6:56-- WHY NOT, DAINTY JUNE?!!" Absolutely hilarious...and the look on Leigh Ann Larkin's face (as if to say, "really?"), as well as that entire closing speech is hysterical. The first time I ever saw a truly droll portrayal of June-as-adolescent-knowing this-act is terrible. Just great.
ahahah benanti, ya got me! "moomoo moo moo" XD also, larkin on "she starts to dance" 2:46 on DANCE, do you guys hear the amazingness?!! her vibrato is phenomenal. sjblock-esque. wow.
When June Havoc (the real Baby June) was interviewed, all she had to say about "Gypsy" was: "I was a solo act. There was never anyone on stage with me."
She was a headliner and a big child star and never did kiddie competition shows. There are a number of photos of her with the younger boys, billed as Baby June and her Newsboy Songsters, and also photos of her in numbers with the grown up boys. She did appear with Rose's boys for sure, but she never appeared in amateur kiddie shows and that being in the musical was a big hurt for her.
I suppose the dancer's top hat came off intentionally so that Rose could run on and give it back to him... Otherwise, MAJOR props to Patti for taking her impromptu cue on that one!!!
yes, that is part of the original Jerome Robbins choreography. The two boys dropping their canes is not in the original choreography and I hate it. It spoils the hat drop and pushes the point too hard.
In every production during this number, Rose always comes onstage to fix the set, or the boys if they drop something, and she usually copies the choreography when doing so.
it's on the original Jerome Robbins choreography. The one boy who deliberately dropped his cane at the same time, was not in the original chorie... not was another cane drop, but having been added for this production. The one hat drop was enough. The other two were overkill on the idea.
A friend of mine once said amateurs should never do "Gypsy" if only because of this number: most non-professional orchestras co not have the skill to play the tricky and beautiful dance break music to save their lives, and if you don't have an absolutely first-rate Dainty June--who can convince you she's enormously gifted despite the awfulness of the act--then not much is really at stake in her mother's later decision. What I love about this is that not only is Leigh Ann Larkin a genuine musical star, but she's hilarious.( the funniest dainty June ever)
Correct. and too many amateur companies try and do the Robbins choreography. with not that great results. I was in the original Australian production which was a reproduction of the Lansbury production, and this was one of my dream numbers. It pushes Rose's choreographic abilities and the style of the day so perfectly. I always loved doing the Robbins choreography, reproduced and adapted here by the legendary Betty Pounder. My disappointment in this version is that the boys don't have that quick change which also adds to the fun and theatricality of the number. I also feel the dropping of canes TWICE is pushing things too far. Tulsa loosing his hat is enough. Dropping two canes just spoils that touch.
Leigh Ann Larkin is absolutely amazing in everything she does!!! Go see A Little Night Music while you still have a chance. Bernadette Peters isn't too bad either lol
There is something sparse about this production. I think the set design is hidious in the burlesque house scenes and the If Mama was Married scene... there just seems to be little bits of furniture....with a blank backdrop..........
Leigh Ann Larkin was disconcerting as Dainty June. Her voice makes her sound as old as Rose. I wanted her to pitch her voice higher to sound more age appropriate for the role. The timbre of her voice is too low and dark for Dainty June. The timbre is darker than Patti's!!!

Leigh Ann Larkin totally deserved a Tony nomination for this ... a totally wonderful and different take on the character ... I loved it!
I love how Leigh Ann makes you believe that she is June and that June is tired of singing those songs and trying to pleasing Mamma Rose. LOVED IT!
One of the best "Dainty Junes" by far! She made this character all her own for sure! :)
Leigh Ann Larkin’s voice is a powerhouse. Absolutely incredible belting. So effortless
ahahah benanti, ya got me! "moomoo moo moo" XD also, larkin on "she starts to dance" 2:46 on DANCE, do you guys hear the amazingness?!! her vibrato is phenomenal. sjblock-esque. wow.
Leigh Ann Larkin is awesome - totally one of the most underrated performers working on the stage right now imo.

crowe bobby I’ve seen this comment before...

@@kevincoxhead7137 You're right. It was still one of the best musicals off all time . . . poetic license included.
Leigh Ann Larkin is definitely my favourite as June.
omg i remember when my school did this play, the cows head fell off HILARIOUS THO
Louise as the cow is just me...just can't be bothered anymore
OMG. Laura's Moos kill me every single time. Thanks for posting this!
she'd be great as glinda in wicked ... I could just see her being hysterical in "popular"
BUT LAURAS MOOING THOUGHHHHH
CANT say it enough, PERFECT CAST

WHY NOT DAINTY JUNE?? to be honest that's the best line in the show
The look she gives after he says that is priceless
Did Patti improv that part with putting the hat on the dancers head?
If so that was really good.
She's a genius.

My mom played as dainty June once! I loved watching this with her
Ma-moo ma-moo at 2:13!
I love the way the assistent talks. Every show (or rather, the good ones) she speaks in the same way xD
Leigh Ann walked away with this entire production. PHENOMENAL talent.
Not me just realizing the whole number is a metaphor for how desperately June wants to leave the act.
yes benanti!

DAMN! 5:25 Girl has a BIG voice! Incredible!
WHY NOT DAINTY JUNEEEEE lmaooooo
RespectMyThickness ikr...it's just me pleading at life
love this number! aw i miss gypsy so much thanks for posting!

This is the funniest thing ever and is probably the best part of the show
I've been cast as Yonkers for our college production today. And Mr. Weber.
Wish I could see the whole show...
Ma Moo Ma Moo!
She is sooooo much better here! :) good job june!
moo moo, moo moo.
Yes. The movie used the original staging and choreography by Jerome Robbins
june reminds of carol or lucy
.
that was amazing, made y day just a little better lol
No one moos better than Laura Benanti! It’s the perfect blend of being dead inside while still pathetically trying😂
@fiddleriddler How can we see the whole show?
I was wondering if I could get the whole show my friend Lenor Nemetz is in it and I would like to see her in gotta get a gimmick
Is there anyway I could get the entire show?! I'm thinking about doing a scene from the show for my directing class
LAURA BENANTI IS HILARIOUS AS THE MOO-ER
what yr was this
Leigh Ann Larkin is funnier and more talented than the whole current cast of SNL put together, including Kristen Wiig.
It's part of the staging.
full show available?
Was the guy who kept messing up Louise?
probably so lol
I'm pretty sure she's dressed up as the cow. XD
Laura was actually offstage doing the moos into a curtain, but I'm not sure who was in the cow.
No. tradtionally it's Tulsa who looses his hat. Louise is supposed to be the front end of the cow.
@phant0m0fthe0pera7
No, thats in every show.
Ma moo ma moo
The moo-ing from June and Louise is the best part of this song.
I love Lenora Nemetz
I think it was the moos that won Laura Benanti the Tony.
mah moo mah moo......hehehe
@theatrecr8zy Yeah she reminds me of Megan Hilty
the girl playing louise was in another with a cow the 2002 into the woods
@paintcan4 What are you talking about?

That's the whole point. The routine is old and tired and they're too old to be doing it.
@@ZoraCatone No, it's a new act. The one Rose dreams about in the hotel room scene, a few scenes before it.
