  • I discuss the detection of gravitational waves with my wife, Lianne.
A very exciting development for this video: Someone has asked if they can add subtitles! No one has ever asked to do this for a video of mine before.
So now, thanks to the wonderful Ger Hanssen, this video is more accessible. Just turn on Closed Captions to see his great work.

It is a nice format, I really like learning through discussions, and a video like this is the closest I can get to do a live discussion with someone who understands the topic. It was also nice because your girlfriend (wife?) keeps asking some good questions that help investigate the topic.

Another important thing you two (sorry, three) left out in the video is the fact that this massive black hole collision "event" was actually measured in the electromagnetic field at the same time too so not only could they compare both LIGO's interferometers measurements to get rid of the background noise but actually they could trace these gravitational waves to the time points where they were expected taking into account that elctromagnetic events happened first and the graviational waves "followed" them in the chain of events. Anyway, great video! Loved it :)

6:08 - "another way" being the _right_ way. the way some textbooks still talk about things "creating an electric field", as if the field is attached to that thing and extends only to a defined distance (instead of the object creating a _disturbance_ that fades exponentially with distance but extends infinitely across a field that is essentially a property of space - ignoring planck scale rounding errors in this simulation we call reality, anyway ;) is responsible for much of the difficulty some people have with electrodynamics. also, excessively long sentences.

Nice, I had this SAME conversation with my wife 2 days ago. Its hard to tell when people REALLY ACTUALLY understand things the exact way you do. Maybe no one can understand the things you do, THE WAY you do... I wish I could get the WAY I understand things- ie through this web, or network of supporting ideas that all fit together like a puzzle (literally hundreds of concepts).... Maybe you just have to explain everything in the universe to TRULY explain one 'simple' thing.... (not that I do... there's probably loads of people out there that understand the universe 'better' than I do through their way of properly understanding every concept in more detail and their understanding of all the concepts correspond much better to reality that the way I think about things.) Really cool video by the way. I learned something.
