I just wanna say I was so disappointed with how watered down Spectra is in the webseries. I loved her gossipy “don’t give a damn” personality in her profile and profile
Spectra fluctuated for me; sometimes she was interesting, sometimes she was annoying, and her spectral voice kinda threw things in the latter direction.
Definitely seems they wanted to make her nicer and part of the main ghouls but thankfully they gave us Toralai and Nefera. I believe she's made to be nicer in the same way as she probably lets out her frustration through writing and let's herself be more vile while on gossip mode, but she probably doesn't mean as much harm due to shyness that was established.
For the humans not being showed as much in the settings, i always thought of it as monsters and humans being strongly segregated. Like there's a monster part of cities and a human part.
I feel like that's what they were going for, but it all becomes very bizarre whenever I stop and think about it. If Boo York and New York were sharing the same territory, I feel like they'd easily discover each other as it's hard to hide a city in plain sight. The explanation I've heard that makes the most sense for me is that the monster and human worlds are separate dimensions that connect sometimes.
@@Boogeyman4511during Ghouls Rules Lilith questions why the monsters are on their side of town so the idea of monster and humans being in segregated parts of the cities makes sense. Just have to imagine the cities are reeeeeeally big to allow both populations to have their own landmarks and everything
The contradictions that confuse me the most in the MH franchise are about Jackson and Holt honestly.. Like for example, on the doll's box, it says Jackson is the son of Dr. and Ms. Jekyll, but in his diary (and maybe Lisi Harrisson's book?? idk I haven't read it yet) the Jekyll/Hyde thing comes from his mom's side of the family and his father is a fire elemental. I personnally assume that Dr. Jekyll is probably his grandfather or great grandfather. Also, in all MH medias except Lisi Harrisson's book, his transformation into Holt is triggered by music, in the book it's triggered by heat. Anyways, very cool video!!
Taking into consideration monster high is, first and foremost, a doll line, I think it is safe to say the diaries are the "most canon" media we have. Through the diaries, the designers were closely involved with the stories about the characters they created (at least most of them, since we eventually got dolls that came from the webisodes). I guess you could say the same about the movies but I still feel like they had more authonomy with the diaries!
I love the books as details to the world. It's all that they do to me, but they aren't as fun. Great video! Also maybe the newer stuff is just a secret G4 😂
Definitely prefer Gen 1's canon. Always hated how Gens 2-3 always swtiched up Clawdeen's family and Gen 2 had main character syndrome by having the girls make MH instead of it being a longstanding school.
When I saw this video I was so delighted, ever video you create always feels full and informs me on things I might not know in monster high, I have always wondered why all the Lore and canon is separated into a non consistent story. I know this was a hard video to create because the canon is messy
What a fun video! I love discussing all of the different MH media...my ghoulness is there a lot of it. Also, I love that you encouraged everyone to read the diaries! They are genuinely so fascinating and soooooo much of the lore is hidden in those things! Oh and about the Lisi Harrison books, I'd definitely say if you don't *want* to read them, don't, but if you ever do feel like it and you go into it with the knowledge that they will be NOTHING like any of the other MH media...they're extremely entertaining, in the absolutely bizarre way. I do not like those books. But I do have fun reading them. 🤣 Keep up the fangtastic work! 💗🤣
@Boogeyman4511 Omg I didn't even realize you'd seen my videos! Thank you so much 🩷 I've been meaning to watch yours forever but I always get distracted lmao 🤣 definitely going to watch more later though!!
I was always bothered by the fact of lagoona’s “stage fright” even when the movie came out I think I was 10? Even then it bothered the hell out of me watching the movie remembering the webisodes 😒
Tbh I really liked the book about Venus, Rochelle and Robecca even if they are often incoherent with the main canon . The last two are among my favourite characters and I enjoyed reading Venus having a personality instead of just being the ecology activist girl background character for once, I mean even in Freaky Fusion where she's part of the main cast she still is not very developed compared to the others (only cool thing was showing more of her plant powers) and I loved her design as someone who used to collect the dolls in her teens, so I was disappointed to always see her being a background character in the movies and not having an actual personality outside of protecting the planet (and yes it's an important message but it's the same issue as making your gay character's only personality trait being gay. It doesn't make them compelling,it's just an aspect of them but doesn't entirely define a person). How did they manage to make a poison-ivy like character with a punk style boring in the webisodes and movies ?!
Monster high canon can be pretty inconsistent. From diaries, web series and movies. Granted I always separated them as their own thing for my sanity lol Also anyone remember the books? All monster had to live among humans and hide their features?
Remember When toralei Sent everyone back in time in freaky fusion toralei made a new timeline If you're A legend of Zelda fan, you'll understand So everything After 2014 Can be on a different time line Making some events Play out differently
There’s a lot of funny contradictions that bring up fearious questions. This franchise has been my genuine specialty interest since Oct 2010 so I know about all of them. One big one a lot of people don’t tend to mention is that the school itself was over 2,000 years old until freaky fusion where it’s retconned to be only 200 years old. This is important because it doesn’t just contradict the old volume 1 webisodes, but how do ghouls fall in love itself. As Draculaura herself states she was at her OLD school “over 400 years ago”, which to me implies she likely has been at monster high itself for around 400 years. To me this was kind of a lagoonas sudden stage fright level of blunder haha. G1 of monster high really can only be enjoyed to its fullest when you just accept that there isn’t a linear timeline much at all, there’s always some other detail in G1 that contradicts itself somewhere
Friday the 13th and Halloween happening on the same day is another contradiction lol. I’ve always just pretended it was different dimensions overlapping.
I think that what has to be considered canon in Monster High should be the cartoon continuity because the first basic dolls were released in early july 2010 and the first cartoon webisodes were released between May 5th and july 30th 2010
I remember years ago when the Great Scarrier Reef came out, I watched it and was like it’s as if the events in Escape frim Skull Shores never happened 💀
Great video and agree with you on all the continuities and plot holes. The first volumes and the early diaries are probably in the same continuity to an extent and it can be explained by it being monster high establishing itself for the first time and not having a specific time line or canon events at the time. Volume 2, the movies and any subsequent diaries are probably same continuity. I absolutely hate the continuity following the twice dead book and the comics, they seem more like edgy fanfics and they write the characters completely different than what they're trying to continue from. And adding g3 elements makes more plot holes as well as including characters from other gens or even including characters that are not even around anymore in it's own continuity. They referenced Moanica from g2 and at the end of the book they implied normies are banned from monster high with some sort of magic but in the comics Jackson is seen at the school in his human form. The comics promised to continue g1 but it seems to be handled by people that didn't know the bare minimum about it. Also great video and would love to see a longer one about the diaries and the books.
Something that doesnt make sense to me is in friday night frights ghoulia builds robecca steam and her heart was LITERALLY shown when they have a whole movie (frights camera action) were robeccas heart was the vampires heart and it was supposed to be lost like what?
1:21 maybe i Will be wrong, but what if It isn't a contradiction? What if " why do ghouls fall in love" take place shortly after the episode " party planners"?
I want to add the fact that the dolls of this franchise resemble more the characters in movies than the characters in webisodes. for example, I noticed that Operetta( daughter of the Phantom of the opera) in the webisodes has blue skin similar to Abbey Bominable, purple eyes and purple eyeshadow, while in the movies she has lilac skin, grey eyes and orange/yellow eyeshadow. Why????
Operetta has lilac skin in all versions, her eyes are grayish purple on doll and artwork but do lean more purple in the webisodes and grey in the movies, and the doll has yellow and pink makeup where as you pointed out the web has pink and the movie has yellow. Probably just different teams adapting the doll design differently
summing up modern canon: The writers of the new books / comics didn't do their work watching any of the movies and went with very basic information about the characters. (Which is kinda conflicting as a writer, you must do all your research before diving into a project) Monster High should've just said it was a new storyline lol
The author of the majority of the MH comics has actually been an MH fan for a while! As is the artist. It's not that they didn't do their research, it's just that they're in a different continuity. People will definitely agree or disagree with the choice to make it that, but the idea that the author and illustrator aren't MH fans is untrue. /lh /nm Honestly I think Mattel is the one who fumbled with the marketing, because they kept pushing them as the OG MH when in reality they were never intended to be that.
