as a bassist in a metal band heavily inspired by thrash rhythm guitar, I find myself doing flutters like this a lot as fills. subtle on bass, but add a nice depth. just jump an octave if ya really want it noticeable lol
Metal can happen regardless of setup - you don't even have to be playing the guitar. It's more defined by the style of playing, largely making use of minor, harmonic minor, phrygian, etc. scales, with a blues influence. Probably more to the point of your question, that evil, face-melting guitar tone is primarily the product of the amplifier, speaker, effects pedals, and to a lesser extent, the pickups in the guitar that translate the vibration of the strings into electrical current.
I wouldn't say that I don't know how to play the guitar, but I would definitely say that I suck at it. Metalocalypse is funny. I've actually been watching Master Shake for all of my guitar lessons but I ended up here...
(Sorry for splitting this, but I got cut off) A basic metal sound can be achieved using any old amplifier and guitar, with a decent distortion pedal in between, e.g. the Boss MT-2 and ML-2. These are just the ones I'm familiar with.
No, it's a pinch harmonic. For a natural harmonic, you pick the open string in one of the harmonic positions, but he's fretting the string at the third fret. It would be the same to just tap the harmonic position on the fretted note, but when playing at that speed, the logical thing to use would be an artificial harmonic.
when he started playing slow i got my guitar and paused to see which frets. i started to play it with him and thought yay i got it. then he said one more time up to speed. oh shit
yeah but notice how his tone is so refined and not that sweet crunchy metal goodness that only the Krankenstein can provide...enough to make captain crunch jealous
lols. I was surprised at the level of trollness going on in the comments on these Shred-ucation videos, but then it occurred to me that this is adult swim's channel, so what can you expect?
I'm a little new to the metal way of playing. So you need to tune your guitar down right? I never done that before, is there anyone who can tell me how to tune my guitar for this?
No feeling? Why does he have his eyes closed? Exactly. For feeling. Why do you close your eyes when you're enjoying something or, for a weird example, when kissing someone you love? =/
Brendon Small, you are my guitar idol, please, please keep making these. I nearly shit my pants when I found out shred-ucation was real.
whenever he stops and stares at his hand I always imagine him to be thinking like ' yo hand you better not f*ck this up'

!!! This is amazing! I feel 100x more metal just watching this.
Brendon Small can do never a bad job and always a good.
whoever disliked this video was just pissed because they couldn't do it
I has a confessions to make, I can't reads the music...
I has music's dyslexias
Thanks for everything Brendon Small! I'm excited to see what's next.
I love you, Brendan Small. Thank you for the videos.
what I most can't the least would be do not a bad job, but always a good.
When he plays the riff slow it sounds like a super bad ass groove metal riff
can't wait to hear the new dethalbum, Brendon!
Cannibal Corpse did this a lot back in the day.
yea!! in hammer smashed face!!!
Love the shot glasses on top of the monitors.
Next Week's loos awesome!!!
0:24 he's like whatever the fuck I just did was awesome
Really cool sounding for being such a simple little riff.
Unfortunately, no one died at the end of this episode :(
IDK why but i kinda like it when the riffs are played slowers. Still LOOOVE it :D learning it NOW!

These Shred-ucation videos are great! I can't believe you got him to sit down and do this, hahaha. Brutal \m/
he's doing this so he can get a positive feedback to make more money for the show. the more people that watch these videos the better his ratings

That's doable! ;D
Wow, I did not realize how stupid my comment sounded until you said that. Thank you.
I wish that he posted a link with the riff in tab format that would be badass to practice!
It's easy to figure it out by ear man. Don't be lazy.
best part of that episode

ok i got this down.. "Now lets do this at the normal speed " D;
Good stuff. It has an ominous sound to it.
Sidenote:
Everyone is falling for PeePeeVagi's trolling. Well played my friend.
well if your holding out for a hero then look no further... Brendon Small can be your hero. :D
Brendon has the fastest pinky finger I’ve ever seen.
Every time I think I've got it, I play the video again and realize I'm doing it about 100bpm too slow. How dare he make it look so easy!!
A great shape to start out with is a D chord and try sweeping that.
Anything is possible in cartoons, and they still needed two lead guitarists to play as good as him. :P
i do but i just dont know how to hold the pic or where down on the string would be good to pluck at
murdering outside the box. great episode...
Thanx 4 my Shrebuksun!!!
Because Marshall's are glorious.
Remember when TH-cam used to have video responses?
Been doing this. Didn't know it had a name.
Sounds like PH and slight bend but is it on the second or third? Because gut says 2 but I second guess a lot
Just because its in a tuning that you probably do not use it doesn't mean its out of tune.
I just don't understand why he went from Krank to Marshall. Anyone know why?
but whens do wes gets da ladies on each arms? dos theys comes with the guitars?
the low E is basically the only one i have trouble w/ all over. but then about the 1st-3rd frets on all the strings are hard for me..
The E is closest to your face. Now you'll never forget.
Yo, Brendon, can we get a "The Cyborg Slayers" lesson? :D
Wooow more!!!
brendan please be my music teacher.
c standard
Tabs would be grand
when he started playing slow i got my guitar and paused to see which frets. i started to play it with him and thought yay i got it. then he said one more time up to speed. oh shit
WILL SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THE SONG NAME IS IM GOING TO HAVE A STROKE
It's the Deththeme
It is pretty good, yeah. I find it's Thunderhorse that gives me that feeling though.
Steven Crocker I don’t think that’s the deththeme
yeah but notice how his tone is so refined and not that sweet crunchy metal goodness that only the Krankenstein can provide...enough to make captain crunch jealous
OMG ADULT SWIM ACTUALLY RENDERED A VIDEO IN 720P!
Am I getting the idea right down down on c the the flutter is all on the a string? Is that right?
how the hell do you get that harmonic or pinch harmonic up there??? :O i can never get those ones at the top!!
This is what makes me want to play guitar but i know i am the sort of person who finds it hard to devote my time to something like this :(
play go into the water, tune your guitar to the first chord, and rock on.
So if he (or she) wantd 2 b n a band wat else is there otha than DRUMS??
Though Dethklok songs are in C not drop C
It's called pinch harmonic, look it up!
T_T my E/C string broke while Fluttering..
how i do in 6/8?
Well I almost got the fluttering down, a bit tricky at first (for me anyways) but almost!! :D
drop c?
I betcha he drop tuned it yup Drop C baby!
C Standard
@@marcusw174 somebody with ears. I saw someone else think this was the deththeme made me want to cry
Actually that's a natural harmonic. You slap the string, you don't pinch it.
The first part is, the second part is on the E
So simple, yet... SO FUCKING HARD!!!
lols. I was surprised at the level of trollness going on in the comments on these Shred-ucation videos, but then it occurred to me that this is adult swim's channel, so what can you expect?
So... much... SWAG
I love the show !! It’s so Fucking funny
is he using a fullborne metal here?
why does he look older when hes not talking
Rabble! Rabble rabble rabble!
what dethklok songs is this used in?
I'm a little new to the metal way of playing. So you need to tune your guitar down right? I never done that before, is there anyone who can tell me how to tune my guitar for this?
he should do rejoin
i think he's trying to say to use this style and at the same time make up ur own riff
best top comments ever
fucken genius
Luv him. So talented, cute and funny. Hey Brendon let's make babies. Home Movies forever!
sorry they j**'d you out of a season 4 finale, we are all angry on your behalf
idk why but I get the impression that Brendon hates doing this shred-udacztion bideo's..
I know he is. But, I'm a reverse troll. I'll keep at him until he's fucking crying. xD
who needs tune when your that good.?
MONDAYS at 2:15am.
This riff sounds better on DROP C..
home movies!
Because if there's one thing Gibson's famous for it's forcing their artist to endorse the shit out of all of their friends.
anyone know what amp and setting he uses?
I wish
Live he uses a Kerry King Marshall and he's done videos for the Carvin Legacy amp
thanks you so much
+Ali Munoz I think he uses Axe Fx, but at one point in time he used to use Krank amps.
You can concentrate on something better with your eyes closed. That's what I'm trying to say.
fuck i love fluttering on the lower end of the note spectrum, ez nice :) do it in low A or some, tasty
No feeling? Why does he have his eyes closed?
Exactly. For feeling. Why do you close your eyes when you're enjoying something or, for a weird example, when kissing someone you love? =/
that sounds like every death metal riff haha.
and doesn't afraid of anything
O WHAT A DOUCH
