      @@AK-ms5zk ya 100% not just the motors either… the fish finders will scare the fish too. Especially the white sea bass. The sonar transducers are actually pretty loud underwater, and when there’s lots of boats around it can make a difference to get away from the fleet.

I’ve been kayaking a year now and still in the hunt. Just gotta get better at landing. I’ve flipped twice and still learning. Any tips on how to get better? Thanks Chris

    • @chrisblevinsfishing
      @chrisblevinsfishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Surf wise its just practice. Try going down to the launch and going in and out with no gear. Landing is the hardest part. Practice "timing the sets" and after the set comes through, try to sprint in on the back of one of the small waves after a set.

    Great stuff! Could you go into some detail about how much drag you put on a fish? The standard advice is 25-30% of line strength. I hear you talk about using heavy drag and a lot of pressure to keep away from structure and lobster pot lines. Are you going up quite a bit past that? What would you say you get up to on your standard setup (65lb braid with 40lb fluoro/mono topshot)?

Now if only I can convince you to let me know when you might be going out for yellowtail in June, I can give you $200 for your travel expenses and you kinda just keep an eye out for me to make sure I don’t do anything unsafe. Not asking for guide service since you don’t have a license, but just pay you for travel expenses to go out fishing and watching out over a newbie. 😉

    What’s up Chris, really appreciative of your videos. Question: I live near Ventura, and fish around from Long Beach and up through Goleta. I assume the water is a few degrees colder than up south in Lj, is there any possibility to get yellowtail this time of year local to me? I can’t seem to find them, I follow birds, follow the bait, but I don’t know where to look. I’m newer to kayaking, starting last year, nearly using the same gear as you, even fish the same kayak. Hoping to get my first yellowtail this year, just don’t want to make the 3 hour trip to Lj to get it. Thank you again for the content!

      What’s up Reelest Fisherman. I don’t think is about the temperature as much as the overall ecology and bathymetry. Anywhere that you have a deep underwater canyon where kelp beds are near deep water the yt can be there. Obviously the Channel Islands are probably your best shot up there. But there are other spots. I won’t give up spot names since they are not my spots but look for submarine canyons and rocky reefs.

    Nice yellowtail bro, regarding the fish finders, I am using an Elite FS 9 with the active imagine 3-in-1, this is a nice combo, has the 83/200 for 2d sonar, it also have downscan, I don't use to often the sidescan, probably when I am looking for bait, and when I am fishing on freshwater, I do also have the hds-7 carbon, however, is too much for a kayak, I would say if you are fishing up to 1000ft any elite sonar with the 83/200 is enough, not worth to spend too much if you are fishing from a kayak. Chris hoepfully we can meet this year bro, glad to see new videos from you. Cheers!

    Hey Chris, thanks for all you do. I have a question I'd like an honest answer to. Would I be able to get a yellowtail up with a low budget rod and reel. For example I have a 7' rod that says it has a 10 to 30 lb line capacity, and the strike force reel has data on the side of it for 10 and 12 lb line. Anyways I have been filling it with either 40-50 lb line or sometimes 50 lb braid cause I can fit more of it on there. I just don't have the money to buy the fancy stuff but I am hooked on kayak fishing.

    • @johnsawer2153
      @johnsawer2153 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you will not get that yellowtail up with that set up. It will spool you. You could maybe get one 15lbs or less on that set up, but you would have to have drag set perfectly and it would take a while to get it up. Which increases chance of a sea lion taking it from you.
