Highlights of Mourning Doves from Eggs to Fledgling Chicks

  • Highlights (from many hours of video) of a pair of mourning doves as they raise their chicks and send them off. See the parents raise a brood of chicks (squabs) and encourage them to leave the nest.
During the first 14 days, both parents take turns sitting on the two eggs, with almost constant occupation of the nest. And then during the next 14 days, both parents will feed the squabs by bringing up a milk-like substance produced by glands in their throat. The squabs will feed by reaching up into the parents mouth. After a few days, the "milk" will be augmented with seeds. After one week the squabs fill the nest and soon the parents don't fit anymore in the nest. The squabs will start stretching their wings and preening more as they get ready for life on their own.
    Enjoy the video!
    1:30 First egg hatches
2:20 First feeding of the squab
    2:40 Second egg hatches
3:10 Day 3 continues with more feeding
4:50 Squabs have grown a lot
5:50 Parents start to announce feeding times
7:10 Cooing becomes more prominent with squabs
9:30 Squabs are encouraged to get out of the nest
10:10 Parents start to call the squabs from outside the nest
10:55 First squab leaves the nest
11:25 Second squab leaves the nest but is called back to the nest
12:00 Parents leave the nest and call to the remaining squab
12:40 Life outside of the nest

Sometimes I just wonder if they ever meet or reunite somewhere after they all leave the nest.

I have a nest in the top corner of my porch. Today, I noticed that a baby (not sure how old but def stretching wings but not yet able to fly), and I'm not sure if it fell out of the nest or what to do. There is one in the nest that seems to be a bit bigger than the one on the porch. There has been a parent every day in the nest except today but have been close. Do I leave the baby on the porch (it found a safe spot under a table on my porch) and has been cuddled up there since I noticed it out of the nest. Do I leave it or put it back in the nest?

This is so cute! I have a couple with their babies outside my window on the fire escape.. I couldnt help it and had to touch them when they were alone🥹 Theyre about 9-10 days but Idk how theyll learn to fly here theres no trees or bushes just fire escapes and the garage😕

I have to fledglings already they almost 1 month old i cannot believe they are flying already and already on solid foods mostly berries and fruits for now hard or soft. Their mom and dad lay another egg and kick them out the nest I sometimes see them still feeding them which is cute based off how big they are.

2 days ago, there was a mourning dove in my garage (Day 13 size). It was flying all around the garage, but not getting out. Initially, I thought it was a big bird and let her out. But she had a small flight and sitting in my front yard, couldn't fly higher. Then googled and found it is baby and immediately went and took her back inside. Baby is not eating by herself, so I need to boil grains and grind them and fed her. Not sure what to do now. To leave her outback or to grow her until she is big and change it to an adult color.

Hopefully the baby dove survived! Sorry I don't have experience with taking care of baby birds!
