returning player here, from starry eyed 9-year old who couldn't fathom paying for an online game, to a burntout 22 year-old college student who can finally afford a dragon amulet. i have so many opinions on this game and am very confused why more people don't talk about this game. i mean club penguin was iconic so i assumed dragonfable would have a similar degree of discourse.
i will say one thing though: this game grew up with me. the same way i (and many returning players) grew older and experienced playing the game as a 9 year old then immediately experiencing it a young adult, the game itself seemed like it grew up. same characters (some new ones), same world, but things kinda... grew up. i won't spoil any part of the overarching story for anyone, but i can at least confirm that the tone shift was a wonderful surprise.
and that's great! if i returned to the game and it were still the same dragonfable built on cute puns, linear storylines, and 2d (in every sense of the word) characters, i would play it for 10 minutes just to satisfy my nostalgia, then leave. and while that game is and will forever remain precious to me, it is not that anymore. it grew up the same way we did: small indistinguishable changes every week. more than a decade later, the result is something engrossing, timely, and well-written, all without resorting to cheap tricks that lesser writers would employ in order to make their work seem more "grown up", like introducing unnecessary s3x and violence.
i strongly urge all older players to replay the game.

I went back to the game ~2015, and have played on and off since to catch up on story, Book 3 has really felt spectacular given what the game is, it doesn't completely remove the goofy, punny jokes or anything, but the content of the newer storylines and characters really do feel like they've matured as the game went on

Compared to Adventure Quest, I think Dragonfable struck gold with a dedicated team that not only keeps pumping new content on a strict schedule but also dedicate their time and passion to keep the game updated and consistent. I recently watched a video replaying AQ from scratch and... man the game is MESSY! It's a lovable mess, but still confusing, inconsistent and somewhat scatterbrained. Dragonfable lead us with a timeline quite easy to follow, is always updating old content to match the new and the storyline certaintly progressed in maturity without losing the comedic edge.

  • @audaciousfalcon7981
    @audaciousfalcon7981 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

I remember this game from back in the day. So many good memories. I remember finishing everything there was in the game at the time and always coming back weekly to do the new content. At some point I stopped coming back. I think I stopped playing after the end of the Orb Saga.
Multiple years later I just randomly remembered the game and came back to it once more, but there was just so much more content I didn't know where to begin, so I stopped and told myself "Maybe I'll play it later when I have more time."
Now, years later, perhaps it's time for me to log in once again and see what is new. I certainly loved it so much when I was younger and the thrilling storyline kept me engaged.

As somebody who decided to revisit DragonFable around the time this video came and got immediately hooked again, just like I did when I first played as a kid, there's just something really special about this game and it's not just nostalgia. While all its flaws and outdated parts are really obvious and so upfront you can't ignore, there's also a great world and often even a really intriguing story shining through all of it. And while the early parts are really dated, it really did grow up just like we did, while still retaining its identity.
It's also one of the most creative fantasy worlds (even if it's sometimes by sheer size) that upon revisiting the game I realised it ruined most of fantasy for me, for not being as interesting.
Also, a small factoid I'd like to add to the video is a specific shoutout to the Dragonfable team, who as far as I know actually operate fairly autonomously from the rest of ArtixEntertainment, mainly the lead writer Verlyrus, and the creative lead Dove (also known as Tomix), who maintain the world and of course everyone else involved.

    • @slow_start

Literally grew up on games from 97-2010ish and adventure quest was totally one I found by accident. In school before schools knew what to do about kids playing games online we all went to puff games and shockwave and played the street racing game, skull kid which definitely referenced popping a cap in busch, rag doll, and early 2000’s before schools banned “new” RuneScape we’d play when we could. Hell there was even a hot wheels drag race game that was badassss

    another adventure quest for
mobile and ill be hooked. ive actually tried to play it on my phone….. to no avail.
maybe i should just make my own adventure quest style game, with pvp and all for mobile.

I don’t like the mobile game, I join for MechQuest but I like the click game style, I hope they bring that game style to mobile for MechQuest and don’t change it just make it mobile.

I hate how it always resets your class and they never fixed that :(. Also, if they can develop content, I wish they would fix some bugs but I know that’s too much to ask 😭. I wish dragon fable and mech quest were ported to a new engine or the mobile sphere as remastered versions and they pour their heart and soul back into it but it would require a lot of funds.

That's the problem - everything involves money, and I don't think Artix is a very rich company. Great points though, I hope their games see a resurgence one day.

Fr, I bought and amulet and guardian for my favorite trilogy AQ, DF, and MQ. I can’t wait to delve back into lore and support! It’s so amazing how they took flash beyond its capabilities. I wish that in itself gave them what they needed to grow. What they made back then would be amazing mobile games now. I just want them to upgrade to the future already but who knows.

@slow #slow 04.56 - 05.43 Why is it a bad thing that they try to make you bye a one time pay thing when it is a free to play game? That makes no sense.
10.09 - 10.23 I would say that the Adventure Quest Classic gameplay can be quite difficult too and sometimes one has to be more stratigic about your fight(at least if one is fighting somewhat harder than normal enemies).
10.35 - 11.00 I think you did some spesific quests where there are very little varaity in monsters, because I have had alot more varaity in the enemies I have fought in the quests I have done then what you showed on screen there.
11.00 - 11.14 Why would one be left wanting more the gameplay is good enough on it's own.
11.14 - 11.27 Why would it be a surprise that normal enemies are not really that hard? From what I have heard the later story bosses are somewhat challenging. I don't think you got far enough into the story to meet those bosses.
12.56 - 13.05 Why would every road between different places need to have content? It is mainly a whay to get from point a to point b. Why does the combat stryggle to sustain your interest? And even if it does, that is not an argument that the game is dated, it just meanes that you spesificly don't find it fun.

I dont recomment this game since they are fixing all the cheats and banning all the people even though it is a SP game. People already spent 200+ even 300 USDs in this game and developers return their favor via banning supporters of the game.
