I think it is poetic that Walt tried to manipulate his son, yet Walt Jr. (unknowingly) perfectly flipped the script around and revealing to his father than everything he had been working towards for a year was working against him.
For me this is more Walt projecting, remembering your father only from hospital bed would definitely leave a mark on a child. Also seing your loved one having a breakdown is not a fun time, no wonder Walt thinks his son would not like to see that

5:18 it makes sense that Jesse didnt mess up, he was petrified to be there, to yell at gus, and to see the reprecussions of it all, he may not be known for his self control but he definetly wouldn't mess with the cartel in front of Gus. The earlier scene was him genuinely cooking correctly
One Detail that always bothered me about the scene where Jesse cooks in Mexico: When asked how long it takes to get the phenylacetic acid the Mexican-Chemist says "I don't know, several hours at least!" in a super upset voice. Yet... they were planning for Jesse to make his own anyways, so wouldn't they have to wait several hours anyways? And sure, he may have mean't it takes several hours to attain some from somewhere else, but he ALSO said it's super easy to make so if it DIDN'T take long then why wouldn't he just make it for Jesse? So the "several hours at least" line is pretty stupid, since i doubt the character meant it as a hyperbole (since aparrently it DID take several hours during which Jesse had them clean up the lab)
Totally agree! I assumed he meant that it would take that long to make it (I just looked it up and it seems like it might take over 3 hours). And it makes sense that Jesse would be upset having to wait that long!! The guy was just being combative, I guess, since I’m sure he resented having someone come “show him how it’s done,” especially once he took a look at Jesse!
The guy was setting Jesse up to fail. He would have known Jesse needs that acid ready before getting started because of the chosen method of meth cooking.
At 12:28 I'm pretty sure that's Gus because it looks like his silver suit and black pants. Idk why he looks so close maybe because the pool reflection is weird from underneath or maybe because Don moved towards him before falling into the pool.
12:44 I really appreciate the fact that Giancarlo Esposito had to learn to speak spanish for the show, but its kinda funny how he said "vengAn" instead of "vEngan" (emphasizing the E)
Of all his spanish lines in the series him telling Eladios man to leave in peace or die is the most obvious that he doesn't speak the language. I'm guessing it because he is speaking with such emotion and that affects his pronunciation.
That speech is my favorite part of all season 4. It sends chills down my spine. I don't speak Spanish tho, so all the bad inflection is missed by me totally.

@@betterwatchtv judging by Eladio’s reaction, this bottle was supposed to be a collector’s piece. Let’s say, $10000-20000 for a bottle. This is the figure and the rarity that would make a cartel boss so enthusiastic. The writers and directors of BCS had been trying to put as much references, lore expansions and familiar characters/plot devices into the show as possible. For a person, who watches BCS before BB, some scenes can look weird because of it. For example, imagine watching the first episode of BCS and seeing hands snatching Jimmy into the house. And only then the shot when Tuco, who peeks outside, watching for other people, follows. This is where cheering and excitement from people who’d watched BB was supposed to be. It’s a reveal. But for people who had no prior knowledge of Tuco, this scene makes no sense. We as the audience follow Jimmy and his perception, so Tuco’s face and stature being hidden away from us in the first shot makes absolutely no sense cinematographically. BCS is an outstanding show, but it is guilty of fan pondering, and it sometimes compromises common sense to insert as many references and crossovers as possible. To get a sort of MCU fan reaction, where they see a familiar face or a prop: OUUUUUUGH. So, they felt they needed to put Zafiro into an episode, but it costing so much didn’t make sense in that establishment, so they made it reasonably pricey. They compromised. They couldn’t write Jimmy and Kim into a better establishment, and $10000 fraud would make Ken find them and press charges, or at least try to get his money back. The plot demanded that Ken should be able to pay for it and don’t cause a scene. And the fan pondering demanded that it must have been Zafiro, not another, genetic tequila. Of course, they can claim it had gone out of production since then and that’s why Eladio was so surprised. But I’ve seen them compromising a lot to insert as many fan service as possible. They put Zafiro Añejo in BCS so we’d do the :o soyjak faces and point fingers at the screen. Nothing more, nothing less. Without this aspect, BCS would have been perfect.

Ive never noticed a single film artefact in the show until I started watching your channel. If someone told me it was just an inside gag and you were putting them in there on purpose I would have believed it lol Gotta love the contrast of Walt Jrs bright orange racing jacket and the midnight blue mom-mobile PT
10:45 I’m not sure if somebody pointed this out yet, but I’m pretty sure the subtitles should say “Muchas gracias a usted!” Not “I will stay!” For context, “a usted” is basically saying “to you” but in a formal way, so he’s asking Jesse to thank him formally.
I've been waiting for this so long! How do you even come up with half of these facts??? I have never ever seen someone point out the 16:16 bit or even something similar. You are out of this world, man. I hope you're enjoying your vacation.
Thanks, Uleš!! I saw someone point out the 16 minute thing, so when I checked it out for myself, that’s when I noticed that it was also 16 seconds! The vacation officially starts Tuesday… I just had to work myself up to getting roughly 2 weeks ahead. I’m trying to finish a rough cut of End Times tomorrow, and I’d really like to get a head start on Face Off before I go. But it’s inevitable that I’ll keep revising and revising and revising each video throughout vacation!
The Rage thing is so cool and most people probably miss it (like me)! Watching Breaking Bad with friends who never seen it is so much more fun when you can point out such details. Thank you for making these! 🙏
Finally Subscribing because of the generous decision of including the film artifact explanation. I’ve searched comments for weeks, THANKS BETTER WATCH TV!
I really like how Jesse takes charge of himself and directs the meth lab at the cartel. Its nice how he finally stands up for himself... if only he wasnt making meth though
7:17 is it in the lore that Ted has necromancy powers? ‘cause otherwise I doubt he’ll be able to get ONE of these fine lawyers to help with his tax problem
It could also be possible that in between Better Call Saul and Salud, the company that made the tequila went out of business. Though if that was the case, Eladio would probably have mentioned something to that effect.
This has been repeated to death, but I always love the detail in crawl space where the ending mirrors how Walt really dies, with the camera being shaky and a soundtrack that distorts itself to a shrieking like sound, and in Walt's death, he dies in a much more stable and still position on the ground, in a place where he truly wanted to be, and it was only until he truly died where the camera fixes itself, almost as if his life could only truly be stabilized once he dies, and he needs to fix things first before he gets there, and a much clearer soundtrack with Bad finger's baby blue, instead of the impending doom sounding soundtrack that plays in Crawl Space. I hate that people still think that its the death or the moment walt becomes heisenberg, even though it isn't and he was always just a monster ready to awaken, BUT THATS BESIDES THE POINT.
@@betterwatchtv This is like far down the line but someone pointed out what I've been questionning the whole time that everyone wearing some shade of green in the s4 finale, Face Off, are all people who will be targetted or harmed by Walt in the episode, like Rebecca Simons, Hector, and Saul and more, which is the reason why Walt wears Green by the end, heck even the poison given to Brock was a plant, which is usually symbolized by the color green, although the lily's main thing is the white part but still. Usually Green is the symbol of money greed and wealth, but it doesn't make sense with everyone else, but it makes sense if it ties everyone to walt's final plan to kill Gus. As it is largely motivated by, him and his family's safety, and wanting to overtake Gus' business. Which still technically aligns with the meaning of green in the show.
the jr & walt scene in this episode is an all-time favorite of mine. i absolutely love the detail of how jr's first reaction to his own dad missing his birthday party isn't to be angry, but to call him and ask if he's okay. plus it's one of the extremely rare times we get to see walt's true, unfiltered emotions without him twisting them into a manipulation tactic (barring the gambling cover obviously), and of course the bittersweet resolution of jr preferring walt's vulnerablility to the pseudo-masculine facade he's been putting on up until this point. also fun fact: schraderbrau was also turned into an orange soda in real life! i collect soda bottles and had to grab one for myself, but it was just some pretty standard-tasting orange soda that didn't stand out too much lol. there's also churro and horchata-flavored los pollos hermanos sodas, and a blue heisenberg soda that was really gross and minty for some reason? tasted like drinking toothpaste. you'd think blue raspberry would be the obvious choice but i guess not! (also thanks for the pronunciation correction back in hermanos!)
Yeah, it is a great scene! Thanks!! I did just see something about those sodas, on Dean's Twitter, I think! That's a cool thing to collect! How many do you have?
You missed a little detail, in the famous talking pillow family intervention scene walt tells his family that he doesn't want to take 40 pills a day because after he is gone That's how his family will remember him. In Salud, he talks about his dad which I think is very interesting detail that he feels sorry for his dad and does not feel happy remembering him, he uses the same analogy in his life that he does not want to be remembered like he remembers his own dad. Great video again , one of your bests.
Thanks, Shahbaz!! It's funny because I *almost* cut to him saying that. I think I left it out because even though it's just like what he was saying about his dad, the current incident that Walt didn't want Junior to remember him as (drugged/drunk and injured from a fight) was kind of different. But yeah, I probably should have mentioned it.
the "source of contamination" is absolutely Fly-inspired. Jesse would have never cared to be so meticulous and so brazen in front of the cartel otherwise.
Love how similar Eladios expression looking @ Gus after he poisoned everyone is to Hanks expression on the 🚽 after finding Whitmans book. “It was you!”
@@betterwatchtvActually, I would be curious to hear your take on the “exact moment Walt became Heisenberg” question. Like if you think he was always Heisenberg or if you believe there was one particular turning point…I think it would be a cool video topic unless you don’t have much to say on it!
That could be an interesting video! There are so many I want to do but never know when I'm going to do them! I'll add it to the list. I do think that he "became" him at some point and the first time felt like in the Breakage episode. But I think he would also shift in and out of that mode. I could see having a measurement of how Heisenbergy he is in each episode! Thanks!
One detail I noticed in this episode is that when Gus walks out, he's in a very similar position to Walt shortly before his death. As he walks out, injured by his own design (Walt's machine gun put down the Nazi gang and wounded him in the process; Gus' poison put down the cartel down and poisoned him in the process. Both mortal wounds had Gus not had medical care ready), his right-hand-man is garrotting a morally reprehensible sidekick (Mike garrottes Gaff; Jesse garrottes Todd). Shortly thereafter, he faces down his ultimate enemy (Gus - Don Eladio, killed Max; Walt - Jack Welker, killed Hank), who dies mid sentence. There are so many elements of the two scenes that are very similar, even down to Gus and Walt both placing themselves in the way of direct, mortal danger and both employing plans designed to kill all of their enemies at once. There might be more parallels, or maybe I'm looking into it far too deep.
Strange enough, film artifacts seem to be a symbol of bad omen, they always appear right before something tragic happens, they were there when Victor got killed, when Jesse fought with walter ,when Max got shot ,when Eladio got poisoned, When Gus got blown up, etc. They seem to have this funereal, almost divine feeling to them.
English-Spanish translator from LATAM here! You're right about the "paliza" translation. "Beating" is much closer than spank. However, I like the "spank" translation because it carries a connotation of punishment, particularly that delivered from a figure of authority to a child; I think Eladio's real intention here is to remind Gus Fring that he is the boss, and Gus needs to be "disciplined". To be fair, that connotation is not in Eladio's line as Steven Bauer delivered it, but I do think it was the intention implied in the script. I have noticed both in this show and in BCS that the scenes in Spanish aren't very idiomatic - sometimes, they don't sound very natural for native Spanish speakers - I assume that's because the script is first written in English and then the necessary portions are translated into Spanish.
I'm very surprised with the prevalence of Spanish speakers where they are that they couldn't get a native speaker to do that translation to sound more natural.
12:28 I'm not crazy for assuming thats Gus right? It is weird that they had him stand in the wrong spot when they had Mike stand in the correct spot (pretty sure he's the black blob besides Eladio's foot)
Doesn’t look like Gus to me! 🤷♂️ Looks like someone in a white shirt and black pants, which I guess matches the staff member who was attending to the first guy who flopped over while Mike was strangling Gaff…
@@betterwatchtv that makes more sense, it looked more like Gus’s silver jacket than a white shirt to me. We may never know for its still such a cool detail
Something that I see a lot of people mistake is Joaquin being the same negotiator/sniper Mike chokes out appearing throughout the season. Joaquin is a separate character who only shows up at the Mexican lab in the background and dies in the fast paced shootout with Jesse. Took me 3 rewatches to realize he’s a separate character.
Oh. I always figured it was they same guy. Mike strangled him, apparently sufficienty, but had to move on to another goon. So it surprised Mike as Mike thought he had put him down
@@betterwatchtv Imo, that entire taking down the cartel sequence compares favorably to the scene in the Godfather, where Micheal shoots that rival î the restaurant, only Gus' plan required him to be even more smart, resourceful, and tough than Micheal was.
I was watching the commentary for this episode and it seems that the reason that Walt Jr. was given a PT Cruiser was because the writer wanted Skyler to get him a typical "mom" car and that was the exact model car that her mother drove.
This is the first video I've watched on your channel, but with this production quality, viewership, and amazing care to details, you definitely deserve a lot more subscribers. Here's to another one. Salud!
Haha! Well, that was the old Walt, but I supposed Skyler is still the same. Although she got a glimpse of what kind of car Junior really likes. Not that she would buy him a Challenger, but maybe something red??
@@betterwatchtv in my mind, she was only thinking about doing whatever she could to reverse the damage that the challenger had done to their unremarkable appearance; there's probably a hint of "THIS is the kind of car we should have bought him, walt" in there.
I’d argue BCS kind of ruins the whole “impossible” thing because they buy/drink/try to buy it like 4 or 5 times throughout that series and they’re just normal people, it’s on the menu at a hotel bar and it’s (admittedly the “last one”) in presumably the first liquor store he went to, it doesn’t seem hard to attain at all. especially not for someone of Eladio or Gus’s status/wealth. it would have made much more sense to be like a $20,000 bottle that you had to “hunt down” to get, but canonically it’s just a thing the everyday guy could buy with little trouble
Yeah, that's kind of where my head was at as well. Maybe it's really hard to get in Mexico?? So it's like when someone brings a common treat from their country? (Still not worthy of "impossible," though!)
@@betterwatchtv yeah I considered the “harder in Mexico” thing but then I thought “but these guys smuggle thousand of pounds of drugs over the border every year” so it wouldn’t be difficult at all for Eladio to have someone smuggle it in for him if it was illegal or hard to get in Mexico
11:15 - Paliza - In informal spanish (pretty much in all latam) paliza is used as "hit/punch/discipline someone" - A parent may say to its child: "I gonna give you a paliza if you do/dont ...." like a threat to his toddler to remember who is in charge, not to physically hurt (maybe sometimes). In this context, Don Eladio is saying to Gus (literal translation) "I just had to give you that paliza", in the context of teaching you that you have to do what I say (as a discipline / corrective manner), not the actual "spank" or "hit" someone.
im glad you pointed that the person jesse shots is joaquin. at first i thought joaquin was the guy that mike strangles but he wasnt. i somehow thought that mike didnt kill him and just let him be uncouncius and he came back to stop them from escaping
Yeah! The main thing for me is that I *think* it spoils the illusion that Eladio’s hacienda is in Mexico. Mexico *could* have those windmills but I don’t know…
Skyler explains to Ted several times about how her name is all over the books and how she could be held liable, so I don't think even as naive as Ted is, he thinks it's none of her business.
Another great video! I wanna get a little ahead of the curve here- in S5E5 Dead Freight during the opening credits, Walt is talking to Hank in his office and making up the name of a therapist that Skyler is seeing. He says “Peter…something or other” and as he’s saying that, Peter Gould’s name comes up! I’m sure you would’ve noticed/mentioned this anyway but I was inspired by you on this one!
Honestly if it takes "several hours at least" to synthesize the pheno acid, there's no reason why they *wouldn't* have it ready before they got there. It was just disrespectful to make him do it himself, even if he knew what he was doing
Holy shit as an amateur editor, I absolutely ADORE the water effect at 14:09 !! It looks amazing and so life-like, as if you dropped a medallion in water with the channel member printed on it! If you could, can you describe your method of achieving the effect or a ressource you could link to to replicate it? Edit: after looking at it for a little bit on a bigger screen, I can tell now it's a 3D plane manually keyframed to simulate water physics along with a distortion effect on a mirrored image, but the effect of the camera transition from above water and under water is extremely impressive, well done!

I think the "i had to *spank* you" was spank as in discipline (like you'd discipline a misbehaving child), implying that Gus is a child that needs to be shown his place in the Cartel. A subtle dig from Eladio.
What if both Howard and Lalo were alive and appeared at the point in time of this episode? One would help Ted. And the other would be in Guatavo's way. 🥶

It’s easier. BCS price is a retcon. It was implied to be far more expensive in BB.
I don’t know… I feel like the writers still could have made it $1,000 or something…
@@betterwatchtv they didn’t care enough
I refuse to believe that considering how much they twisted themselves into knots about other continuity details...

When you’re having a bad Sunday morning but Better Watch TV posts a video:
10:45 I’m not sure if somebody pointed this out yet, but I’m pretty sure the subtitles should say “Muchas gracias a usted!” Not “I will stay!”
For context, “a usted” is basically saying “to you” but in a formal way, so he’s asking Jesse to thank him formally.
Oh, interesting! Thanks!! It’s amazing how many issues there are with the Spanish in this episode!
I really like how Jesse takes charge of himself and directs the meth lab at the cartel. Its nice how he finally stands up for himself... if only he wasnt making meth though
Very true from beginning to end. If not for the meth aspect, it would be a great advancement.
7:17 is it in the lore that Ted has necromancy powers? ‘cause otherwise I doubt he’ll be able to get ONE of these fine lawyers to help with his tax problem
👀
It could also be possible that in between Better Call Saul and Salud, the company that made the tequila went out of business. Though if that was the case, Eladio would probably have mentioned something to that effect.
Ahhhhh! I love that possibility! Thanks!
the editing in this episode is absolutely amazing, you really outdid yourself!
Thank you, Orionkettle! It’s a special episode!
That's interesting to think about the differences with the soundtrack!
Discovering this channel was the best thing I’ve found recently. It’s gotten me back to binge the show and BCS.
Awesome!! I’m glad you discovered it!
the jr & walt scene in this episode is an all-time favorite of mine. i absolutely love the detail of how jr's first reaction to his own dad missing his birthday party isn't to be angry, but to call him and ask if he's okay. plus it's one of the extremely rare times we get to see walt's true, unfiltered emotions without him twisting them into a manipulation tactic (barring the gambling cover obviously), and of course the bittersweet resolution of jr preferring walt's vulnerablility to the pseudo-masculine facade he's been putting on up until this point.
also fun fact: schraderbrau was also turned into an orange soda in real life! i collect soda bottles and had to grab one for myself, but it was just some pretty standard-tasting orange soda that didn't stand out too much lol. there's also churro and horchata-flavored los pollos hermanos sodas, and a blue heisenberg soda that was really gross and minty for some reason? tasted like drinking toothpaste. you'd think blue raspberry would be the obvious choice but i guess not!
(also thanks for the pronunciation correction back in hermanos!)
Yeah, it is a great scene! Thanks!! I did just see something about those sodas, on Dean's Twitter, I think! That's a cool thing to collect! How many do you have?
@@betterwatchtv thank you! i don't think ive ever properly counted, but definitely at least 100!
Wow, amazing!
I've been so hyped for this episode to be covered!!!
Me too!
That deleted scene at the end is one of the most interesting ones from the show that was cut…
I agree! The others seem just like filler, but this conveys some new info!
the "source of contamination" is absolutely Fly-inspired. Jesse would have never cared to be so meticulous and so brazen in front of the cartel otherwise.
It could be, but I just am not convinced. Yes, he’s surely emulating Walt, but Walt was always a stickler about keeping things clean.
I'm so happy I finally got to see a better watch Tv right after it was uploaded. I still say Ted is a Dbag despite Skylar butting in his business.
Absolutely agree about Ted. And this becomes clear soon! But if it really was an inheritance, I think you could have defended his actions.
Love how similar Eladios expression looking @ Gus after he poisoned everyone is to Hanks expression on the 🚽 after finding Whitmans book. “It was you!”

Thanks!
@@betterwatchtv Heisenbergy lol. That would be fun!
Stay tuned for sometime in 2025!
Very interesting! I like those parallels! I may have to revisit this when it's Felina time! Thanks!
Jesse should have addressed potential spillage lol
That was the one moment I kept cracking myself up!
That intro was smooth as hell!

@@betterwatchtv No problem, also, the outro was amazing too. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to do edits like that lmao the water effect was so cool

👀 Hmm!
Great perspective! Thanks!!
I'm very surprised with the prevalence of Spanish speakers where they are that they couldn't get a native speaker to do that translation to sound more natural.
11:45 thee oh sees is my favourite band! If you like the sound of this, check out their album Floating Coffin for sure
Awesome! Thanks, I'll check it out!
We love thee oh sees!!!
Yeah, absolutely. It’s funny that they never mention the other guy’s name (Gaff).
Oh. I always figured it was they same guy.
Mike strangled him, apparently sufficienty, but had to move on to another goon. So it surprised Mike as Mike thought he had put him down
@@bbbabrock I can see that!
Indeed!

Woo-hoo!! I’m so glad you found the channel! Saluuuuud!
To be fair, this family also owned a Pontiac Aztec… so the PT Cruiser is exactly the kind of thing they’d give their kid as a first car.
5:21 they put emphasis on the car last episode, and im pretty sure this is why
Yep, you’re absolutely right!
Activated charcoal doesnt work on alcohol or poison diffused in alcohol
Oh wow!
“Holding a grudge is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die”
Gus set out to prove that saying wrong in this episode
It's an honor to be here this early for my favorite episode of the series! Salud!
Salud, Daniel!!
Haha, true!
Nice, thanks for that!
finally the episode that includes the bottle that you talked about so much.
Haha, yeah, and I talk about it again here!
im glad you pointed that the person jesse shots is joaquin. at first i thought joaquin was the guy that mike strangles but he wasnt. i somehow thought that mike didnt kill him and just let him be uncouncius and he came back to stop them from escaping
Ah yeah, no problem! Yeah, the guy Mike strangles is Gaff (an unusual name and never mentioned out loud).

Apparently it stands for “Personal Transport”
8:50 plus the windmill is newer and has fresh paint along the base while the other one is rusted
Oh, that is a GREAT point! Thanks!
Really.
