How can anyone with a heart give this performance a thumb-down? Carreras is sublime and the soprano is wonderful: they're supposed to be YOUNG people!!

Fiamma certainly had the looks to do this role and a glorious voice.......but these heavy roles at merely 22 did her in. But what a performance from Carreras!
her acting is superb and fully conveys the meaning of the drama: Carlos loves her and is unable to contain his feelings; she tries to keep him at a distance, that's why she's so “wooden". A groan breaks through this restraint: Oh, Carlo! And the end of this wonderful duet: when Elizabeth sees that Carlos cannot be kept, and she herself is exhausted in the struggle with herself, she screams in hysterics: go, kill your father, desecrate his bed. And only these terrible words stop Carlos. Amazing psychological drawing of the role and amazing acting.
I firstly came to know this aria from Callas and Di Stefano's latest records and I was left very impressed by the profundness and sadnesse presented here. It's general understand that the widely famous couple wasn't at their best moment vocally speaking very late in their career nonetheless I thought they managed to deliver such a great performance that I got in love with the duetto instantaneously and now here it's so touching and beautiful that I'm even more touched and passionated with this opera than ever, thank you

Izzo is a hidden gem of the 80s, she's a glorious Elisabetta, the phrasing is idiomatic and her lyric soprano responds well to the spinto/dramatic demands of the role. Pity she didn't stay active longer to record a few things in studio and give us the classic Italian repertoire. She could have joined Dessi in succeeding the great Chiara, Freni, Maliponte and Ricciarelli.
Another comment, opera is a compliment of acting and singing, but before, way...way...before acting, is voice - as Verdi said...opera is the voice and only the voicce- and he was true. In an scenario you can not hardly see the singers, i mean,up to a point of seeing their acting skills, emotions, tears, jejeje. You just have to hear their voices and their voices need to say what there feelings are. When you are in a big opera house, you just need to hear the voice and what the voice its transmitting and how the voice fullfil a big theatre. Hear you say, carreras was acting...she doesn't act....common. 😅

She gave up singing after a couple of years to bring up her two daughters. She has been directing operas in her home town. She is a great loss to international Opera.
She.was another victim of. Von. Kajaran? He likes to used those lyrics sopranos in. Verdi Repertoire,and in.a couple of years their voices Are gone!! I think she was one of them.
She ended up dubbing films in italy. She destroyed her voice to young, due to what ever reason. But she sang a very poor Don Carlo. And the reason is that she was too young and her voice structure was not yet developed. How can anyone say that... Well, I dont want to argue, just say, that she was not at its age to do that. And she ended up, the way she ended up. Carreras was at its best, but not her, common people. Im an old guy yet, and opera has been kiled by people who dont know shit, applaud everything.
