Saw this spectacularly sung production in the early 1980s. One of my rare opportunities to see--and hear--Freni, whom I adore. Recent French version at Met not so great, I hear.
Domingo is just ok, vocally. Dramatically. He is superb. Freni is wonderful . And she looks the part.. a young wife who falls for a young king. Interesting opera.. with rich roles... Two superb bass roles.. a marvelous baritone role.. wonderful mezzo role and a great tenor role.. superb composition
Don Carlo. A very... interesting... puzzling... rich five course meal. Where the title character is hardly in it. Where the ending can mean nearly anything. Where Don Carlo is made to suffer with no relief for him or the rest of us. When I see the Great Domingo do that scene over and over, I ache all over for him. His acting is so good and it's clear he subsumes himself in this role. The bells in his voice... wow. He was so very good in his 1978 version too. Sometimes when he lost weight, he would overshoot his goal, crikey. Mil gracias por compartir.
Yes, one way of looking at Domingo's acting is that he subsumes his self into or under the role. Another way is that his self actually BECOMES the person while he is singing the role. Maybe there is no difference. A great actor can do it either way. Anyway, bravo the great Placido.
The severely raked were definitely annoying. I wanted to throw them a grappling hook sometimes. But they have to be a raked about 4-5 degrees at least so floor seats can see whatever is the action allllll the way in the back.
Domingo is superb in this role, my god. Freni is overparted here (the usually golden voice has become tremulous with the effort) and is dramatically challenged to create the character.
@@starlove7474 sorry I agree with the OP, she sadly sounds like overparted here. Closeup mic or not, Domingo sounds fine. Maria Boccanegra is as far as she should have gone..
@@Orfeus80 I think Don Carlo was a good role for Domingo. Dramatic, without being too exposed up on top. I actually enjoy Freni as Elisabetta, for similar reasons that I enjoy her Manon (Puccini). The role not right for her voice, but I can hear (and see) her using every trick she has up her sleeves to get through the music, and I think she does so as healthily as she can. In other words, I can really appreciate her technical intelligence here. I also think it's more successful than her Aida and (especially) Elvira.
@Eric Cheng Freni gave a few lessons of how to survive roles not right for one's voice. But at the same time, schooled an entire generation of singers that they should aspire for these bigger parts. What's wrong with finding roles that suit you?
@@Orfeus80 True, true. I get why one would get bored with all the so-called little girl roles though. And I sympathize with the desire for lyric voices to sing heavier repertory!
Buon ascolto, Carlo Colombo
I regret so much not having learned Italian. I know some words and can discern the meaning, almost, from listening to and singing opera, but I wish so much I could I understand everything you wrote. Alas.
@@shirleyrombough8173 thanks for Your appreciation, I will try to translate my previous comment: in my opinion, very good rendering estetically from both of them.. Domingo, as we know, has always been an outstanding Don Carlo (like in an other performance with Montserrat Caballe). One little remarque: Freni is acting rightly close enough to her partner when she has to ascertain “ life already vanishes from his eyes”, meanwhile in another rendition of this phrase Daniela Dessì stays unrealistically far from Pavarotti.

Away pass years and this performance is as fresh as yesterday...the greats! 🌹💖 Freni and Domingo at the MET with crazy gifted Maestro Levine.

Awesome Domingo! Great performance.
My favorite opera and this production is the best! Thank you my dear friend!
Ok, but try Mitropoulos MDM Cerquetti Bastianini christoff: unbeatable in my opinion
RIP la grande a bella Mirella
Bella....mmm...
Grandissimo Domingo!!!
Just wonderful and that ending from Mirella from 08:25 just amazing. Domingo not bad either :) RIP Mirella xx
I'm so glad raked stages are starting to disappear. That's one fad I can do without. Beautiful singing here. Thanks for sharing!

Funny - that is exactly the part I love most about this dust. pparently not only me!
esecuzione di altissimo livello
maravillosos ambos
DOMINGO IS EXCELLENT
Super!
Topone cantava bene. Mirellona sempre Mia adoratissima
Mi piace anche Moldoveanu, ma Domingo....❤

I was there standing behind the last row of the house and she sounded magnificent. Don't be fooled by the recording mic up close.

No Domingo
Aragall better than Domingo in D. Carlo.
Mirella bel timbro ma dizione scarsa.Non si capisce una parola
Dislike for Domingo. Constricted voice throughout~ the low range is horrendous!
