- Indonesia is building more dams to address food and water security concerns in the country. Its Public Works and Housing Ministry has a target to build a total of 61 dams by the end of this year. These dams also provide low-carbon hydroelectric power, contributing to the clean and renewable energy mix in Indonesia. Saifulbahri Ismail reports.
Damn that's a lot Dams
goddam right!
Not really. Just counting the large dams, there are 411 large dams under construction in India right now. Total 5334 large dams already exist. And even this total of 5745 large dams is not considered enough for us Indians. It is said that we need twice as many and we will take another 20 years of non-stop dam building to get to that point. By that time, our older dams will need to be rebuilt, so the process of building dams will continue even after 2050.
USA has 10,000 dams and China has 24,000 dams, for comparison. All data is from International Commission on Large Dams.

Indonesia is the next growth industry partner. Singapore might even import clean renewable energy from Indonesia.
Singapore should support education for Indonesia as it had been in limbo for 34 years. A Win-Win situation.
Maybe. We have the world's largest geothermal power plant but... Our domestic needs still took its focus.

Malaysia’s Sarawak state aims to provide up to one gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy to Singapore by 2032, with negotiations to supply the electricity via submarine cables now at an advanced stage, according to Sarawak state energy unit Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB).
The 1GW of energy, mainly in the form of hydropower, represents up to a quarter of Singapore’s low-carbon electricity import target by 2035.
Singapore aims to import 4GW of low-carbon electricity, including renewable energy, by 2035 to meet about 30 per cent of its power needs.
SEB is spearheading the negotiations with a consortium led by Singapore’s Sembcorp Industries. The parties are working towards a power exchange agreement, and are finalising the technical and commercial terms for the export of energy, said SEB group chief operating officer James Ung Sing Kwong.
The deal has been under negotiation for more than three years, he said.
Higher costs and power losses during transmission over the 700km distance to Singapore were not a concern because of new submarine cable technology, Mr Ung told The Straits Times in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the Sustainability & Renewable Energy Forum (Saref 3.0) at the Borneo Convention Centre in Kuching, Sarawak, on Thursday.
Held on Wednesday and Thursday, the forum’s theme, “Regional Net Zero and Sustainable Communities, Renewable Energy Development and Interconnections”, focuses on regional net-zero initiatives, as well as green energy development and solutions.
Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg told ST that high-voltage direct-current submarine cables minimise the volume and cost of transmission losses.
Mr Ung said: “The feasibility study (has been) completed and the findings of our technical studies on cables show this is workable. Commercial negotiations are ongoing, and we are working towards the power exchange agreement, which will be a two-way exchange of power between both countries as well.
“From the Sarawak side, we need to get sufficient power ready for Singapore, and we have to strengthen transmission lines on land to supply the energy. Singapore will be responsible to build the 700km submarine cables from Sarawak to the city-state to supply the energy, which could take around six to seven years.”
The final structure of the submarine cable company has not been finalised, but it would be led by a Singapore company, he added.
A similar power link already exists in Europe. The North Sea Link between Norway and Britain stretches more than 720km in the North Sea.
SEB, along with Sembcorp Industries and Singapore Power Group, have completed technical studies on the cables linking Borneo to Singapore, Tan Sri Abang Johari told the conference on Wednesday.
indonesia needs 1000 dam for the next 25 years
I mean, during the Jokowi's presidency in 10 years he managed to build 61 dam and no other Indonesia's president has achieve that kind of feat. I think for the next 25 years, we would only able to build 100-150 more dam. As of now, we have 292 dam in Indonesia and if we're able to build 100-150 more dam for the next 25 years, we would only have 400-450 dams.
Jumlah Bendungan Besar Di Indonesia mencapai sekitar 292,
Dan Target selesai di 2024 adalah 300 Bendungan Besar...

Very smart. Here in Brazil, hydroelectric plants provide more than half of our energy.
Bit weird. Brazil has 1200 large dams while India has 5500 large dams. Yet Brazil gets >50% of its electricity from dams while India only gets around 12.5%. I guess it is down to the number of people we have?

It only counts large dams, not smaller ones. Which is why the numbers might appear low to you. But the data is accurate as each country provides its own data.

Indonesia needs to start doing floating rice planting at river or lake, just like what China did to ensure the food security
Why, there is still a lot of empty land in Indonesia, they are planting in the sea because there is no empty land
@@faridjr4625 No we don't have enough land, if we want more lands we need to cutting down the trees and destroying the forest, which is not good for our forest biodiversity, environment, etc. And also not every soil in our country is fertile, only some islands that have a soil that can be planted with rice like Java, Sumatra, Bali.
We need to learn the technology to cultivate floating rice at river/lake, so we're not depending to create more lands in order to start planting rice, so that we would ensure our food security.
