    64 years ago I was one of these new Plebes. I-Day was only a taste of what was to come. I've told young men who've already got their appointments that no matter how fit and ready they THINK they are, they have NO IDEA what they're about to experience. That wasn't meant to discourage them, but rather to give 'em a "been there , done that" heads up. Nobody has ever told me I was wrong
    Something every Plebe soon recognizes is that despite the fact that, coming in, they're way over on the right side of the probability curve with respect to their contemporaries around the country, they're now somewhere else under another curve -- with their new Classmates -- ALL of whom were way over to the right side with you before they took the oath.

      The Naval Academy helped keep ND open during the Second World War by re-locating many of their midshipmen upperclassmen there to attend classes during the week and do training at Glenview NAS and Great Lake NAS in the Chicago Area on weekends. Most of ND's students enlisted during the war. This is the main reason ND and Navy are close and will always play each other every football season.

    I've seen other videos that indicate graduating midshipmen generally select a ship for service. But in this video, I saw one of the trainers identified as an ensign. I'm wondering how an ensign winds up on USNA training duty and is it a personal selection or a recommendation/order based on the ensign being observed to have helped fellow classmen in nailing down basic concepts?

    • @brucemacsr.6776

      They're placed wherever the Navy wants them. When it comes to choosing ships, only midshimpen going into specific fields like SWO get to choose exactly where they go

    • @Pupda
      @Pupda 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      nicolas perales - basically, you’re correct. They’re actually “placed” where they want based on overall class standing if there are enough openings available, which is generally the case. In my day the only selection that ever ran out was pilot, though I think nowadays Marine Corps may also run out (Marines, including Marine Air, were limited to 1/6 of the class back in the day, I think that it’s now 1/5?). But you’re right in that the “needs of the Navy” always prevail, followed by availability and finally personnel preferences; just that, at this level, usually the first two don’t play a major part. The rest of your career, they do....
      They choose their specialty (surface., subsurface, aviation, Marine Corps, etc) based on class standing. Aviation personnel (pilots, NFOs) and submariners traditionally choose only a class date; they have another year or more of training to go, and final specific assignment will happen while they’re in that training and that will depend, especially for the aviators, on how they do in those schools. For the surface warriors, they do choose a specific ship (and I think this now is a separate event from service selection) in conjunction with a specific reporting date; because the surface warfare course is relatively short they can do this since they’re not looking too far into the future (and currently I believe the surface officers go directly to their first ships without going to school - an experiment which, in light of recent collisions at sea, etc, may not be a great idea....).
      Finally, in regards to the original question, virtually every ensign and second lieutenant involved in Plebe Summer training is, as previously mentioned, on temporary duty while awaiting their school dates in Pensacola, Charleston, or Quantico. The professional schools could not possibly handle the entire output of the Naval Academy as well as the ROTC and OCS programs at one time - Annapolis represents only about 1/5 of the annual officer accession, and pretty much everyone graduates college at the same time. So the reporting dates for the warfare specialty schools are staggered over about six months and in the interim, the new officers are assigned some (hopefully) useful tempoary job. Generally if you have a specific background that’s where you’ll instruct - for example, sailing and rifle team members usually but not always teach sailing and shooting.

      No, it's called discrimination. It is illegal in the Fed Gov't. When did you get a brainectomy?

    I spent a painstakingly long amount of time applying to this place. And what do I get as a result? A half-assed, computer-generated rejection letter. I respect the navy and other branches of the military, but god damn, at least send out individualized emails that tell us why we weren't qualified to attend the Naval Academy; not some generic email that gets sent to all the rejects.

      Too much time and money. They've got the incoming class to worry about, not the rejects. Sorry to be so harsh, but that's the truth

      Possibly the Congressman who nominated you could enquire on your behalf. I rather doubt the admissions board pays attention to complaints on TH-cam :D

      Caleb Hammons you can go from enlisted to the academy. I am an active duty sailor and I leave for the prep school in July. (Hints why I’m watching this video) I never thought I would have a shot because I wasn’t focused in high school. It’s possible tho! Reach out to your chain of command for support

    The Chiefs run the ships these people are really clueless. Glad to say I was never on a ship with women. Why do they shave the men hair & not the women? Crossing the line is over you can't spank a women.

      From the looks of thing all they have now is fairy boats. Getting run over by cargo ships. Remember when Iran captured those two gun boats. their was the crew on the news half of them crying like little bitches. God helps us if their another war, I seen firing guns at remote targets pitiful..

      No they reduce boot camp to day care. non hackers every last one of you. Can't even save your self from cargo ships. nothing but little no thinking bots has to be told everything. In the old days you replace the barrel. Now go get a bucket of prop wash & get to work.
