My biggest problem with these movies is that even though I understand it's meant to be an allegory for unresolved trauma and how you have to put on a smile while feeling like you're dying inside, the "All in your head" trope makes it as if the entity doesn't exist at all, and this is just a movie about someone's mental break. Which isn't scary anymore. There's no monster. Just hallucinations and insanity. I feel like your version corrects that and makes the entity fully realized as more than just a figment of the imagination.

I agree with your criticisms. Having nothing be real is supposed to be disorienting but it just makes there be no stakes and annoying to try and keep track of what's actually happening. Also, they've pulled the "ha ha! You can't beat the smile monster!" at he end on us twice now so I'll probably boycott the third if the character is just going be doomed from the start.

Many of your criticism don’t make sense. you need to consider 1) she is a pop star, with not as much brains as the lady in the first movie who is a doctor. Therefore she is less intelligent and less capable of figuring out how to do things much less detective work. That is what the director was trying to show us. That different characters with different intelligence, background, personality respond to threats differently.
Also, you need to consider that sky has much more trauma and history of mental instability from drug use. That’s why she was so helpless when it came to fighting this demon as opposed to the doctor lady. Again, DIFFERENT backgrounds, DIFFERENT outcomes.
Sometimes you need to watch movies not for progression of plot or characters like you say. Sometimes you just need to watch it for the fun of it.

I'm a drug addict so the movie was very relatable for me. Plus I also really thought they did a great job at showing the traumas of a Pop Star (We think their life is easy but after all this P*do stuff that is coming out in Hollywood or in the Music industry shows the deep Abyss that this really is). Oh and the scene at the beginning was just a great connection to the first movie. The person got no chance from the beginning... not in the first nor the second movie. That's one of the specialitys of this thing... to lure you into false security just to crumble it in front of your eyes.

Love this idea so much, and I had an idea for a change that I think would be a great last scare before Skye offs herself. Instead of just one girl in the crowd smiling, after Skye gives her emotional speech and the crowd is cheering for her, she notices the people slowly put their hands down, and after getting a closer look, realizes every single person in the crowd is smiling at her. After this, Skye gets disoriented and than this is when the demon takes over, with the rest being the same as you proposed. The shot of an entire crowd grinning at Skye could be very disturbing to see and I think it would be a lot creepier than just one person.

I actually think that they did this because it's showing the viewers the many possible ways to defeat the Smile monster. I think in a future movie, the main character might use all of those ways to their advantage. For example, in the next movie, they could show way that someone could differentiate what's real and what isn't and maybe even being able to suppress the visions and make the time they're able to be alive(7 days) longer and giving them a chance to fight back.

When I saw it for the first time, I thought it was a very good movie, but clearly it has errors and the plot itself is not very original, they focused a lot on details that make it better, nothing else. Let's face it... Smile 2 ends exactly as the first film. Except that this one was with different circumstances and with a bigger scale at the end.

The ending didn't explain how she got to the concert. I got confused. She went from wearing the hoodie jacket to the butterfly outfit at the concert after the dancer attacked her and she got possessed in her apartment/condo? The final scene doesn't make sense to me. Laura, Rose and Lewis wore the same dress before the demon made them killed themselves. At the concert scene she was wearing the dress she refused to wear, why would they make her wear that? At the end credits, you can hear her screaming and banging at the freezer door. Looks like the ending is a hallucination.

I think Skye was trying to be too rational about what the hell was going on. Clearly she was seeing things and losing touch with reality she should’ve taken it more seriously sooner. Yeah by day 3 she was a lost cause but still there was a small window of opportunity that she could’ve taken with Morris before the creature used that against her.

There is a lot to love, and we are all different, but good points!

  • @breckinmeyerstan1145
    @breckinmeyerstan1145 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

My problem with both movies is that they introduce a concept of defeating the thing but don't actually use them. We had to wait until the second one to see the whole 'kill to survive' shtick. It's kind of irritating because it's dangling a cool idea in front of the audience with no intention of actually going through with it.
I also don't think the villain of a movie needs to necessarily be beatable. If it is something like a virus, like in Cabin Fever, it makes sense that it's basically unbeatable. The Deadites in the Evil Dead franchise are also almost unbeatable once they've possessed someone. Amelia never gets rid of the Babadook. I think in Smile, it's the fact that the movie goes 't'was a dream!' that takes the tension out. At what point of the movie do I stop caring because what the main character does doesn't matter anymore?
If I could've changed the ending, I probably would've made Morris become infected. Skye has the fight with the demon, where she ultimately decides to potentially sacrifice herself. Morris storms back in, nearly fails in resuscitating her, but ultimately brings her back. We follow Skye back to the concert hall where she has her concert. The camera zooms out, showing Morris watching her on TV. He is content until someone knocks at his door. As he gets up, the knocking turns to full-on banging, someone screaming to let them out. Morris, being smart, doesn't open the door but instead grabs a weapon and goes to call the police but has no reception, which is sPoOkY. The banging has stopped and Morris investigates the door. Calling out to the person, looking through the peephole, nothing is there, just an empty hallway. He opens the door to find himself in the back of the freezer. Skye's decomposed body is lying on the floor and he sees himself leaning against the door of the freezer crying. He realises what is happening, turns around only to be faced with the freezer door, and starts banging on it, begging someone to let him out.
This would, to a certain extent, close out Skye's arc of her guilt and overcoming her 'selfishness'. It would make Morris more than a one-off exposition character. It would explore a concept introduced in the movie but still leave the door open to revisit it because technically Morris failed. It would raise the interesting question of what the being would do if there was no one else around. Would Morris survive until someone rescues him? Would the being turn his mind to absolute mush or back off until it has a real chance of spreading?
There are a ton of ways to rewrite this movie. I thought your idea was fun, I'm just not a fan of the 'it spreads to everyone' ending. I think it's predictable, it's nothing new or exciting, and it's just not consistent in any way. Why did the demon wait until it was possessing a pop star? Is it too stupid to walk in front of a train or jump off a building? The last person it possessed was a cop, which are famously used for safety in big concert halls. Could it not do something then? Could it not just go in the middle of the street and kill its host?
Btw, Naomi Scott did a terrific job acting, I was absolutely captivated by her performance. Favourite jumpscare of the movie would probably be the one with Jemma in the bed where her skull glows and she sounds like a car horn. You anticipate a jumpscare, but it's just so out there and over the top, it legitimately made my body take a screenshot.

Although I've eventually grown to like the actual third act and ending, I do appreciate your version of it and having Skye Riley more agency.
One thing I'd also keep that certain pivotal moment is Skye facing her past self in the freezer (or even in the same car situation) because confronting her inner demon (her poor choices like substance abuse which lead to causing Paul’s death) than someone representing her externalizing blame and guilt (Paul Hudson) felt more fitting.
Relations with your rewritten version to hype up the ending even better, it could've been her character development and journey towards self-acceptance and personal growth/accountability within.

I think this movie would have been a better for ending the trilogy. Having the last death being infront of a crowd would have been a better ending to leave the audience with the possibilities. I think the sequel should have built off cop character at the beginning but having 2 people see the a horrible death and have the demon torment 2 people. This ending should have been the third installment in my opinion. Because I don’t see them making a movie following this. Just a prequel or something.
