I’ll never get over how far these two great champions left the rest of the field behind. To this day, this is one of the greatest races ever and they were both spectacular on this day. Both monsters.
What a historic race run by both champions! There isn't any loser here. Chrome ran one of the best races of his life and is not diminished in defeat, and Arrogate certainly stamped himself as a beast of a horse. Both showed up and both ran monumental. This is what racing is all about. Chrome will go down as one of the all-time greats and I suspect if Arrogate keeps on his game next year, he just might as well.
riotracer that was not chromes best race ever but I'm really nervous for the Pegasus World Cup I hope chrome gets revenge and retires well with a great record he's already won so much I really don't won't him to retire with 2 losses in a row. Arrogate Is a freak i hope he has a bright and successful career !!!
#Howtobeme? Well he certainly didn't. CC was certainly injured in the PWC, if you saw the way Victor had top force him to change his lead in the home stretch
California Chrome ran a 119 Beyer in this BCC. It was his career best but it came in a 2nd-place effort. Arrogate was just a freak who could beat anyone, but his excellence only lasted for a short while. After his Pegasus win Arrogate just lost his mojo and closed out his career with a series of losses without being finishing on the board. Arrogate burned phosphorus-hot but burned out quickly -- basically all during his 3 yr old year. Chrome burned white-hot from age 2 through age 5.
@@ScotchIrishTarheel You don't know what your talking about. Arrogate came out of the Dubai lame and never recovered from that incredible run he made in that race and effort that was required. Watch him when he was breezing after the race and watch his tail and ears. This horse always finished with his ears pricked and he was in pain. Chromeheads...excuse after excuse after excuse.......and guess what.......Ghostzapper would have beaten them all and in fact ran the fastest Beyers and speed record ever which has never been eclisped and never will.
Arrogate is one of the fastest horses we have seen in a very, very long time. This is not a "good" horse. This horse is absolutely spectacular. A true specimen. Without a doubt one of the most talented ever. Period. Fastest 1 1/4 in the history of New York racing. Some called it a fluke. Others considered the track at Saratoga probably played fast and that the final time was simply an aberration. So Arrogate simply follows up that performance with a 120 Beyer, defeating a loose on the lead California Chrome, a sensational older horse who ran the fastest race of his career in defeat. So much fun to be a race horse fan right now.
It's great to think that even AP clocked a 120 beyer in his Classic last year.. And Arrogate is a fresh 3 year old just starting his career.. And has already clocked two 120 beyers (120 & 122).. Forced Chrome to run the fastest he's ever had to run, and he lost.. And Arrogate barely drew a breath.. This horse is a monster. He's a freak. A fresh 3 year old just doesn't do that, not what he's done so far. I love Pharoah with all that I have in my heart.. He was sensational and perfection, and I'm sad we never got to see his best. Arrogate is sort of lessening the sting.. He's leaving me wondering, had he run in the TC races this year, in this form, would we have had 2 consecutive Triple Crowns? His stamina seems unlimited. He's a rocket, he's relentless. Arrogate is just.. Abnormal.
yesssssss!! this horse is an absolute BEAST. I cannot wait for his upcoming season. He runs like an older male and given how underwhelming last year's two year old crop was, I cannot WAIT to see how this Silver Bullet fairs against next year's crop.
I think he was just looking to see what side the big A was on Cause he went from inside to the outside.... No shock that Arrogate was there. More shocked he happened passed him yet! ;)
I don't think he was shocked , nothing surprising about the big A being right there..... California Chrome is an amazing horse regardless of second finish.... Huge soft spot for Arrogate.... No horse puts on a finish like him..... I watch his races over and over and they never get old....
Agreed, he may have though he was supposed to be coming based on pre-race analysis. But he looked left in the far turn saw nothing mid way through the far turn, then looked right and saw nothing 3/4 through the far turn. The whole time he didn't ask a thing from Chrome. Then a last look to his right as they entered the stretch and boom there was arrogate. That was certainly a shock in the moment. He would have started pumping on Chrome earlier if he had been able to see Arrogate coming. I mean you can see the surprise he had because Chrome jumped a path inside when Victor started pumping. It wasn't a natural build up. I'd like to think if Chrome put a little more distance between him and Arrogate at the end of the far turn he could of held on by a nose at the end. But maybe Arrogate was just to good that day. Either way. Good riding from both Jocks. Great Horses. Great Race
Victor Espinoza pushed California Chrome to the lead, they controlled the early slow pace, but Arrogate just ran by them; Arrogate is a very good horse. Another outstanding racer by the late Unbridled Song. Winning time was 2:00.11 at Santa Anita, OK, same as Fort Larned at Santa Anita in 2012.
711ATOM I was impressed with how fair the dirt played for the weekend, not many frontrunners hanging on, apparently someone at Santa Anita discovered what a harrow is used for.
Stop making excuses for CC. It was a big loss. The announcer said :47 at the half was easy for CC. CC is not the Best Horse in the World, losing to Arrogate. He is a much bigger horse than Arro, older more mature, and should have beaten him. It's only one and a quarter miles, Kentucky Derby. Beholder ran the same distance in 1:59.77. A better time than CC at the same age. His times are nothing to brag about, and neither is his won loss record. He has won lots of money. That does not make him the world's greatest horse, just the richest. I don't see what everybody sees in him. He does not bear weight, Shared Belief beat him easily. I love how the announcer said, "CC ran a great race today, but got beat." Nothing about Shared Belief.
aj gensel I don't know who makes me more sick. Secretariat worshhippers or CC worshippers. Maybe I did not read the post correctly or in full. Arrogate is a mystery. Is he really as good as he looked in onlly two races? What do you think?
Theee Classic wins in a row for Bob Baffert, all accomplished with long striding three-year-old colts, amazing. Arrogate has that long striding gallop just like AP had last year, it wears down their competition, they cover so much ground with each stride, a great genetic weapon, they can both thank Unbridled for passing it down to them.
Different biomechanics. Arrogate runs like a locomotive, slow to get started progressively gains because of his stride length then eventually hits top speed and just seems to keep going faster. He has an absolutely MONSTER stride. He runs with his head low and his entire body seems to stretch out and run 'close to the ground'. Pharoah however showed what I would call a more 'perfect' stride. He had a lot of natural early speed. The kind of stride he had just glided effortlessly across the ground because it was ultra efficient. His style was that of a horse with a good cruising speed, he would generally take the lead if he could, maintain his speed for most of the race then kick away at the end. His stride was not necessarily remarkably long, just cost-efficient.
Great Race! Never thought ABROGATE was going to catch CALIFORNIA CHROME, especially being wide throughout and CHROME dictating the pace. I honestly thought with nobody challenging on the front end and CHROME setting a 47:15 half, it was all about who would be second. But this is why Mike Smith is one of the greatest big race riders of all time.
Arrogate is also just a freak three year old. To do this at three in his second ever stakes race after doing what he did in the Travers in his stakes debut. That just doesn't happen. Bob Baffert is so fucking lucky. That's two freak, monster, beastly three year olds in consecutive years. I only wish Arrogate were ready by the TC series. Oh, and speaking of BB, he really is one of the luckiest guys on Earth. He's literally fortunate to just be alive after what transpired overseas several years back. I'm always nervous for the guy in these huge races. The back of my mind can't stop asking the question, "Is he sure his heart can take the thrill?"
i still give Chrome alot of credit. A great Horse. And now another great Horse, Arrogate takes over. I hope Arrogate runs next year and the next. For Chrome, its time to retire after a great career.
A turn up and those colours that carried so many great names like Dancing Brave, Frankel and Midday, the latter previous Breeders Cup winner amongst others.
California Chrome has had a brilliant career and ran a solid race here. However, Arrogate's career is just beginning to bloom and here we saw a great horse run a steady, mature race guided masterfully by Mike Smith who avoided the speed duel early, kept Arrogate out of trouble but close enough to press the pace. He made defeating one of the greatest horses of all time look easy. What we saw here was the passing of the torch.
I think this year's BC Classic was nothing more than a case of a lightly raced, very fresh, and hugely talented 3YO in Arrogate taking advantage of the weight for age break he was getting from arguably the best older conventional dirt horse in the world in California Chrome who was coming into the Classic at the end of a very long, tough, and taxing season. I think all of those factors combined are what ultimately decided the outcome of this race, IMO.
What surprises me is that Arrogate never had the lead until the last 10 yards or so. Was third for most of the race and at one point about 6 lengths behind. This horse can run!
One of the Best Performances ever seen! Right up there with the all-time great Americans! Timeform 139 vs 138.. When was the last time this occurred!? It could be the highest rated battle in history!
Victor waited to long to get Chrome rolling, at the top of the turn, he should have whipped Chrome. Arrogate has a freakish stride and he overtook Chrome going three strides to Chromes like 4 or 5. Chrome was still trying to get to full speed to keep ahead of Arrogate when he passed him. Dammit, Mike Smith is one if the greatest and smartest jockeys of all time.
AnnaNicolesDeathbed That's no excuse, it was the Breeders Cup a very important race worth 6.2 million. But your right it was a big let down especially with Chrome and Flintshire both finishing second in the Classic and Turf. The distaff wasn't bad tho.
Larry Burndorf Not really, the stretch drive is usually when a racehorse accelerates the most other then leaving the starting gate. If you want me to go all anatomy of a horse and such go on ahead but I know what I'm talking about. Plus, does it look like they are slowing down at the top of the stretch? Hell no....!
AnnaNicolesDeathbed Idk, I never saw it live. But I don't think so, but Arrogate, Tourist, and Beholder weren't big upsets. Most I can see any of the winners being is 3-1 or 2-1 maybe even less.
AnnaNicolesDeathbed Talk about it, it's been a big let down, especially with Chrome. Even Stellar Wind never got to run her race either, terrible start and was never there. If these horses meet again in the 12 million Pegasus World Cup in January, that will decide and prove a lot of unknowns in all of these horses.
One of the great races in thoroughbred history. Both horses are in the top of all time. The tragedy is Arrogate died way too soon to leave his legacy behind,
The locomotion of this guy Arrogate out of this world. I read somewhere that he reminded one of the trainers of Spectacular Bid, me too. I hope they run him as a 4yo and the infirmities his sire is known to pass along pass him by. If so racing fans like myself can look forward to the possibility of watching a horse possibly be among the list of top ten all time greats. The thing is he's just a baby learning to run. I want to see him in the fall of 2017.
FUCKING GET IT MIKE. I lose it every time, no matter how often I watch this race. Arrogate is a monster. He is LEAGUES better than any horse we've seen in the past ten years. An absolutely fucking monster.
this is one of the best Breeders cup classic ever Arrogate is a true young horse California chrome hell of a champion down the stretch you see Victor lookng through his left and then he looks at he's right and then was too late cause Arrogate was ask ealier so he was gaining one chrome that was ask late but yeah what a performance by California chrome and Arrogate great race only true hores racing fans understand that horse racing is life man !
1:10.98 is a bit quick for Chrome, but I think quite frankly Smith's move just fooled Victor, he peeks over his right shoulder nobody there, left shoulder nobody there, back to the right, o damn he's right there, RUNNNN :)
I think Victor made his move too soon, and you can credit Smith with that move to the rail coming out of the turn. I think Victor was not ready for that - didn't see it and then reacted in a panic....,Smith just pummeled Arrogate in the stretch - that was ugly.
He's an awesome experienced jockey. Probably notices how Victor always looks around. where others don't....they just GOOOOOOO. So Mike had Victors number and a horse agile enough to change lanes FAST to trick Victor. LOL GREAT ride by Mike . I wish Chrome had won that though BUT we figured there would be a good fight to the finish. And there was. I love races like that. Both horses came out fine. both horses were beasts. Ran great races. Mike came out praying and smiling BIG , Baffert too......Victor looked confused in his after race interview. LOL He should know to GO and don't look back. Especially on Chrome. oh well. Done. Over with. Now to move on to Chromes last race. Amen.
Enough abuse of California Chrome. He is a real champion. I think he should be retired. He has done so much for his owners. Time to give him a nice retirement. Arrogate, what a horse. He is a track record holder. an amazing horse. Very rare beast. Wish him a healthy life with lots of wins.
Gel B C.C is a horse with too much lucky. Why not have a Match between American Pharoah and Cali Crhome? because they (owner) need create a big show for any race. look, the slogan has... The star come back to Hollywood. and one simple horse with a big haeart still the show... P.D: Shared belief was a better horse...
That means that poor animal made so much money for his fucking men owners. He is an old horse. They run him for fucking so many races, because he is a champion. How do you like if someone make you work 100 hours every week for many years?
How did this happen? When I saw him win the Travers, I thought this has got be an aberration, but now it's beginning to look like he's a freakish mutant. I had never even heard of him until the Travers, but he was a Baffert trained horse so Bob must have seen something to make such a huge jump in class. His only wins prior to that were allowance races. Just think of all the great horses that have run on that track and he not only set the Stakes record, but broke the track record. It's not like California Chrome ran poorly either. He ran just about as good as he could have. He just got outrun. I hope they don't send this horse to breeding shed anytime soon. That would be a shame.
Arrogate is a brilliant horse. In my opinion Victor needed to let Arrogate come through the inside because chrome does not hold outside charge (Shared Belief). Victor should have rode chrome hard from the top of the lane (but its easy to say all this watching a video, harder to do it for real on a horse and in 2 minutes). Valiant effort from both Champions. Bob Baffert certainly has the winning formula with 3 breeders cup classic's in a row and this year belonged to Mike Smith and his smooth riding. Great Breeders Cup show!!!
As for the race itself, it was a Classic. As big a Chrome fan as I am, I take my hat off to Arrogate. He is a brilliant racehorse and richly deserved this win. Congrats to Bob Baffert, he most definitely is the top trainer in the sport. At age 51, Mike Smith is in his absolute prime as a rider. He might still be in the saddle at 70. Who knows? I'm sure this took a little of the sting out of that Distaff loss to Beholder. 25 victories in Breeder's Cup races says it all. As for how Victor Espinoza rode Chrome, no complaints, whatsoever. Chrome ran the fastest race of his career. It just wasn't quite good enough. End of story.
I really wanted to believe Arrogate was exactly what I thought he was. Gosh what a great colt, love that low, bounding stride. Why do you suppose Baffert puts a shadow roll on him, can't really make his stride any longer...maybe he just doesn't know how to find his runners without it.
I know, his stride is massive. I was hugely skeptical of him after the Travers. I wanted to believe it as well, but there was no further stakes evidence to back it up. His backers were going on almost pure faith. After this, Arrogate is a total freaky beast. That makes two in consecutive years for Bob Baffert. If only Arrogate were ready for the TC series.
I remember this race well. I was singled to Chrome in the pick 5. Had it a bunch of times. Heartbreaker. Never left Arrogate out again after that, but should have used him anyways. He was the only other horse in the field that had a shot that day. Although I'm a big Effinex fan too.
I have been a fan for over 3 decades now, this Arrogate has a monster stride the longest i have ever seen in quite some time, but thats not the reason why he caught a champion like Chrome at the wire. i thought mike clearly out rode espinosa, i felt had espinosa started pushing at the 3/8ths and stop moving around so much on the darn horse Chrome would have had room to hold him off late. but what ifs maybe if dont win races. i thing arrogate is an outstanding thoroughbred but with that big body they will have to race him very lightly if he is going to be around to withstand the rigors of thoroughbred training. Thats just my PO.
Victor got too comfortable on the lead and lost track of where Arrogate was. Mike Smith rode brilliantly. When Arrogate got Chrome locked in his sights it was on. Chrome also doesn't do well when he hooks up with horses in the stretch. That was shown when he lost against Shared Belief.
I agree completely. Mike had Arrogate on the outside and then moved him to the rail and back to the outside to duel with Chrome. I really felt Victor lost track of where Arrogate was. In an interview after the race, Mike said he switched from left to right whip to tell Arrogate to go. I was happy for Mike"s win. He's one of my favorites. Love Chrome but I really expected Arrogate to win.
Dont eat your words, remember HOLY BULL, the racing gods dont care about ability, one bad step and he is just another BCC winner and nobody ever remembers. There is no 4 year old season until they run it, he is tained by baffert we dont know yet if he is the next beyern. chrome all time money earner thats saying something. that just 30 years of horse racing anecdotes empirically spoken.
julie hertz Aarogate is only fast because of the excessive use of the crop. Take the crop away during that race and Aarogate never would of caught Chrome. Seven other horses were 10 lengths behind Chrome.
Angie Price Then obviously you don't know anything about Victor Espinoza. He's notorious for excessive whipping, there's a difference between using a whip to keep the horse concentrated like he did to Arrogate in the Classic than seeing Victor Espinoza multiple times beating a horse when it has zero chance to even make show.
I get a bit pissed when people try to compare Secretariat with Man o War they are both the greatest and they are both beyond words. BUT we saw the same greatness with this Arrogate! Wow! he made me a believer!
It was a slight jockey error on V Espinoza part. He held CC too long before asking him to go. By this time Arrogate was already in full stride and responded even more after Mike Smith switch his whip to his right hand. Great race with two champions.
Always be wary of any horse that comes to a race after breaking a track record.Chrome should of made more of the race in the early - mid stage as he was the best galloper and these jocks get too cocky in the driving seat expecting horses to work only in the end game.
garyoptica Chrome's connections have made some poor choices, they've let him coast to the finish of all his races this year rather than making him drive to the wire, they sent him to the front when the dirt favored off the pace and outside all weekend. They set slow fractions and counted on a horse wearing blinkers to know he had an oncoming monster. Had the Classic been run on the turf, their tactics might have made sense, on the dirt it was the height of foolishness. Arrogate is a beast of a colt, they should never have taken him for granted.
Espinoza waited to long before he went to work on California Chrome. It may or may not have changed the outcome but why did he wait for the grey to pull along side before even showing CC the whip and letting him know we need to get serious.
I was looking for a Chrome W just like most people but WOW what a hell of a race. Arrogate's crazy long stride was similar to Mor Spirit but with an excessive amount of stamina. Vic initially saw Arrogate coming on the inside so definitely caught him by surprise when Smith moved him to the outside and was already pumping on him. If Vic opened Chrome earlier I don't think Arrogate would have been able to catch him. Smith may have never went with the "right hand reminder" if Chrome was pulling away early. That put Arrogate into second gear. I hope they both run in the Pegasus!
I knew arrogate was so much that best horse if you look in there history times arrogate was 1to 2 seconds faster than California chrome and mike smith one off the best jockeys out there and smart rider🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎
Chrome is an incredible horse and has more heart than most I've ever seen run but I've always felt he's been overrated. Today he ran the best race I've ever seen him run and he simply got beat by a freakish competitor. What Arrogate did at Saratoga was spellbinding and today tracking down Chrome from the top of the stretch was no less impressive. Chrome's had a heck of a career; I don't quite put him in the class of an American Pharoah, but he's probably a solid top 30ish horse of all time.
I wouldn't even put Chrome in the top 50, or 75, tbh. He's a good horse, but it's taken him almost twice as long to accomplish what Curlin did.. And he hasn't even done that - he still has no BCC win.. That's just me, though.
oo ee That isn't really the point. Curlin within his 4 year old career: Preakness, 2nd in Belmont, BCC win, effortless DWC win, 2 JCGCs, Haskell, 4th in BCC. Became America's highest earner since Cigar. California Chrome within 5 years: Derby, Preakness, 4th in Belmont, 2nd in Dubai, year off, DWC, and then again lost the BCC. America's highest earner since Curlin. So, being said.. He's accomplished all the same as Curlin, but it's taken him only twice as long.. And yet he still cannot capture a BCC win. ...Earnings don't really speak volumes. Citation was the first, then Cigar, then Curlin, and now CC.
Omolatelae Coniah bullshit. Vic lost the race jacking around worring about other horses and waiting for arrogate. even when arrogate got close to him all vic had to do was float chrome out and make arrogate alter course.
I personally think Arrogate was better, his speed figures were higher than Chromes. This race was Chromes highest speed figure, he had to give everything he had to try and fight Arrogate off, but it wasn't enough. But hey we're all allowed to have our own opinions.
No excuse for CC losing. Arrogate was just the bigger monster today. Certainly clears up 3 year old colt of the year voting. Bigger question is horse of the year. Ironically, it seems either Songbird or Chrome are still the most logical contenders despite both of them losing their respective BC races.
Joseph Federico !Spectacular Race.. but to say no excuses is Wrong!! Arrogate had a 3 pound weight advantage, more Time off from Last Race and Less Traveling and Races...
You sound like Steve Coburn. Just because I said CC had no excuse doesn't mean he ran a bad race nor does it mean I think Arrogate is an overall better horse. It means nothing happened in the running of the race that adversely affected CC.
They both had dream trips, Arrogate just had the better day, and maybe he is even a little faster. CC is still the leading money earner and a brilliant horse, and this race still proves both of them are in a class of their own. They were several lengths before the rest of the field, after all. =)
Arrogate ran the same tactical as Shared Belief vs Chrome in the San Antonio 2015...and who rode Shared Belief?...and what was Baffert's instructions to Mike Smith? ...I think he said he would let Mike ride him however he saw fit...nobody's invincible...
Great race, and the gap between second and third suggests that Chrome ran a fine race too. I was wondering why Espinosa keep looking over his shoulder. Normally, this suggests the jockey thinks the race is over. It's an interesting point that he has geared down at the end of all of his races and perhaps that affected him. Or, more likely he just got beat by a great horse. Will be interesting to see a full season of Arrogate next year having the target on him. If he improves over the winter who knows what he might do. Some great performances this past weekend with two horses suffering their first loss of the season (or the first loss of their career).
As a Brit living in Thailand, I view all my racing on TH-cam, so I don't always know the background to many of these horses, so I have a question, if Arrogate is this good, how come he never ran in any of the Triple Crown Races? Was he a late developer? The weight for age allowance obviously made all the difference here. Would have been interesting to see Highland Reel in this race as well' instead of in the turf.
David Kent I can answer that! He was a late developer, and finally found his strides late this year. Honestly would've been scary to see what he could do in the triple crown...
David Kent He had problems with shin splints. That is why he is a late bloomer. Thing is? And most fans know? It always seems a late blooming 3yo makes noise. All these 3yo early in the spring for the triple crown hardly ever around at this time of year. Most retired or injured. Only one left in the Breeders Cup was GUN RUNNER and they ran in the dirt mile
3 year old colt crop was pretty bad this year in my opinion. Arrogate was a nice late addition though and Gun Runner has been fairly consistent and seems to be getting better. Not sure if I'm more disappointed at the rest of the 3 year olds or the fact that their owners think they've established enough on the track to retire them so early.
NADA SE COMPARA COM O TURF, AQUI NO BRASIL, TODOS SOMOS AMANTES FUTEBOL, ADMIRO O BOX, MAS NADA É MAIS EMPOLGANTE DO QUE UMA CHEGADA, CABEÇA A CABEÇA EM UM GRANDE PRÊMIO, EMOCÃO PROPORCIONADA SÓ PELO TURF.OBRIGADO
So yes, as I said, Arrogate would romp in the Pegasus World Cup. There is no competition between Arrogate and Chrome. Chrome looked absolutely finished from his losing effort in the Breeders Cup Classic. Arrogate is an all time great. I keep telling people.
Without trying to get anything away from the winner; but mike smith and arrogate won the race at the last turn, when he went inside to save ground enough to make the difference at the end.....
Amazing when a horse loses everyone blames the jockey..if Songbird and Chrome pull away at end and wire the fields everyone would say the jockeys gave them great ride..and we all KNOW this..but they both got caught at the wire so everyone blames the jockey...the Jockeys gave Chrome and Songbird great rides..they just got caught by 2 great horses
had not been reading comments here i would not see it .next time VE and CC will come back but i read the closes one is the Pegasus but arrogate has no place and must buy one from runner that willing to give place...
I’ll never get over how far these two great champions left the rest of the field behind. To this day, this is one of the greatest races ever and they were both spectacular on this day. Both monsters.
Two days before the 2019 Classic (10/31) I still watch this race and get chills every time . Two great horses produced a great race. As it should be.
A fresh 3 year old just doesn't do that, not what he's done so far.

yes very and consistent. sub 2.00 at saratoga NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE!!!! 2.00 FOR BCC, 1.46 FOR PWC AND LAST TO FIRST RUN AT DUBAI!!!!!
SkyPantherr American pharaoh 120 was a bit inflated in his last start
@Mauro Perdomo Probably so.
RIP to the successor of the legendary unbridled’s song sireline
sad ending to a mercurial climb and descent of an intriguing horse.
Hopefully his few crops of foals have something special in them
7 years later and i still get chills ❤ Arrogate turned on the after burners! Rest in peace champ
Arrogate steals the show indeed.
My favorite part of this race was when Victor looked to his right. He was shocked Arrogate was there.
I watch his races over and over and they never get old....
..Still coming :) like a formula 1
Shocked is laughable. He knew Arrogate would be coming just a question of when. He isn't stupid. They study each horse before a race.
Yes, good point (the harrow)! It wasn't the Santa Anita Drag Strip this weekend!
Zenaida Robbins I'm at a loss, where did you see some kind of excuse for Chrome's loss?
aj gensel I don't know who makes me more sick. Secretariat worshhippers or CC worshippers. Maybe I did not read the post correctly or in full.
Arrogate is a mystery. Is he really as good as he looked in onlly two races? What do you think?
I was 1/16 of a mile behind the finish line for this. I feel privileged to have witnessed such an enthralling finish to this amazing race.
How beautiful these Athletes must be in person huh.
Kevin Small
Hell of a run by both. No complaints necessary.
just read a spot on comment on bloodhorse. If Smith was on CC, he would have been looking forward..not backwards like Victor.
The back of my mind can't stop asking the question, "Is he sure his heart can take the thrill?"
cgarnet01
Smith beat that horse to a pulp...,shameful
i still give Chrome alot of credit. A great Horse. And now another great Horse, Arrogate takes over. I hope Arrogate runs next year and the next. For Chrome, its time to retire after a great career.
He is a good horse not great. That word is used too much. If he was a great horse he would have won the Belmont.
A turn up and those colours that carried so many great names like Dancing Brave, Frankel and Midday, the latter previous Breeders Cup winner amongst others.
Chrome danced every dance w/ class and consistency. Arrogate is like Gale Sayers - a lightning bolt that had a short but fantastic career.
Very few horses could have beaten Arrogate on this day.
I wonder what the official time was,,,he was flyin
amazing seeing ARROGATE lenghtening his STRIDE PAST CHROME!!!!!!!
"What a memorable breeders cup classic!"
"Pass on our admiration for California Chrome..."
And Mike Smith!
And the lovely Arrogate
reminds me of the stretch run of the 89 classic except easy goer's lengthening stride catches Sunday silence in 2016!
every time i watch this race im sad. effinex and arrogate already gone. what a great sire arrogate would have been! what a wonderful horse he was.
Arrogate was an amazing horse he would have produced so many amazing horses, he was only seven... r.i.p
Arrogate the best. Impressive especially after the Travers!
What I do know is Arrogate is a beast of a 3 year old beating a top older horse.
Norm V ARROGATE is a huge horse! I am going to assume once he got into gear very late with that long stride? It was why he won. Super talented
John Kaufmann the stamina he has like Smith said is incredible.
John Kaufmann dont forget the 3 pound advantage and more time off... but What a Race
oo ee Which is designed to make them equal, Arrogate dug down and found more, Chrome got caught flat footed.
AnnaNicolesDeathbed Arrogate is still a three year old and still maturing. Older horses are supposed to be better.
Arrogate also won 2017 Dubai WC, the way he did was so damn impressive, this horse is scary good..
Man, I had forgotten how awesome the Distaff and Classic were last year.
Really too bad AP retired after his 3-year old season. Can you imagine him in this field along with CC and Arro?
my god would that have been amazing BUT......if Mike Smith lets AP get away with these kind of fractions, AP wins by a few.
RIP arrowgate gone but not forgotten 🐴
You do realize even when a horse makes a run they are slowing down in the lane not speeding up?
FYI folks, this spectacular win by Arrogate was following an 84 day layoff in his 4 year old debut. Enough said.
LOL
You're absolutely right. I think Victor was overconfident.
Mike is cagey. Both horses ran their style of race. Mike just out maneuvered Victor.
Amen.
RIP Big A! One of the greatest of all time
I am so proud of arrogate he ran one hell of a race
Considering Arrogate was probably juiced to the eyes, a really remarkable performance by California Chrome.
Mike Smith could not have confused Victor any more. He outplayed him the entire race like a great poker player. What a brilliant big race jockey he is
That was a great race! I had to cheer for Victor and Chrome, but I'm happy for Baffert too. Congrats on a race well run, Arrogate!
It looked like a scene from a movie...Victor looked back in the wrong direction about 4 times and didn’t see Arrogate coming until it was too late.
Exactlty u know horse racing. Mike started working arrogreat from far turn
RIP Arrogate
Well said Gel B !
jetshockey5 what? Too late? C.C no is a good speeder in the strech... He won because take too much advantadge in the pace.
+Gel B "He has done so much for men"?? What the hell does that mean??
Yep, two three year old freaks in two years for Bob Baffert.
3 Breeder's Cup Classic wins in consecutive years, all with 3 year olds.
Lindsey Barnett thank you for this comment is for real. the one and only true...
Very true. Most times, CC just collapses when challenged.
Im so glad Arrogate won,he knocked Chrome off his Throne. That is one super fast 3 year old.He will be amazing next year as a 4 year old.💙
Dont eat your words, remember HOLY BULL, the racing gods dont care about ability, one bad step and he is just another BCC winner and nobody ever remembers. There is no 4 year old season until they run it, he is tained by baffert we dont know yet if he is the next beyern. chrome all time money earner thats saying something. that just 30 years of horse racing anecdotes empirically spoken.
I really hope he lasts. But Unbridled Songs often don't.
julie hertz Aarogate is only fast because of the excessive use of the crop.
Annaliese Eaton yes I know and he was fined. He was also riding Baffert, whom I don't care for. Baffert probably instructed him to be aggressive.
Still maybe the best race I very seen
I get a bit pissed when people try to compare Secretariat with Man o War they are both the greatest and they are both beyond words. BUT we saw the same greatness with this Arrogate! Wow! he made me a believer!
It was a slight jockey error on V Espinoza part. He held CC too long before asking him to go. By this time Arrogate was already in full stride and responded even more after Mike Smith switch his whip to his right hand. Great race with two champions.
Damn Arrogate is a beast.
3yo wins Fbi investigation
tubeyhamster MIKE SMITH
Arrogate is a beast of a colt, they should never have taken him for granted.
damn skippy.
Espinoza waited to long before he went to work on California Chrome. It may or may not have changed the outcome but why did he wait for the grey to pull along side before even showing CC the whip and letting him know we need to get serious.
Better jockey won the race ... Mike smith wow legend ... Credit trainer too bob wow
California Chrome didn't lose this BCC, Victor did.
Arrogate and mike smith,it's like before when Mike Smith was on the queen,Zenyatta during her Breeder cup classic race. all those years ago.
lavonna sanchez Remember when Mike Smith was aboard Shared Belief last year and went by him at 1 1/8...
I knew arrogate was so much that best horse if you look in there history times arrogate was 1to 2 seconds faster than California chrome and mike smith one off the best jockeys out there and smart rider🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎
Gears, and gears, and gears, and gears. This horse is a fucking monster and I love him. I cannot WAIT for the PWC and his upcoming year.
Impressive! The horse to beat in 2017!
RIP to a legendary talent. Gone way too soon. His son just won the Kentucky Derby 2024!
SkyPanther... Curlin didnt beat anybody Talented... Now Ghoszapper
oo ee That isn't really the point.
Victor has to Blame Mike because They rode the Exact Same Race
With Chrome and Sonbird
Omolatelae Coniah bullshit. Vic lost the race jacking around worring about other horses and waiting for arrogate. even when arrogate got close to him all vic had to do was float chrome out and make arrogate alter course.
Top 5 races I 've seen ARROGATE became a beast
Rest in peace, champ.
2018 and I still think California Chrome was a superior horse and far more consistent throughout his career.
I personally think Arrogate was better, his speed figures were higher than Chromes. This race was Chromes highest speed figure, he had to give everything he had to try and fight Arrogate off, but it wasn't enough. But hey we're all allowed to have our own opinions.
CC is stil a lucky horse competing with average candidates. Very lucky. Happy for the Arrrogate's team.
Veo las carreras de Arrogate y se me cae un lagrimón.
R.I.P. Arrogate.
David Kent he had shin problems as a 2 year old so they backed off him.
John Kaufmann so true
3 year old colt crop was pretty bad this year in my opinion. Arrogate was a nice late addition though and Gun Runner has been fairly consistent and seems to be getting better. Not sure if I'm more disappointed at the rest of the 3 year olds or the fact that their owners think they've established enough on the track to retire them so early.
When California Chrome changed leads, with the lead at the 2:01 mark....it felt like he should win (even in the replay).
Where the hell was the rest of the field?
VE & Chrome ran the perfect race to win. Didn't think VE did anything wrong at all. Arrogate just was the Better horse.
ARROGATE STEALS THE SHOW!!!!!! Love this horse!
NADA SE COMPARA COM O TURF, AQUI NO BRASIL, TODOS SOMOS AMANTES FUTEBOL,
ADMIRO O BOX, MAS NADA É MAIS EMPOLGANTE DO QUE UMA CHEGADA, CABEÇA A
CABEÇA EM UM GRANDE PRÊMIO, EMOCÃO PROPORCIONADA SÓ PELO TURF.OBRIGADO
So yes, as I said, Arrogate would romp in the Pegasus World Cup. There is no competition between Arrogate and Chrome. Chrome looked absolutely finished from his losing effort in the Breeders Cup Classic.
Arrogate is an all time great. I keep telling people.
This announcer is very good voice and impressed.
Without trying to get anything away from the winner; but mike smith and arrogate won the race at the last turn, when he went inside to save ground enough to make the difference at the end.....
Why did Espinoza switch whip so close to the finish.
Cause he fell asleep
Switch halfway down and he keeps his lead
love the commentator at the end.... So excited it was like it was his horse!
Big mistake by Espinoza looking back for Arrogate he had to ride his mount not looking back
I wonder if Arrogate wins this race with the new Whip Rules in place ???
Amazing when a horse loses everyone blames the jockey..if Songbird and Chrome pull away at end and wire the fields everyone would say the jockeys gave them great ride..and we all KNOW this..but they both got caught at the wire so everyone blames the jockey...the Jockeys gave Chrome and Songbird great rides..they just got caught by 2 great horses
Arrogate didn’t “steal the show”. It was his to begin with.
had not been reading comments here i would not see it .next time VE and CC will come back but i read the closes one is the Pegasus but arrogate has no place and must buy one from runner that willing to give place...
Legendary call from Larry
ARROGATE STEALS THE SHOW!!! Great race & great call
California Chrome had this race won until Mike Smith switched his whip to his right hand.
