    I didn’t see a specific answer regarding the pass, but yes, there is an easier scree chute straight down the center, though not that apparent from above. What you ended up doing was definitely spicier, but you made it down just fine, so, it must also have been the way ;) From the north-west corner of the lake, you can go straight up to Discovery Pinnacle, which is the southern endpoint of the Whitney crest. It’s a long scree slog fest, but the views are epic!

    • @NorwegianXplorer
      @NorwegianXplorer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome, first response I have gotten to the question lol, I was considering climbing up to Discovery but Inwas meeting my friends down on the PCT so I had to go down that direction. Would have been cool to go up that route though.

    Wonderful job. Unbelievable extra effort for walk bys. I watched because I'm looking for new adventures. After watching your Crabtree Pass crossing, I'm not going to attempt it. About to get my right hip replaced, and have already replaced my left knee. Just too sketchy for this old body. But Sky Blue Lake and even the lakes above look doable.
    I did a bit of the Big SEKI loop in 2019 before getting turned back by the snow on Colby Pass. I thought Colby Lake was about as pretty as it gets, though it's hard to beat the Rae Lakes area.

    • @NorwegianXplorer
      @NorwegianXplorer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey David, yeah that Crabtree pass was a bit more scary than I anticipated, although it is not technical at all. You could easily go up to the lakes, no problems there.

    Another fantastic video. Miter Basin has intrigued me for some time. I wish I had explored it from Soldier Lake. When you mention New Army Pass across Sky Blue Lake, I believe the peak on the horizon is Cirque Peak. I summited it once and remember looking across towards the basin and beyond to Mt Whitney.
    Thanks for sharing your journey with us :-)

    • @NorwegianXplorer
      @NorwegianXplorer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @andrewyoung8604
      @andrewyoung8604 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The most prominent peak looking down Miter Basin, though, is Langley; CIrque is to the west, and out of view, I think, at least above Sky Blue Lake. I looked again, at about 16:50 on the video, and Cirque Peak is indeed at the right in the more distant horizon.

Thank u for making it so fun 2 watch!

      I remember doing the Rae Lakes loop and having to do a 25 mile day to be able to complete the loop, recorded the day going from Arrowhead Lake, counter clockwise and ending up at around Charlotte Creek In Bubbs Creek and while recording all the video I averaged 2,5 miles an hour, I would say that I could prob have averaged 3 to 3,5 miles an hour on that stretch without shooting and film. That is a very easy trail though, I think in this video in the Miter Basin I wouldnt have walked very much faster even without filming, the filming gives me breather. I dont use a remote😊

      I confess it took three tries (1st, too far to east, then to the west) to find the route down to Whitney Crest before I found going close to the right of Discovery Pinnacle worked. Obviously didn’t research my trip enough at the time (2015). Don T., did you do 99 switchbacks on the ‘Sand Hill’, or are you referring to the JMT from Guitar Lake? Anyway, for anyone else considering this route to Whitney, yes, be sure to go well-up the little valley westward before turning uphill and east-north-east. See it at about 28-29 minutes in?

    Awesome Jarl. Was eyeing a similar trip to the Miter Basin to climb Mt. Pickering and Mt Mallory but the smoke cancelled the permits. You mentioned a section above soldier lake but below Sky Blue that was no fun. How would you do it differently in hindsight or is it just one of those sections you just have to grunt through? Magnificent basin. I definitely will do a trip there to fish and do some summit seeking...

    • @NorwegianXplorer
      @NorwegianXplorer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, that section was prob ok in hindsight, it was a combination of the smoke getting really bad, the weather getting really hot, bushwacking down from upper soldier lake and this being the end of the day after summiting to Mt Langley. The route is from the upper end of lower Soldier Lake and up a grassy chute and takes some work, nothing technical though. I think the normal trail is down in the valley itself and doesnt go up and through the chute.

      I used the scree-way going down & back two days later. Not great, but the bouldering kept driving me back to the scree. It requires some serious way-finding and patience to get up from SB Lake to the Pass. But the Crabtree Lake side is at least much more obvious.

    I have watched most of your Norwegian and Swedish videos and am just starting on your American adventures. Just one question. Considering the terrain you always travel, why do you not use trekking poles? I can see how they might not work on big boulders but they sure help balance and help take pressure off the back.

    • @NorwegianXplorer
      @NorwegianXplorer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trekking poles are in the way and mess with the strenght and balance of my legs, you will build better core balance and leg strenght without them. Most people dont agree with me on this one, but the ones I hike with the most do.

    I love your vids! They help me get through the day!
    One thing though. While I can appreciate why everyone has ads on youtube, I wish it could be toned down just a little here. This is just my opinion of course, but I feel like it damages the beautiful space you've worked so hard to create.
    It's only a small bother though (I should probably shell out for a premium youtube subscription and shut up!)
