  • Welcome to our seventh episode on the Timeline of Elden Ring - the Night of the Black Knives. A thorough Lore video covering the unrest across the Lands Between both before and after the coup. Marika, Ranni, Godwyn, Maliketh, and many others, as well as the knock on effects that led up to the Elden Ring being broken... There is of course lots of uncertainty and speculation, as with any attempt to make an Elden Ring timeline, so this is all just our own theory!

Episode 8 is available NOW to Hawk Lord supporters of the channel!
Penultimate episode! The night of black knives feels like the key event that set off the chain of events ultimately causing our own character to enter the Lands Between, but even for Fromsoft it's a pretty difficult event to parse. We hope you enjoy our interpretation, and let us know your thoughts and theories!

One thing I never even considered with the DLC is the likelihood of us finding other Great Runes and what powers they may have. We are still missing parts of the sigil.

I’ve been wondering about Ranni’s true involvement for a while now because not everything sits right. For example, Rogier’s whole questline is about him unraveling the conspiracy, and even when Ranni gives us a confession, which a lot of detectives would call a slam dunk, he claims “not all would believe such a tale” and he still tries to dig deeper and look for even more answers by finding the smoking gun(Cursemark). It’s always been weird to me that she’s hesitant about the Cursemark but not admitting to the murder? Even at the fact that Rogier doesn’t completely buy it when she offers a confession after we invaded her home when we know she could kill us in the blink of an eye.

It's because the Night of Black Knives as a whole was organized by the Greater Will, with Alecto as the Ringleader; Ranni was simply used to enchant their daggers and then set aside to later become the replacement of Marika, which is why she only admits to stealing the Rune of Death and forging the Black Knives through "fearsome rite". The Night of Black Knives was always intended as a means of eliminating Godwyn, destroying the Golden Order, and even killing Marika if possible, evidenced by the assassins being present in Marika's bedchambers; but what was NOT intended was Ranni creating an extra blade and using it on herself, evidenced by Ranni's own description of the events.
"..I would not acquiesce to the Two Fingers.
I stole the Rune of Death,
      slew mine own Empyrean flesh,
      casting it away.
I would not be controlled by that thing.
The Two Fingers and I have been cursing each other ever since..."
Ranni blatantly admits that the conspiracy was one involving the Two Fingers and that her actions during the Night were done in spite of the Two Fingers and it's wants, leaving it angry. Even if the assassins had managed to kill both Marika and Godwyn on the NoBK, effectively overthrowing Marika's Golden Order, it would have been left without an immediate replacement. That is how Ranni's actions were ultimately in defiance rather than in cooperation.
As for why she hesitates about the giving us Cursemark, well it's leverage for one and two there may well be a chance that completing the Cursemark on Ranni's body would have resulted in her Soul dying as well; that's Fia's whole plan with Godwyn after all. But without speculation, Ranni needs the Fingerslayer Blade and she's been unsuccessful in locating it, meanwhile we want the Cursemark. It's like "scratch my back and I'll scratch yours", upon offering to serve her she says
      "Thou wouldst render me aid,
      is that thy proposal?
Affording thyself opportunity to grope about for the cursemark's location, no doubt?
      Very well...
      There's nothing wrong with a well-laid scheme.
What's more, if my past and past wounds beckon to thee,
I am curious enough to see what thy destiny portends..."
So our very interest in the Cursemark informs Ranni that we likely have some greater destiny, and our cooperation in recovering the Finger Slayer blade informs her that we are not obedient to the Two Fingers/Greater Will, earning her trust.

      @@Nezxmithis doesn’t acknowledge multiple things
      1. The black knife assassins being (rumored) numen women who had close relation to Marika (who is a numen)
      2. The other Demi-gods killed during the night
      3. Why the Greater Will abandoned the lands between after the golden order fell apart and the shattering war began
I think that Marika orchestrated the creation of the assassins, yearning for not only true freedom from the greater will, but to also become the true god of the lands between. Her similar desire for freedom matching Ranni’s which is why she went to Ranni for help. She killed Godwyn “the golden” because of his significant to the golden order and was likely horrified by the state of his body due to Ranni’s betrayal. Because Ranni betrayed her, she had the black knife assassins find and attempt to kill her.
This doesn’t really explain the other Demi-gods deaths, however, it could be chalked up to those Demi-gods also being important to the golden order.
Basically I think Marika is the mastermind behind many of the events in Elden Ring.

Something that I haven't seen anyone mention; Alecto’s name has significance, being based on Alecto the Erinyes(Furiae/Furies) from Greek myth, implying that Alecto is meant to be representative of a chthonic goddess of vengeance. This ties in with the idea that the BKA are closely tied to Marika, these ties being based upon vengeance for Marika's actions, and they are "chthonic" in the sense that the Eternal Cities are literally underground or “under earth”. The Erinyes are protectors of Oaths and punish those who make false Oaths or go against the "natural order", Marika went against “natural order” by removing Destined Death, Ranni did so by hijacking the NoBK as well as by stealing the Fingerslayer Blade. The Erinyes are also said to be descendants of Nyx, the Goddess of Night (who has also been called Nox) and they’re typically older than the Olympian deities, just like the Numen are said to be older than the Lands Between.
The Two Fingers also have a long history of assassination, ala the Confessors/Roundtable Hold Assassins or Baleful Shadows, it stands to reason that they may use Black Knives when necessary. Assassin’s Reproach and Crepus’ Vial both mention how assassins were sent after Tarnished who “stray from guidance”, if Tarnished are assassinated for not listening then I'd say it's safe to say assume others who don't listen, like Marika or Ranni, would be as well.

Whether any of you believe this to be a possible "true" timeline or not, understand that the story telling and the ability to put together a convincing timeline for all of these events is a monumental task.
I, for one, appreciate Hawkshaw's attention to details and the many "receipts" they choose to give us to solidify their version of this timeline.
Having at least something that helps me reconcile when the shattering took place vs. When the Night of the Black Knives takes place is great to have when thinking about lore implications.
Also, no spoilers, but I really think you guys are on to something with Merika's intentions regarding the shattering as it relates to Godwyn's "death".

I would also add that the plausibility of Melina’s involvement in the Night of the Black Knives deserves some further assessment.
    i) The similarity between the WA of Blade of Calling and Black Knife doesnt seem to be coincidental, especially when the description of the latter refers to the Destined Death so explicitly.
ii) The Prince of Death’s Hallowbrand being found at the Roundtable Hold is a little eyebrow raising because why and how is that brand present there of all places without being detected. I glance at Melina here because she is the first person who leads us to the “spirit” version of the Roundtable, but again this isnt evidence. Just an interesting sequence of events to think about.

I jsut watched a video by T-L-G-T-W that brought up the war of the dragons and how it's likely all the damage to Leyndell happened during that, including the collapse of the entire lower-class district at the front of the gate. This would mean that, when the trailer showed soldiers with Godefroy's (later Godrick's) colors attacking the gate, they must have been unaware that it led to nowhere. This makes the attack all the more pathetic and suggests that, if there was a conspirator within the Capital, it would probably be someone unaware of the state of it. IE, someone who lived underground. IOW, Mohg likely conspired with Godefroy. They had a similar interest in that their ?twins? had a seat on the council but not them.

Godwyn being a part of the plot for himself to be the first of the dead actually makes a lot of sense. His descriptions and reverence in the lore is very Christ-like. We only know what we are told about him, yet have never seen his glory in person. It’s almost as if he died willingly for the sins of his fellow man.
Coincidentally, much like Jesus, he is bigger in death than he is in life. Not that Jesus is a gigantic tree faced monstrosity, but you get where I’m coming from

The only other source I can think of, and I was made aware in a different video (Melina is Marika by Crunchy) there's a cut spell that saw the player able to use that same attack as the flowers. Connections? Not sure, but food for thought

I will readily contend that Melina was NOT "born" post-Erdtree. She is "burned and bodiless", she is ASH, she is a spirit who was not returned to the Erdtree.
Ranni has this to say upon giving us the Lone Wolf Ashes:
"Summon them with it, from ash unreturned to the Erdtree." So those who do not return to the Erdtree are burned and become ash.
So Melina was "born" burned and bodiless, as ash, at the foot of the Erdtree? That doesn't add up, you have to be born and "die" before becoming ash..
There's also the fact that Melina's eye is sealed by the claw-mark from the very beginning of the game, to say she was not previously the GEQ means that this must be explained another way, a way which is not obvious to me. Melina is sealed from the moment we see her and the GEQ is only described as being defeated but NOT truly dead(either by returning to the Erdtree or by being killed by Destined Death), so if it's not Melina where is the GEQ? And why seal Melina with a claw-mark?
Melina is also missing one eye, and where do we get another purple, claw-marked eye? From Gurranq, the Beast Eye, which reads:
"Claw-marked stone eye received from Gurranq, Beast Clergyman.
It is said to tremble when near Deathroot.
The murky violet iris writhes as if alive."
So there's only two purple eyes in the game, both are claw-marked, both are connected to Destined Death either directly or indirectly through seeking Deathroot, and the GEQ obviously had purple eyes. At no point in time is the Rune of Death connected to purple eyes except in the case of the GEQ so it wouldn't make sense to say that Melina's eye became purple AFTER acquiring the Rune of Death, nobody else got purple eyes from it, so this means that Melina's eyes were ALWAYS purple.
Melina even hints at her own past, possibly without intending to, saying:
"I have long observed the Lands Between. This world is in dire need of repair...and *Death...indiscriminate..."*
And then there's the Blade of Calling description:
"Dagger given to one who set out on a journey to fulfill her duty long ago. The power of its former owner, the kindling maiden, is still apparent. The one who walks alongside flame, Shall one day meet the road of Destined Death."
Which is a damn *triple entendre;* it's referring to the GEQ using her Black Flames as a means to channel Destined Death, it's referring to Melina using the Flames of Ruin to begin burning the Erdtree and allow the Tarnished to confront Maliketh to retrieve Destined Death, and it's referring to the Tarnished following the Flame of Frenzy in which they will end up releasing Destined Death and awakening/reawakening Melina as the GEQ. If two of the entendre blatantly involve Melina, and the latter involves Melina becoming/rebecoming the GEQ, it seems rather reasonable to say that the initial entendre is also referring to Melina.
Also this is not the only case of sealing/engraving eyes that we find in game, Ranni's soul is seemingly kept anchored to her doll through the seal on her eye and Marika and Radagon have both Scarseals and Soreseals, which are their engraved eyes. The seals on the Scarseals represent lifelong duty to the gods, while the seals on the Soreseals impart solemn duty in a nearly curse-like manner. There's both evidence of souls being connected to eyes as well as seals influencing the behavior of those with them.
Seems to fit pretty well with the idea that the GEQ was defeated, had her power sealed, and at the same time was given a new purpose by Marika; that purpose VERY LIKELY being to guide the Tarnished to the Frenzied Flame. We know this because Melina blatantly tells us upon reaching the Mountaintops that she is no longer following Marika's intentions, she is acting of her own volition, meaning that burning herself was NOT the plan that Marika intended. If we choose the Frenzied Flame, however, Melina knows exactly what the implications of such a choice would be, almost as if she was pre-instructed..

    • @ackvendor
      @ackvendor 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

The theory is an interesting one but regarding purpose and intent, we might need more evidence. I think Melina being linked to the Gloam Eyed Queen is fairly plausible, I would contend that this link could also be that of a daughter to the GEQ.

    • @Nezxmi
      @Nezxmi 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@ackvendor I'm a bit hesitant to entertain the idea of Melina being the GEQ's daughter. If we dig as far as possible it doesn't seem likely since Melina is named as Marika's daughter in the games files but disregarding that, as it's not in-game info, we are never even given the implication that such a character could exist. We'd be essentially creating a character to fit into a slot that a previously established character could fill all alone, while simultaneously disregarding the established "birth" of Melina. We'd create more questions than answers by the end of it, like where is the GEQ, why does Melina call Marika her "mother", who's Melina's father, etc, etc.
But for whom/what actions do you specifically find evidence of purpose and/or intent to be lacking? I feel as if my explanation of Melina eliminates the most questions possible while also fitting with the established motives of the characters involved but I may well have overlooked something.

    • @ackvendor
      @ackvendor 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@Nezxmi I do agree that it opens more questions on parentage, which is then the timeline of Melina’s birth comes into the picture.
As for evidence, so what you lay out are all instances that connect the circumstances nicely but evidence in this instance would have to be something more explicit and also explanatory about GEQ’s actions and callbacks.

@@ackvendor GEQ's actions pre-defeat are guided by the Two Fingers, as in the case for all chosen Empryeans, and she attempts to overthrow Marika for removing the Rune of Death and creating an Order which names her as the "one true god" in defiance of the Greater Will. Post-defeat she is free of the Two Finger's influence due to losing her flesh(like Ranni), and at this point she is a spirit without purpose, has her abilities sealed and is unaccepted by the Erdtree; which is where Marika comes in with a new purpose for her and uses some means to convince Melina of it.
Melina, ignorant to the truth, acts according to Marika's designs both assisting the Tarnished to grow in strength and offering Marika's words as guidance until she reaches the Erdtree. Upon reaching Leyndell and becoming able to "govern" her own movement, Melina leaves to determine her purpose, at which point she comes to the realization of exactly what her purpose is; to destroy the Erdtree entirely. Which she later tells you a bit about:
"Hello again, old friend. Allow me a moment to converse with you. You were unable to enter the Erdtree, no? Prevented by the mantle of barbs. The thorns are impenetrable. A husk of the Erdtree's being; that spurns all that exists without. The only way to stand before the Elden Ring...and become the Elden Lord...is to pass the thorns. *My purpose serves to aid in that very act.* So I'd like you to undertake a new journey, with me. To the flame of ruin, far above the clouds, upon the snow mountaintops of the giants. Then I can set the Erdtree aflame. And guide you. Down the path to becoming Elden Lord."
But upon reaching the Snow Valley Ruins in the Moutaintops, she says:
"There is something I'd like to say. *My purpose was given to me by my mother. But now, I act of my own volition.*
I have set my heart upon the world that I would have. Regardless of my mother's designs.
I won't allow anyone to speak ill of that. Not even you."
So Melina says that her purpose, given to her by her mother, is to aid us in passing the Thorns and becoming Elden Lord; however the way in which she is going about this is no longer by Marika's design. Marika never intended for Melina to burn herself.
So there's three sets of motives here, Melina(GEQ) acting under the influence of the Two Fingers/Greater Will to defeat/replace Marika and kill eternal beings, Melina acting under the influence of Marika to help burn the Thorns and assist in destroying the Erdtree, and Melina acting on her own to sacrifice herself so that we may create a better future as Elden Lord. Much like how Ranni was not acting entirely freely during the Night of Black Knives, Melina wasn't acting entirely freely as the GEQ. The only actions of the GEQ which have sole motive from Melina is her defiance of Marika, which I think would make sense if she were the GEQ prior.
As Melina, after realizing her purpose and being able to freely move again, she still wishes for "Death... indiscriminate..." but ALSO disagrees with utilizing the Frenzied Flame. As the GEQ she brought indiscriminate death to the gods, hence the Godslayer's Greatsword/Seal and the Godskin Apostles. So indiscriminate death doesn't mean that life shouldn't exist, it means that nobody is beyond death, that nobody should be eternal/immortal; including Marika. But Marika misunderstood the intentions of the GEQ and her "indiscriminate death", which led Marika to assume that the GEQ would be willing to destroy all Life if nudged in that direction, as Marika vehemently opposes the Greater Will.
This is why Melina does not agree with the Frenzied Flame ending and she reverts to the GEQ to kill us if we do it, as she believes both Life AND Death have value. She values the cycle of Life as Melina but simultaneously believes nothing should be eternal as the GEQ, with no Elden Ring/Order there's both an eternal being (Lord of Chaos) as well as no more Life.
I believe this establishes sufficient motive for all the the actions of the GEQ and Melina at varying points in time, but if you have a specific action(s)/set of events you feel isn't explained by these motives I'd gladly hear it and offer my thoughts.

I feel like this video misses a pretty crucial piece of evidence regarding Marika's involvement: the Remembrance of the Black Blade.
"Maliketh was a shadowbound beast given to his Empyrean. Marika’s sole need of her shadow was a vessel to lock away Destined Death. Even then, she betrayed him."
This pretty directly implies Marika assisted in stealing the rune of death, because if that was Maliketh's only job then there was really only one way he could be betrayed. The video ascribes the betrayal to the shattering itself, but the remembrance makes it seem much more directly linked to the sealing of destined death. Marika's connections to the Black Knife assassins is just supporting evidence.
Personally, I think Marika had already decided she wanted to disrupt order in the lands between, and used the guise of a grieving mother to escape attention for it. I think her questioning the depths of the Golden Order/renouncing blind faith happened earlier, pre-Night of Black Knives

fuck me, is this channel really going to become on of those "4 videos per week" soulless things? I subscribed long ago for the deep dive into the Dark Souls lore, and I really suspect that the direction this is going is going to be... well, just shit

No, this project has been many months in the making, and is just being released in quick succession due to a number of delays - they're not being made daily I assure you! The same effort as ever is being put into each episode, and I'll continue in this way heading into the DLC

So after sleuthing around turns out you and the tarnished archaeologist are hated on Reddit and the official discord. The quality of discussion and sheer head cannon in those places is so bad they will try to discredit a creator with nonsequiturs or make stuff up about them.
I have to wonder is it all the new Blood as souls games have been our little friendly community trying to build stuff up rather than this new wave of fedoramancers. Sure we have had ganking and toxicity for sure but Lore toxicity is new to me, i think the only lore toxicity i saw was me raging about velka and asking Ashen Hollow is she in the room with him right now.
