ohhhh, a jack! I've always just bench pressed mine into place which made it awkward getting it on to my chest once I was under my rig. the things you learn from TH-cam...
Comments about how this is too basic for seasoned Bleepin Jeepers. Comments about how this is not detailed enough for novices. Sheesh folks. Chill and enjoy. Some of us can turn a wrench but didn't know the difference between a 249 and a 231. Now we do. Good job, Matt. Keep up the good work!
I liked the first bleepinjeep videos better , when there was no stupid music and Matt would actually explain to you how and what exactly he was doing to his jeeps.
Firewallsniper, it's not TH-cam ads. It's the ads he is producing for the pull a part place. I get that he does it for the payday, but they are mostly useless videos for anyone who can follow what he did with scorpion.
They've already done plenty of transfer case videos in the past, he probably didn't want people to complain like "what the hell, you've already done transfer case swap videos before, do something original!" They still do plenty of useful and descriptive videos, but i do agree that they are a slight bit more rare than usual lately.
Matt, maybe a video on the many transfer cases used since the 1960's through today? I doubt many non-hard core off-road peeps are aware of the differences such as chain driven vs. gear driven. Also, the marketing people with all auto makers use terms like "command shift" and "full time" or "part time" which don't really provide the real facts as to what a car owner is getting for a transfer case. For example, the newer Dodge and Ford trucks which have a completely different idea for engagement of the front and rear differentials, some are controlled with hubs, some inside the axles etc. Might be something good for you to do for us so we can sift through all the many marketing names that truly say zero about the good or the bad in transfer cases when we need them.
What is the switch he swaps at 2:37. I'm swapping out a electric shift np233d for a np231j in a 05 dakota need to look up info on it and see if i need to do anything with it but everything I've found just calls it an electric switch...
When I did my 249 to 231 swap I had to swap input shafts aswell as the planetary and annulus gears as they were a different cut depending on the year transfer case you get and the input shaft from my 249 was quite a bit longer as the reason for having to use it.
Dorsk84 stock zj tease 249 has a vivacious coupling which is shit gives you 4 wheel drive all the time (all wheel drive) and 4lo. 231 gives you 2hi (regular rear wheel drive) 4 hi and 4 lo. 231 has a massive amount of products etc.
Justin Pease I've got a 97 5.2 with the 249 what driveshaft do I have to steal to make the 242 to work currently no lift kit completely stock that's my question
So your existing ZJ driveshaft fit onto the 231 despite the difference in output shafts between the two cases? This has me worried about swapping my 249.
Hey I'd really like to hear about Tim's jeep. How it drives with the axles, the clearance he had to make for 33's, and a review on the intake, all that jazz. Is there anyway to contact him or is a video like that coming along?
I like your removal of the 249... Doing mine (swapping for a 242; and doing the SYE on my TJ) I dropped both of them on my chest. They didnt have far to fall, but still not the 'funnest' way to do it. Also, putting them back in with one person SUCKS, haha.
Matt , I just bought 1999 grand Cherokee lmtd. Want to put Np 231 in it for rear wheel drive option will this work and is there anything I need to know about doing this swap ... Just getting started in the jeep overland scene.. .."Oh " and this is a budget build .... Any suggestions on best budget lift?
Quick question watched your video informative. But wondering if you know answer to a question since you work on these? I just did a tranny swap on a 2004 jeep liberty. swapped the tranny and transfer case together. Both Jeeps 2004.The donor jeep shifter has less like 4 high 4 low, the jeep i put into has 4 wheel part time , fulltime, and low. In other words I assume its technically 2 different transfer cases even though tranny same model and transfer case fits. The question is is there any problems with the differentials like is there a gear ratio in each transfer case?will my differentials work with any proper transfer case or are they mated by model. Does that make sense? I'm now worried about having a mismatched drivetrain. Hoping its OK, seems to drive ok
Does this swap ruin the cv axle or any components faster not that it is rwd instead of awd? My 249 in my 97 zj is going out and I need a better fix is $300 reasonable for this tcase np231j? From a xj
Hi I️ have a 97 wrangler with a 231, the rear end went on it last year (original) and when it did the drive shaft came out and bent the output shaft on the transfer case. So it now vibrates as you drive, I️ have a spare 242 t case would I️ be able to swap it in with no issues ? I️m keeping the 231 and eventually having it rebuilt and out back in but for now I️ need a solution. Thanks
Michael Potts if you live up north, avoid the 2000, some people have the heads crack. Other than that, I don't think any year models are really bad. Grand Cherokees seem to have more electrical trouble than the regular ones. Best of luck! they're great cars!
Michael Potts well My 2000 Grand Cherokee hasn't had any real bad issues, although its had an electric window go out and you need to research the taillight problem if your brake or blinker lights give you any trouble that replacing a bulb won't fix. Make sure you get the straight six cylinder engine, they last forever and are easy to work on!
Michael Potts..check Matt's website BleepinJeep.com look thru the playlist he has a good video on picking the year that you want for XJ's. What to look for and what to avoid.
So I've got a 94 grand cherokee laredo 5.2l v8. All time 4 wheel drive, what transfer case would swap straight into It? From what I get only 96 and up are the same? I need 2wd high for highway use bad.
As long as the 231 has the same length of input shaft, then yes. You will need to move the shift lever from the 249 over to the 231 and maybe a speedo gear, but that's it. If it's not the same length you need to split the cases and get the input shaft out of the 249.
I need the 249 AWD case out of my GC 5.9 and I have a 97 GC parts car with a 231 behind a 4.0 setup . Wonder if input shafts are the same? I’m under the impression they won’t be. If someone knows for sure lmk please.
Thank You for the great content. QUESTION. Can I flat tow behind my motorhome ( 4 wheels on ground) a 96 ZJ with the 249 transfer case? I tested by putting transfer case in neutral and transmission in park and zj moves freely forward and reverse as I push it. Ssme thing happens if transfer case is in neutral and transmission in neutral, I wonder what's safer. Please someone with experience on this reply. I have a trip coming soon and need to know. For my towing points I'm good. Jeep has a heavy duty winch mount with d rings and it's sandwiched over the unibody frame.. (1996 5.2 V8 with full time 4wd 249 transfer case, automatic transmission)
Gwazymodo yea I read that, but ive also read the the input shaft are longer on the v8 ZJs, ans the the shafts must be swapped out when switching from a np249 to a np231 or np242
Dont the input shafts need to be the same length? Friend is looking at a 96 5.2 grand Cherokee wanting to check this out before we drive 600-700 plus miles round trip
Matt, seemed like you were having some trouble getting it into 4LO? did it just take you getting western with it to make it work? hopefully it's just something as simple as linkage adjustments :) Carry on, Matt!
have you run across the issue of connector from 242 to a 231, i took the 231 out of sons 94 and put in to replace the 242 in a 99 and i cant swap connectors or switches.
ok so i watch the show 2 things abought the 231 an 242 if you want an you should u can use light weight Full Synthetic Motor Oil aka 0w30 works awesome on the 231 an 242 wount evaporated like tranny fluid an 2on like i noted below if you have a 5.2 the input shaft same spline count longer input shaft
BleepinJeep finally did one on my wrangler after having a skid drop for years, it drives a lot better! I used the Tera flex supper short eliminator with a flange and custom drive shaft; wasn't the cheapest but worked out good.
Mike Dwyer on the firewall there should be two hoses next to each other that are for the heater core. If you take those hoses off the firewall and run them together that should bypass it.
So I have a 2000 XJ that has some Transfer case issues, basically the front drive shaft broke free at the yoke and grenaded the transfer case front casting, all internal components are still good and viable. Like many on here we've all read the articles about pulling a used case from another XJ, or even an TJ of ZJ, changing the input gear and boom Bobs your uncle. The question I have is, does any one have any thoughts or experience with the NP231's out of the early Jeep Liberty's. I have access to a wrecked liberty, and I'm wondering what would I have to do to make it work, can I just change the input gear, or maybe even just use the case and swap all my xJ transfer case goodies into it. Any help on this would be appreciated.
Carter S 249 t case sucks. It's full time 4wd with a viscous coupling that fails and leaves you with 2wd.. Or in my case, it locks up completely. I would've uses a different case than they did personally.
I have a 92 Cherokee 2 door 5 speed np231 Fork was cracked so I swapped with a different np231 and now my clutch seems to engage a bit later near the end of the throw of the pedal. It starts to act like a slipping clutch on the freeway in 4th or 5th gear where RPMs climb but no acceleration. Anybody know what I did wrong?
Quick question. with your np231, was the input shaft shorter than the input on the 249? I’ve been researching and they say online to swap the shaft which sounds like a pain. Anyway to avoid that mess?
This is seriously my favorite series you do!! And the skit at the beginning is the best
ohhhh, a jack! I've always just bench pressed mine into place which made it awkward getting it on to my chest once I was under my rig.
the things you learn from TH-cam...
Music reminds me of the times when poppy and oma used to swap transfer cases in the old country.
+ryan lol
Ahhhh the old days are gone forever.
Lol

I know they take time to produce, but between ad videos for pull a part and these I'm feeling the same way.
Put on a Ad Blocker.
Firewallsniper, it's not TH-cam ads. It's the ads he is producing for the pull a part place. I get that he does it for the payday, but they are mostly useless videos for anyone who can follow what he did with scorpion.
just trying to help you out figured you had a ad problem ;)
They've already done plenty of transfer case videos in the past, he probably didn't want people to complain like "what the hell, you've already done transfer case swap videos before, do something original!" Mat you're having so much fun with these intros! I love it!
Some good old Bleepy throwback videos!
Hey...
Liked that befuddled look at Mike's tow truck joke @ the wrecker games ! Made it look like it was a stump.
👀 🤣
LOL Matt my man pulls a Mr Rogers right out the gate.
Street cred on Max Power.
Great vids and the comedy - its gold Jerry, GOLD!
Stay gold.
Lol.
This reminds me of the time I helped a gal shift from 4 hi back to 2hi, in a parking lot.
I had to rock that suburban, a little.😁
....oh yea, great info too, my buddy has same project goin! perfect timing !
at least it dident hit u in the face this time
fuzzy wuzzy rip
Bert Morlas ?
I said rest in peace because when matt took that transfer case to the face I was honestly scared that he died
I just knew that's why he used the rope
Best part is it only took about 7 minutes!! Nice!!
What is the switch he swaps at 2:37. I'm swapping out a electric shift np233d for a np231j in a 05 dakota need to look up info on it and see if i need to do anything with it but everything I've found just calls it an electric switch...

oo ya a 242 is a awesome swap an like uncorns you can sometimes find them in the junk yard with the right in put shaft {being that i have a 5.2 }
OMG!!!!! Ty for the video
love the caution statement too funny lol
Would it be possible for you to do a vid of the differences between the two different cases?
Dorsk84 stock zj tease 249 has a vivacious coupling which is shit gives you 4 wheel drive all the time (all wheel drive) and 4lo. 231 gives you 2hi (regular rear wheel drive) 4 hi and 4 lo. 231 has a massive amount of products etc.
l would never change the Quadra Trac setup this guy is so bored and informative. love him.
Which one has the 2wd,4wheel part time, 4wheel full time and 4low?
242 transfer case has that stuff. You can swap 249 to 242 just as easily.
Justin Pease I've got a 97 5.2 with the 249 what driveshaft do I have to steal to make the 242 to work currently no lift kit completely stock that's my question
You work fast LOL. Good video. A nice "SWEET" at the end would finish it off though.
For those who want the full experience: set video speed to 0.25... XD
Keep up the great work!!!
So your existing ZJ driveshaft fit onto the 231 despite the difference in output shafts between the two cases? This has me worried about swapping my 249.
i see the rear lamp failure warning is still working from when you eliminated the battery draw problem.
I was expecting the drivetrain to attack him again, honestly.
I wish all mechanics were this fast... :'P
Is there a video with by chance step by step instructions on the 231 swap?
Hey I'd really like to hear about Tim's jeep. How it drives with the axles, the clearance he had to make for 33's, and a review on the intake, all that jazz. Is there anyway to contact him or is a video like that coming along?

glad i saw this. now i know the difference between the 2! and ease up on the coffee....lol
Just watched this video! Is that an actual working VIC in a ZJ?!!!
How how did you already have the right shaft length?
Love the music
Matt , I just bought 1999 grand Cherokee lmtd. Want to put Np 231 in it for rear wheel drive option will this work and is there anything I need to know about doing this swap ... Just getting started in the jeep overland scene.. .."Oh " and this is a budget build .... Any suggestions on best budget lift?
Where did you get the parts to do this? I need help. I have a 1996 jeep grand cherokee limited 5.2 with the NP429
Did you add gear oil to the 231 ? or was it ATF ?
ATF with a gear oil bottle
Did not know you were on Patreon. Donations are coming, God Bless Sir.
Quick question watched your video informative. But wondering if you know answer to a question since you work on these? Can you explain what you did with the shifter linkage?
Is that the transfer case you pulled in a previous video at PullA part?
I was just talking about doing this swap
too much fun thank you
Does this swap ruin the cv axle or any components faster not that it is rwd instead of awd? My 249 in my 97 zj is going out and I need a better fix is $300 reasonable for this tcase np231j? From a xj
I think I saw a post on Craigslist might be matt selling that transfer Case
no, you want it?
oh no I'm fine with my np231 for now..at least till I upgrade
@@bleepinjeep does it matter what np231 I swap into my zj ? If so can you let me know which ones will work. Like can it be out of a xj and 4.0 zjs ?
hi i have zj w 239. what tranfer is better. 231 or 242 . tks
good video description ! do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars
How do I know if I can fit a 231 transfer case in my 93 jeep grand Cherokee v8?
Love the Chanel
Are the tail housings the same on 242 and 249
So! I see you just slapped in a drive shaft. For me that was a no go. Are you going to share how much you had the drive shaft shortened?
+Eugene Williams was a direct bolt in for me.
Interesting Did you use the ZJ shaft?
Yes please answer. Doing this swap tomorrow. Need to know if I can use the rear shaft.
And what do you thing about a hybrid - 249 and 247? The case body from 249 with 247 parts?
What lockers did you install in the Cheap Jeep? Did I miss something? Where is your video on the lockers?
MrGigaHurtz he welded the diffs
Oh okay, thanks. That's kinda disappointing, did he include the cost of the trailer and rig to tow the cheap jeep on the road in his budget? LOL
welded the rear: th-cam.com/video/uUeZ1QoVUtY/w-d-xo.html Lokka in the front: th-cam.com/video/YWNFMKbH24k/w-d-xo.html Where you been bro??
Haha yeah I missed that one, my bad!
What shift linkage did you use?? The one from the np249 or the one from the np231?
Hi

What winch and winch mount are you using?
Bleepinjeep what front and rear driveshaft did you use?
Were those the factory driveshafts?
you better do a BURNOUT now! since the 249 doesnt allow it. Lets see that #onetirefire #blacklinesmatter
and... wheres the wheeling trip in this BEAST!?
My daughter is looking for a new ride. I showed her these videos and now she is hunting for a one. Any yrs to stay awsy from? Things to look for?
Michael Potts if you live up north, avoid the 2000, some people have the heads crack. Other than that, I don't think any year models are really bad. Grand Cherokees seem to have more electrical trouble than the regular ones. Best of luck! they're great cars!

Ive got an 04 grand cherokee running strong at 250000. Make sure you get the 4.0. Bulletproof engine. Keep the oil clean and it will outlive you
what let you know it was time to swap out the transfer case?
Self Dunn the v8 grands are only AWD and 4lo. It's coming to swap a 242 or 231 so you can have 2wd also.
Jon Ruger and you can run in front wheel drive as I am. Rear driveshaft out for repair....
woo hoo, i got a 231 and 373s in the front and rear! what can ya tell me about by zj other than that? 4.0 auto.
So I've got a 94 grand cherokee laredo 5.2l v8. All time 4 wheel drive, what transfer case would swap straight into It? From what I get only 96 and up are the same? I need 2wd high for highway use bad.
So you can just install a 231 in place of a 249 with no swap out of parts?
As long as the 231 has the same length of input shaft, then yes. You will need to move the shift lever from the 249 over to the 231 and maybe a speedo gear, but that's it.

So I’ve kept my hands to myself and not fed the wildlife. Lol. Quick Q. You reused the rear shaft without mod? Or was that a different shaft?
no swapping out the input shaft?
Read the description "The jeeps are different models but same years so the input shaft spline count was exactly the same making for a semi easy swap!"
Gwazymodo yea I read that, but ive also read the the input shaft are longer on the v8 ZJs, ans the the shafts must be swapped out when switching from a np249 to a np231 or np242
David Marquez no thats not true. 96 and up zj and xj are all the same input shaft length.
Kevin Knabe setiously? I've had an np242 from a 97 zj sitting around for years because Im not that confident in swapping out the input shafts
David Marquez ypu dont have to if its a 96 and up xj or zj. all the same.
Dont the input shafts need to be the same length? Friend is looking at a 96 5.2 grand Cherokee wanting to check this out before we drive 600-700 plus miles round trip
Matt, seemed like you were having some trouble getting it into 4LO? did it just take you getting western with it to make it work? hopefully it's just something as simple as linkage adjustments :)
Carry on, Matt!
+Jason Kman it needed some adjustment underneath
Hey man nice vids, was wondering if you could help me out? I have a 94 zj, can I use a 98 np231 or do I have to stick with an earlier version?
i saw you swapped speed sense and the plug for the indicator lights ,, can this also be done with a 242 to 231 swap?
Yes
BleepinJeep someone told me the one for the 242 is bigger and will lock up the 231....
I haven’t taken my 242 out yet to see
BleepinJeep same goes for the indicator switch? 242 switch to a 231 tcase?
Why swap...I heard the 231s and 242s don't rattle when making a u/turn explain it to me pros & cons
have you run across the issue of connector from 242 to a 231, i took the 231 out of sons 94 and put in to replace the 242 in a 99 and i cant swap connectors or switches.
So serious question I have a 97 Jeep Cherokee XJ 5 speed swap two wheel drive how do I convert it to 4 wheel drive please
You still kept the cv shaft?
Mmmm DP. Were you upset when Dublin closed its doors or are you like me and prefer the new DP?
ok so i watch the show 2 things abought the 231 an 242 if you want an you should u can use light weight Full Synthetic Motor Oil aka 0w30 works awesome on the 231 an 242 wount evaporated like tranny fluid an 2on like i noted below if you have a 5.2 the input shaft same spline count longer input shaft
please explain! because I didn't understand. I want to do the same thing to my 96 zj. I have an 89 xj 231 t case already. Can I use it ?
If i'm going to pull it why not do a slip yoke eliminator? I guess its not a cheap jeep then.
+Bryan Krall sye and new driveshaft take up half the budget
BleepinJeep finally did one on my wrangler after having a skid drop for years, it drives a lot better! I used the Tera flex supper short eliminator with a flange and custom drive shaft; wasn't the cheapest but worked out good.
I need some help my 1994 s10 blazer has blown the heater core how do I bypass it
Mike Dwyer on the firewall there should be two hoses next to each other that are for the heater core. If you take those hoses off the firewall and run them together that should bypass it.
Bert Morlas thank u man is it OK to use one hose
Yea either connect the two hoses together or follow them to the engine and use one hose to connect the two fittings
Bert Morlas OK thank u so much man
No problem
Did he just kick a transfer case out.... R. I. P transfer case casing
This won't last we already did this swap it will blow that transfer apart after while
So I have a 2000 XJ that has some Transfer case issues, basically the front drive shaft broke free at the yoke and grenaded the transfer case front casting, all internal components are still good and viable. Like many on here we've all read the articles about pulling a used case from another XJ, or even an TJ of ZJ, changing the input gear and boom Bobs your uncle. Excuse my ignorance, but what is the purpose of doing this?
Carter S chicks man
Carter S 249 t case sucks. It's full time 4wd with a viscous coupling that fails and leaves you with 2wd.. Or in my case, it locks up completely. I would've uses a different case than they did personally.
elesjuan which case you will use? I'm looking to do this to my 98 zj 5.9
I have a 96 zj . And swapped out the 249 for a 242! Total difference. Way better when you have the option to put it in 2wd
danny armenta did you swap out the input shafts?
this would be better if titled "NP249 to NP231 T-Case Swap *Time-Lapse* - Operation Cheap Jeep"
The music is killin me 😂😂😂😂😂😂 🌮🤠🤡
If you play this video at 1.25 times the speed the song kinda sounds like an old super Mario game. (Well the first song at least)
Dare I hear My Summer Car?
Quick question. with your np231, was the input shaft shorter than the input on the 249? I’ve been researching and they say online to swap the shaft which sounds like a pain. Anyway to avoid that mess?
I expect a burnout now. 2wd V8 Jeep burnies. MMMMMMmmmmm
But......I subscribed for the stupid commentary......I mean that's the best part...
Sorry Matt but IMHO that was a lot of work for a step backwards in traction control. 🥴
invest in some cat litter
👍🏽
Fuckin music freaks me out.. plus I'm super baked watching this.. Just creepy man
Would have been great if you actually talked people through it. Like wasn't that the point?🤔😅
