  • It'd been a while since I shot my last roll of film, so I decided last week to get up early, stuff my Olympus AF-1 Twin and a roll of Kodak Gold 200 in my pocket and go for long photo walk in my hometown Friedrichshafen in South Germany. I'd never done any street photography walk in my hometown really, so this was a new and lovely experience. What I love about shooting with a 35mm point and shoot camera is that it makes you focus entirely on the framing, as it allows you to ignore the settings etc.
    Gear I used to make this video:
    Fujifilm X-T3
    Fujinon 18-55mm

    In my view, the core of "street photography" is photographing people in the street, usually up close. A lot of these images I would consider to fall more into the category of still life or landscape (or cityscape) photography. To me the essence of street photography is the interaction with people and whatever dangers or rewards that portends.

      Thanks for pointing this out! I guess you're right here, a lot of the photos should better be classified as cityscape, or other categories. Regarding the definition of street photography, however, I don't necessarily think that it has to be taking photos of people "up close". But I'm aware that opinions about what really is street photography go in many directions. Sean Tucker made an interesting video about this topic ("My Street Photography Philosophy") if you're interested

      @@StefanDressmaker Yes, "up close" doesn't really describe what I was wanted to say, but I was trying to be brief and my comment was a little lazy. I don't really mean "up close" as in distance, or as in taking close up or portrait style photos, but in the sense of being involved in the life of the street, and taking photos that exhibit something personal, and something that says something about people. And not just personal to the photographer, but photos that show something personal about the people in them and their milieu.
      To me street photography forces you to interact with people because the fact that you're taking photos that include them is obvious, and people react to that in all sorts of ways. I've had people become angry and belligerent, people express curiosity, and people spontaneously pose. Often I'm asked what publication I work for and many of the people who ask me that are very disturbed when I tell them I'm taking photos for myself, or a blog. I have to force myself to deal with that because I find it much easier just to distance myself and photograph buildings, animals, landscapes, cityscapes, or just the unusual.

    Love the colors and the grain from that film stock. Is it normal for an ISO 200 to create so much grain?

    • @StefanDressmaker
      @StefanDressmaker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Ben!! I think the grain is an inherent part when shooting 35mm film, even at low ISO film stock. Since its kind of a miniature format, I guess some grain stems from enlarging the image after scanning. What may cause the high amount of grain as well is improper exposure, especially underexposed images, which very likely have been the case here with the point and shoot camera. Hope that answers your question more or less :)
