In 1999 Ferry Corsten and Vincent de Moor teamed up for "Carte Blanche"; a massive trance classic which they released as "Veracocha".
I recently sat down with Ferry, in his brand new studio, to ask him about the story behind "Carte Blanche" and more! You will hear how he and Vincent de Moor got to meet each other, what happened in the studio, why there hasn't been a follow up for "Carte Blanche" and more...
Furthermore Ferry tells us more about his "What The F" - concept, the brand new downtempo album "As Above So Below", which he just released as "Ferr", his UNITY project and .... will there be a new Gouryella this year?
Enjoy and thanks for watching!

Thanks for the interview! Hope you all enjoy the new Ferr album 'As Above So Below' which I just released. Stay safe guys!
And thank you once again for your time Ferry! Good luck with the album release and all exciting new plans!!
Love the sounds on this album very mellow....I love it ....stay safe Ferry
Keep making what you love and your true fans will continue to follow. So many artists sell out for the numbers and end up creating stuff they don't even like just to appeal to the mainstream. Life is too short for that. Enjoy what you do and what you create. That's where the true value is.
So sad I'm going to miss your WTF show in Houston at the end of this month. Oh well, hope to see you soon Ferry! Cheers
'Veracocha' and 'As Above So Below', I reckon Ferry must be into Graham Hancock.
Carte Blanche= definition of what trance sound and is like. The best trance song ever.
I agree. Original sound of trance
FACTOS
First time I heard it, I cried. The pinnacle of what trance should be That piano breakdown says it all without saying very much.
That's how Trance is supposed to make you feel!
Ferry to his JP:
"shall we make some magic again, my friend?" 😂
Haha that was cool huh? ;-)
Ferry should use the JP 8000 for his future Gouryella productions.
Love my jv1080 fantastic piano sounds
I still regret selling my JP like 20 years ago 😢
The moment Ferry mentiones he's working on a new Gouryella... YES!
Can't wait!
Besides his music you got to love the fact he is such a down to earth and nice guy.
Oh yes he is!
a role model in the industry, for sure!
Its not a track ... Its a HYMN!!
"Out Of The Blue" and "Carte Blanche", the two seminal trance masterpieces which lifted the genre to a level never surpassed after!! The first time I heard each of them on the radio those were eargasms I will remember for the rest of my life. Ferry is and will always be the absolute god of trance!!! 👊🏼
Keep up the good work, Twan! 👍🏻👍🏻
Groeten uit België! 😉
Hi Quadran2000, I totally agree with what you said about Ferry. Because I absolutely love his music, and I feel very lucky to have him as an amazing friend in my life.
By the way, if you’re interested in getting to know me, please feel free to reply to my comment and check out my channel. I always love meeting other fans of him and anyone who loves trance music.
Although I am a fan of Ferry (he even made a few Drum n Bass songs under SkyWalker), there are a few names that pretty much co-excist besides him in awesomeness. Art of Trance, Union Jack, Binary Finary, Brian Transeau, Chicane...
did you ever listen to trance before this? somehow im skeptical.
Khlotho Stonney Yes! My knowledge of trance music goes back to 1976 when the (in my eyes) ultimate godfather of trance music, Jean-Michel Jarre, released Oxygène 😉 But 'trance as we know it' I enjoyed from the early 90's: The Age Of Love, Humate - Love Stimulation (Paul Van Dyk Remix), Cosmic Baby, Sven Väth...
@@Quadran2000 Hmm, I get your point btw concerning the synthesizer tracks - though I wouldn't ignore the acid-house that slowly transformed into trance, if not goa-trance around '88-'90's :)
One of the best trance tracks of all time for sure.
Even many years have passed, the legendary "Carte Blanche" remains the absolute Queen of Trance classics and describing it is something unique that only true passionate of genre know the rarity of this incredible historical piece, #classictranceforever
Vincent De Moor has a history of incredible melodies, I’m guessing that part was his contribution.
gavsmith1980 - Oddly enough, I think Ferry was the mastermind behind the actual main riff. We’ll soon find out.
Indeed, it was Ferry, as mentioned around 3:00 in the video :)
Sounds like VDM was the one who chose it.
Ferry was just mucking about with random notes and VDM said, “stop, play those last notes again...”
Or we just call it a collaboration. It wouldn't be there without input from either one of them. Btw, I love these 2 tracks from vdm, 'Fly away' and 'Sunflowers'. Both on 'The Additional Works'
It's almost like they BOTH worked on the track ffs
Brilliant story, The golden years of trance will never be defeated still as mind blowing today was it was back then
Glad you enjoyed the interview! BTW, I did 2 more interviews with Ferry, one about "Out Of The Blue" and one about "Gouryella". Thanks for the comment!! :)
We gotta protect Ferry Corsten at all costs ♥️🙏
Carte Blanche is the holy grail. It will remain untouchable till the end of time. It will be pulles out of a treasured pile in a thousand years and that generation will bow to its superiority and marvel at the discovery of a mastsrpiece. Thanks for this muzikxpress.
Thanks so much!!
I love how Ferry Corsten is always happy to do a interview with muzikxpress
haha, me too ;-) Let's see if I can ask him again in 2021 ;-)
@@muzikxpress that will be awesome
@@muzikxpress You have to ask him about his Drum n Bass tracks under the name SkyWalker :P
TheTekknician I always focus on big hits / classics, these vlogs take a lot of time, so I want as much people as possible to watch them. And that doesn’t happen when I pick lesser known tracks 😉
@@muzikxpress I get it, but you can always ask about it, off the record hehe - it's a thing not everybody knows about :)
Vincent de moor is my hero! He inspired me to make trance music myself
Vincent de Moor Fly Away is probably his best track.
Flowtation is very close or imo his best
VDM - Domino Runner. Another classic from Vincent.
What about Vincent De Moors Other Track “Emotions” it’s really good!
no hesitation is my favourite
One of the best trance tracks ever in my opinion and still is!!
🙏🏻
This is amazing stuff. I'm born in 1984, in Portugal. I remember listening to Carte Blanche for the first time on satellite TV, I think it was VIVA channel - a german one. It sounded so good and futuristic - it was mind-blowing. I guess I did not realize how truly special it was for many many years. But then the internet was a thing and here and there I kept seeing mentions of it, so many different people remembering the same kind of experience I had. It's late 2023 now, this track still pulls me way deep into my soul, it's amazing how it can do that - but then again people still enjoy Vivaldi and Mozart, etc. Cheers and thank you so much for this.
🙏🏻
True classic, Ferry was on another level when he was making them trance masterpieces. Legend. Great interview Twann 👍
Carte Blanche one of the best trance classics ever, what a tune!
Ferry Corsten : A very intelligent & creative man. "Trance Forever" Thankyou sir. 👍
Still my ringtone since it got out❤️
Haha good choice!
It's my ringtone too😆👌🏻
I remember when Ferry Corsten played in my hometown around 1998/1999. This was in Norway. I smoked at that time and asked him when he was DJ’ing if he could sign my pack of Marlboro. I was a big fan of him then and still am after all these years. Unfortunately I lost my cigarette pack with the signature of Ferry. Was lost during a home party or something. 90s trance was the best. 😊 Great interview. Ferry seems such a nice person you just want to hang around. 😊
Thank you! Early June a new interview with Ferry will be online btw 😉
He is amazing and much respected.
A lot of us would like to see a UNITY collab with Armin Van Buuren.
Thymios Mantzaras they did 4 collabs before already, so who knows 😉
@@muzikxpress I can smell it in the air Twan 😉😎

Absolutely great DJ, what can I say, Holland is the home of the best world DJ's 🙌
Ferry Corsten : LEGEND !!!!
Keep tranceforming the world !!!!
One of the most beautiful tracks of Ferry Corsten,so beautiful a real trance Ballade 🥰💽🎶🎶🎶
Lovely interview! How I wish Vincent would’ve never vanished, such a genius producer.
Thanks Gustavo! And same.... I would love to sit down with him to talk with him about 1 of his classics!
Vincent de moor left music but his music was remember forever he was really talented producer. Thx for view
Shamu, flowers incredible
Tenth Planet - Ghosts VDM mixes - Pop Trance cover BOMB! Nothing like it, instantly takes me back in time to 2001.
Nothing can surpass that track ever since
This track has been in my "Absolute Best" playlist for years and years, have heard it more times than I've heard my own name, and it STILL gives me goosebumps. An undeniably timeless track that works not only because of the stellar production but also because that melody is just perfect! Many tracks come close but I don't think I've ever heard anything that surpasses this gem.
Such a tune right????
These interviews are incredible! 🙌🏻
Thank you so much! Have a few more lined up ;-)
Carte Blanche and Out Of The Blue 2 of my absolute favourite Trance tracks 👌🏼 Ferry is the best
Ferry corsten aka moonman , system f , ferr , gouryella ,(with old tiesto) , veracocha (with vincent de moor) , albion , vimana , thank you great music
Back when i was 11 years old, i had recorded the videoclip of System F's Dance Valley theme 2001 on VHS and played it over and over again. There was no doubt that i was going to love all music composed by him. It's only later that i discovered tha name "Veracocha" and it took many more years to realize Ferry Corsten is also one of the masterminds behind their "Carte Blanche" track.
It's been about 19 years since i first heard one of his tracks and my opinion hasn't changed. Thanks, Ferry and Vincent! Thanks Twan! Best of luck in life!
En zo zijn er nog talloze trance artiesten waar ik eenzelfde verhaal over heb. Stuk voor stuk passeren ze op dit kanaal, 't is alsof ik allemaal oude vrienden terug leer kennen.
I have dance valley theme on vinyl 🔥🔥🔥🎶
This channel is still masterpiece of TH-cam.
rocko44444444 wow, thank you so much!
Man this song is just magestic and epic you can really feel that it came from the heart specially with this kinda melodic "question and answer",i've heard it in Viva back in the days and it still is in my every tracklisting. It's just an intemporal glory !!
THANK YOU FERRY FOR THIS GEM !!
I'm glad to see that Ferry still holds a special place in his heart for his past stuff.
Sometimes I get the impression; I might be wrong, that some producers move on and they really just move on.
Forgetting what took them there in the first place.
It feels a bit like: There's the past producer A and the present producer A and that they are not the same person despite aliases and names and stuff.
It's good to move on and it's healthy, you can't stick to the same thing forever it can be very miserable.
However, I find it good to look back sometimes, there's always good things to remember from the past and I'm glad to see Ferry hasn't forgotten about them.
Well said!
Ferry seems to be such a nice guy and I’ve been listening a lot to this track as well. Very interesting interview to hear of how this track was created and documented in history for listeners in the future
Ferry is great! Glad you enjoued the video, more to come soon!
Hearing Ferry play this live during his What The F tour was one of the best experiences ever
Great interview - just goes to show how far ahead Ferry is of other Trance producers - every collab hes been in,its all his sounds you mainly hear. Even in this with VdM,he said he came up with the main melody, its his trademark bassline,FX,percs etc....Genius!
Thanks so much! And I agree ;-)
possibly one of the most amazing tracks ever made
This is one of my favourite trance tracks of all time
One of the best trance songs I've ever heard! Ferry Corsten
Thanks for sharing the story of carte blanche. That's one of the most amazing songs made in electronic music so far and will probaly outlive both of its creators.
Dan M Thank you Dan, hope you enjoyed the interview!
Fun fact: Vincent de Moor helped produce a trance track that was used as the opening for the anime "Area 88". Its called Mission (Fuga)
He really did go out there during his career
A new Gouryella song each year?!? Ferry is so good to us! 🙌🏼
It's amazing how the melody appears and to become so great. Besides "Veracocha" these guys are amazing at coming up with music sounds suited to trance. Ferry's remixes are quite amazing!.. I love VDM's old skool stuff. Holland know what trance is. Thanks to you and Ferry himself for another great upload Twan :)
Thanks so much Scott!!
The whole interview is very "Ferry" hehehe, wonderful conversation, good interview and I love our Dutch accent, it's fantastic XD.
TheTekknician Thank you very much! Btw I did 2 more interviews with Ferry before, you cam find those on my channel as well 😉
LOL, ferry had so many projects, i think Muzikexpress should interview Ferry on every one of them, should keep you going up to ep. 200!
Haha hopefully in 2021 I can do another interview with Ferry again about another classic ;-)
@@muzikxpress Punk would be a good contender, think it was playlisted on daytime BBC Radio 1 in UK at the time too, along with huge Cosmic Gate remix in the package.
Iow3freq music oh trust me, I have like 8 ideas for future interviews with Ferry already 😂 (and “Punk” is indeed one of them).
this is absolute goldust hearing about vincent as we dont have much on him !
When I was introduced to trance by my dad, one of the songs shown was Ferry’s adagio for strings. Years later, we still play so many trance songs. The other day we were playing “guess the artist” and galaxia came on. I asked what’s the song ID knowing it’s Ferry and my dad didn’t know, although he’s heard the song before. Then I was surprised to know that he didn’t know the artist for out of the blue, adagio for strings and other songs like carte Blanche because ferry always made songs under different names/projects or always put (Ferry remix) at the end of remix’s, still heavily crediting the original artist.
How crazy is that, listening to your favourites after 20 years and not knowing who Ferry Corsten is lol. But I must admit it took me a while to discover who Gouryella was, with all these project names I think people either don’t know or forget who ferry is sometimes. The guy is a legend
I remember all of (that I was aware of!) Ferry’s productions from the late 90’s and early 00’s. Such a happy period in my teenage years, going into my early 20’s. I can’t believe it’s been over 20 years since I was dancing to these tracks. The thing that always got me about this type of euphoric trance was the pure adrenaline rush and spine tingling that went with it. I never took any drugs back then because it just wasn’t necessary when the music was this good. Sometimes the emotion would be so intense that I felt I would pass out.
Even hearing Veracocha in this interview has got me tingling numerous times when I’m just sitting here in bed watching with my headphones on. Sublime. Thank you, Ferry, you were the soundtrack to some of the best years of my life 🙏
Such a great guy, love him so much! He was and still is one of my biggest inspirations when it comes to music production. Can't wait for his new stuff, especially the new Gouryella track! Thank you so much for the interview, Twan! Keep them coming and stay safe!
Thank you so much!
Great story!! Love this channel.
Classic Trance is just so epic and soulful. All these tunes have aged well... longevity.
Thank you very much! :)
It's funny when he started talking about the hook and how hard it was to find, it drops at the same time in the background. Grateful it took you that much time guys because the result is a timeless classic !
Good timing right? Glad someone noticed it haha! :P
@@muzikxpress haha yes it is! Great video and interview man !
Mahmoud M' thanks so much!!
Ferry, keep creating no matter what!
I heard this song once, then I went immediately and bought it on CD single, which shows you how much things have changed. Bought this, Yo Mama by Fatboy Slim and Theme from Gutbusters by Bentley Rhythm Ace. My local music store had a small area sectioned off for trance and techno, and you could listen to samples of music being released on headphones. Good times.
Great interview; love how they encapsulated the feeling by naming the track ‘Carte Blanche’; French for ‘blank canvas’ ❤️🔥
A gentleman, as always. Ferry - respect mate
Great interview and what a great guy. Such a contribution to music and he's still so very down to earth.
Thanks so much! And yes he is for sure!!
Ferry you and Vincent made the most memorable trance track ever here fact 100% the best trance song ever made I listen to at least 5 times a week 👌 may trance live on
Carte Blanche was the track that first got me into trance and from there to all dance music, clubbing, the whole scene. It will always be a most special track for me.
The greatest drop ever ❤
That awkward moment when you forget the B side of your own release. 😂
In all seriousness, I’m glad you brought up drafting. It’s a simple but fun track that compliments a legendary release. Sucks that contact has been lost with VDM. Would love to see at least one interview with him. A great interview as always too.
I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE WHAT THE F TOUR! Also so happy that Ferry dedicates himself to make one new Gouryella track every year ☺️
Keep up the good work ferry, keeping true trance alive
It's so crazy that Vincent De Moor just vanished. Shamu and Flowtation are some of my absolute favorite tracks growing up and I'll play those 12" any day of my life.
I'd also like to see him talking about his remix of Art of Trance - Madagascar (Ferry Corsten Mix)
For my vlogs, I only focus on originals. I do that because a remix is usually "just" a remix job for an artist, while there's always way better and more cool stories about originals ;-) Plus artists rather talk about their own stuff instead of a remix they did for someone else.
@@muzikxpress Understandable. It's one of those tracks that overshadow the original, even though the original is ground breaking in itself. Thank you so much for your uploads. I grew up listening to trance and now I'm able to see videos of producers like Ferry, M.I.K.E telling us their stories. I'm just finishing up the MIKE interview, Universal Nation in 4 hours Jeez. Thank you so much again for what you're doing!
Bob Terrwillinger Thank you Bob!! I hope once this whole Corona stuff is over, I’ll be able to record another interview with M.I.K.E. Btw 😉
My favourite trance interview ever.
Oh wow, thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
It was meant to be ;) ❤️👍🏻 and the rest, as they say, is history 😁 always love Ferry’s stuff and still going strong
When I heard the melody to VdM's Fly Away I instantly assumed that the melody for Carte Blanche must've came from him too, as they're very similar. Interesting that it was actually Ferry who came up with it!
Yes, great 2*12", The Additional Works
I wish I'd have found this when it premiered. That was my birthday. I never knew Veracocha involved Ferry. Sorry I'm a bit of a slouch! Life certainly comes at you fast.
Happy belated birthday, hope you enjoyed the interview!
Still one of my all time greatest tunes I have ever heard.
Even today still fresh, still on top form.
I hope this goes down in history as one of the best.
It deserves so much more recognition.
Big thanks to Twan the best holland interviewer for another great piece of his art really apperciate that. And also big thanks for including one of my absolute favorite Ferry's tunes "Right Of Way" as background music. Very proud to be subscriber of your channel!
WOW! Ferry's english has gotten so good over the last like 20 years! I remember meeting him back around 2001 after a show. Ferry is a class act! I remember asking him to sign my passport at the time, and he was like, "Are you sure?" Lol
Haha you still have the signed passport?
@@muzikxpress I do! It was also signed by Tiesto and George Acosta.
Those were my favorite DJs at the time .
This is fucking genius. Signing a passport is probably the best thing as it represents the journeys that these djs/producers have taken all of us on!
Thanks both, always loved and was curious around this one
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for this interview and big thanks to Ferry on great trance music he made!Greetings from Croatia!
This is probably my favourite trance track ever, thanks Twan once again
Ferry is a true musical genius
Oh yes he is!
I really enjoyed this interview! Interesting and gives much insights in the making of Carte Blanche
Thank you so much!
I just got my copy on vynal out of storage after 15 years, covered in horribleness, I cleaned it up and it's still one of my favourite trance songs ever, not aged a day.
so many great memories, being munted to this track.
This is in one of my top 10 trance tracks off all time. But I was today years old that I found out Ferry was behind Carte’ Blanche
greg Jones Haha, I’m glad my video was educational as well then 😉 There’s 2 more interviews with Ferry on my channel btw!
Thank you Twan for such a great interview. Thank you Ferry! 🙏🏾
Bedroom Dj’s aka Dj Shynee thank you!!
Ferry has made some of the most epic trance tunes ever produced.Vincent De Moor Flowtation not too shabby either !😍
what a classic!!! played it so many times
This was such a great interview! What an absolutely iconic genre defining track and melody. He has really been there from the beginning and has made some beautiful music. Right of way is still my favourite trance artist album of all time!
But also big shout out and big respect to Twan. I love the fact that you never interrupt the artists and always wait for them to make their point, even when they pause briefly. It really is a joy to watch these stories, and I hope you don't ever stop doing them! Cheers 🙂👍
Oh wow, thank you so much for the kind words! And when I see talkshows / interviews, it always annoys me when the presenter / host does interrupt the guest(s). For me it’s very important what the artists have to say, so I always try to let them talk as much as possible without interrupting them. And I’m working on some new interviews for later this year, so hopefully I’ll be able to do this for a while still 😉 Thanks again for the nice words!!!
Excellent good interview, thanks for you support and job, classic masterpiece, greetings my friend ☆
Thanks a lot for the kind words Carlos!
Another great interview, Twan. I love your work. And Ferry is such a legend and a great guy.
Would love to be in lockdown with this person for days, very inspiring watch. Glad to see hardware in the studio even if just for decoration. Still the old sound can't be replicated easily today for many reasons but he certainly tried hard with Anahera though The Sonnet by System F it's based on is still a lot nicer to me. His catalogue of music is immense, and personally he couldn't come across any better either, cheers both 🍺🍺
Which Ferry Corsten production / remix do you really want to hear during Ferry's "What The F" shows?
Faithless 'Why Go' and some of the lesser played works of Mr Corsten from 98/99
I will enjoy every tune he play. But I would love to hear these remixes: Aven - All I wanna do. Apoptygma Berzerk - Kathy's Song. Kosheen - Catch. List goes on and on :)
Would love to hear an update or rework of Rock Your Body Rock, that track used to light up a dance floor.
His remix of Kathy’s song by Apoptygma Berzerk... sheer perfection
Interspace by discodroids
Great interview. Pure nostalgia, excange of energy, camera and Ferry's down to earth voice. Thanks. Trance lives. Regards from Serbia
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed the interview!
Pretty cool they met nerding out at an instrument convention. This is how it came about :).
Starparty - I'm in love is still 1 of his best tracks hes done 🔉🔉🔉
Best show on international television, still!
Thanks for this video, Twan! This was the track that made me aware of trance, and what I really should be listening to!
I first heard this song on the radio when I was at my parents' cabin in 1999.
In 1999, there was no Shazam, so I crossed my fingers that the radio DJ would name the song when it was finished.
Luckily, he did. And he name dropped this. It was also the Hyperstate Theme that year, and that opened a whole new world for me.
Thisn song resulted in Recluse, Manipura and Seyton. So I owe a lot to Ferry, Vincent and this song!
PS: Last year, I bought a used JP-8000, just because of how much that synth means to me. A lot of my favourite tracks of all time, has been made with that.
So finally, it's part of my collection! :)
Thank you Thomas!! And oh, those good old times right? hehe
Just listening how this beautiful song was created gives me goosebumps!
Trance is too good for this world, because Trance is a gift from another world another galaxy, from a planet of beauty and peace....
Trance is more than a music is a way of life.
Trance forever 💜
Great interview, thankyou Twan & Ferry!
Serious goosebumps when Vincent took a smoke break and his reaction to what Ferry was playing. Magic.
I wonder what synth(s) was used for the Carte Blanche bassline.
