- One of the most iconic sound stages on the Universal Studios Hollywood backlot was allegedly haunted by the very Phantom that made it famous. We take a look at the urban legend, where the ghost of Lon Chaney made his home on Sound Stage 28, the iconic sound stage built for The Phantom of the Opera film.

I was fortunate enough to have worked on Stage 28, and got to see the Phantom of the Opera set. Mostly teirs of opera boxes . Very Cool!
At one point the crew left the stage, but someone had to stay so I volunteered to be that someone.
I was walking on the catwalks above our set checking the rigging when I felt an electrical surge. I told the maintenance crew about it, but they said there was no electrical on the section i was walking on.
Someone asked where I was when I felt the surge, and it happened to be where the electrician had fallen to his death.
I went back up on the catwalk and felt nothing. I said hello, and introduced myself and said I'd be back to visit whenever I could.
Years later we were working on the backlot, and I took some guys to see the Phantom set.
Security said the stage was locked and no production was on the stage at that time.
We walked up the stairs to the backstage door, and one of the guys tried to open the door but it was locked. I said, "Let me give it a try." I walked up, knocked on the door, introduced myself, and said I was back to visit. I pressed the handle and the door opened. As i walked in i said thank you, and proceeded to show the guys the set.
I said thank you & goodbye, and I'd try to get back sooner. It happened again one other time before they tore the stage down! Years later people asked how i opened the door, i told them the ghost of the electrician let me in!
They say the ghost now haunts the Hogwarts castle, seeking revenge!

I worked on that Soundstage for 2 days in October years ago. I didn't realize that this was The Phantom Of The Opera stage or how many times it was used until years later.
How did you not notice the opera box balconies? They were on the south end of the stage! They were there since 1925 til the day they tore the stage down. If you didn't see the Opera box balconies, maybe you weren't on Stage 28!

There are rumors out there that the sets crumbled upon removal, seems unlikely to me that all of what remained of these plaster boxes were lost, but perhaps they no longer exist in their entirety. I had hoped that the new academy museum would be a fitting home for the historic pieces but I was underwhelmed upon visiting the museum, they also lack the adequate space for the sets. Perhaps they can be installed in a theatre in need of restoration.
What a shame the soundstage was torn down😢, sometimes the march of progress is just too much

I would have like to vist inside the phantom of the opera set but sucks that its gone now

Stage 28 at Universal Studios was also used as the interior for the pilot episode of The Incredible Hulk, when the interior of the Southwest Lab of the fictional Culver Institute was on Stage 28

Man it's sad we lost this and it's still sad Orlando is the only place that has the E.T attraction and they got rid of the others for Nintendo

It's not like Universal Studios Hollywood Soundstage 28 was the most haunted in the backlot also Universal Studios is much older than Universal Studios Orlando

I visited this stage while they were shooting THE RING 2. There was definitely a vibe to it.
