  • There is so much to explore in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range and specifically Sequoia National Park. It’s not just about General Sherman. The park was founded in 1890 and comprises one of the largest roadless wilderness area in the united states, and if you want to have a bit of solitude, you can find it in this park. In September of 2022 we set up to explore Miter Basin via Cottonwood Pass. It was a 12 plus mile hike in, but well worth the effort to camp two nights in one location.
From the 395 the road to Horseshoe Meadow climbs over 6,000 feet, up to 10,000. And then we go up from there.it’s always nice to spend a day adjusting to the altitude, but I drove in that night, slept in my car and started hiking up to the cottonwood pass. To say the least it was a tough hike for me, but like all trips, I’m always glad I made the effort.
Total mileage for our trip was 32.4 miles with 4159 feet of elevation gain.

Great video! I did that exact trip just before you guys in early September. My tent was even on the same spot on that peninsula on Lower Soldier’s Lake. That little pond as you enter Miter Basin just blew my mind. What a place

I really want to go back and spend more time in that area. We loved Miter and Soldier Lake. But the Altitude kicks my butt!

@@AdventureMuse I used Diamox for the altitude. It’s not magic but definitely decreases the chances of acute mountain sickness.

You didn't go up to Sky Blue and Irridescent Lakes? They are the highlights of the basin, and easy to reach!!!

Our friends did. I was kind of sick from the altitude 😩 I really need to acclimate better

That is not columnar basalt. It's fractured granite.. There is some volcanic rock and a little columnar basalt to the southwest, around Little Whitney Meadow, Natural Bridge, and Volcano Creekreek, and where Golden Trout Creek spill into the Kern Canyon, but none here. You're referring to "Devil's Postpile," about 150 miles north, near mammoth Lakes.

Thanks for the info. It kind of reminded me of devils postpile by mammoth. Either way, it was a beautiful rock formation.

Yes, it's part of a very pretty view looking out across the Kern Basin- the largest tract of relatively gentle high country in all the Sierra. My favorite old stomping grounds! Cheers, tom@@AdventureMuse
