- With Lab Coat 21 running rampant in Dragon Ball FighterZ, the fighting game community is asking themselves one question: What makes a fighting game character bannable? In this video, we take a look at five fighting game characters who have been banned in the past to answer that question.

The timing is impeccable. XD Labcoat was just announced to be banned on ceo and wanted. CB was one of the best dbfz tournament I watched despite 21 tho xD
I literally could not have asked for better timing.
Lab Coat 21 is nuts, and she dominated CB, but I appreciated the crowd chanting "DEEEEEEEEEEEBUUUFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF" whenever it happened in those final sets.
A21 was banned in Australia and the overwhelming reason for the ban was because no one wanted top 8 to take 21% longer.
In hindsight, Smash 4 Bayonetta. I know at the time I was personally on the "do not ban and learn the match-up" side, but looking at Smash 4 in hindsight, even after the one balance patch to nerf her she was still head and shoulders above the rest of the cast. It seemed bad at the time to ban her cause hey they did patch her, and she wasn't as bad and Brawl Meta Knight, so why should we ban her when the much more broken character was not?

I think that a very important thing being ignored here is the fact that historically characters were banned in games pre-patch era.
The existance of patches make so it's possible to have a tier SSS character without it getting banned, since people know that it will eventualy be nerfed.
But what people that don't play FighterZ doesn't seem to know, is that A21 Labcoat was added AFTER THE LAST balance patch for the entire game, which means that A21 would destroy the competitive scene for FighterZ for his entire lifetime, like in the pre-patch era games.
Thanks to the effort of the community, bandai announced a hotfix to nerf A21, saving FighterZ competitive scene for the rest of the game's life.
It's not the final balance patch, it was never stated to be. The video even posts the tweet that says they're working on one post release.
It FEELS like the last one because outside of that one tweet, bandai have been completely silent on what's going on with the game. No details on new content, when that mentioned patch is coming, ect.

And the tweet you saw in the video is the announcement of the hotfix for A21 Labcoat.
@@kelvinspencer9265 I'd like to have an actual post on where this was stated because I cant see anything stating this.
Also the tweet says "game balance update including labcoat 21" so unless they were explicitly talking about all the game modes themselves, that sounds like a balance patch to me.
@@richardblack6353 It was explicitly said by Hiroki, the producer for FighterZ, that after the launch of Gogeta SSJ4 we would have one more balance patch that would be the final. That patch is the August 10th mega-patch.
This new patch exclusively exists because of the A21 problem and we don't know yet if the other characters will recieve changes, the only character explicitly said to be changed in this patch is A21, this never happened before.
Kakyoin's ban was an interesting one, as unlike petshop, his ban was a pretty big topic of discussion and was very recent, i don't think he was banned until 2020. The real reason he was banned wasn't even necessarily his power, just that he was hurting the competetive scene with how common he was. People got sick of him, and he was hard to fight.

FYI he recently was put into police custody by the new governor under corruption charges, and while in jail awaiting his trail he got health problems and right now it's on a delicate state on the hospital after 2 surgeries.

coolest thing about the kak ban is that it's so recent, that if you watch the weeklies zarythe used to throw you actually get to see just how dominant he is, which isn't that common for most banned characters that get caught early in the game's life
I got 4/5 right from the silhouettes, but I thought Noob Saibot was Old Sagat. Dang.
I toyed with making Noob's shadow pure white as a gag which might've helped you out a bit

I'd love to see Justice in Guilty Gear Missing Link, she invalidates most of the cast with one move, has the potential to timer scam, among other broken aspects.
@@mibeador She was on the initial list, but decided to save her for a follow up on this topic if this video does well enough. Though IIRC, she's not banned in Missing Link according to the Dustloop wiki
@@Holdbacktoblock she was banned in the first tournament we had but we're thinking to let her in the next one. The top 4, notably Millia and Baldhead, fight her well enough, it's just that there's a lot of characters who can't deal with her because their movement or normals aren't good enough
Meta knight he is a great bar since he was almost banned and was for some time. But got reversed because of player base
Hilde was also banned from SC4

Originally I was going to cover Meta Knight, but I feel they need a whole video to themselves due to everything surrounding that character. Might do that in the future!
Meta Knight and Kabal (mk9) strike me as more equivalent to labcoat and prepatch luke. Not so obviously good they MUST be banned, like say akuma/rugal, but still 6/4 or better vs the cast to the point that it's starting to make it feel like NOT picking them is just wrong. There will of course be other characters with more polarizing matchups, but these "good at everything" characters cause a lot of issues for competitive scenes when variety just can't thrive.

But seriously, thank you for not only talking about HFTF, but with a more updated knowledge on the game. I do wish you mentioned how nets can only be broken by "stand" attacks, and eat up your entire hit rather than say Testament, who only removes one active frame from the attack. And the fact that nets are essentially a meterless roman cancel since they recover so fast. Coupled with his huge normals and crazy mobility, this is what truly pushes him over the edge as it allows him to control neutral and shut down characters entire gameplans for minimal effort. And as punishing is so important in JoJos, he is both able to keep himself incredibly safe with nets, and capitalize IMMENSELY on mistakes, since nets open up Touch of Death levels of damage for combos.
I'll keep that in mind for the future! I def want to do more stuff on HFTF in the future as it's one of my favorite titles that I know little about competitively and your videos were invaluable in making this script.
Just to add on, a lot of kakyoins stand on normals are net cancelable, making them safe while putting down a net which is hella insane

It must suck spending days making a sick as fuck tool set for a character only for some player to find a way to utterly break the game with that tools etc leading to throngs of fans absolutely trashing your work.

This was an entertaining and well edited video, but I felt like it should have explained why Lab Coat 21 is banned. I'm also surprised not to see Metaknight on the list.
She wasn't banned before I uploaded this video this morning, but I could've elaborated more on her. Will keep it in mind for the future. Meta Knight will probably get its own video in the future.

Apparently Soul Calibur 2 Necrid has an infinite with his unblockable which is why he was banned. But, I don't think I've found anything to support this claim
Yeah I couldn't find much on that either. There was lots of back and forth in old forums about it and lots of tall tales stemming from the ban, but most current SC2 players I talked with think he's pretty weak.

The idea is to let the viewer come to their own conclusion using the examples provided. I personally don't think she should be banned because of the upcoming patch, but that's just my opinion.
