- Sonic Superstars actually has a bunch of really cool references and throwbacks like these that were going to be looking at. But before we get to the more obscure ones later on, let’s start with the more well-known references and work our way up from there.

I can't believe this guy knew most refrences, but didn't know the robot you battle is actually your custom one, meaning you can battle Metal Sonic
Yeah I was looking for that when mentioning the Cyber Zone boss fight, especially since you can make the robot metal Sonic, but even more so, the default Robot kind of resembles Chaos Sonic from Sonic Prime with the LED screen for a face. (I mean if the brick break thing can make it in the video, that's not too much of a stretch)
He knows
In the previous video he talked about it
Wait so I can play vs batta (my oc)
The Bubble Was From Sonic 2 For The Game Gear. Triple Trouble Was The First With The Animation.
Good job
True
Good to find there are still people that care about sonic
Thank you out there fake fans in their place.
The bubble mechanic was also used in sonic mania, a sonic fangame by the people who made the ios ports of sonic 1, sonic 2, and sonic cd :P
References that I found in this game:
1. The ability "bullet" has arrows that indicate how fast you'll charge much like the spindash's functionality in Sonic Labyrinth
2. The pose Tails does after completing an act is from the title screen of Sonic the Hedgehog 2
3. The pose Knuckles does after completing an act and Classic Amy's in-game artwork with her modern outfit are from their respective artworks of Sonic Advance
4. Rail grinding in a 2D Sonic was a thing for Sonic and Amy in Sonic Advance and for Tails and Knuckles in Sonic Advance 2
5. The concept of collecting one chaos emeralds per zone first started in Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit)
6. Cyber Station Zone has a huge resemblance to Techno Base from Sonic Advance 2
7. The Mosasaurus chase in Bridge Island Zone has a huge resemblance to the Orca chase in act 1 of Emerald Coast from Sonic Generations (Nintendo 3DS)
I wonder what the Snake in the Desert stage is a reference to. Something about it looked really familiar. I know of the snake you fight in Forces and Zavok's snake mech...but this cartoony one that's mostly friendly... Maybe I'm mixing it up with Yoshi's Story.
@@MarioMastar The snake in Sonic Forces is trying to eat you in a quick-time event in Luminous Forest and the thing Zavok was on is called the Death Queen (a giant bee robot)
I love this comment! But I think you could grind rails in Sonic Rush for DS too. I try to block that game out because 70% of the game was a bottomless pit. Like someone just forgot to finish *every* level past the first zone.
@@metasteelgaming4373 There are rails to grind on in Sonic Rush but what I meant was that the first 2D Sonic game to feature those is Sonic Advance but only Sonic and Amy could rail grind and in Sonic Advance 2 Tails and Knuckles rail grind not only for the first time in a 2D Sonic game but for the first time in general
@gameomer1855 I get you. Advance was first ever 2d, Advance 2 was dirst for all characters. Amy grinding in Sonic Advance (1) was weird though.
The water tunnel sequence with grabbing poles actually first appeared in Labyrinth Zone in Sonic 1
Yeah
it was also in sonic cd
!!!!
yay

I really appreciate the side-by-side comparison! The editing clearly shows a lot of effort and passion.
2:18 Sonic Forces was the first time that the bunny was introduced in a game...
Guess it wasnt the original Sonic hunny design though. 🤔
I think you might be referring to the oc charecter
Bunny*
The rotating Bonus Stages are like Sonic 1's Special Stages, but they particularly resemble a cut Bonus Stage for Sonic CD with the same multiple layers of rotating level.
Splats also appears in the Debug Mode of both Mania and the Retro Engine version of Sonic 1.
The trap that appeared in Mania Adventures actually first appeared in a Sonic Jam animation.
Very late into the party but here's my contribution to the subject too.
One of the monologues Sonic will yap out in Sonic Frontiers is "I wish we were sharing an umbrella Amy". In Sonic Superstars in one of the final levels of the game there's a drawing of Sonic and Amy sharing an umbrella.
5:21 error: trip is female, not male.
Whait. Sonic Mania is a offical Fan-Game. I thought that isn’s just Sonic’a Team game.
Yep. Christian Whitehead had been working on Sonic fangames for a while, then pitched an accurate port of Sonic CD to modern systems. This started his connection with Sega, leading to additional ports by him of Sonic 1 and 2.
After that, he approached Takashi Iizuka (basically the guy in charge of everything Sonic) on making an original game, which Sega let happen. Christian Whitehead got himself and a bunch of other people from the Sonic fangames community together, making what would become Sonic Mania. For the mania, by the mania.
You mean wait?
yeah me too bro
I mean everyone should know that.
Well… yes and no. A lot of sonic mania staff had been known for working on fan games. However, by 2017, most of them had been professionally working in the industry for a couple years. It is a game by fans, professional fans, just not a fan game.
I didnt know about the Eggmobile being different depending on the character you choose in Frozen Base Act 2! Really nice attention to detail there.
Splats also appears in the Sonic 1 remake for IOS and Android if you use debug mode but that one was also made by Christian Whitehead and Head Canon it's an official remake but it was also made by fans
i see no one pointing out that the dark sections in speed jungle act 2 might be a reference to sonic 4 episode 1
I love the references from sonic superstars, i know the game is hard but once u fully playit and practice it (like sonic games are supposed to be played) it becomes easy and you can blast at speeds through the level
Splats also became Figurine for a Obscure Sonic & Knuckles Figurine Collection in 1994 made by TOMY. He was included as a set with Sonic, Tails and a badnik. The set had so many characters that wasn’t even in the game like Metal Sonic and many badniks from Sonic 1 and 2.
I got extremely excited when I got through Frozen Base Zone and found myself playing the first level of Fantasy Zone
0:05 Correction: It was seen first in Sonic 2 for the game gear (which somehow came out BEFORE the genesis version) in Aqua Lake. It was then reused in Triple Trouble then in Mania. Superstars uses that mania pose.
Golden capital was actually a reference to an unused stage in sonic 1 complete with an unused design for the loop de loops. I think the stage was called golden zone
Sonic Mania: Makes a bunch of references to old or obscure Sonic games
Sonic Superstars: Makes a bunch of references to Sonic Mania, and obscure non-Sonic games
Its like they got the idea, but didnt understand it.
How so? They references lots of Sonic games. Mania is part of the classic serie now so of course they are going to reference it too.
And what's the problem with referencing non Sonic SEGA games? It wouldn't be the first time SEGA does it for Sonic.
@@SoraKingdom3 Sonic references that were to Mania or already referenced in Mania from this video: Sonic in a bubble, CD Peelout, Metal Sonic battle from CD, Frozen Sonic, Robotniks swimsuit, Rabbit Badnik, Sonic using the Eggmobile to fight a boss, Hydrocity poles, Radio transmission travel, leg lift trap, Sonic 3 victory jingle.
Sonic references that were not to Mania or done first in Mania: Metal Knuckles, Tails Doll, Mecha Sonic, Sonic 1 Special Stages, specific Eggmobile references, The End, Rabbit. Thats it.
I wont count idle poses for either because theyre always the same. I wont count Fang for Mania because Superstars is partially a reference to Triple Trouble in general, not a reference to Mania using Fang.
Thats way, way too many references to Mania or things Mania did when theres still a ton of obscure Sonic to reference, and barely any original references. Its just copying your classmates homework and changing a few things so its not obvious. Plus you know, Mania was intentionally meant to be a throwback game filled with references while this was supposed to be a completely new original Sonic game. You didnt see Sonic 3 making tons of references to 1 and 2.
@@baval5 So on one hand, Superstars didn't have enough Sonic references, but it also had too many because it's not a throwback game?
@@miwestraveler3986 No. On the one hand, Superstars had too many throwback references and on the other hand 2/3s of them were to Mania, which isnt actually a throwback.
@@baval5 Exactly, you say too many of them are from Mania, which is the same thing as saying not enough of them were real throwbacks. Yet you complain that it shouldn't have throwbacks anyway. So it still makes no sense.
Ian Flynn has confirmed the moon in superstars is not the end.
Naaaah i am not sure if ian developed that...
@@LilyBrew15 he is the sonic loremaster
i find it funny the beginning of the video is like: if you hold right, YOU'LL MOVE RIGHT????
If you design your battle robot as Metal Sonic, then the boss of Cyber Station will also be Metal Sonic.
Phantasy Zone is not a Master System game, it's originally an arcade release and the Master System version is just one of the many ports.
The bubble in lagoon city act 2 is actually from sonic 2 ms or gg
Fun fact: the robot boss you fight in Cyber City is your battle mech from the online battle mode
So you can actually fight metal sonic if that’s your skin which is cool.
I love the video! It's clear that you put effort into editing.
2:45 did you say "resignated" instead of resonated? I swear that's what I'm hearing lol.
According to a Prima Strategy Guide for Sonic Advance 2, the rabbit design for Sonic wasn't meant to be fast, but instead grabbed rings with his ears. The game Riatar you mentioned was repurposed from that concept, with his long stretchy arms replacing the rabbit ears.
Also, not sure if this counts, but I'm pretty sure E-102 Gamma's first stage in Sonic Adventure includes like 80 Tails dolls to shoot. But maybe they weren't *the* Tails doll, so I don't know.
Edit: I spelled first *forst* lol
I could have never noticed the ristar reference
Trip is riding the Egg Scorcher because since both character and vehicle shoots fire
Love your content 😊😊😊❤❤❤
Thank you !
I recognize this game's flaws, but its exact copying of the animations, SFX and bonus levels really makes it for me. I hope we get a sequel that builds on this, it's a formula that works imo
the loop in golden capital zone is a reference to a piece of concept art from sonic 1
The water level part is also in labyrinth zone in sonic 1 ya know
I knew all of this
The mecha sonic from Sonic 2 does also make an appearance in Lego dimension, speed jungle might be a refrence to that one jungle zone in sonic triple trouble, the sonic superstars final boss is inspired by the final boss of sonic 3and knuckles, the lego skins is a refrence to lego dimensions, eggrobo does make a comeback as the eggman for trips story and as an enemy, the freezing animation is also a reference to sonic mania
when you find tails doll is sonic st he overall looks adorable in high quality
I think the piggy bank mini-boss that steals your rings at the end of Golden Capital 1 is a reference to the piggy bank badniks that can steal your rings in Sonic Advance 3.
6:37 Actually, this section originated from Tidal Tempest from CD
8:30: Fantasy Zone was originally an arcade game and released 1986. The master system version is a port of the arcade version. The two bosses you find in Superstars are the bosses of the first and second world of Fantasy Zone.
Sure Frontiers already broke their lore, but THE END IN CLASSIC SONIC AGES!? HOW!?
0:09 my brain just went: "SONIC MOVIE- SONIC MOVIE- SONIC MOVIE- SONIC MOVIE- SONIC MOVIE-"
Nice editing 🔥🔥
I also realized that the buzz bombers shoot lasers like the ones from Sonic Movie 2
Does that mean that Sonic Frontiers takes place in the same universe as Sonic Superstars, or is that before "The End" even took over in Sonic Frontiers, lore?
Bubble mechanicals actually from sonic 2-8 bit
The 3rd one is CUTE❤😊
Hey infinite bits, did you know that the hanging leg trap in sonic mania adventures and fangs cutscenes are actually a reference to a forgotten and scrapped sprite of sonic from sonic CD? Christian Whitehead actually remade the same sprites with tails over sonic in the mobile port too.
Some sound effects are similar to other Sega Games. specifically the boss of Frozen Base Act 2 the hit sound effects are similar to Dynamite Headdy. Including how the boss getting damaged goes from Green, Yellow, Red then destroyed.
cool edit :3
There's a small Tails Doll appearance in the Lego Dimensions Sonic level pack which I thought was pretty neat
Nice!
Thanks!
🤓Actually that’s not boss fight with Metal Sonic but race🤓.( Just kidding)
For you if you don’t know: the rabbit skin name is actually feels the rabbit if you Google it there is a lot of images
"studio-opolis zone" had me dying lmao
Imagine superstars came out first and people were just "Weird purple moon...."
BTW, that "Mecha Sonic"is actually called Silver Sonic
Nope, its called Mecha Sonic. He was based off of Mecha Godzilla and the concept arts showed Mecha Sonic as his name.
Nice
Imagine not knowing that horizontal "figure eight" is an infinity sign.
1:49 wait, if the end is still here, does this mean sonic is still in cyberspace?!?!?!
Bro Sonic superstars is Before Sonic frontiers.
2:53
*this art is amazing*
reference:when tails gets frozen its the same for the opening cutsceen for sonic 2
Someone finally knows Ristar
1:48 Wait, The End is in Sonic Superstars?! That's cool to know, at least you don't have an annoying secret boss fight with it unlike in Frontiers, I hated doing that boss, and so when I had to do it 2 times, I was about to go crazy...
If you wanna beat it easily, piss on it.
the bubbles in lagoon city first appered in aqualake zone from sonic 2 on the mastersystem before triple trouble...
For the hydro city reference of the wave current it's actually labyrinth which was the first one not hydrocity
Cyber Station Zone might be a reference to Deltarune Chapter 2 Cyber Field
Same color, almost same name, it has to be
The bubbñe comes originally from sonic 2 SMS
correction, the bubble mechanic is actually from the 8-bit version of Sonic 2, which came out before the 16-bit one.
also real fans know the 8-bit sonic games
The bubble first debuted on Sonic 2 for Gamegear/Mastersystem
This is probably the most obscure reference. If you pick knuckles and he does he pushing sprite his model is the exact same as the sonic jam game com pushing sprite which is so baffling which is the same for his whole design being based on his April 1993 look.
Cool references! Just one thing about the Splatters one: Sonic Superstars is not made by Sonic Team, it's made by Arzest. Therefore Splatters still is MIA in Sonic Team games lol
It was co-developed by both of them which is why Sonic team's logo animation shows up at the beginning of the game too. They provided guidence and oversaw the whole development process of the game.
Just a Little Correction: You said the water pushing section was a reference to Sonic 3's Hidrocity Zone, however this is actually a reference for Laberinth Zone from Sonic 1, if you haven't seen this, just go the right routes. ;D
The brick thing is actually a reference to casino night aswell
Under 1 hour gang
Let's goo
0:10 bros never played sonic 3
5:23 It's she.
Actually floating bubble from sonic the hedgehog 2 for game gear
Just to let you know -- Arzest developed superstars, sonic team wasn't very involved
did anyone realize that from that on level with that pinball reference the lazer shooters are a reference to the lazer shooters from sonic forces level 16
Super sonic also have an idle animation which is a reference to his sonic 3 idle animation
We started the video horribly with sonic triple trouble being obscure, also the end is not in superstars, its just a really similar planet
u can customise your skin in battle mode and this skin will be in the cyber station boss
The floating bubble mechanic was actually from sonic the hedgehog 2 8 bit
When Tails Drowns You can become super to be unable to drown
8:29 *_Cuphead has left the chat_*
You forgot to mention Metal NiGHTS
We better call the bunny Speedy
Trips spinning animations look like vectors
Why does everyone forgot that splatz the rabbit appeared in Sonic CD
06.02 knuckle is completely different animation?
Yes, Sonic Mania referenced Sonic Superstars before it released
Referenced*
The bubble came from Sonic 2 Game Gear.
bridge zone is from sonic 1 for the mastersystem
Trip spindash is references on vector spindash in knuckles
Let's gooo
Ayeee beauty edits!
LoL
6:45 labyrinth zone: am i a joke to you?
Maybe the the moon boss was falling at the time because Remember in sonic forces how tails said classic sonic was from another dimension
4:50 there's actually 120 different cutscenes because multuplayer
