put it. That’s why I always check what’s needed for regular maintenance before deciding what bike to buy. Vstar 650 doesn’t need to remove the exhaust, and I’m happy about it. Honda bikes are generally very considerate for maintenance, and I buy Hondas
Thanks for the info. The dealer told me the oil never needs changing, but I know better and this was just what I needed. Thanks again! Oh, you did not mention what type of oil, otherwise, very good.
Who would have thought after watching scratches at a level 6 with deeper grooves at a level 7 I would stumble upon you again for an oil change on my bike! Thanks haha
I see comments on this post go back awhile. Just to let you know it still current. I have a 1999 v-star and just about to change the oil. I like this video because it's not too long yet covers all the important info. Thanks
Had a similar situation. 2005 Vstar been sitting for a while. Owner didn't know last oil change. I knew about the filter, but being a huge guy I didn't see the drain plug on my first pass.
Very helpful! I just bought a 2005 V-twin 1100 Silverado...and am going to change the oil myself, because, like you, I want reliable and current records. Thanks for posting!!
I like your style man. You cut to the chase and get the job done. I believe I saw other vids on this subject that ate 20+ minutes of time or longer! So many guys who put up instructional vids go blah blah blah about ch!t that's just plain common sense, or makes no sense to go on about at all. Or maybe they just like the sound of their own voice. Thanks for keepin' it succinct pal!
thanks. I just bought my 1100 and couldn't figure out where the window was and was looking for a dipstick under the seat. much appreciated thank you...
Getting my bike out of winter storage and getting ready to do the spring oil change (if it ever stops snowing up here)...very helpful. Next I will check out carb cleaning. Thanks.
Wow this is an old school JerryRigEverything video, As a fan, Its amusing to see your old video's when you were still an amatuer, and without the high degree of confidence that is displayed in modern videos. Nonetheless, it's still a well made video, that is importantly, short sweet and to the point. Thanks.
great video I was afraid to change the oil myself because I dint know where the filter was but now I do so I'll be saving myself a few bucks by doing this myself now thanks
Bro, I’ve recently got my first motorcycle and I was looking for an good oil change video. I was scrolling and I was like “is that fake jerryrigeverything video lol”. That was until I played and was like omg it is his voice 😆 Man you’ve come a long way, still awesome and helpful Like always 💕 Thank you
Appreciate the help! New to this and will for sure be watching the video again come time for my oil change! Just watched a video elsewhere on how to adjust the shock. Very helpful as well and completed in less than 1-1/2 hours! Appreciate you guys taking the time.
i had the same issue with my 2001. it was not the relay, but was the ground on the engine. it is located in front of the rear shock. back the bolt out clean the surface and see if that helps.
Thanks for the nice video. One small point: notice that the two bottom screws on the right side cover are different. One has a larger head and in slightly longer. The Clymer manual says that he bolt with the larger head goes into the hole with the small black o-ring around it. Has anyone figured out how to modify the front exhaust pipe so that it doesn't need to be removed to change the oil? I ground down a 5-mm Allen key and was able to loosen the two lower bolts, but they were still too long.
Hi - good concise video. You said to leave questions in the comments … hope to hear back from you. What is the size of the crush washer that goes on the drain plug threads?
Yeah nice one, thanks dude, great vid. I really like the way you didn't make a big deal out of having to pop the exhaust off, it's as simple as you made it look! Thanks again
I can't access the drain bolt because the stand bracket bolt is in the way and the groove around the drain bolt is too small. Thoughts? I could remove the stand bracket bolt to provide socket wrench clearance, but I'd have to invest in a stand first and would rather not.
Holy crap, I knew you did some auto videos but I never expected to see a video about this motorcycle.( I have the same one) Awesome video. Love the phone tests.

thanks bro never done an oil change on a bike it did help out a lot i even proved some one wrong when they tried to tell me the easy way by taking off the two long bolts from the bottom with out taking off the piping hahhh but yeah your video showed how the job is done great video an thanks
Love my v star 1100;) Did I hear you say you need to replace both O rings and the little washer at that bottom screw. If so do they come with the filter purchase or do I have to go to the bike shop to get em? Thanks. Nice video, much appreciated.
I'm going to give this a shot. Thanks for the video, I'll let you know how it goes. Thing that always got me was the tailpipe and footboard having to come off LOL
I managed to complete this Jerry! Took about 6-7 hours over 2 days, some of the bolts were difficult....I thought the entire tailpipe had to be removed but the front half slides into the back half, that helped. Thanks!

Why would you change a fuel filter when changing your oil lmfao rewatch your video

i just watched this video in 2020. actually helped me a lot.
Just watched in 2023. I have an 07 I was taking to the shop to have this done but the cost was ridiculous by the end

Man I was about to spend 100 bucks plus all the parts to have someone do this for me... I'm new to motorcycles, this was very helpful thanks!
Fantastic video! Just did my first oil change and followed your instructions . Flawless! Thanks so much for posting such an informative video!!

great video because i wanted to change the oil in my Yamaha v star 1100cc

I put a Barron's oil filter relocation kit on my V-star 1100. I highly recommend one.
Nice, Ill have to look into that.
You won't be sorry if you put an oil relocation kit on your 1100. Barron's kit fits perfectly and it's money well spent.

You would think you would say the amount of oil, which oil you used, some information about the exhaust gasket, and links.
Awesome helpful video. I heard this was a pain, but my wife wanted this bike. Now if I could just get her to change her own oil...

Thanks a million! Already feel like I know how to do it, haven't even started yet.
Solid video! I’ve known about you for a while and you have some good videos but I had no clue you had a Vstar. Amazing. Thank you for the help my man!

Short but very effective could you tell me where to find the oil filter I am in Mississauga Ontario canada
Thanks..I just bought the bike and had no idea how to check or change the oil!
Jeff Williams It was way different for me too! I had no idea what was going on. Glad I could help you out!
Thanks for the video. Looking to pick up a used Yamaha V Star 1100 this weekend. Hoping it goes well. Just doing a little research into the model.
thanks for the share made easy work of the oil change but are there any spec on torquing the bolts back on??
You skipped the part where you broke the oil drain plug, I can't fit the socket wrench properly down there, what tool did you use?
Hi - good concise video. You said to leave questions in the comments … hope to hear back from you.
What is the size of the crush washer that goes on the drain plug threads?

Yeah nice one, thanks dude, great vid. I really like the way you didn't make a big deal out of having to pop the exhaust off, it's as simple as you made it look! Thanks again
what type of oil is best to use. also what type of filter. this is my first bike. I am doing the oil change myself. thank you
Thanks. I normally work on vintage bikes and my cousin asked me to service is V-star for him. Looks like a piece of cake. Thanks for posting.
Rob
No problem! TH-cam is an awesome place to share projects. You should post some of your own videos! I'd subscribe.
Good work on the video. I just got a 1100 also. This makes everything easier.
Good video, sure beats these guys with all the stories and funky music

Yamaha motorcycles are good motorcycles.I had a V star 650cc.Very little problems.I had trouble with my legs.Had to get rid of it.
Thanks for the help. Very well presented with a calm quiet voice. No unnecessary information to filter through. To the point and very helpful!
Thanks! I'm glad I was able to help you.
Thanks for well done video - helped me on Sunday complete the task.
Fantastic video. One of the best that I've seen for this bike. I'm buying mine soon so it'll be a good video to follow.
nice job dude, clear and easy to follow
TheYogiMatt Thanks! Glad I could help.
Thanks for the clip. Very nice of you. Gave me the info I needed to get the job done.
No problem! Glad I could help you out.
What do you use on your seat and saddle bags to get them to look that nice?
A real pain in the but bad design oil filter situation.
I’m watching in 2024 thanks bud
I have a part problums need 6 little springs that cushion the shift ingagment

Thanks for the video. Its looks much easier then was only verbally described. Just picked up a used Vstar 1100 and will get that done.
Thx bro, just got my bike about to go do a oil change on it
Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to set this up.
Fredy Bajo No problem! TH-cam is a great place.
Good video, thanks! Is there a crush washer to replace on the drain plug? Would you change the O-rings every time you change the oil or just depending on how the look like? Thank you!
thanks bro never done an oil change on a bike it did help out a lot i even proved some one wrong when they tried to tell me the easy way by taking off the two long bolts from the bottom with out taking off the piping hahhh but yeah your video showed how the job is done great video an thanks

what kind of il and oil filter is used for these bikes i have a 1200
Hi thanks for that, very helpful. Did you do the whole thing on the side stand? I couldn’t tell if you had the bike raised up on blocks or anything?
I'm going to give this a shot. Thanks for the video, I'll let you know how it goes. Thing that always got me was the tailpipe and footboard having to come off LOL
