I'm 75 and there just isn't any substitute for good home cooking, COMFORT food. I cook that way. My grandmother, who raised me, cooked that way. In my life I've traveled all over the world. I've eaten in the best restaurants around the world. STILL, there is NO substitute for home cooking. If you don't cook this way, you are cheating yourself and your family out of a healthy meal. Y'all keep up the cookin' !! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👍
Some of my favorite ways to use and eat ground beef are; meatloaf, chili, sloppy joe, tacos, and Pattie’s out and grilled for hamburgers with all the fixing’s!
Besides spaghetti sauce, meatballs, meatloaf, goulash, chili mac, sloppy joes, and lots I can't think of right now, we enjoy stroganoff made with ground beef. Quick recipe: brown ground beef with onion and garlic. After meat is browned, drain and add a can of cream of mushroom soup and 3/4 can of milk, mix and cook over medium heat until well blended and everything is cooked through. Take off heat and add 8 ounces of sour cream. Blend in the sour cream well. Add finely chopped parsley for color and a little freshness. Serve over egg noodles or rice. Another one is hamburger pie. Make up your favorite meatloaf recipe. Instead of making it into a loaf, form it like a pie crust in a deep-dish glass pie pan. (It will be much thicker than a regular pie crust.) Bake in a 350 degree oven. While your meatloaf "crust" is baking, make a pot of mashed potatoes (not too wet so they will stand up in peaks). When your meatloaf crust is done, drain off any fat, and fill your meatloaf "crust" with the mashed potatoes and make peaks like you would in meringue. Sprinkle cheddar cheese on top and return to oven until the cheese is melted. Let your pie rest a few minutes and then cut into wedges and serve just like a pie. It's delicious. My kids always loved it. Good dish for weeknight dinner or for company. Enjoy! God bless.
I process a lot of deer and do a 60/20/20 blend of deer, pork with beef. I look for the cheap cuts (select) brisket and grind it fat and all. This makes great ground meat for all recipes.
Thank you for commenting about how that particular salt requires more of it to be adequately salted. I was beginning to think it was just me. I had never heard of sawmill gravy before. While we have a lot of similar recipes just being country folk, you could be right that that is specifically an Appalachian thing but I look forward to trying it.
If I had a Woman like you, Id weigh 400 lbs . Most the young women around here cant boil an egg without Mamas help . They all just want to go out and eat .
Linda Shepard, Dothan, Alabama, love your family channel, nothing more important than God first!! And family !God bless!!I am 76 yrs. Old and heard and seen and done it all,but still serving God 1stand still running the race, god bless you and your family
Korean beef brown hamburger and any vegetable if you want like peppers onions zucchini add honey or brown sugar with soy sauce. Spice with ginger and garlic fresh or dry. Serve over rice. Just found your channel from TN.
Fantastic Meagan. Mom made a lot of gravy in the 60's and up to the mid 70's when we were home yet, but I can't recall the sawmill gravy. I have to try it. POA
Great looking meal Megan. Would like to see that biscuit recipe in a slowed down version though. Really enjoyed your version of Saw Mill gravy, going to give it a try because It will be so much better than lots of other folks version, and the hamburger steak was great too. Stay safe and keep up the great recipes and videos. Fred.
I like using ground beef in chili (soup), chili (hot dog), spaghetti/lasagna, etc., meat loaf, vegetable soup meatballs, deep dish pizza, hamburgers, cabbage rolls, cottage pie, sauerkraut casserole...to name a few favorites. That sawmill gravy looks good. I'm not usually a big gravy fan, but I do love corn meal, so I'll bet I'd love it! Always enjoy your videos!
How to use ground beef ? How about a Cottage Pie I It's the beef cousin of Shepherd's Pie, which is made with ground lamb . Basically , you season the meat with the seasonings you are using here and fry it to crumbles with chopped onion . Sprinkle it with a heaping tablespoon of flour , mix it in well and continue to fry for a minute or two . Add about a cup of beef broth (or water ) and stir until it thickens into a gravy . Spread it into a baking dish , top with vegetables of choice ( canned or frozen and defrosted) . I use mixed vegetables , then spread a generous layer of mashed potatoes on top -you can drizzle melted butter on top , if you want . Put the baking dish on a rimmed cookie sheet and Bake at 350 for about 25-30 minutes , until it's bubbly and the top is a little golden . It's a good meal and would be wonderful with your Quick Yeast Rolls ! Hope you like it !
One thing I like to do when I have extra burger on hand is to make baked stuffed bell peppers with a filling of rice and burger Love all your videos. I'm a new subscriber and have been binge watching. I busted up my knee and have some extra time on my hands while I'm healing up. So I'm glad I found your channel.
Having a excess of hamburger is a problem I wouldn’t mind having. Hamburger is very versatile and you can do so much with it. Tacos and spaghetti and chili. The list goes on but hamburger steak to me is better than a steak. Cubed steak and gravy is my favorite. My son loves pork tenderloin and gravy. You definitely know how to bring ‘em to the table!
One favorite way to use ground beef is in vegetable soup. Another is in a family favorite casserole called Cashew Beef Casserole. It's delicious, made with ground beef, noodles, creamed soups, and cashews. One of my aunts came up with it years ago, and if you'd like to try it, I will share the recipe. My dad used to make stuffed burgers, and they were wonderful. He'd make two thin patties, put a couple of thin onion rings on one, put shredded cheese in the middle of the onion, then put the other patty on top and pinch the edges closed. He seasoned with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, and either fried them in a cast iron skillet, or cooked them on a grill. Both ways were delicious
I’m from Georgia. Sawmill gravy is made with flour and milk. Have never heard of gravy made with cornmeal. My daddy was raised working in saw mills and his dad to. lol Guess different in different parts of the country.
One of my favorites is hamburger stew.. you can always change the veggies to make it often but different... and then on special days put some biscuits on top and bake it for a country pot pie.. really enjoy your channel... thanks for sharing
I've not heard of sawmill gravy but looks good. Something I throw together with hamburger for an easy meal is Hamburger Casserole. I don't measure much and usually eyeball it. Brown ground beef and drain. Add to a casserole dish or you could do it in one pan on the stove. Add a can of pork n beans. Add some seasonings onion powder, salt, pepper, add little ketchup and mustard and top with sharp cheddar cheese. Serve it with Mash Potatoes, Green Beans or Corn or Collards would be good too. Any side you would like. And don't forget the biscuits with butter and honey or cornbread.
Did you get a new stove? It's beautiful! Sawmill gravy and cats heads..... I had to google the later. Always good stuff though. I might make this for supper for my husband tonight. Wish I had frozen fresh peaches for cobbler or wish I was your neighbor LOL I didn't know that's why the egg yolks looked different either. Always teaching me.... Have a nice supper.
Yes ma’am, it was a Christmas present from my husband ☺️ we just had it installed. Cathead biscuits are the only way to go haha I love a good huge fluffy biscuit
Thanks to TH-cam I'm two years late to the suggestion party. The next time you have a surplus on ground beef, brown a pound of beef with a desired amount of diced onion, once theeat is browned add 8-12 beaten eggs to the beef and scramble together, now just add some shredded cheese and tortillas for an excellent breakfast dinner burrito. I daid 8-12 eggs because you want a slightly even egg to meat ratio, just a little more egg than meat.
Growing up mama called this mill gravy for short which we had usually with fresh caught fish it seemed and chocolate gravy with morels that we called dry land fish. Occasionally red eye gravy with country ham. White gravy was our main daily staple though.
Two year late post for best thing to use with ground beef. Stuffed Cabbage. Check my page for grandmothers stuffed cabbage made by folks from the old country. They are speaking Czech on the video but I left a list of ingredients. The nice thing it is all done on top of the stove.
Definitely making this tonight! Sawmill gravy isn't something we're used to in the Midwest, but i have had it when we visited tho Smoky Mountains, and it's just as delicious as you made it sound! I've never made it, tho so wish me well!
I like to take a pound, pound and a half of ground beef/deer/elk and brown it with some onion and shredded cabbage, and season with salt, pepper, greek seasoning, onion powder, and garlic powder. Add 1 cup of rinsed white rice and 2 cups water, a little butter and cook uncovered for 15 mins. And you have a complete meal: protein, veggies, starch. The best part of this besides the simplicity is that you can throw any kind of green you want in it depending on what the garden or store has. Ive used everything from cabbage, to beet greens, bok choy, okra, collard greens... Its very versatile and very easy and very good if you dont overcook the rice. Ill be trying that sawmill gravy recipe next time i fry some rabbit
Thanks for sharing the gravy recipe! I make meatloaf, tacos, stuffed peppers (lop the top off red pepper, stuff with mixture of cooked, white rice, seasoned, browned ground beef, tomato sauce), cover bottom of baking pan with tomato sauce or water, bake at 350 for 1:2 hour -45 minutes , depending on thickness or size of peppers.
Just found your channel. Nice to find a traditional country cook! I had to comment on that biscuit griddle! Oh my word! I've never seen one like that and I'm a collector. Do b you have any history on it? It's amazing!
Regarding the dough pan: do you clean it out by brushing out after loose flour absorbs any moisture left by biscuit dough? I am guessing you don't use hot water and/or dish soap as the wood would take too long to dry out between uses. I make bread (by hand, not by machine) and have always wanted a dough or bread pan like yours.
Yes I brush out the extra and scrape any hard pieces out gently with a butter knife, I do occasionally wipe it out with a lightly damp rag but yes no dish soap or hot water
Use the hamburger meat to make hamburger and potato casserole, alternate meat, potatoes and cheese, using whatever spices you'd want to use. Also between each layer use cream of mushroom. Hope you enjoy, god bless you all
How about some ground beef, red onions, bell peppers and sauce of your liking. Plus some Wonder barbecue bread. Mmmm goood! And a Sun-drop or R C cola.
My mawmaw use to fix mixed veggies and groundbeef and put over top of potatoes or rice but most of the time it was potatoes. Cottage pie.meatballs & noodles or cabbage.cowboy beans with ground beef.I was raised on sawmill gravy mighty fine eaten with some good ole biscuits.
Like your channel. Because you are a family channel,God bless!!grew up on a farm myself,I am from Dothan, Alabama, lots of southern farmers here for sure!!!!God bless you and family
Ground beef recipes off the top of my head. Hamburger helper from scratch, chili, meatballs in sauce or gravy, burritos, tacos, meatloaf and many more 🙂
Brown meat salt pepper garlic powder onion chopped. Boil elbow macaroni drain can cream of mushroom can of cream chicken mix pour in casserole dish top with cheese put in oven to melt cheese and warm up good
I like to brown the ground beef, add chopped sweet potatoes, onions and garlic to the grease. When the sweet potatoes are cooked, addd the ground beef back in with a can of Rotel tomatoes and chilis.
I'm always learning something new! Here in central NC we make saw mill gravy with flour but similar to the way you make it, but we would use fat back grease I enjoy your videos too! Keep up the good work!
Something I absolutely love to do with ground beef is brown it and add a generous portion to my favorite baked beans recipe. I’ve always called it Pine Mountain cowboy beans. Pine Mountain is where I grew up at in Harlan County KY. It’s simple but oh so delicious!!! Especially when camping.
We like meatballs, made a lot like your hamburger steak you are making there. I usually have leftover rice, so I add a bit of that instead of the bread. Make into meatballs about the size of a tennis ball, partially bake, drain and cover with a gravy like sauce (we like cream of mushroom soup), finish baking in the oven. We like it with mashed potatoes. I’ve never heard of sawmill gravy, have to give that a try!
Made these yesterday and my family loved them. Love I can start them an hour before dinner and have delicious rolls. I did add a little salt to the recipe and next time I make them I will knead with mixer. I have arthritis in my thumbs and after 10 mins of knead I was felling it. Love your channel!
We buy a cow at a time and it seems like the ground beef goes fast for me. Look up Paula Dean's goulash recipe. It's easy, one pot and feeds a lot of people.
Tater tot casserole is a staple in my house, always a yummy, easy go to when hamburger is on the menu….also I have been looking for a dough bowl, I love yours any leads to where I might purchase one would be awesome
Ohhhh yes, you can’t beat a good tator tot casserole! There is an older neighbor of mine that used to make bowls and he made this for me a few years ago. The best place I have found good ones are at your antique stores.

@@mrs.h3 I use pork butt that’s need trimmed well. It has lots of intermuscular fat in it. This makes the best burger you’ll ever eat.
I may be crazy. But I believe if i had a fresh, ripe tomato, I'd just put a slice or two right on top of that hamburger and gravy.🙂

Absolutely!

Meatballs in brown gravy with mashed potatoes

It’s actually just a Paula dean ho cake pan I got for Christmas several years ago, I love making biscuits in it!
Broody? Hatching eggs?
😋
I have a question about the gravy. Did you use just cornmeal or cornmeal mix? With flour and stuff in it.
You can make it either way, this particular cornmeal was the self rising mixture with a little flour in it :)
add country sage mix to make sausage
Regarding the dough pan: do you clean it out by brushing out after loose flour absorbs any moisture left by biscuit dough? I am guessing you don't use hot water and/or dish soap as the wood would take too long to dry out between uses. Thank you very much! I like to make gravy just out of whatever grease I have from cooking, so it’s no telling what that might be lol
Just the sight of that peach cobbler has flung a craving all over me!

Love sawmill gravy and cornbread
Well I don’t know if I’ve ever had any sawmill gravy (unless mama snuck it in on us). It looks yummy, I’m gonna have to try it out!
Andy likes it better than regular flour gravy, it’s got a little different taste in a good way ☺️
Corn meal or corn starch? Corn meal is too grainy.
Yes corn meal that’s why it’s called sawmill gravy ☺️
OK, thanks.@@TrueGritAppalachianWays

Tater tot casserole is a staple in my house, always a yummy, easy go to when hamburger is on the menu….also I have been looking for a dough bowl, I love yours any leads to where I might purchase one would be awesome
Ohhhh yes, you can’t beat a good tator tot casserole! There is an older neighbor of mine that used to make bowls and he made this for me a few years ago. The best place I have found good ones are at your antique stores.
