Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.

I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his TH-cam videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

Rick, That was a nice save on the reel. Have a great Sunday!

I just rescued the 4000 version of this reel thanks to you. The rear drag was hopelessly frozen. Your video saved me from making a bad guess getting it unstuck and functional. One thing that bothers me about this reel and a few others is that the screws are not stainless. It's designed to fail quickly in salt water use. You have to wonder just how many pennies were saved by cheaping out on the fasteners.
Chris, I don’t think it was intended for this reel to be used in salt water. I think it was an entry level reel for fresh water. A few pennies here and there few there and the reel becomes cheaper than the competition’s reel. There goal is to sell you a reel today. They don’t much care about tomorrow on entry level reels. They figure you will fish it a few time and either quit or upgrade.
Glad you posted. Working on a 4000 model I just got from a yard sale. Was missing pin on the quick release lever. So made one with a nail.
I glad you were able to get the 4000 up and running again. Do what you can with what you’ve got.
Looks like it took a dive in a muddy river. Nice save.
According to Mario it was in a flood.
Wow, this one was filthy. I do not like the anti-reverse on this reel! You did a great job on it.. Unfortunately I just don’t care for fast-cast reels. - Chris
Chris, what’s your problem with the AR? The 1 in 360 return? Aside from that, I like this AR. It’s silent, overridable and solid. I agree that I’m not a fan of fast-cast reels, but you don’t have to use that function so it’s easily ignored. I’m not a fan of rear drag reels because they are so often neglected, causing early failure. Overall, for an inexpensive reel, I think it’s pretty nice and will get the job done.
I brought you a good one this time huh Rick? Lol
Mario, I liked this little reel.
That reel is really looking good Rick.
Yes I do. Righty all the way.
I am so tempted to try catching a red with it rick
I see no reason this won't catch a big red fish.
