Since we know that a student's socioeconomic status plays a role in determining their success in school, it's surprisingly the film doesn't discuss the role of student socioeconomic background in FInland. Based on the film, the residents of Finland appear to have a fairly comfortable standard of living while in the U.S., we know there are widening gaps between the rich and poor, a major factor not just in education but with our country as a whole. It's not just a matter of having equal *access to quality education, as the film suggests. Student focus, engagement, and trust in the system can only exist if they have a comfortable standard of living, free of the stress of poverty or other social ills *outside the school.
This makes me want to cry. I did poorly in USA public school and I was allowed to slip through the cracks. I was bullied everyday and the teachers and principle either ignored it or laughed. I did not do well until I went to college.

The basics of the Finland elementary education seems similar to the Waldorf education where kids start later in grade school and have the same teacher for a few years, lots of outdoor play, no homework, arts, music, love of learning.
Seasonal affective disorder (also known as winter depression) is theorized to play some part. For 3-4 months, the sun only comes up for six hours or so. The resulting darkness easily inflicts depression.
Maybe you should see the crime stats and realize that Finland is one of the most safest place on Earth. Finland even voted to best place to be a mother and raise kids. We also have one of the highest standard of living and quality of life. Example in Sweden, there are 3 times higher crime rate than in Finland, even that they only have less than 2 times more people.
What is funny is that even though our school systems from elementary school to high school are by many scales better than anywhere in the world, we can't go to U.S universities like Harvard or stanford or cambrigde
Finland: Let's teach kids a second language in primary school, because studies have proven that younger children learn languages faster and more accurately. US: Let's just throw language in there in secondary school because fuck statistics. --A very disappointed American. :(
Well we have heard these praise words about our education since 1990. And every year our schools gets better. Now we even have many universities in TOP500 list even that those universities are free for all. This document show lot's of classrooms full of new Apple iMac's and flat screen tv's. I'm sure we won't abandon our system like you did like you mentioned.
actually you can choose between english and german. Both finnish and swedish is learned because we have 2 official languages. At 8th grade (when you're 14) you can choose (you don't have to) an additional language of usually english, german and french. Some schools teach spanish and other south european languages aswell. hope this helped
I think it's not about hate, it's more like a competition between us. I love Sweden as a country and the people there aren't much different. And they perfectly feel the same as we do to them.
The Official languages are Finnish and Swedish. We also study English (usually we start studying it at the age of 9) and there is a possibility learn other languages, such as Russian, Spanish, German, French etc. But everyone studies Finnish, Swedish and English.

Haha fair point there. ;-) Though I always saw apple as a hardware "marketing" glitz-and-glamour game first and foremost (though currently losing its grip to the Chinese) that deceptively devoured Nokia's once innovative shine.
Certain occurrences during WWII I put in the positive side. The Winter War especially. If you mean co-operation with Nazi Germany 41-44 to be a negative thing it is nonsense. US co-operated with Stalinists 41-45, Nazis co-operated with Stalinists 39-41 - there was not much choice for Finland.

Finland’s scl sys is great but impossible to do in the US, heck it would be impos to replicate in states like CA, TX, NY, & FL -- just too big. Finn is about the sz of MA and MA’s scl sys are generally superior to Finn’s. I think it's the attitude some of people here have for alcohol. Some people I know think that getting drunk is cool. It might be that because being drunk is not seen as embarrassing thing it's easier to get hooked. This is not everyone though. Finland is not perfect, things are not black and white but it's sometimes really offending when finnish people themselves advertise the getting drunk part.
You seem to have missed a couple of very relevant points from that period of Finnish history. The first being the Russia initiated the Winter War by invading Finland, with the aim of taking back the Grand Duchy of Finland, lost in the 1917 revolution. The Moscow Peace Treaty of 1940 forced Finland ceded 11% of its pre-war territory and 30% of its economic assets to the Soviet Union. The alliance with Germany after had much to do with the blockade during that war that prevented aid getting thru.
"I'm also wondering how we can know that the Finnish educational system is so good if there are practically no tests." According to the Pisa-tests they mean. But there is nothing that shows it is the school which makes the good Pisa-test results. It may also be e.g. the low number of immigrants.
Hmm there is education, and then there is the real world. And in the real world, Apple killed Nokia so I don't know if I'll get too hung up over the educational rankings stats... but that's just me. :)
a) Didn't know that and still don't care about Sweden. b) Well PISA tests shows that we can know that Finnish education is great. UN also ranked Finland as number 1 in Technological achievement. It mean that our people are quite smart. Did you know that there is more Mensa members in Finland than any other nation if you look at the percentage of total population. c) That's because nobody want to learn Swedish here. Sweden is not a important language like English, German, Spanish, French.
LOL! Countries like South Korea, Japan, Russia, Belgium and many other commit more suicides than the Finns. And alcoholism is a problem to alcoholics, not majority of Finnish citizens. We still have one of the lowest crime rates, highest quality of life and standard of living. Finland also voted to best place to be a mother and raise a kid. Newsweek made an article that Finland is the best place to live. If suicides and alcoholism would be a huge problem, Finland would never voted so high!
Yes, Finland's alcohol consumption has dropped drasticly down in 10 years. Watch the video "Country alcohol consumption comparison." In Europe The highest alcohol consumption countries are: The 1st Moldova, the 2 nd Lithuania, the 3 rd Chechia and the 4th Germany. Finland is likely in the middle even under. Forinstance Russia, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, France, Ireland, UK, Estonia, Latvia, Hungary, Cypros, Poland, Luxemburg, Belarus etc. are ahead of Finland. Also suicide rate have gone down. We do not live in the 90's anymore. 62 highest suicide countries and Finland is not even mentioned..The highest suicide countries are: The 1st Lithuania, the 2 nd Russia and the 3 rd South Korea.

LOL! So who is twisting statistics here? All those stats I referred were made by people living in other countries, not the Finns! And as a patriotic Finn, I don't see any bad for being proud of my country. We have a saying here: "If you don't like being here, get the fuck out!" Every people can stay in their own country and nobody is forcing them to come here. I would never live anywhere else. I can walk in a midnight everywhere without fearing being robbed or something.
What is your point? a) Don't know about the problems in Sweden and don't even care about Sweden. b) So you are referring that our school system is full of problems? c) We don't want to be a part of that multicultural thing named as Scandinavia. What is even Scandinavian language? And how is that "Scandinavian language" have anything to do with anything?
I think it was ok to invade Eastern Carelia but I admit the Russian civil population was not handled well. Neither were the prison of wars. Ofcourse if Germany had won the war Finland would have liked to be part of the Neue Europa. But Finland was not fighting for Neue Europa but for freedom, independence - and the freedom of carelians. I suppose US and UK were not fighting for stalinism 41-45 even if they co-operated with Russian stalinist government, They were fighting against Nazis.
Use to be? Greece use to be the center of the World. Now look at it. It is this moment what matters the most. And at the moment we have the best education system. History is history! And you are wrong when you said it is just a Nordic system. Then why nobody is not making these kind of praise documents about Swedish or Norwegian schools if we have the same system than theirs and what you abandoned?
A misleading statistic at 11:38 Sure, there are 16% or something that don't speak Finnish as their first language, but Helsinki is one of the few cities with significant population of Swedish-speaking Finns. Usually "Second-language Finnish" statistic measures the amount of immigrants, here that's simply not true.
How can we rank higher when we are number 1 in many statistic regarding standard of living and highest quality of life? And if we are extinct why Finland population has risen every year since our independence? In year 2000 Finland had a population of 5.1 million people. Now we have 5.4 million. And it's not because of immigration. It's just a simple fact that every year more people are born than dying. And because you have never been here, don't talk like you would know anything about Finland.
Tell your ideas of copying to those who praise our school system in other countries Don't come here to share your jealousy. Maybe Denmark should copy us? And about the Scandinavia thing. We don't mind at all that we are not part of that.
maybe you have or maybe you are ignoring that this is what you're talking about is a homogeneous group they're have a shared DNA with very little diversity I'm not surprised they're incredibly intelligent. diversity requires many techniques for teaching which here in the United States we are just really not equipped to do
So what you are saying is diversity is the problem. Growing up in diverse communities is what stops many socioeconomic issues. Our problem here in America is our Government which continues to spend money on things like war rather education. Our education system needs a huge overhaul. You have private schools getting the most funding whereas most public schools get cuts.
www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2011/12/what-americans-keep-ignoring-about-finlands-school-success/250564/ www.nytimes.com/2004/12/07/us/us-students-fare-badly-in-international-survey-of-math-skills.html read these articles. they explain that neither one of these is the reason
You're actually trying to say that the reason that the Finnish school system is better is because we play board games? Piss off, will you. We perform better, because our teachers are taught to provide the students with tools to handle any problem they're having in schools. The students are told to think for themselves. I study to become a teacher, and I can tell you that you have no idea about how to encourage excellency among students. Besides, there's no such thing as an impossible task.
Lets drop out every singel language and go study some chinese, eh? But in all honesty, Swedish is useless here. Its an old thing which got preserved when Finland was part of the Swedish empire. We are an independent country. Independent people. And we have an language which we are proud of. If we could only learn English, then people would thrive better here when going to school. Currently, Swedish only hurts our grades and thus our future as well. o_o

Sure, there are 16% or something that don't speak Finnish as their first language, but Helsinki is one of the few cities with significant population of Swedish-speaking Finns.
Yeah...Finnish kids learn a
Tell your ideas of copying to those who praise our school system in other countries Don't come here to share your jealousy.
You have private schools getting the most funding whereas most public schools get cuts.

read these articles. they explain that neither one of these is the reason
Besides, there's no such thing as an impossible task.
no true. it is impossible for a human to turn into a black hole without any sort of technology.
Currently, Swedish only hurts our grades and thus our future as well. o_o
Swedish is unnecessary.
not in sweden. or europe.
Finland’s scl sys is great but impossible to do in the US, heck it would be impos to replicate in states like CA, TX, NY, & FL -- just too big. Finn is about the sz of MA and MA’s scl sys are generally superior to Finn’s. One thing all of the best of the best scls worldwide have in common is the use of strategy board games, they instill necessary foundational learning techniques for success be it Manchala in Africa, Chess in India, Go in China and Armis in the USA
